Balance constituye la tercera exposición individual del artista colombiano Bernardo Ortiz (Cali, 1972) en Alarcón Criado. Se trata de un site-specific que el artista plantea en el espacio de la galería, donde se reúnen trabajos instalativos, intervenciones murales, así como una serie de piezas inéditas ejecutadas sobre diversos soportes y técnicas. La muestra antecede la presentación en ARCO Madrid 2020, de un proyecto individual en la sección Projects, contiguo al stand de Alarcón Criado. Desde hace años Bernardo Ortiz insiste, tercamente, que hace "dibujos acerca de pintar". Dibujos que giran sobre el acto de pintar. A pesar de su advertencia la frontera entre el acto de dibujar y el acto de pintar se hace cada vez más tenue y porosa. La exposición es una puesta en escena de gestos aislados. Por ejemplo: imprimar con cera y aceite papel de seda para hacerlo al mismo tiempo transparente e impermeable a la tinta; manchar innecesaria y artificiosamente una tela encontrada; "recuperar" dibujos viejos con marcas de óleo; retratar, de memoria, encuentros lejandos con combinaciones de colores que el artista llama "excéntricas"; en fin gestos que tienen una condición contradictoria, por que aunque evidentemente, deliberados, los gestos parecen responder a impulsos básicos, en donde marcar, rayar, pintar son formas de recuperar algo que está irremediablemente perdido.
Biografía: Vive y trabaja en Bogotá, Colombia. Estudió Arte en la Universidad de Los Andes en Bogotá y luego obtuvo una Maestría en Filosofía en la Universidad del Valle en Cali. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en exposiciones internacionales en MAMBA (Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires) 2016, Bienal de Sydney (Sydney, Australia, 2016) Bienal de las Américas (Denver, EE. Balance is the third exhibition hosted by the artist Bernardo Ortiz at Alarcon Criado. It is about the way the artist poses in the specific gallery space, and a place where installation works and mural interventions will meet. It is a series of unpublished pieces executed with various techniques and supports. The exhibition precedes the presentation that will take place at ARCO Madrid 2020. Ortiz will have his own individual project next to the stand of the gallery Alarcon Criado. For years Bernardo Ortiz has insisted, stubbornly, that he makes “drawings about painting”; that is, drawings that revolve around the act of painting. Despite the warning, the border between the act of drawing and the act of painting is becoming increasingly thin and permeable. The exhibition is a staging of isolated (painterly) gestures. For example, priming, with wax and oil, tissue paper to make it both translucent and impervious to ink; staining found pieces of fabric; depicting, from memory, distant colour combinations that the artist deems as “excentric”; et caetera, et caetera. These gestures have a contradictory condition: they are deliberate even calculated, but at the same time they seem to repond to basic impulses. Impulses, like marking, scratching or smearing, that are ways to recover something that is irretrievably lost. Bernardo Ortiz lives and works in Bogotá, Colombia. He studied Art at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá and then achieved a Master’s Degree in Philosophy at Universidad del Valle in Cali. His works was presented in an international exhibition at MAMBA (Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires) 2016, Biennale of Sydney (Sydney, Australia, 2016), Biennial of the Americas (Denver, USA, 2015), 43º Salón Internacional de Artistas (Medellín, Colombia), XXX Bienal de São Paulo (Brazil, 2012), XI Bienal de Lyon (Francia,2011) Ephemeroptarae (Austria, 2013), Game Piece (Noruega, 2013) and MDE 07 (Colombia, 2007). Ortiz was co-curator of the 7th Mercosur Biennial (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and of the 41 Salón Nacional de Artistas (Cali, Colombia).
