Officials with LB Chapman could not be reached for comment over the weekend. It's not known whether the two men were employees of the company. Chris Krepski, a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board, said initial information indicates the plane crashed on takeoff. Krepski said investigators need to find out why the plane was taking off, the nature of the its flight, what type of maintenance had been done on the aircraft, and any communication with aircraft services nearby. RCMP Cpl. Wahnese Antonioni said family members have been notified.

Protesters rally at dam site of Prince George. Fortin is concerned the dam would be used to power B.C.’s liquefied natural gas industry, something she feels is unnecessary. “(With the) Site C dam, they’re taking everything away from us,” she said. “We’re not getting the oil, we’re not getting the power, all we’re getting is the mess and the ruin.” She expressed her support for Biggar. “She’s a strong girl and she fights for what’s right,” said Fortin. “You can knock her down and she gets back up. Another protester, Chris Paull, is against the dam partially because of the damage it would cause to what he felt was a very beautiful valley. “I used to hang glide up there in Bear Flat. I spent hours up there, floating around with the eagles and hawks, and it grows on you,” he said. “It’s just a shame to flood that valley.” Some travelled to be there, including longtime Green Party supporter Cathy Fortin out
Around 50 Site C opponents staged the first of what may be many rallies at the dam site Saturday morning. Outside the site entrance off the Old Fort Road, people lit a fire, drummed, and paraded signs as trucks came and went from the busy work site. The protest, which began around 10 a.m., was peaceful and did not disrupt work on the site. Protesters say they're gearing up for future rallies aimed at stopping the dam. Local Green Party candidate Liz Biggar organized the protest and promised to fight Site C if she is elected. “(Site C is) an insane idea,” Biggar said. “We’re going to be flooding prime Carousel Design & Decor agricultural land to subsidize oil and Ph: 250-785-5754 gas, in an nutshell.” Biggar added that farmland across the country will be impacted by climate change, increasing the importance of Northeast B.C. as a future agricultural hub. Treaty 8 Tribal Association member Verena Hoffman felt that it “means something” to have people come out and speak against the Site C dam. “No one should think that anyone’s closed on the book on this journey that we’re doing to preserve and protect our Peace River valley,” she said. “It will go on for decades until our valley is protected...there will be a way for us to find a stop through this whether it’s in the courts or whether it’s in the people coming together.” reporter@ahnfsj.ca

The B.C. government and LNG Canada announced two complementary funding programs on Oct. 15 that will help employees in the construction sector upgrade their skills. The LNG Canada Trades Training Fund was created as a resource for employers, who are now able to apply for funding for their current and future employees. The new fund will provide $1 million to employers in B.C. in support of industry and apprenticeship training in the construction sector. “The (fund) will enable British Columbians to benefit from careers in all industries, and particularly the emerging LNG industry,” said Andy Calitz, LNG Canada CEO, in a written statement. “By collaborating with government and the B.C. Construction Association, we can support construction employers and their apprentices with access to funding for training and skills development to fully realize job opportunities.” The construction association will administer the funds. Additionally, companies in the construction sector can apply for the Canada-B.C. Job Grant (CJG), which will provide $500,000 for employee training that occurs before April 1, 2016.
This grant is a three-way partnership between employers, and the federal and provincial governments. “The LNG industry represents tremendous opportunities for British Columbians, with the potential to generate billions of dollars in investment and create thousands of jobs in B.C. This is an exciting, transformative time and we want to prepare all British Columbians — and B.C. businesses — to seize the LNG opportunities coming our way,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training Shirley Bond, in a press release. Under this grant, government pays for twothirds of training costs for an employee up to $10,000, while the employer is responsible for the remaining one-third of training costs. These funding models are complementary in that eligible employers will be able to receive funding from the LNG Canada – Trades Training Fund to offset their share of the CJG training cost. Details on the LNG Canada Trades Training Fund are available on the BCCA website at www.bccassn.com and on the LNG Canada website, www.lngcanada.ca. For information on CJG eligibility and application procedures, visit http://www.workbc.ca/canadabcjobgrant.

Players assigned for World U17s B yron Hackett

After the 66 players were decided upon to represent Canada at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge last Friday, Hockey Canada officials spent the weekend mulling over potential roster combinations for the event that gets underway Nov. 1 in both Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. On Monday, the Canada Black, Red and White rosters were announced. The 66 players were selected by Ryan Jankowski, Hockey Canada's director of player personnel, together with Joël Bouchard, a member of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence management group, and regional scouts Carl Bouchard (Quebec), Barclay Branch (Ontario), Wade Klippenstein (West), Kevin Mitchell (Atlantic) and Darrell Woodley (Ontario). “We have three very competitive teams with plenty of talent, thanks to Ryan Jankowski, Joël Bouchard and all our regional

perience for these players, who are putting on the Team Canada jersey for the first time in international competition. We know it will be special for them, and for the fans
who will be out to cheer them on.” Canada White has arguably the top prospect in the tournament, 6’2”, 185-pound forward Gabe Vilardi from Kingston, Ontario who plays for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. Vilardi was selected second overall in the 2015 OHL bantam draft. He currently has eight points in 10 games this season with the Spitfires. On Canada Black, Stelio Mattheos, a 6’0” 190-pound center from Winnipeg, Man. is one of the top five rated prospects for the 2017 NHL draft. In seven games with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings this year, Mattheos has five points in seven games. For Canada Red, Maxime Comtois will be a flashy forward to keep an eye on. He is currently projected as top 10 pick in the 2017 NHL draft and was a first overall choice in the Quebec Major Junior League Draft last year. Comtois is on fire in the QMJHL so far this season, with
17 points in 14 games as a rookie. Fans can now also purchase single game tickets for $10 for pre-tournament games, $15 for preliminary rounds, $20 for quarter-final and $25 for the bronze and gold medal games. Exclusive evening packages as well as ‘Family-4-Pack’ (pre-tournament and preliminary round) are also still available. The first round of pre-tournament games will begin on Oct. 30 before the tournament officially gets underway on Nov. 1 with Canada Black taking on Canada White in Dawson Creek. From Nov. 1 to 5, both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek will have two games daily, at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The gold medal game will be on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek and will also be shown on TSN. All other tournament games will be broadcast on the web through FASTHockey at www. hockeycanada.ca/wu17. sports@ahnfsj.ca

From the P harmacist’s File
Celiac Disease Description Celiac disease is a chronic disorder that has a genetic component. When an individual with celiac disease ingests gluten, it triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. The result is that certain nutrients cannot be absorbed properly. What is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in many grains including wheat, barley and rye. Since wheat flour is the most commonly used flour, foods such as bread, pasta and pastries are likely to contain gluten. Gluten is not only found in food products. Certain medications and beauty care products also contain gluten. Risk factors Anyone can develop celiac disease. In fact, the prevalence of celiac disease in North America is close to 1%. In some individuals, it can develop in childhood, while in others, it can be triggered by stressful events (surgery, pregnancy, infection or intense emotional stress). Some are at greater risk for developing the disorder. • Women are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop celiac disease than men. Men however, tend to be more severely affected. • It is more common in Caucasians. • People with a relative who suffers from the disease is also more likely to develop celiac disease. About 10% of those with celiac disease have a close relative who also has the disease. • Individuals with type 1 diabetes, thyroid disorders or trisomy are also at greater risk. Symptoms Symptoms vary greatly. Some symptoms are typical gastrointestinal problems, while others are the result of nutritional malabsorption. It is good to know that the severity of symptoms is not related to the severity of the disease. Common intestinal symptoms • Diarrhea • Abdominal distension Symptoms related to poor absorption • Anemia miscarriages • Fatty stools • Growth delay, short • Repeated height spontaneous • Tingling and
numbness • Joint pain • Headache • Fatigue • Mouth ulcers • Muscle spasms Complications If left untreated, celiac disease can lead to numerous, more serious complications including: • The development • Cancer of autoimmune • Infertility disorders • Osteoporosis • Thyroid disorders Diagnosis A diagnosis of celiac diseases requires several steps. The disease is first suspected based on the patient’s symptoms. Then, blood tests are used to measure the levels of certain antibodies. The key to confirming the diagnosis however, lies in an intestinal biopsy. Treatment Once celiac disease is confirmed with a biopsy, the patient must go on a strict glutenfree diet since it is the only way to avoid long-term complications associated with celiac disease. Individuals with the disorder must not only avoid foods that contain large amounts of grains, but must also avoid products that contain trace amounts since ingesting even a very small quantity of gluten is enough to cause damage. It is imperative that anyone diagnosed with celiac disease consult a dietician. Improvement of symptoms is noticeable in the days and weeks after gluten is eliminated from the diet. Approximately 90% of those with celiac disease respond well to a gluten-free diet. Since celiac disease is responsible for the malabsorption of several nutrients, blood tests and examinations must be performed to determine whether nutritional deficiencies are present. The nutrients most often affected are folic acid, vitamins A, B12, D, E and K, iron and calcium. Depending on the results, supplementation may be required to make up for the deficiencies. r0011010802

JAMESTOWN
The mid-size Jamestown looks invitingly solid, familiar and comfortable. Living spaces are all on one floor in this contemporary ranch-style home, except for the deep bonus room upstairs. Eye-catching gables and an array of nostalgic multipaned windows face the street, even spanning the tops of both doors to the three-car garage. Tapered columns, seated on stone veneer bases, highlight the covered porch. Softly muted light spills into the entry through sidelights and glass in the upper door. One bedroom is immediately to the right, while an opening to the left leads to an alcove outside another bedroom and a full bathroom. Linen storage fills one end of the alcove. Further along the entry hall, you pass a coat closet just before reaching the open kitchen on the right. Double doors on the left open into what could be a fourth bedroom, or home office. This room also offers easy rear access to cables linked to devices in the

great room's media cabinet. The kitchen's Lshaped eating bar bounds the great room on one side, and the dining room on the other. The great room has a fireplace and the dining room boasts a builtin hutch and buffet. Standing at the kitchen sink, you can stay involved in conversations in both spaces, and track activities on the covered patio as well. Long stretches of counters and cabinets rim the kitchen's other two sides, linked by a walk-in closet tucked into their corner juncture. A hallway off the dining area leads to the owners' suite and bonus room stairs, plus a convenient pocket bathroom and a pass-through utility room linked to the Jamestown's garage. Owners' suite amenities include a large, luxurious bathroom, a roomy walk-in closet, and direct patio access. Associated Designs is the original source for the Jamestown 30-827. With Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart set to retire from the Sprint Cup Series, could Greg Biffle be next? Biffle, who turns 46 in December, is older than both Gordon and Stewart, and is the oldest active driver in NASCAR’s top series. Biffle said his contract with Roush Fenway Racing runs through the end of the 2017 season and he has every intention to honor it. He admits he isn’t sure what his future holds beyond ‘17, but at least for now, he’s not ready or willing to put a timetable on how much longer he’ll keep driving in the Sprint Cup Series. “I’ve got my own plan. I’m enjoying driving these cars and love what I do,” said Biffle.

7) Jeff Gordon This week’s race is the sixth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and the third race of the Contender Round. Talladega Superspeedway is one of the best known motorsports facilities in the world with over forty years of racing tradition. Records for both speed and competition have been established at Talladega. The backstretch is nearly 4,000 feet long with a total frontstretch of 4,300 feet, making it the largest oval track on the NASCAR circuit and allowing stock cars to reach speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. The track’s true dominator had been Dale Earnhardt, who posted 10 NASCAR Cup wins. The speedway can accommodate more than 143,000 fans and has a 212-acre infield.

Joey Logano spun race leader Matt Kenseth in Turn 1 with less than five laps left in the Hollywood Casino 400. Logano went on to win the race after a green-white-checkeredflag restart that sent the race two laps past its scheduled distance of 267 laps. The driver of the No. 22Team Penske Ford has monopolized the Contender Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, having won back-to-back races at Charlotte and Kansas. The victory was Logano’s second at the 1.5-mile track -- the first coming in last year’s Chase -his fifth of the season and the 13th of his career. He finished .491 seconds ahead of runner-up Denny Hamlin, who held off Jimmie Johnson at the stripe to take the second spot. Johnson ran third, followed by Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch.

Last Week: Emiliano Grillo won the Frys.com Open
?
Rory McIlroy had a narrow escape on Saturday when a drive from big-hitting and eventual tournament winner Argentine Emiliano Grillo missed him by inches during the third round of the Frys.com Open in California. The world number three had just played a chip shot from next to the green at the driveable par-four 17th when Grillo’s drive landed “inches” from a surprised McIlroy, who clearly received no warning that he was in danger of being hit by the ball. “Missed me by a couple inches. Would’ve put me out of my misery, to be honest with you,” McIlroy told reporters after another frustrating day on the greens.
Lessons from the Golf Pro The chip-and-run shot is one of the most difficult parts of the game to master, yet it is the part of our game that we spend the least amount of time working on. This nonchalant approach to the chip shot is what separates the cream of the crop from the remainder of the field. Here are a few easy steps to practice whenever you have that difficult chip-and-run shot in front of you. Narrowing your stance is the first bit of advice. If you are a right-handed player, put more weight on your left foot to keep the loft out of your shot. When you are ready to take the shot, play the ball inside your right foot with your hands positioned ahead of the ball. Finally, make a putt-like motion, keeping your wrists firm and strike the ball with a clean, crisp stroke.
