ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION

BUSINESS LAW

CIVIL & CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

Students who have or develop a strong interest in practicing in a particular field may benefit from electing to concentrate their studies. Students who are less certain, who want to study a broad curriculum, or who have a strong interest not matched by any concentration, may not want to concentrate.

The Alternative Dispute Resolution concentration prepares students for careers as mediators, arbitrators or consultants in conflict resolution by teaching them mediation, negotiation and arbitration skills to resolve conflict—without the need for a formal trial or hearing.

A concentration in Business Law gives students the opportunity to develop legal skills relevant to the business world. Careers in this field include corporate lawyer, labor arbitrator, labor leader or labor union counsel, international trade attorney, business executive and corporate consultant.

Through conferences, debates and courses, students can learn from some of the leaders in the field. Beyond the classroom, Albany, as New York’s capital, provides students with opportunities to experience work with the court system or legislative policy around rights.

Concentrations are similar to undergraduate majors. However, unlike the typical undergraduate major, a student does not have to select a concentration. The faculty has approved 14 concentrations as additions to the academic program.

J.D./Master of Business Administration WITH THE COLLEGE OF SAINT ROSE

Earn two degrees in three or four years. Combining a law degree from Albany Law School with a graduate degree in another field is a powerful combination. At Albany Law School we collaborate with other colleges and universities in the Capital Region and New York City to offer joint degrees in several fields. These programs provide students with a rich educational experience and a broad range of professional opportunities while allowing them to complete two degrees in three or four years of full-time study. Students earning a joint degree spend their first year at Albany Law School. The arrangement of the remaining three years is flexible. At the end of the time, students have a J.D. from Albany Law and a master’s degree from the partner institution.

The J.D./M.B.A. program provides graduate students with the skills and knowledge to promote integration between the fields of law and business administration. Due to the complementary nature of these fields, certain law courses are readily applicable to the M.B.A. degree and, likewise, certain M.B.A. courses satisfy requirements of the J.D. The program incorporates concepts such as innovation, global competitiveness, risk management, entrepreneurship, optimizing capital, cost of capital and right sizing.
