Introduction.
Sustainable practice in industry calls for an end to the notion that commerce

and the environment are diametrically opposed to each other. Building off of ground breaking work that reframes world commerce as the only force large enough to enact change at a global level, this course prepares students to apply design thinking to the greatest of all problems: building a sustainable ecologic, economic and social culture in industry.

Concept Summary.
It is an ethos of Savannah to be proud of our heritage, and the city’s historic materials deserve a place in our community for years to come, not a spot in another landfill. This RE:PURPOSE SAVANNAH Seal certifies the authenticity of products and establishments furnished with reclaimed materials. Waste is a product of short-sightedness. The RE:PURPOSE SAVANNAH campaign aims to educate the public on the value and process of deconstruction, support and expand existing landfill diversion initiatives, generate demand for reclaimed materials in the marketplace, and build on existing examples of innovative material reclamation and reuse. And because the most sustainable building is the one that remains standing, RE:PURPOSE SAVANNAH never targets a building that can otherwise be saved or adaptively reused. Re-purpose Savannah, and take home a piece of history.

Design Criteria. Brief: If you could design a product that captures the essence of Savannah what would that be?
Phase 1 - Capture: Capture something unique of Savannah that inspires you (by a photo, video, drawing, recording, object) Phase 2 (Wednesday, 20) - Conceptualize: Conceptualize two designs for a product that embodies your perception based on what you capture in Phase 1. If you could gift someone a product that represents that essence of Savannah how would that look? Consider the historical value of natural beauty and the spirit of the community. Phase 3 (Saturday, Feb 23)- Idea Selection: Idea presentation: participants will have feedback from the judges and final selection of 3 finalists to go to Phase 4. Phase 4 - (March 2nd) Celebration of the Finalists: Phase 4 event at the Lumberyard, the 3 finalists have the opportunity to make their prototype in a live session with material donated by Emergent Structures. (Celebration of the finalist) Phase 5- Earth Day Market: The final stage, the winner gets to build their product with professional mentors to sell at the Earth Day Market.

Rules. Judging criteria: Compelling Narrative: How compelling and powerful is the presentation? How effective is the storytelling? Does each major and team member have a strong voice and impact? Wow Factor: How novel and unique is the idea? Does a similar product already exist in the world today? How will you go above and beyond in your presentation (posters, handouts, physical prototypes, etc)? Deliverables: -
Basic sketches for each idea
-
Hand made the prototype(s) with eco-friendly materials (optional, not required)
-
Final product made by reclaimed materials
-
Name and description of the product
Process: Concept sketches, ideations, 3d modeling Considered the final product will be built with reclaimed materials (wood, metals, any found object that can be reused) wood will be donated by Emergent Structures for the final product Size: 10 inches x 10 inches max 1 - 3 people per team max In partnership with Emergent Structures, Maven Makers, Boulle Winners: Get opportunity to showcase and make products with professional mentors and potentially sell products at Earth Day market

How would you describe Savannah in one word?
Concept Summary. “Saturday in the yard was an event organized by Emergent Structures in which we as a class had the opportunity to collaborate. The primary goal of the event was to attract people to the Lumberyard* and also to communicate the value of reclaimed materials. During the event, there were few of Savannah makers who work with reclaimed materials selling their products in the atmosphere of live music on the background. Our participation consisted of a stand, in which we showcase the different ideas that we have been developing through the quarter, we wanted to present the approaches to the attendees to get feedback and impressions on the projects.

SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN
Concept Procedure.
We engage with the participants by creating a quick activity in which we asked them to describe Savannah in one word and hang it on our tent, by doing so we were looking to build a conversation about what Savannah means to the community and the potential that reclaimed materials have to communicate that value. Overall, we were able to connect with several people and the attendance was meager which we think is normal for the first event of this type, and this also gave us points to reflect when developing the frameworks to future events and improve certain aspects mostly regarding the communication of the fact. Regarding our project, we did get valuable feedback to improve some of our ideas, especially the navigation map since participants were able to interact with the tool during the activity.

Concept Summary.
During our primary research, actors in Savannah mentioned the possibility of utilizing the ‘bike-walk campaign.’ We recognized that encouraging reclaimed materials for creative usage as well as the biking would be of benefit. To begin, we thought of a campaign that would interact with local businesses that collaborated with repurposed furniture and map their locations in Savannah. This idea was presented to the actors we invited to our second co-creative session, and lead us to understand the restraints we might encounter. Upon group meetings and reflection our idea was further focused and reframed. Although we support and encourage the ‘bike-walk campaign’, our team needed to focus on sparking the sustainability conversation in Savannah and step away from the logistics of biking in town.

In this map, we would also identify the optimal route to get to these places in Savannah and endorse participants for supporting these local businesses and biking and or walking in Savannah. This would be called #LoopSAV, and the experience could be tagged at any of the identified spots.

After our second co-creation session with involved stakeholders, our team has a common opinion about the “bike” campaign. It might exclude other possible participants who are willing to be involved. Even though the idea of #LoopSav has many potentials in the long term to cultivate green and sustainable culture on local level by keeping a historic value of repurposed materials, the execution will be difficult within our limited time frame.

We found out that even though the City of Savannah put many efforts in making solid bike trails with plans, but the infrastructure is not fully ready. Also, the reasoning behind “biking” is not compensated enough to cover a relatively small amount of potential users who are bikers living in Savannah or tourists who are willing to enjoy Savannah during biking experience. Due to the nature of the campaign itself, it is hard to forecast about its success from the beginning, and we want to embrace more opportunities as much as we can by opening up to pedestrians: ordinary people. Additionally, accessibility and security can be one of the risk factors that this campaign has regarding the activity of “biking.” Based on stakeholders’ suggestions and internal discussion we decided to leave the idea about providing a bike trail but maintain the idea of a campaign to catch people’s attention about reclaimed wood and play as an overarching umbrella to raise awareness of people and being a triggering touch point to our other resources.

Our Experience.
In our case, we viewed this map twice in our process. The first time was to understand the possibilities and consequences our design solutions might have. The second time was to measure and analyze the potential impact the design solutions we came up with could have. We were happy to see that our solutions are following the right pathway on the map. As indicated on the map, there are multiple areas in which we currently fall under, however, if all the components in our solution work together we would meet the ideal criteria that it takes for responsible

social impact to happen.
Moving forward, the focus of our design solution is to expand the range of experiences into the cross-sector as well as cultural engagement. The idea is that if we are able to be fall under that criteria, the solutions will stimulate positive behavior change in our social ecosystem. S A V A N N A H

Closing Statement.
It is with gratitude and excitement that we share this book with you. What we’ve been able to accomplish in these 10 weeks is just the beginning, and we hope that our work will inspire you to continue shaping Savannah’s resilient future for the entire community. Ignite excitement with more events like those we’ve documented, engage with the community through our navigation map, and champion reclaimed materials with the certification process we’ve helped envision. All of these concepts are part of the larger RE:PURPOSE SAVANNAH campaign, and each of them is a vehicle for education and preserving Savannah’s history for generations to come. Savannah, with all its quirks and character, is a city worth taking care of and preserving for a long and prosperous future. That future is in your hands now. Stay gold, Ponyboy.
