Behind The Scenes of The Benny Bonsu Show
I had the pleasure of being behind the scenes at the production of the Benny Bonsu Show. I arrived on the set at midday and production was in full swing! It was amazing seeing the lady herself Miss BB in Hair & Make-up and I took this opportunity to talk to her about the Benny Bonsu show and what makes the show different from other shows that are being broadcasted within the UK at the moment. Benny said “The show is about, real life issues, real people, topics and issues that are currently happening within society, politics and media. There is no acting involved with guests that appear on the show and it is all about straight up talking, debates and discussions. One
problem, 4 different people with 4 different views” and I believe this show is a true representation of Benny herself! Before shooting I met and spoke to the panellist’s ( Jade Webster, Sarah Cyrus, Vanessa V, Mishika Britton, Dj Longers, Simon Gross, Tom Jones, the presenters, the directors ( Henry Treku & Patrick Ziga) , the camera crew ( S.O.L Media Productions), make-up artist (Akosua Adjeiwaah) and the production management team. They then had a meeting to discuss the direction of the show and to make sure everyone had one understanding and the same vision for the days shoot .The topic that was discussed on the show this particular day was ‘The Tottenham Riots’ which lead some parts of England participating in rioting
and looting. The panellist’s and Benny discussed why they thought this had happened and it all got quite heated as the panellist’s are all from different working backgrounds and diverse cultures and all contribute and play their part in the community. And because of this everyone’s views and opinions were slightly different. The concept of the Benny Bonsu show is original, dynamic, fierce and diverse! And can be watched and enjoyed by a wide audience, Miss Benny Bonsu is a real character and brings this presence to her show and because she is aiming for her show to be shown on BBC3, the sky is the limit!

Afronews MOBOs Criticised Over Jessie J Sweep is blasphemy. BLASPHEMY.” The biggest outrage came from supporters of UK rapper, Wretch 32 who believed the Tracktor star, who was nominated for four categories at the Glasgow ceremony and didn’t win one, should’ve at least scooped Best Newcomer.
THE MOBO Awards was criticised last night (Oct 5) for presenting pop singer Jessie J with four awards out of the five she was nominated for. The Do It Like a Dude singer scooped Best Album, Best UK Act, Best Song and Best Newcomer at the annual awards put on to celebrate music of black origin. “I didn’t know Jessie J makes BLACK music,” said Twitter user, @KahmarlaJohnson While @OMFGmusiic wrote,”Um, how did Jessie J win best album at the MOBO’s? Fellow rapper, Chipmunk, tweeted: “Conspiracy” While Choice FM presenter, Kojo, wrote: “All Im saying is CRAIG DAVID all over again,” in reference to the infamous 2001 BRIT awards, where the singer was denied all SIX gongs he was nominated for. “So @Wretch32 didn’t win anything last night...And ppl (people) wonder why the MOBO’s aren’t taken seriously [sic],” added Sherify84. East London rapper Tinchy Stryder managed to walk away with the Best Video award for Spaceship - a collaboration with N Dubz star, Dappy - but even that didn’t escape harsh criticism on the night, with Twitter user, @
MelissaMono noting, “[He] had to share it with a white artist, how ironic.” Back in July, Voice reporter, Janice Brown asked whether the Mobos were “doing a disservice to black artists” by using white singers to promote the awards. She wrote: “I certainly don’t subscribe to the thinking that black people should always ‘help their own’, regardless of whether those seeking help deserve it or not. But if organisations like MOBO – and The Voice – that seek to promote black culture, choose to push white talents over black, can we really expect any more from the mainstream?” “The awards reflect what is happening in the UK music scene right now,” MOBO founder, Kanya King said after the awards. “It’s been a great event that has welcomed some exciting new award winners to the Mobo roll of honour including the global superstar Adele, the UK’s hot talent Tinchy Stryder and of course the fantastic Jessie J walking away with four awards,” Kanya added.

Miss Ghana UK to help project the Ghanaian persona Newly crowned Miss Ghana UK says she will be focusing on how British-born Ghanaian women can contribute to boosting the country’s image abroad. 18 year old student Mildred Akuba Mamikyi Afoh Edoukou was born in London to Nzema and Ashanti–Akyem parents and has lived in London ever since. She said she was encouraged to participate in the pageant by her friend who competed in last year’s event. She said after her initial reservations she managed to pass through the audition and made it to the grand finale. In an interview with Reindolf Ofosu on Hitz FM’s Skuup, Mildred spoke about her plans for her reign as Miss Ghana UK.
She noted that she will form a committee of young Ghanaian women born in the UK so they can discover what it means to be a British Ghanaian. This will help them know who they really are, what they stand for, where they come from and what they represent so we they can uphold their Ghanaian roots. Mildred says she loves creativity and adores black beauty. The Miss Ghana UK contest which started about half a decade ago is aimed at raising Ghana’s rich cultural background and heritage while placing great emphasis on Ghanaian attributes and lifestyles in the UK and abroad.

African Fashion Week London (AFWL) African Fashion Week London (AFWL) was marked to be the premier event to showcase ‘African and black inspired fashion from all over the world’ and I can truly say that this show really did exceed expectations. Being the biggest platform ever dedicated to African inspired fashion in Europe, over 50 designers from various parts of Africa such as Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Congo, Ghana and more showcased
to the over 2000 plus crowd over the two days. And having previously been held in New York and Johannesburg, it was only right that London should play part in bringing African and western infused styles to the fashion forefront –where it belongs! The event embodied London’s unique and diverse heritage with the extravagant fusion of African culture,
style and music to celebrate Western and African culture through fashion. Africa’s influence of exuberantly bold colours and designs inspired by traditional techniques are increasingly being seen in the high streets. And with new and emerging as well as established UK and non UK based fashion designers showcasing their collections, AFWL offered those in the fashion industry a free platform on

which to showcase their brands, act as an opportunity for fashion designers to network among each other and create a portal for new designers to enter into the market and integrate into the international fashion system. It was truly refreshing to see the sophisticated and yet wearable styles that didn’t shy away from intermingling the African flair with a western twist. Categories on show included accessories, bridals, jewellers, foot wears, milliners, lingerie, street wear as well as swimwear. All types of garments could be found on the runway; from bubble skirts teamed with shoulder padded tailored power jackets and metallic monochrome dresses, to 1950s inspired ball gowns in vibrant African print and street wear flavoured with an African inspired influence. The use of vibrant colours and prints from different African countries was

just a joy to see. And although each fashion house used professional models to show off their clothing, whether you are blessed with an voluptuous body or a slender physique, you were sure to find a garment in each fashion house to compliment your individual body shape. It was very inspiring to see how many of the designers mixed classic elements of African fashion, such as bold prints and statement accessories, to create strong modern looks.

AfroSports Defiant Ghana Black Stars V South American Giants Brazil Brazil, with the recalled Ronaldinho in their starting XI, edged out ten-man Ghana 1-0 in a friendly at Craven Cottage on Monday 05.09.11 The Samba stars were far from their best on English soil, but picked up the win courtesy of Leandro Damiao’s solitary strike. All of the attention prior to kick-off was focused on the returning Ronaldinho, with the former World Player of the Year making his first appearance for his country in 10 months. The 31-year-old has been in impressive form for Flamengo since returning to his homeland and was drafted back into the fold by coach Mano Menezes. Ronaldinho was unable to dictate the game, though, as two evenly-matched sides proceeded to cancel each other out. The only goal of the match arrived on the stroke of half-time, with a defence-splitting ball from Fernandinho allowing Leandro to find the bottom corner. By the time the deadlock was broken, Ghana had already been reduced to ten men.

DJ NEPTIZZLE The INTERVIEW Eva Newlove: Who is D.j Neptizzle???
Neptizzle: I’m a D.J and I specialise in playing the best in Afrobeats, I’m 23 years old from Hackney. I’m from Vietnam and I was born and raised in London.
Eva Newlove: At what age did you start djing?
Neptizzle: I started djing at the age of 16, I then got into production and that’s what I was really into at the time (music production)
Eva Newlove: Your one of the most talked about Dj’s on the Afrobeats scene right now! And I think that’s also because
you’re Vietnamese playing African music so it makes you unique. When did you start playing Afrobeats? And why Afrobeats?
Neptizzle: It all started a few years ago when one of my Ghanaian friend’s sister was having a graduation party and their D.j had let them down last minute, so my friend asked me if I could dj for them and I was like cool. He gave me a mixed CD of Afrobeats to play and I said to him “what’s this? I haven’t played this kind of music before” lol, and he was like “well that’s the kind of music the people are going to want to listen to” so I had to play it, and as I was listening I liked the sound of it. Dynasty said I was good and it was him who helped me within the Ghanaian community to get gigs and bookings. I got
Unleash the Afrobeat within DJ Neptizzle aka Michael Hung Nguyen was born in North London 30th May 1988 to Vietnamese parents & was raised in East London. He started his DJ life on the turntables with Grime records at 16, building up his musical and DJ knowledge. Neptizzle has always had love for music, starting originally with music production, studying music from GCSE level through to University. His love for African music began in 2007 when he was asked to play at his close friends sisters graduation party. Neptizzle was given a CD of Hiplife music prior to the party, & was told to learn the songs & to mix them at the party. At first the big language barrier took him back, but after listening and analyzing the songs he realized that this music wasn’t so bad, even though he could not understand the dialects within the music, he was taken away by the rhythm and the feeling within the songs. If there was any doubt about the music, it was quickly rebuffed when he dropped the songs at the party and the response was crazy! Being hypnotized by the African Rhythm, Neptizzle researched into music from West Africa, predominantly music from Ghana & Nigeria. Leading on from his friend’s graduation party, Neptizzle was booked to play in a club within a week. Slowly & steadily Neptizzle built up his name in the London club circuit as a reliable multi genre DJ, but he was definitely turning heads with his Afro beat sets.
scene, which enabled him to go from Portsmouth to Nottingham to display his magic on the decks on a much wider scale & is now recognized as one of the top DJs in the UK Afro beat scene. In 2010 Neptizzle started to become a familiar face supplying music at Ghanaian hall parties to the older generations. This has now allowed his demographic to start from as young as 13 going up all the way to 50+. As well as energetic club sets DJ Neptizzle also supplies his fans with free Afro beats mix CDs packed with clever mixes and the latest tunes keeping listeners up to date with new music. The success of his mix CDs have seen him hand out over 2000 CDs and over 10,000 Internet downloads of all his mix CDs accumulated. Neptizzle has performed at major Ghanaian and Nigerian events in the UK such as Ghana Independence, Ghana party in the park, Nigerian Independence as well as playing in London’s world famous club, Ministry Of Sound. Neptizzles hard work and party rocking mixing style has enabled him to travel abroad, to Wales, Netherlands & Ghana, Rocking crowds and leaving an everlasting impression on the locals. DJ Neptizzles main aim is to push the Afro beats genre into the mainstream and to break barriers by changing the way people think about contemporary African music & in the process become a highly respected DJ in the Afro beats genre.
In 2009 Neptizzle made significant strides in the English University
a job at Selfridges and started buying my own equipment which gave me more opportunities. The more I played the better I got and I was always familiarising myself with new music and practising
Eva Newlove: So what did your family think? It must have been weird for them, you playing Afrobeats in the house, lol.
Neptizzle: Yeah at first lol, my parents would be like shut the door and be quiet the music is noisy! But now my mum even asks me for CD’s and they are used to it, to be honest I think they are very proud of me and have seen all my achievements. And I’ve just finished university as well, I studied Music Technology.
Eva Newlove: So apart from djing what else are you
passionate about? Or should I say what other hobbies do you have?
Neptizzle: I’m a football fanatic and I support Tottenham Hotspurs. I watch football with a passion , I was born in Edmonton so when I was young I decided to support the nearest team to where I lived. Eva Newlove: So what are you doing now? And what’s the next step for D.j Neptizzle? Well I’ve been on BBC 1xtra as a guest D.j on D.j EDU’s show and hope that can become a regular thing, And the next step in my career is to help push Afrobeat music to the fore-front (mainstream) and be a part of the people that made Afrobeat music history!!!!!!!! And also get involved in other projects, who knows where all this could take me.
AfroEvents Metro Live: A lesson in hip hop history from Sway and The Fokn Boiz at XOYO Sway took the stage at XOYO after a stint working in the US with some of hip hop’s heavyweights. As if this wasn’t exciting enough for the crowd who had poured in to the Shoreditch venue for a glimpse of the man behind F Ur X and Pop A Bottle, he had a mystery guest in town.
Despite the genre-hopping set, Sway always found his way back to his hip hop roots, freestyling to beats by mega hip hop producer Dr Dre, as well as covering songs by rappers Warren G and Nate Dogg. The crowd lapped up the crossovers between the old and
the new, and vibes were kept high throughout. He wrapped up the night by performing his new drum and bass influenced single Still Speeding, the follow up to his hit, Up Your Speed. The night’s event was the first in a series of Metro Live events happening throughout the year. If this first show is anything to go by then this series is something not to be missed.

AfroEvents Ghana party in the park 2011 Akwabaa and Active Promo have established themselves to be a reliable and fun sponsored organisation. Apart from the English weather playing sunny intervals and rain, Afro pulp attended Ghana Party in the park. In the early morning not much was happening because different stalls were preparing to surprise and attract people’s attention. And indeed it was an immaculate event containing tribal Ghanaian food such as banku accompanied with its soup, gboflo, wachee, kinke and many more tasty mouth watering dishes. Although it was a Ghanaian event there were a diverse range of other nationalities that participated as well to make it a yearly event to remember. Ghana Party in the Park is a Ghanaian association that unites [Ghanaians] people from different communities under one roof to come together.

Music was the main key that drew the crowd to move to the rhythm they heard or attended. Ghanaian artists, alongside Nigerian artists won the crowd over with their fantastic Afro beats and dance moves. ‘Azonto’ by sarkodie had a massive impact upon people the old and young alike danced till they were worn out with joy and excitement. Afro pulp took a glance at the royal Ghanaian family where other mini shows were taking place. The traditional dance impressed the king. The talent show a competition was composed of mainly break dance and singing, aimed to a variety of age groups within the youth. It was held near to the entrance of the park. This was an opportunity which revealed unique gifts of youngsters which was cheered on by the gathering crowds who were eager to know who the winner would be. Denta the host teased the crowd and knew exactly how
to pull their legs by not announcing the winner straight away. To everyone’s astonishment a 9 year old boy won to Asomouah Gyan ft Castro’s song African Girls. He showed that his footsteps were unbeatable with a lovely smile giving the dance his all. Denta presented him with a £1000 cheque and his proud parents encouraged him with a warm hug. Parents were not disappointed, because there were activities for their children to enjoy. Especially with ice cream vans all over the Park. And toilets were reachable too so everything was under control. All the DJ’s played their roles and they too intertwined with the crowd marking their presence. This was an ideal event which allowed people to socialise and network. By evening, all the energy and enthusiasm had disappeared and people had gained their money’s worth. By Estelle Bressard Oyourou

Diva’s Natasha, Stephanie & Deniece are an inspiringly charged dynamic of energy and talent and they have stepped right into stardom modestly after shooting to fame through Ghana’s Vodaphone Icons television competition. They are the ladies we know as RNM. This month Afropulp had the privilege of spending some time with them. The ladies graced London with their presence and performed in style at the Miss Ghana UK beauty pageant, their London debut. Asked what they thought of the London crowds response to their performance, the ladies poured out gratitude’s at how well they had been accepted and thanked the audiences for their positive reception. The ladies took working and socialising into their stride on their short stay. Whilst in London, the ladies went to a studio in a secret location, their improvisation and spontaneity connected with UK artists to deliver some catchy harmonies that should be blessing our ears soon. In between their tight schedule of interviews; studio time; filming their music video; Networking; combined with their Miss Ghana UK performance; they managed to squeeze in visits to both London Westfields. The girls have a bond that’s so open and natural you’d believe they’d been friends for longer, but the girls were following completely different paths in life prior to the competition, and have only been together for few months.
