Locating Where to Plant City Trees

2014 - 2015 planting events

Hundreds of trees are planted in Austin’s parks each year thanks to citizen volunteers, City operations staff, and local non-profits.

Tree Planting Prioritization

o

The City of Austin’s Tree Planting Prioritization serves as a decision support tool for identifying tree planting areas by U.S. Census tract. The tool uses GIS and various datasets to locate and prioritize which areas should theoretically receive tree plantings. Prioritization is based on research and tracts are prioritized based on public health and safety, air quality, environmental justice, water quality, critical places, forest replenishment, forest preservation and development impacts, and urban heat island.

The planting process is enhanced by GIS. In the planting prioritization, tracts are scored based on planting factors like population density, available planting space, and presence of existing tree canopy. Parks, and other public spaces, are then chosen for planting based on their priority score and demand. Next, a site visit is conducted and a planting plan is created for each park to identify where trees will be planted in the ground. Once trees are planted, their locations and attributes are inventoried in GIS where maintenance crews may schedule tree care for the next three years. The inventoried trees will feedback into the planting prioritization layer with an update for next year’s planting season.

Austin Ecoregions Edwards Plateau | West of the Balcones Escarpment lies the Edwards Plateau. The plateau is an uplifted geological region and the largest of Austin’s local ecoregions. As one moves east in this region, the terrain becomes rugged with eroded limestone and granite rock forming what is known as the Texas Hill Country. The characteristic eroded canyons of this ecoregion are tied to the hydrologic cycle of Central Texas. For example, precipitation often results from air masses, passing over the Balcones Escarpment, FROOLGLQJ ZLWK ORFDO IURQWV 6XEVHTXHQWO\ VWRUPZDWHU UXQRII à RZV WKURXJK WKH &RORUDGR 5LYHU DQG LWV YDULRXV WULEXWDULHV DQG FUHHNV 0DMRU à RRGLQJ HYHQWV LQ WKLV UHJLRQ OHG WR WKH FUHDWLRQ DQG GDPPLQJ RI VHYHQ IUHVKZDWHU ODNHV DORQJ WKH &RORUDGR 5LYHU FDOOHG WKH +LJKODQG /DNHV :DWHU TXDOLW\ DQG à RRG FRQWURO KDYH KLVWRULFDOO\ LQà XHQFHG HQYLURQPHQWDO PDQDJHPHQW LQ WKLV DUHD DV WKH UHJLRQ LV KLJKO\ GLVVHFWHG by the Colorado River and its tributaries. The Edwards Aquifer—an artesian groundwater system—lies at the eastern edge of the plateau running along the Balcones Escarpment and provides crucial industrial, domestic, and recreational needs to Central Texas residents.

Blackland Prairie | The Blackland Prairie is a grassland ecoregion covering the eastern portion of Austin. Its boundaries form a thin strip spanning from the Red River in the north to San Antonio in the south. Its Cretaceous chalk, marl, and limestone formations created productive black clay soils suitable for farming. Initially the prairie consisted of tallgrasses however agricultural production converted much of the terrain into cropland and grazing pastures (Texas Parks & Wildlife, Blackland Prairie ecological UHJLRQ 7KH UHJLRQ LV LGHQWLÀHG DV WKH PRVW DOWHUHG HFRUHJLRQ LQ 7H[DV ZLWK RI WKH QDWLYH %ODFNODQG Prairie remaining today (Ramos & Gonzalez, 2011; Clymer Meadow Preserve website, 2013).
