HOLYYOKE STREET CONNECTS TO RESIDENTAIL HOUSING. PERPENDICULAR TO COLUMBUS AVE THE STREET ALSO CONNECTS TO PUBLIC PATH ON OPPOSITE END OF COLIUMBUS AVE. THE STREET CREATES A SENSE OF PRIVACY AND RESPECT.

CASE STUDY THE MODERN BUILDING MAKES A STRONG STATEMENT ABOUT THE DEVELOPING CULTURAL CENTER IN SANDVIKE, NORWAY. THE STRUCTURE SUCCESSFULLY MITIGATES NEIGHBORING BUILDING OF VARIOUS SIZES AND SERVES TO FURTHER UNITE ITS SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT


INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES INITIAL SKETCHES BEGIN TO DEFINE THE IDEA OF HAVING LIGHT AND COLOR BECOME A PRIMARY ELEMENT IN THE SPACES. LIGHT SYMBOLIZES ENERGY AND MOVEMENT IN SPACES AND LEADS VISITORS TO A BEACON SPACE ABOVE STREET LEVEL WHERE MAIN PERFORMANCE OCCURS

SUN ANALYSIS SUN ANALYSIS FOR PUBLIC SPACE AND FRONT FACADE FRONT BUILDINGS ALONG COLUMBUS AVE BLOCK MOST SUN LIGHT DURING WINTER DURING SUMMER THE BUILING WILL GAIN MOST SUN LIGHT IN PUBLIC SPACE AND FRONT FACADE, BETWEEN 9 AM AND 3 PM HOURS OF THE DAY


MATERIAL STUDY STAINED GLASS: INTERACTS WITH LIGHT, BRINGING COLOR INTO INTERIOR SPACES. THE COLORFUL GLAZING CREATES CONTRAST BETWEEN BRICK FACADE BRICK FACADE; BY INCORPORATING A BRICK FACADE THE BUILDING BLENDS-IN WITH ADJACENT BUILDINGS THE PATTERN AND THE COLOR CAN ALSO BECOME A CONTRASTING ELEMENT THAT MAKE THE BUILDING STAND APART FROM EXISTING NEIGHBORING BUILDINGS

CONCEPT STATEMENT CONCEPT STATEMENT COLOR/LIGHT/MUSIC THE CONCEPT IS TO BRING PEOPLE INTO A PUBLIC SPACE WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN INTERACT WITH STUDENTS AND FACULTY THROUGH MUSIC. IN ORDER TO BRING CURIOSITY AND ENHANCE THE MUSIC EXPERIENCE THE BUILDING’S GLAZING ACTS AS A TRANSLUCENT COLORFUL LAYER, CREATING A SENSE OF SYNESTHESIA; A CONDITION WHERE ONE CAN SEE MUSIC THROUGH COLORS. AS ONE CIRCULATES THROUGH OUT THE BUILDING EACH SPACE CREATES A HIERARCHY OF PRIVATE SPACES, BUT ARE STILL ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC/VISITOR.

THE PERFORMANCE SPACE BECOMES A FOCAL POINT OF THE BUILDING. THIS SPACE IS PROJECTED OUT TO EMPHASIZE ITS HIERARCHY WITHIN THE BUILDING. THIS SPACE BECOMES A FORMAL PERFORMANCE FOR THE STUDENTS AND VISITORS

THE MAIN ENTRANCE CREATES A LARGE OPEN SPACE FOR THE PUBLIC, WHILE STILL CREATING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY WITHIN THE BUILDING FOR THE STUDENTS. THE SUNKEN PUBLIC AREA BECOMES A PLACES WHERE THE WALKING PEDESTRIAN IS ABLE TO INTERACT WITH STUDENTS IN THE ADJACENT PRACTICE ROOM AS INTERMENTS ARE PLACED IN THE EXTERIOR AREAS FOR THE PUBLIC. THE CAFE INSIDE IS FULLY ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE SITTING AND ENJOYING LISTENING TO MUSIC.
