The Alan Rogers Awards The Alan Rogers Campsite Awards were launched in 2004 and have proved a great success. Our awards have a broad scope and before committing to our winners, we carefully consider more than 2,000 campsites featured in our guides, taking into account comments from our site assessors, our head office team and, of course, our readers. Our award winners come from the four corners of Europe, from Spain to Croatia, and this year we are making awards to campsites in ten different countries. Needless to say, it’s an extremely difficult task to choose our eventual winners, but we believe that we have identified a number of campsites with truly outstanding characteristics. In each case, we have selected an outright winner, along with two highly commended runners-up. Listed in this guide are full details of each of our award categories and our winners for 2015. The Alan Rogers Award Presentation The Vakantiebeurs in Utrecht is Europe’s largest holiday exhibition open to the public. It attracts over 170,000 visitors and is the ideal occasion to present our Alan Rogers Campsite Awards. Our award ceremony is well attended by campsite owners from the four corners of Europe, along with many other interested parties. Since their launch in 2004, the Alan Rogers Campsite Awards have grown in status and now occupy a unique place in camping/caravanning. Our ceremony provides an invaluable and convivial forum for us to acknowledge the best of the best.

This amazing site is very large, offering absolutely everything a camper could wish for. It is extremely professionally run and we were impressed with the whole organisation. It lies along a 1.2 km. long, broad sandy beach which shelves very gradually and offers a huge number of sporting activities. The site itself is regularly laid out with parallel access roads under a covering of trees. There are 2,200 pitches for touring units, all with 6/10/16A electricity and 1,969 also have water and drainage. Because of the size of the site, there is an internal road train and amenities are repeated across the site (cycling is permitted on specific roads). You do not need to leave this site during your stay – everything is here, including a sophisticated wellness centre. Overnight parking is provided outside the gate with electricity, toilets and showers for those arriving after 21.00. There are two aqua parks, one with fine sandy beaches and both have swimming pools, lagoon pools for children, a whirlpool and a 160 m. ‘Wild River’. Another water park is planned for 2016. A huge selection of sports and activities are offered, along with luxury amenities too numerous to list. Union Lido is, above all, an orderly and clean site. This is achieved by implementing reasonable regulations to ensure peaceful, comfortable camping under good management. A member of Leading Campings group. Facilities

Camping Tenuta Squaneto Frazione Squaneto, I-15018 Spigno Monferrato (Piedmont) T: 014 491 862. E: info@tenutasquaneto.it alanrogers.com/IT64045

After years of experience in the camping industry, Barbara and Pieter Witschge have built their dream – Tenuta Squaneto, natural camping with brilliant facilities. It is deep in the countryside with no villages, shops or restaurants in the immediate area. The 68 grassy, level touring pitches (100-120 sq.m) have wonderful views and 35 have water, waste water and TV connections. The site is in a small valley with trees all around, there is a river to walk along, fish or simply swim and play in. A lovely lake is central to the site and the nearby swimming pool is stunning with a large whirlpool and a children’s shallow play pool with wonderful frogs and turtles that spray water. Tenuta Squaneto is a tranquil site; background noise comes mainly from insects and birds. Barbara and Pieter aim to keep it this way. The experience here is about the beauty of the setting and how good it is to be in harmony with nature. The surrounding countryside is idyllic and it is hard to imagine anyone not embracing the experience at Tenuta Squaneto. Facilities

This site has 900 reasonably large, flat pitches of varying sizes, whose layout makes them feel quite private – some come with a ready erected hammock! There are 410 pitches for tourers (255 with 16A electricity) separated by low hedging. This site is a true oasis of peace in a part of the Netherlands usually bustling with activity. From this site it is possible to walk straight through the dunes to the North Sea. Although there is no pool, there is the sea. A separate area is provided for groups and older teenagers to maintain the quiet atmosphere. The site groups its pitches according to its visitors, for example, there are activity areas, a relaxation area and a family area. Eating facilities are good, with reasonably priced menus, and the supermarket is large and well stocked. A small pizzeria opens several times a week in low season. Alan Rogers Country Award 2015

Alan Rogers Country Award

This award contrasts with our former award and acknowledges sites which are attractively located in delightful, rural locations.

Park Grubhof Grubhof Nr. 39, A-5092 St Martin bei Lofer (Salzburg) T: 065 888 237. E: home@grubhof.com

alanrogers.com/AU0265 Park Grubhof is a beautifully laid out, level and spacious site set in the former riding and hunting park of the 14th-century Schloss Grubhof. The 200 touring pitches, all with 12-16A electricity, have been carefully divided into separate areas for different types of visitor – dog owners, young people, families and groups, and a quiet area. There are 167 very large pitches (at least 120 sq.m), all with electricity, water and drainage, many along the bank of the Saalach river. Although new, the central building has been built in traditional Tirolean style using, in part, materials hundreds of years old reclaimed from old farmhouses. The result is most attractive. On the ground floor you will find reception, a cosy café/bar, a restaurant and a small shop, and on the first floor, a deluxe sauna, beauty and wellness suite, two apartments and a relaxation room. Some areas are wooded with plenty of shade, others are more open and there are some very attractive log cabins. Many of the possible activities are based around the river, where you can enjoy canoeing and white-water rafting, fly fishing (with a permit) and swimming (when the river is low). The ski resort of Lofer Alm is only 2 km. away (free ski shuttle). A cross-county track is 300 m. away and snow cleared winter walks start directly from the site. Facilities

Les Peupliers is a friendly, family site on the banks of the Tarn river. Most of the 103 good sized touring pitches have shade, all have electricity (6/10A), water and a waste water point and are divided by hedges giving some privacy. It is possible to swim in the river and there is a landing place for canoes. The site has its own canoes and organises round trips of 10, 15 and 20 km. In a lovely, sunny situation on the site is a swimming pool with a paddling pool, sunbeds and a slide, all protected by a clipped hedge and with a super view of the surrounding hills and the Château du Peyrelade perched above the village. A treat for us at dusk was to watch beavers playing and swimming on the far river bank. We were told this happens nearly every day. The site is near the village of Rivière-sur-Tarn and the mouth of the Gorges du Tarn. Alan Rogers Family Site Award

Many sites claim to be child friendly but this award acknowledges the sites we feel to be the very best in this respect.

Las Dunas is an extremely large, impressive and well organised resort-style site with many on-site activities and an ongoing programme of improvements. It has direct access to a superb sandy beach that stretches along the site for nearly a kilometre with a windsurfing school and beach bar. There is also a much used, huge swimming pool, plus a large double pool for children. A new Aquapark opened in 2015. Las Dunas is very large, with 1,700 individual hedged pitches (1,500 for touring units) of around 100 sq.m. laid out on flat ground in long, regular parallel rows. All have electricity (6/10A) and 400 also have water and drainage. Shade is available in some parts of the site. Pitches are usually available, even in the main season. Much effort has gone into planting palms and new trees here and the results are very attractive. The large restaurant and bar have spacious terraces overlooking the swimming pools or you can enjoy a very pleasant, more secluded, cavern-style pub. A magnificent disco club is close by in a soundproofed building (although people returning from this during the night can be a problem for pitches in the central area of the site). With free, quality entertainment of all types in season and positive security arrangements, this is a great site for families with teenagers. A popular site for British rallies. Facilities

Alan Rogers Readers’ Award 2015

Alan Rogers Readers’ Award

We believe our Readers’ Award to be the most important. We simply invite our readers (by means of an on-line poll at www.alanrogers.com) to nominate the site they enjoyed most. The outright winner for 2015 is:

Camping le Coin Tranquille 6 chemin des Vignes, F-38490 Les Abrets (Isère) T: 04 76 32 13 48. E: contact@coin-tranquille.com alanrogers.com/FR38010

Le Coin Tranquille is well placed for visits to the Savoie regions and the Alps. It is an attractive, well maintained site of 192 grass pitches (178 for touring units), all with 10A electricity. They are separated by neat hedges of hydrangea, flowering shrubs and a range of trees to make a lovely environment doubly enhanced by the rural aspect and marvellous views across to the mountains. This is a popular, family run site with friendly staff, making it a wonderful base for exploring the area. Set in the Dauphiny countryside north of Grenoble, le Coin Tranquille is truly a quiet corner, especially outside school holiday times, although it is still popular with families in high season. The Chartreuse caves near Voiron are well worth a visit, as is the Monastery, and a mountain railway goes to the summit of the Chartreuse Massif. A comprehensive guide in English is given to guests on arrival detailing all the local scenic routes and places of interest. Facilities
