His 48th summer on top of the world Ned Rozell This June, George Divoky will refurbish a cabin that sits on a lonely gravel island north of Alaska. He was not planning a remodel this year. Sometime during the winter, a polar bear tore through a plywood wall of the cabin Divoky moved 20 years ago to Cooper Island. Cooper Island is a crescent of gravel in the Beaufort Sea, 25 miles east of Utqiaġvik, the northernmost settlement in the United States. With a lot of help from his friends, last week Divoky patched up the trashed shelter. He is now ready for his 48th consecutive summer on Cooper Island studying a bird that has become a symbol of a warming planet. That bird is the black guillemot, a sleek ebony sea bird that spends its entire life in the Arctic. Fifty years ago, Divoky was doing a pretrans-Alaska pipeline assessment of birds in the Beaufort Sea. The guillemots caught his eye. Three years after that, in 1975, Divoky set up nest boxes for the birds on Cooper Island, using wood left behind from a U.S. military exercise. With his nest boxes — which later evolved to polar-bear proof plastic camera cases — Divoky has charted the downward trajectory of a bird that depends on sea ice. In the 1980s, 225 pairs of black guillemots nested on Cooper Island. Last year, Divoky counted 25 pairs. “I had no idea for the first 15 years that this
birds’ August feeding time. Parent birds now feed their chicks sculpin and other fish that are less abundant and less energy-rich than the cod. Divoky has watched nesting success plummet due to the shrinking sea ice, just as he watched them succeed as the ice freed up Cooper Island in the early 1970s. He has seen other changes. During his decades of spending each June through August on the cold, foggy island, Divoky did not see many polar bears until one summer day in 2002. “I was weighing chicks Photo by Craig George. and I looked up and saw this George Divoky and his friend Matt Thomas pose in front of Divoky’s cabin on bear walking by the tent that Cooper Island after repairing polar-bear damage in April, 2022. had the gun in it,” he said. was a climate-change study,” Divoky said reHe encountered 16 polar bears that summer, cently from his home in Seattle. one of which wrecked several mountaineering Black guillemots prefer to feed their nest- tents he used as a camp. In recent years, the ice edge has been hun- He has enhanced his polar-bear protection with dreds of miles from Cooper Island during the electric fences and motion detectors.
“I’ve always felt safe there,” Divoky said. Last week, Divoky and his friends Craig George, Geoff Carrol, John Citta and Matt Thomas — with logistical support from staffers at the North Slope Borough Department of Wildlife Management — snowmachined with supplies and tools from Utqiaġvik to Cooper Island, a bumpy 25-mile ride. They cleaned the mess the polar bear had left (“There was almost nothing functional that could be salvaged,”) and went to work patching the wall with new plywood. “We were out there five hours and suddenly — boom — it was all fixed,” Divoky said. Now back in Seattle, the energetic 76-yearold biologist is ordering a new cookstove and other necessities to stock his plywood refuge on Cooper Island. Though he sees irony in the destruction of a cabin that bears had left unmolested for 20 years (“As the colony is collapsing, now the infrastructure collapses,”) he is compelled to return to Cooper Island and the project he started the summer after Richard Nixon resigned as U.S. president. “If I wasn’t in love with the Arctic and that colony, I wouldn’t have gone back,” he said. Maximizing mileage Julie Cascio, UAF Cooperative Extension Service The cost of fuel has gone up making it more expensive to drive. There are, however, ways to improve your gas efficiency and lower your driving costs states AAA Automotive. Reducing the amount of driving we do— by carpooling, using public transportation, and routing your daily tasks carefully, and combining trips—has the greatest effect on how much gas each person uses. Ways to improve fuel economy when we do drive involve driving more efficiently and making sure our cars are properly maintained. Here are tips provided by U.S. Department of Energy. “FuelEconomy.gov”. Accessed March 30, 2022. Slow Down. Speeding, braking, and rapid acceleration waste gas. Depending on the type of vehicle, poor driving habits can negatively affect fuel economy between 15% and 30% on the highway. Based on the current Alaska average of $4.74 per gallon (for regular gasoline), driving sensibly, and not like a race car driver, can lead to an equivalent gas savings of between 71 cents and $1.42 per gallon.

GreatLander Mat-Su
Gas mileage efficiency tends to decrease above 50 miles per hour. According to fueleconomy.gov, for every five miles per hour that exceed 50 mph, drivers pay an equivalent of about 30 cents more for each gallon of gas. While each vehicle has its own optimal speed for fuel efficiency, speeding can result in 7% to 14% reduced fuel economy. Driving at slower speeds can save 30 to 61 cents per gallon. Leave Extras at Home. Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An additional 100 pounds in your car can reduce gas mileage by up to 1%. The reduction is relative to the vehicle’s weight: Smaller vehicles are more affected by increased weight than larger ones.
May 2022
Use Cruise Control (When Appropriate). According to Edmunds.com, using cruise control under appropriate conditions (avoiding use during especially hilly terrain) can improve fuel economy by up to 14%. That’s a savings of about 66 cents per gallon.1 Turn off the Car. Idling gets zero miles per gallon and collectively consumes several billion gallons of fuel per year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The California Energy Commission (CEC) advises that vehicles should be turned off if the expected wait will be longer than 10 seconds, since an idling vehicle can burn as much as one gallon of gas each hour. Check Tire Pressure and Alignment. A little bit of vehicle maintenance can go a long way in improving gas mileage. Underinflated tires cost you money. Properly inflate your tires, using the guidelines in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. These recommendations also appear on a sticker inside the driver’s side door jamb. Misaligned tires drag instead of roll freely. Improper alignment can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 10%. In addition, the tires can wear out more quickly. Tires that
are out of balance (symptom: vibration in the steering wheel) can cause uneven tire wear, which can result in lower gas mileage. Tires should be balanced and rotated according to the vehicle’s owner’s manual to improve tire performance and fuel economy Replace Spark Plugs. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence indicates that bad spark plugs can decrease fuel economy by up to 30%. If a car’s gas mileage suddenly drops, there’s a good chance it’s because of misfiring spark plugs. Fill Your Tank Early in the Morning—or Late at Night. Fuel is dispensed by volume. Filling your tank when it is coolest outside—avoid the heat of the day—the fuel will be more dense. As a result, you will get more gas for the same amount of money. The Bottom Line. Reducing the amount of driving we do, whether it’s by carpooling or foregoing an unnecessary trip, is perhaps the most effective way to decrease the amount of gas that each person uses and make fill-ups at the gas station last longer. Proactive steps can be taken to improve fuel efficiency by paying attention to and changing gas-guzzling driving habits, and following a vehicle’s maintenance schedule.

Recycling repeats itself By Randi Perlman The month of April brings many meaningful changes to planet Earth. In our neck of the woods, spring begins unfurling, snow and ice start melting, birds fly in from faraway lands to magically migrate through, and dreams of fishing and gardening creep closer to reality. April also coincides with a significant event that we touched on briefly in Episode 2, so let’s take a closer look at a very timely turning point in recycling history. Springtime brings us Earth Day! Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in the year 1970. Back then, there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act; there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment. That’s when a United States junior senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues and bring them forward onto the national agenda. Rallies took place across the country and by the end of that year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Twenty years later, in 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe!

Every year, more than a billion people come together and celebrate Earth Day to help protect our planet from the damages caused by pollution, greenhouse gases, deforestation, and climate change. Spurred on by the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962, which raised public awareness and concern about the inextricable links between pollution and public health, Earth Day 1970 would come to provide a voice to this emerging global consciousness, literally putting environmental concerns on the front page. Carson’s book represented a watershed moment, and through the efforts and voices of Senator Nelson and the colleague he recruited to help him, conservation-minded Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey, Earth Day has gained groundswells of momentum and reached over 190 countries since its inception. Earth Day 1970 also achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, in addition to the creation of the EPA, the first Earth Day led to the passage of several first-of-their-kind environmental laws, including the National

Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act. Two years later Congress passed the Clean Water Act; a year after that, the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was soon followed by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws have protected millions of men, women and children from disease and death and have prevented the extinction of hundreds of species. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It also prompted President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest honor given to civilians in the United States — for his role as Earth Day founder. Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by over a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes. The social and cultural environments we saw in 1970 are rising up once again — a fresh and frustrated generation of young people are refusing to settle for platitudes, instead taking to the streets by the millions to demand a new way forward, a
cleaner, healthier world for themselves and their children. Digital and social media are bringing these conversations, protests, strikes and mobilizations to a global audience, uniting a concerned citizenry as never before and catalyzing generations to join together to take on the greatest challenge that humankind has faced. The theme of Earth Day 2022 is INVEST IN OUR PLANET. Are you willing to make that investment? A wide range of events are being planned around the world to celebrate this globally meaningful and ever-growing movement. Check social media to find out how you can get involved and be part of the solution. By engaging in simple activities like picking up litter, planting native trees and perennials, turning off electronics and lights when not in use, and recycling, we’re making our world a happier, healthier place to live! Taken directly from the website of EarthDay.org: We need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). It’s going to take all of us. All in. Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet. Let’s be Partners…OK ?!?

Julie Cascio, MatSu Cooperative Extension Service, UAF The thought of herbs makes my mouth water. Adding dried thyme to salmon being baked, oregano to spinach or peas, tarragon to beets or broccoli are just examples of seasoning ideas. There are options to season food with fresh herbs or dried herbs. Having dried herbs in the kitchen gives us the flavoring we want to use throughout the year. While the flavor generally lasts two to three years, it does need to be stored in an airtight container in a dry, dark location below 75°F. The flavor dissipates over time, though. When the wind is howling outside, take time in the house to go through your herbs and spices. Open the container and smell it. If there is no smell, toss it. It is time to replace that herb. Fresh herbs can add a special touch to your meals. The little plastic boxes of fresh herbs from the store, add cost to the meal. And last a short time. Herbs are easy to grow and a real cost saver. Some herbs that grow well in the MatSu include oregano, marjoram, sage, pineapple sage, anise hyssop, French tarragon, lemon

balm, parsley, mints, catnip, chives, and dill. Basil needs a warm area to flourish, such as a warm porch or greenhouse. Herbs can be grown in the ground or, as many of us do in Alaska, in containers, window boxes or hanging baskets. Recycled containers are easy to use for herbs. For example, an old recycled shoe organizer (one of the kind that hangs on the closet door) had an herb planted in each of the little pouches. It was hung up on the wall, providing a great vertical way to grow plants. Most herbs need a sunny, warm location

to grow. The oils, which account for the herbs’ flavor, are produced in the greatest quantity when plants receive six to eight hours of full sunlight each day. If you don’t have a good, sunny location, many herbs will tolerate light shade. However, their growth and quality will not be as good. Nearly all herbs can be grown from seed. If possible, sow seeds in shallow boxes. A light, well-drained soil is best for starting the seedlings. When planting, mix two parts sterilized potting soil and one part coarse sand or perlite, or purchase a seed-starting mix. There should be a hole in the bottom of each pot to ensure good drainage. Be careful not to cover the seeds too deeply with soil. Generally, the finer the seed, the shallower it should be sown. As a general rule, sow seeds at a depth of twice their diameter. Remember, you can always refer to the back of the seed packet for recommended planting depth. Transplant seedlings into the ground in early June, or into a larger pot for the summer.
Consider the water needs of each herb. Plants that grow rapidly need more water, as do plants in clay pots or hanging baskets. Misting and grouping the plants on a tray of moistened pebbles will help keep them in a humid condition. Water well, so a little water runs through the pot, but does not accumulate. Allow moderate drying, but not wilting, between waterings. Fresh leaves may be picked as soon as the plant has enough foliage to maintain growth. To ensure good oil content, pick leaves or seeds after dew has disappeared, but before the sun becomes too hot. If you are drying the herb, harvest leaves before the flower buds open. Pick the seed heads as the color changes from green to brown or gray. Wash dirty leaves and seed heads in cool water; drain thoroughly before drying. Herbs are a great way to add flavor to your meals. Growing your own herbs is a great way to save money. Questions on how to grow herbs and to preserve them in CES publication “An Alaska Herb Garden.” call Extension at 907-745-3677 or go to CESpubs.uaf.edu.
