f r o m T h e d i r e C To r To support this effort, the AMA was recently selected to participate in the Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program which enabled us to engage a team of two preservation professionals. An art conservator and architect spent three days meeting with staff and trustees and surveying the Belk building and the museum’s collection stored in Atlanta. From their comprehensive report, preventive conservation priorities will be identified and help the museum prioritize its collections care efforts to anticipate problems before they happen. The work that our two CAP assessors did will provide the narrative for a larger grant to build the very specialized collections storage space that we will need going in to a new building. While we are excited about our future downtown, we fully understand that this will not happen overnight and could take two to three years before we are able to open our new facility.

Paula Bacon Williams, Executive Director Ripley Bell, Jr., President, AMA Board of Trustees Without a doubt, 2017 has been one for the books. Surviving straight line winds and getting our museum up and running by August was nothing short of a miracle. We had a lot of help and we will be forever grateful to our museum friends and colleagues from around the country - and to our community who let us know that there was a deep void without an art museum in Southwest Georgia.

Until that time, we will continue to operate in our current location and offer the quality programs and exhibitions that this community deserves. We hope you will take the opportunity to see the gorgeous collection of 30 colorful and creatively designed quilts by African-American quilt makers and the fabulous prints on loan from Bruce and Hope Campbell’s private collection. Take advantage of our free admission, sign up for an art class or enjoy one of our new after-hours events that begin on Feb 2. And don’t forget to bring your children to the programs specifically designed to spark their imagination and creativity. Happy Holidays!

Shortly after the storm, we were approached by the city to move our facility downtown. With much deliberation and soul searching done by the board and staff, we know that it is the right thing to do. We are excited about the possibilities that are ahead as we plan new spaces for our exhibitions, our public and private events, and exciting areas where our children can laugh and learn and create. We have chosen the former Belk building on the corner of Washington and Broad, which includes the adjacent building (the former Western Auto building) now a dance studio. The dance studio will come down and in its place, a sculpture garden and greenspace will be incorporated. We are in the due diligence phase of this project and will not close until April of 2018. This will allow us the opportunity to move forward in a deliberate and responsible manner.

Mary Lee Bendolph is one of the renowned quilters from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Her quilts have been featured on United States postage stamps, in a number of exhibitions of quilts from the community of Gee’s Bend, and in her own solo quilt exhibition. Despite having her quilts widely displayed in museums across the country, Bendolph does not view her quilts as art, but instead sees them as practical household goods.

From Heart to Hand

African-American Quilts from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts November 30, 2017 through February 24, 2018

Throughout history, quilts have held an important and cherished place in our culture, particularly in the American South. Though the materials and techniques of quilt making may be common; quilts, as process, as art, and as image, embody the very fabric of our country. In the late 20th century several communities in Alabama, including Gee’s Bend and Eutaw, received national attention as a result of the scholarship that focused specifically on the historic context of quilts in the rural environment, and this scholarship also inspired a new appreciation for their aesthetic appeal. A collection of 30 colorful and creatively designed quilts by African-American quilt makers, primarily of West Alabama, will open at the Albany Museum of Art and will run through February 24, 2018. The quilts are a part of the permanent collection of the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts in Montgomery, Alabama. Most were made between the mid-1950s and the end of the 20th century, and represent the major themes in traditional quilt making. The exhibition includes examples of pieced quilts, appliqué, as well as the improvisational techniques and use of unconventional materials that are common practice for contemporary quilt makers. The quilts are grouped within three sections: Tradition: Patterns from the

Past, Improvisation: Practical Invention, and An Unconventional Canvas: The Quilts of Yvonne Wells. The exhibition sections are designed to introduce traditional patterns and to show the improvisations upon these patterns that distinguish the work of individual quilters. Modern quilt making is exemplified in the exhibition by a group of outstanding narrative quilts by Tuscaloosa quilt maker, Yvonne Wells.

Mary Maxtion’s version of the Everybody Quilt is a colorful and highly structured geometric design. In the language of quilts, this collection of blocks made from different patterns would be known as a “sampler.”

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts began its collection of African-American quilts from West Alabama in 2004 by acquiring the collection of Mr. Kempf Hogan of Birmingham, Michigan. Hogan assembled the collection over a period of many years with the guidance and expertise of the late Dr. Robert Cargo, of Robert Cargo Folk Art Gallery, formerly of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The two men identified the most

important quilt makers working in the region and began gathering the works systematically to exemplify the finest achievements of these self-taught artists, and to represent the breadth of their talent and creativity. The total holdings of the museum’s quilt collection have expanded to include more than 60 examples by such

master quilters as Mary Maxtion, Lureca Outland, Nora Ezell, and Yvonne Wells. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Walter and Frances Buzl Foundation.

Yvonne Wells’ quilts are generally classified as “story” or “narrative” quilts; their imagery communicates themes that have personal meaning for the quilter. She makes many quilts in which the imagery is spiritual in nature. When Rosa Parks refused to surrender her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in December of 1955, she ignited a movement that resulted in major social change in America. In this quilt, Wells pays homage to Parks, showing the “first lady of Civil Rights” as a large figure towering over her environment, grounded by an Alabama state flag. At the top is an image of the city bus. Walking figures represent the protestors who engaged in the Montgomery bus boycott that resulted from Mrs. Parks’ stand.

The female figure has been a subject genre in Western art for three millennia. The Intaglio Figure is an exhibition of etchings executed in studios in San Francisco, New York, and Indianapolis by 12 modern and contemporary American artists. The variations of the processes utilized and styles of these printmakers provides a look into the varied and intricate application of the etching process to the creation of the final print.

The Italian word “intaglio” (in-TAL-ee-oh) which means “incised,” is the family of printing techniques in which the image is incised into the surface of a plate and the sunken area holds the ink. Etching, along with aquatint, engraving, drypoint, and mezzotint are all intaglio methods of creating plates from which fine art prints are made. During the Renaissance, etching was initially developed for the decoration of armor and weapons. Then artists began using this method of artistic expression. One of the early practitioners of the use of etching in creating fine art images was Rembrandt van Rijn. These prints are on loan from the private collection of Bruce and Hope Campbell.

What emerges is a rich portrait of a steadfastly independent and prolific artist. COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE WiTh dr. naJuana p. lee and dr. gloria J. rosario february 17 | 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The current socio-political climate in the United States has reignited conversation about race and racism and K-12 educators have continued to express concern over the impact of colorblind attitudes and policy on student outcomes and their communities. As a means of addressing these concerns, this session facilitates discussions among educators, civic leaders, and the community’s citizens, placing race at the center by using works of art as a catalyst toward deeper understanding of the intersection of racial identity, politics and social

and educational outcomes in America. Using the works of Fred Wilson and Kara Walker, supplemented with pieces from the Albany Museum of Art, the presenters will address strategies for tackling difficult topics related to race. This conversation is beneficial to all those looking to have a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding race and racism. Register in advance by calling 229-439-8400 or visit albanymuseum.com.
