01 EVENT CENTER

The people of Ikorodu in Lagos state of Nigeria would hold social events on the streets. Yes, they would arrange rental seats and tables on the roads and hold social events like Weddings, Baby Naming, Funeral, Thanksgiving and so on. DJs, caterers of food and drinks and other services were given their spots on the streets as well. There was a special permit obtainable from the town council for hosts of events wishing to “block the roads”.

No doubt, road-blocks for social events hindered free flow of human and vehicular traffic in the town. It also caused noise pollution within the neighborhood which is undesirable.

In order to address the undesirable attitude of road-blocks for social events, the town council allocated a parcel of land for an event center. The project, upon completion, was expected to move social events off the streets. The town council also would stop giving out permits to block the roads for social events.

The town council in 2014 called for design submissions from interested companies. Brymon Limited, a company I used to work with made this presentation as a submission for the project.

FLOOR PLAN

The Main building has a 900-capacity hall with a podium, a back-stage area, changing rooms, and a food server. There are two main doors into the building that could be used to control human traffic in and out of the building. Restrooms are available on either sides of the main entry.

PROJECT SITE

The allocated site for the project was about 3270 sq mtrs. It has the main entrance to the east, car lots to the south, and an outdoor paved area to the west. The site also has a gate house, a waste disposal, and a generator plinth. The main building sits on about 1170 sq mtrs, which is 35.80% of the allocated site.

APPROACH VIEW

The façade of the main building carries a highleveled window that adds to natural lighting of the interior of the building. It also has a porch with a canopy to define the main entrance of the building. The core shape of the building is pentagon. But at the roof level, there are 7 gables on either side of the roof.

3D VIEW

The main building is predominantly white in colour. There is a metal structure to complement the structural appearance of the building. The gable add-ons to the roof of the building is more visible in the 3D view.

CONCLUSION

The town council was satisfied with this design for the project. With this project, people of Ikorodu have been encouraged to bring their social activities from the streets. In fact, other individuals and groups have come up with more event centers to serve as venues for people to hold their social activities. The problem of hinderance to free flow of traffic has been solved with this project.

02 OFFICES DEVELOPMENT

An individual client, Kunle Oyinloye, had requested for a design for an office development sometime in 2015. Brymon Limited came up with this design for the client. The design spans 3 floors with 4 lettable office spaces; 1 lettable office space on the 1st floor, 2 lettable office spaces on the 2nd floor, and the last lettable office space on the pent level.

The design had an initial closure. But a year down the line, the client requested a modification of the façade exterior walls from glass (curtain) walls to block walls. A 3D view of the modification is at the end of this reel. Due to the modification into exterior block walls, concrete columns were added for additional structural support to the front part of the building.

During the design, we thought of having distinctive features on the building. We came up with a unique roof type and an irregular cuboids fusion at angles 90 degrees. With these features, we were able to derive a highly aesthetic design for the office development.

SITE PLAN

The site for this project is about 650 meters square. The site is located along Beach Road in Lagos Nigeria. There are about 30 car parking spaces on site. The building is sitting at about 260 meters square on site.

1ST FLOOR PLAN

At this level, there is one out of the four lettable spaces in the building. This lettable space takes about 92 meters square. It has conveniences and a lobby to connect to other parts of the building.

Also at this level, there are car parking spaces underneath the higher floor. There is a stairwell that vertically connects the 1st floor with higher floor levels. There are ducts to connect services through the floor levels.

2nd FLOOR PLAN

At this level, there are two of the four lettable spaces in the building. The front lettable space takes about 111 meters square while the back lettable space takes about 110 meters square. Each office space has its own toilette convenience and a lobby to connect to other parts of the building.

Also at this level, there is a stairwell and ducts that vertically connect through all the floor levels.

3rd FLOOR PLAN

At this level, there is the last lettable space in the building. This lettable space takes about 134 meters square. It has its own toilette convenience and a lobby to connect to other parts of the building.

Also at this level, there is a stairwell and ducts that vertically connect through all the floor levels.

ROOF PLAN

The roof has two levels. The frontal level is covering the 2nd floor while the rear level is covering the 3rd floor level. So, the roof is in two parts. The two roof parts are designed to have rainwater fall towards the left side of the building.

ELEVATIONS

The front and sides elevations show three floors to the back of the building and two floors at the front side of the building as well as their corresponding roofings. The elevations also show the metal structural support at the front of the building.

INITIAL 3D VIEWS

The 3D views showing the aesthetic features of the design. The spectacular roof curly at the lower end has added to the beauty of the design. The interwoven cuboid has also added to the beauty of the design.

The car parking spaces on the 1st floor could be seen as well as how vehicles could be arranged around the metal slanted columns underneath the upper floor. The curtain walls at the façade could be seen as well.

The only remaining metal structural support is now painted red to make it conspicuous. The newly introduced columns are covered with tiles for aesthetic purpose. Shrubs are now at the entrance for beautification.

SUBSEQUENT 3D VIEWS

Within a year of completing the initial 3D views, the client asked for a moderation to the materials on the façade. He wanted more block walls instead of glass walls. On this new 3D views, concrete columns were introduced where there were metal structural supports. For this reason, car parking spots under the building were eliminated. Car parking spots are now at the front and the side of the building.

The people of Epe have asked for a community hall to hold their events. They asked for a multipurpose hall to hold such events like conventions, expositions, banquet, lectures, conference, shows and exhibitions.

Brymon Limited came up with this design in 2015 in response to their requests. The multi-purpose hall is supported with some other briefs like a lounge, a kitchen/server, a restaurant, a store for the hall, management office, reception and information.
