Tips for Styling Jewelry and Accessories in the Winter Time Once the sun-kissed skin and airy designs of summer have given way to layers of bulky fabrics, making a fashion statement becomes more of a challenge. Although there are fewer open necklines and exposed ear lobes where jewelry can be easily seen, there are some ways women can add interest to all types of winter wear. The right choices in jewelry and accessories can make any outfit or outerwear look as fashionable as it is functional. Selecting the Right Kind of Jewelry Winter clothing is typically heavier, deeper in color, and covers a larger portion of the body. To be noticed, jewelry will need to have these same characteristics. Deep jewel tones create a flattering palette for winter wear, adding rich color to dull outfits and giving the woman who wears them a colorful glow. One way to translate this into winter jewelry is through colorful pendants. An ammolite pendent combines the deep blues, greens, reds, and golds that make the perfect complementary piece to even the most drab winter looks. It’s common knowledge for most women that a necklace must fit into the neckline of an outfit in order to look its best. What many do not realize is that the perfect accessory to wear with a cowl neck or turtleneck may be a bracelet. This is especially true when the high-neck top is used as a layering piece. A necklace may get lost or simply look out of place with multiple necklines, but a gold nugget bracelet adds sophistication that is visible and which carries through the style even after you put your coat on. Statement Jewelry Statement jewelry seems like the obvious choice for styling a wintertime wardrobe, but it is an approach that you should take with caution. Statement jewelry wasn’t meant to be worn in abundance. If you have bright chandelier earrings, a bib necklace, and layers of brightly colored bangles competing for attention, it isn’t going to achieve the desired effect. While you don’t want to leave any area looking too bare, it’s just as important that you don’t overdo. The right piece of jewelry could make the difference in whether a winter outfit looks bold and stylish, bland, or completely out of sorts. Accessorizing Your Outerwear According to Daily Mail, the average woman will own 248 coats and jackets between the ages of 18 and 80. That number becomes a lot more realistic when you realize that is only 3.4 garments per year. Coats and jackets have become just as diverse in style, length, fabric, and color as any of the other types of clothing women buy. If you want the best features of each coat or jacket to stand out, it requires the right accessories. Too often, women purchase a scarf, hat, and gloves in a neutral color, with the intention of wearing them with multiple coats. Failing to accessorize an individual piece of outerwear is a missed opportunity to turn it into a fashion statement. Even a classic wool pea coat or leather blazer will take on a more intentional appearance when you add a draped scarf that fills the neckline with contrasting texture and color. A Note on Texture

Women frequently buy black, either because they like the way it looks on them or because the styles of clothing they like only come in black. A simple way to dress up black clothing is by changing the texture of some parts. For example, add black patent leather boots to a long wool skirt. You can also add textured tights for interest and warmth. Velvet, corduroy, feathers, and fringe are some examples of different textures that you can mix together for a more fashionable statement. Jewelry also has different textures. The smooth, simple lines of sterling silver differ greatly from those of gold nugget jewelry. While some choices in jewelry are made for the way they coordinate with the outfit, others are preferred because they create a contrast. Color, size, and texture should always be kept in mind when choosing any accessory, in order to get the end result that is desired. A little extra effort to select the right accessories can make a big difference in how stylish a woman’s winter wardrobe looks and feels.
