phone 903.520.0753 email alex.langford@outlook.com bio Hello! I’ve felt a strong sense to create spaces in the built environment since early in high school. It was my sophomore year at Texas A&M that I discovered a passion for healthcare architecture. From that moment, I have been blessed with opportunities to gain the skills and experience necessary. Now, as a master’s degree candidate at one of the top architecture + health programs in the world, I am excited to enter the field in a time full of promise and potential.

Maggie’s Centre aug 2018 - nov 2018 date patient and family support project type greenville, south Carolina location Cancer is one of the most difficult and painful project description experiences a human and their loved ones can go through. Maggie’s is an orginization that seeks to stand beside cancer patients, survivors and their families throughout the process. Whether that support be counseling, group therapy, or simply a place to relax, the Maggie’s centre can provide the necessary care. These facilities do not treat the disease, but rather treat the challenges that the individual is going through. The built environment provides the space necessary for practical, emotional and social support to help encourage healing and comfort.

The Maggie’s Centre in Greenville is located on a steeply sloped, heavily wooded site. These conditions allow the perfect environment to take full advantage of healing power of nature. The program is neatly orginized on an open floor plane, allowing for easy wayfinding. Having this open plan allows for 360 degree views of the surrounding trees. Furthermore, the building is lifted off the ground to create a feeling of awe and wonder, as well as optimize the views across the site. program

Grove Point Mental Health Hospital date jan 2019 - may 2019 project type inpatient mental health hospital location greenville, south carolina project description There is a growing need for behavioral health facilities that provide adequate care and safety while respecting the patient. This challenge is made more difficult due to the stigma that is often held against mental health patients. However, this project seeks to create a comfortable and appealing environment and a care model to provide comfort and healing to patients and their families. Views to nature, access to daylight and natural materials and natural design elements give patients a setting to feel comfortable.

Hospital in the Garden date sept 2019 - oct 2019 project type healthy urban community location charleston, south carolina project description The Charleston Medical District faces many challenges in terms of resiliency, movement and being a healthy community. A proposal to turn the medical district into a massive garden seeks to address all these challenges. Coastal flooding is prevented by creating a berm that borders the Ashley River adjacent to the district. Within the hospital campus, the hardscape surfaces are replaced with vegetation to help control flooding from tides and storm conditions. Movement and access to the district is solved by elevating transportation in a series of bridges and walkways through the new garden space. Small scale vehicles quickly transport people across the campus. A healthy community is encouraged through the accessible green space and vibrant mixed use functions that take place within the campus. partners taylor crafton, liyang zhang individual role master plan, berm/waterfront park, landscape design, collaborative design

Emergency Response Vehicle jan 2018 - feb 2018 date emergency care / disaster response project type The emergency response vehicle, or ERV/A, project description is set to be ready at a moments notice when distaster strikes. The goal of this project is to have a vehicle ready to go before outside help can arrive. The concept is very research driven. A number of disaster scenarios often occur at public events with publicity. Some sort of coverage, whether it be radio or television, is often prevelant when disaster strikes a large event. A mass shooting at a concert, a bombing at the finish line of a marathon, or a stadium collapse are all disasters that feature mass casualties and broadcast trucks stationed directly on site. Because these vehicles are immediately available, they have the opportunity to save lives. This project shows the steps required to prepare these vehicles to transport, treat and save.

UBRICA Cancer Hospital date jan 2017 - may 2017 project type cancer hospital location nakuru, kenya project description Designing a hospital in a sophomore studio is no easy task. This studio featured partners from senior level, sophomore level, and a graduate landscape architecture student. The hospital is located within the UBRICA ONE medical city. Before beginning the project, the team had to determine the type of hospital; what was the biggest area of need for healthcare in Kenya. Upon the discovery of several crucial statistics relating to cancer, the decision was made. Being in a low-income country presented several needs, including a sustainable and efficient design, a cutting edge radiology center, and the ability to teach and develop future generations of healthcare professionals. more information can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=12L5sbU1UmQ

The form of the building comes from a simple concept that’s rooted in both function and experience. A long, linear footprint allows natural ventilation and daylighting opportunities. The curve not only creates an inviting feeling when one approaches the main entrance, but allows each patient room to be focused on a view toward nature. A series of roof gardens are created on each level and provide a welcoming sight to visitors, as well as provide peace and relaxation for hospital patients.

radiology department sketches
The radiology department must be located underground for several reasons, including structure and dangerous chemicals. In order to provide the space with light, a courtyard is cut into the space. A corridor runs along the edge of the courtyard and comforts patients as they go in for treatment.

From the early phases of the project, the design concept was clear. From a strict set of restrictions, the building was set back from the highline. This inspired a stepped which allowed each level to provide a unique outdoor space. These roof gardens are designed specifically for each function of the level that has access. Perhaps the most powerful move of the project can be seen in the two axes through the building. Both are driven by circulation. The most prevelant of these runs almost north to south, following the angle of the highline. This axis cuts from one entrance to the other, and houses the vertical transportation of the building. The axis is continued upward by a series of atriums that create a visual connection between levels. The other axis runs perpendicular to tenth avenue, and serves as a connection between the street and the highline. At one moment, the two axes overlap, allowing users to view activities occuring throughout the building.

concept sketches Castiglion Fiorentino is a city rich in culture. It is a city that has historically promoted multigenerational interactions among its citizens. The design of the Community Cultural Center will continue this tradition and provide a place for public and social functions, one that is accessible to both the young and old. The active place and the dynamic aesthetic of the built form and the surrounding landscape will spark curiosity and creativity. The local community and visitors can thus re-establish a dynamic public environment with views to the hills and the valley below. The design references the typologies of the surrounding, aged architecture and incorporates this aesthetic into a modern iconic building.
