Introduction Tigers! These magnificent and powerful animals are the largest cat species currently in the world. These large animals can range from 4-10 feet long. Most male tigers weigh about 420 pounds. Tigresses (females) weigh about 300 pounds. They have red-orange to brownish-yellow pelts. Their pelts have beautiful black strips.

Habitat Tigers live in forest habitats. They are known to live in the forests in A mur-Heilong, Eastern Himalayas, Borneo and Sumatra, and Greater Mekong. Tigers only live in areas where that contain everything they need to survive, such as water, food, and shelter. Sometimes, tigers climb trees and even may sleep in trees.

Diet T igers are carnivores and hunt their own food. In a lot of zoos,

the staff hides the tiger's meals so the tiger is somewhat hunting its own food. In the wild, tigers depend a lot on sight and sound. Tigers actually try to avoid humans. If they do eat a human, it is probably because the tiger is sick, wounded or feels threatened. Tigers eat a lot of different species of animals ranging from deer all the way to young elephants and rhinos.

Reproduction Like humans, tigers are warm blooded and give birth to live babies. Tigers give birth to two to three cubs every two years. Did you know that if all the cubs in a tiger’s litter die, a second litter may be produced within five months?

Why are they endangered?

There are about 3,200 tigers left in the wild. Tigers are endangered because of human desire for their fur and humans destroying their habitats. How does this affect their population? Poachers and other people hunt down tigers just for their skin and sometimes bones. Other people invade the tigers’ habitat and space.

Why should we help? Tigers are a huge role in the food chain. If tigers became extinct, the food chain would get more unbalanced. This means that some species will increase in population too much and some will decrease in population too much because a major food source (the tiger) is gone from the Earth. We should help tigers build their population to keep healthy ecosystems. The ecosystems help supply both nature and people with what we need to survive.

How can we help these animals? You can help increase the population of tigers by ending the demand for tiger parts. Do not buy poacher products. Tigers are decreasing a lot because of habitat loss. Help protect parklands that protect tigers. You can donate to a reliable resource that helps endangered animals, such as WWF (World Wildlife Funds).
