Ask Cora Hey Cora, what are some of the new trends for 2020 in-home designs and features? I love all things new construction, let us know what we can expect for the coming year. Signed Trendy Trenderson Dear Trendy, well what a great question, I know that some of you are getting tired of the white kitchens and white subway tile, but it’s still hanging in there! So are the simpler, less cluttered looks. Clean lines and built-ins are still popular. One of the most interesting trends is the smart homes. These have been around for a while and I know you have seen them in the home improvement stores, but “smart” features, like Nest and Iris, are wonderful innovations that help save energy on heating costs by programming furnaces to lower temperatures when you are not at home, and to turn the heat back up when you are on your way home. Talk about keeping the home fires burning! These systems can be accessed with your smartphone too, it can also be connected to a security system and cameras. My favorite thing about these easy to install systems is that here in Alaska, a lot of us slip away during the winter months, this system will notify you via your smartphone to let you know if your heat is out for some reason. This has happened to many friends, they leave for Mexico for 2 weeks and come back to a frozen house because the batteries in the thermostat died! What a mess! These systems prevent that. Wouldn’t it be great if you got a break on your insurance because you had one of these “fancy-dancy sparkling-thing-y doodles” in place? More technology. The Alexa systems and the like. These have been around for several years now, and they don’t need to be hardwired into your home, they work on Blue Tooth technology and they don’t just play music. You can set them up to turn lights off and on, to disable and enable an electrical outlet, and even make phone calls. “Alexa, call mom”, “Alexa, turn off the lights in the living room”, “Alexa, turn on the coffee pot!” “Alexa, order me a pizza!” Honestly, I am looking forward to “Alexa, fold my laundry!” But that might be a while! Replace your outlets with new ones that have USB ports. This too has been around a while, and wow, it’s nice – no more cubes! (Hint* Costco has these) and easy peezy to install! More things you will see in new construction: outdoor stuff! Outdoor fireplaces are becoming popular. Now, I know that these are lower 48 trends, but covered decks with

An outdoor fireplace on a covered deck would be just the ticket for 6 to 7 months of Alaskan outdoor living. And as you know, we all have a bunch of beetle kill right now, imagine sitting outside in front of a lovely fire in MARCH – OUTSIDE, around your fireplace! Okay, now this one is really strange, ready? This has to do with the actual construction of the home, self-healing concrete! It repairs holes and cracks through self-activating bacteria that can produce limestone to fill in spaces that affect its structural integrity! Microencapsulated agents like polyurethane or epoxy may also soon be added to a variety of building materials to mimic the same sort of self-repair process. Other materials to watch out for are transparent aluminum, carbon nanotubes, and more durable solar tiles. Whew, I know, too much information right! The designers are saying fancy highly patterned backsplashes in the kitchen, floral patterns for draperies etc, feminine colors (now what is this? Do they mean pink? Because what exactly is a feminine color?) Lots of metals in tables and lighting fixtures. And black! Yup black. One black wall, black cabinets on white walls, white countertops. Seems stark to me, but I guess if you throw a splash of “feminine color” in there, that’s all you need! LOL Things you won’t see in new construction for 2020: Phone jacks, people aren’t putting in phone lines anymore. Everyone uses a cell phone. Cable jacks, you can get them, but it probably won’t be standard anymore. Large Kitchens, you will see efficient kitchens with large walk-in pantries. Because so many of us shop at Costco or other stores that sell in bulk, we need large open shelving to store all of that must-have stuff ” from Costco. Jetted or Soaking Tubs, yeah they look cool, but so many of us don’t take the time to use them. Plus they take up a lot of valuable space in the master bathroom. Trends are showing that large custom showers are the way to go. And don’t even get me started on what you can do there! Rain showers, power showers, steamers, there are 50 ways to get clean in the shower! Barn doors, they still are fun to look cool, but you aren’t going to see them much in new construction in 2020. So you are all caught up now. You are ready to take on the construction and design world for 2020. Of course, this will all change – before you know it – just don’t get set on anything. January 2020
