Mission To provide a Christian liberal arts education that fosters the development of great minds and wide interests while nurturing each child’s relationship to God and the world He created.

Vision For all Charlotte Mason Community School students grow in a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom, for their good and the good of their communities.

Exam by Narration Examination is by written or oral narration – children tell what they know and CMCS does not “teach to the test”.

The Arts The arts, which are proven to increase academic perfomance, are a nonnegotiable part of the curriculum.

Nature Study Outdoor education and gardening are integral elements of the curriculum.

“Living Books” CMCS uses “living books” – books written by an author who knows and loves a subject. Textbooks are used for math and science, but they are heavily supplemented with “living books” and hands-on experiences.

In a recent parent survey, 100% of parents said that their children were receiving a high-quality education at CMCS CMCS educators view each child as a person with unique gifts and abilities from God. These gifts are cultivated through a broad and challenging curriculum. The overall value of a CMCS education cannot be measured in the test scores, although they are impressive. The real value is in children loving to learn; in children growing in relationship to God, themselves, other people, and the world in which they live; and in children and parents together awakening to knowledge, beauty and truth.

My children have never been so excited about school and learning as they are now. Before this, when my wife or I would ask, “What did you learn in school today?” the answer would be “I don’t know” or “nothing.” Now we don’t even have to ask; they come in and tell us about what the teacher read to them, how they built a tepee, what they did in art class, who they are studying in picture study and what they found in nature study. Amazing, I tell you, amazing! -Garland Best, CMCS Parent

With schools closing at an alarming rate, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate funding for supplies and staff, children become the victims. As a result of these conditions, children fall behind and eventually disengage from what is going on in their classrooms. It is no secret that the drop-out rates are high and the graduation rates are very low in Detroit.

CMCS is committed to changing the futures of Detroit’s children by: Treating children with respect Providing a rich and challenging curriculum Helping children develop good habits Committing to a small class size Advocating parental involvement Promoting arts in the curriculum Scheduling daily time outdoors

Since 2002 CMCS has helped students grow in their love of learning, become self-motivated, and take an active role in their education. The impact a CM education has had on CMCS students is also evident in 100% of its graduates doing well in high school and being on track for college or already attending college.

CMCS is laying a foundation for growth with the goal of serving more children in Detroit by: • Moving to a larger school building, through our partnership with Citadel of Faith, a church committed to improving education in Detroit • Actively recruiting children through the community and local churches • Providing competitive salaries for our teachers • Seeking wisdom and guidance through prayer • Recruiting community partners who will contribute to our mission

Join us! Please join with us as we provide high-quality education to the children of Detroit. Our actual cost per student is $7,700. Tuition is on a sliding scale from $3,700 - $7,700. Your support will help CMCS continue to offer this rich and challenging education, one that fosters in children a love of learning to last a lifetime. Thank you for considering a significant monthly investment in CMCS. The security of faithful support will allow us to focus our efforts on the educational components of our school.

Help build a school! As we move to our new school building in the Woodbridge/Midtown area, there are many renovations that need to happen to bring the building up to code and create an inviting place for our students. A one time gift could help Charlotte Mason students for years to come enjoy a stable and comfortable learning environment.

Sponsor a child’s education! CMCS is committed to providing an affordable education to every child who seeks it. In addition to tuition discounts, over 70% of our students need some added financial assistance. Several receive aid from local scholarship funds, but these funds are limited and many families that need assistance don’t receive it. We are looking for persons who share our belief that every child, regardless of financial circumstances, deserves a rich and broad education. Your scholarship gift could change a child’s future for the better.

Parents Charlotte Mason Community School is the result of parents and educators working together to provide a quality education for our children. While it is a requirement for enrollment, parental participation offers untold dividends to children and adults alike. Children enjoy having their parents in the classroom and internalize the importance of education when their parents are actively involved. Parents grow through interacting with other parents with whom they can share ideas, resources, and positive parenting skills. Parental involvement also helps to build a strong educational community and provides opportunities for positive lifelong relationships for parents and children. “I have three grandchildren attending Charlotte Mason Community School who are very happy. I have watched the oldest mature and grow in many ways. I started volunteering as a fulfillment of the family obligation, but as I worked with the staff and children, I came to understand that the Charlotte Mason philosophy deserves all the support I can give. What started as the fulfillment of an obligation has evolved into a truly enjoyable educational and fulfilling endeavor. -Mary Jenkins
