ALBANY MUSEUM OF AR T | Winter 2019-2020
FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the core values upon which the Albany Museum of Art was first envisioned. Advocating for “the essential value of art to community,” the group of individuals responsible for the creation of this institution in 1964 based its ethos on the values of “curiosity, appreciation, understanding, and passion for art in everyday life.” This is an immensely important time of transformation for the AMA as we prepare to map the path toward the goal of relaunching this critically important Albany institution in the heart of downtown, following the capital campaign we plan to launch in the coming months. We continue today to strive to reach our diverse audience through relevant exhibitions, preservation and educational programming. Andrew James Wulf, Ph.D. Executive Director Albany Museum of Art
As we plan for this endeavor, we can look retrospectively and prospectively at our ideals upon which we were created as the premier arts and cultural hub for the Albany region, where we will build our community while celebrating its diversity, cultures and uniqueness. With our future downtown location, we will improve our accessibility to our community and grow as an organization. We shall continue our track record of dynamic exhibitions and education programs, while always keeping an eye toward how this museum can be of use more and more to the Albany community and our visitors from further afield. While the impressive and broad permanent collection is the heart of this institution, this museum is more than a collection, more than an exhibition space, and more than a regional art museum. It is steadily becoming a cultural center, not just for one segment of Albany’s population, but for an extensive, diverse audience that transcends social, political and geographical barriers. It is succeeding in its efforts to be a safe haven for “courageous conversations” about individual identity, including issues surrounding race, sexuality, and a host of other ideas that are in dire need of civil discussion in this fraught and polarized world in need of healing. As designer Bruce Mau suggests, “The art museum represents one of the few public spaces where the volume can be turned down and contemplation encouraged.” This winter, we are here to celebrate the wonderful work of two boundary pushing African-American artists—Dean Mitchell, a painter well known for his figurative works of everyday life and ordinary people, and Yanique Norman, a multidisciplinary artist from Atlanta whose “afro-futurist” work interrogates themes of alienation, trauma and post-colonial identity. With deepest gratitude to the AMA’s dynamic and talented staff, our activist and enthusiastic board, and members throughout the community, I am elated to see this museum is on track to becoming the beacon for all dynamic expressions of art, from the traditional to the contemporary, here in Southern Georgia. My family and I are proud to call Albany our new home, and we embrace this city’s storied past and look forward to being enthusiastic contributors to its hopeful

ART BALL 2020: A FLAIR FOR ART Saturday, Feb 15, 2020 | 6:30 pm The evening of Saturday, Feb 15, 2020 will be one in which Albany demonstrates a true Flair for Art! Art Ball will make its long anticipated return with a festive evening at the Albany Museum of Art that will include a great dinner, terrific music, and a wide array of items and trips for silent and live auctions. “We are looking forward to this special evening to celebrate with friends the AMA’s many successes,” AMA Executive Director Dr. Andrew Wulf said. “This vibrant event raises critical funds to support the museum’s highest priorities, including the reimagining of the future of this marvelous institution.” This year’s event is being chaired by Margaret “Puddin’” Bass, who is working on details for the gala with her amazing group of volunteers. “I’m excited about Andrew being on board, working with us and giving us fresh ideas,” Bass said. “If you haven’t already, mark your calendar for Feb 15th. You should have gotten a ‘save the date’ card already, so if you haven’t, let us know. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!” Art Ball 2020 will certainly be an event that exemplifies its theme, A Flair for Art. Event planner Kate Grubb has designed a fantastic evening. The black-tie-optional dinner, which will be held in the Haley Gallery, will be catered by Stewbo’s Group following a cocktail hour.
Dancing will follow dinner in the Harry and Jane Willson Auditorium, with music by the popular band Close to Midnight During the evening, those attending will have the opportunity to bid on items and trips that are more than outstanding investments and wonderful experiences. They are critical for raising funds needed for the AMA to fulfill its mission of making world-class art and robust programming fully accessible to everyone in Albany and Southwest Georgia. Donations received through the Libby Womack Paddle Raise help fund educational programming, art camp scholarships, and internships that benefit both the student and the museum. “The proceeds will go to help fund new exhibitions, provide free admission, and the creation and continuation of exciting programming,” Bass said. “Please plan to be a part of this fun, celebratory evening.” The return of the AMA gala has been highly anticipated after the devastation of Hurricane Michael forced the cancellation of Art Ball 2019. Tables will sell out early, so please do not delay in reserving your seats or table. You can get more information at albanymusuem.com/art-ball-2020, or email chloe.hinton@albanymuseum.com.
FROM THE DIRECTOR CONTINUED future. We recognize Albany has its own spiritual and cultural identity which the museum can better mirror and embrace. Downtown is the perfect location for the introduction of what will become South Georgia’s premier art museum. I applaud the self-reflection and tireless work of my predecessors, board members, and museum supporters who have given voice to this vision, which shall be grounded in trust with the residents of Albany. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we continue down this awe-inspired path. Thank you for helping us make a difference in the life of our community, and here’s to a happy, safe and prosperous 2020! All the best, Andrew James Wulf, Ph.D.

LOOKING AT AMERICA AND PAINTING HOW I WANT, WHAT I WANT AND HOW I SEE IT Dean Mitchell
During his four-decade long career, Dean Mitchell, of Tampa, Fla., has become known for his figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. Deprivation, an exhibition of works by the Pittsburgh, Pa., native, opens Jan 9, 2020 in the Haley Gallery of the Albany Museum of Art and continues through March 28, 2020. “I was happy to be introduced to Dean Mitchell's work through the AMA Exhibitions Committee,” Curator Didi Dunphy said. She describes Mitchell as “a skilled artist engaged in the romance of the land through paint and brush, yet challenging the very nature of that subject.” He is well accomplished in egg temperas, oils and pastels. “His poetic urban and rural scenes are rich in tone, but vibrate with the desolation of so much of America's landscapes,” Dunphy said. “Beautifully rendered, deprived neighborhoods and structures—populated by an occasional figure in these vacant environs— remind us of diminishing humanity.” Mitchell, who earned his MFA from the Columbus

College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio, maintains a deep connection with Quincy, Fla., a small industrial city where he was raised and inspired by his grandmother. "I'm looking for freedom regardless of painting styles and labels imposed on artists in regards to race and ethnic origins,” Mitchell says, “total freedom to explore my full potential as an artist." Dunphy notes that Mitchell's own story “is one of unusual pursuit and admirable accomplishments.” “An African-American man growing up in a depressed small city during the Civil Rights Movement of the ‘60s and ‘70s with the vision of being a fine artist was not

A small snapshot of Mitchell at the White House hangs on the wall at his Quincy location—aptly named after his grandmother—the Marie Brooks Gallery.” Mitchell has been featured in publications including The New York Dean Mitchell, Little House in New Mexico, 2018, acrylic Times, the Christian Science Monitor, Southwest Art, Art of the West, American Art Museum, Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Rockwell Museum, Artist, Western Art Collector, Artists Magazine, Fine Art Corning, N.Y.; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, International, Art News, The Art of Watercolour Magazine, Overland Park, Kansas; Beach Museum of Art, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and The Outwin: Manhattan, Kansas; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, American Portraiture Today at the National Portrait Ariz.; Gadsden Art Center, Quincy, Fla.; Whitney Gallery. DO NOT HAND ME OVER TO THE IMPURE WHITENESS OF NOON: A HEMINGS ELEGY Yanique Norman Yanique Norman is a multimedia artist whose first solo museum exhibition, Do Not Hand Me Over to the Impure Whiteness of Noon: A Hemings Elegy, opens Jan 9, 2020 in the Albany Museum of Art’s West Gallery and continues through March 28, 2020. Norman’s work primarily deals with privilege and nationalistic ideologies, all the while pondering a decolonial future. In an ongoing series that predominately features collage on paper, video and sculpture, Norman reworks official portraits of presidential wives in allusion to a troubled past. Her work serves as a reclamation project by reimagining iconic images to both reflect and institute a fungible counter narrative regarding blackness. Currently based out of Atlanta, Norman is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned an MFA, and Georgia State University, where she received her BFA. Her work has been included in recent exhibitions include NADA House, New York; Sullivan Galleries, Chicago; Sandler Hudson Gallery, Atlanta; Hudgens Center for the Arts, Duluth; Mast, Atlanta; Illges Gallery at Columbus State University, Columbus, Ga.; Gallery 72, Atlanta; Zuckerman Museum of Art, Kennesaw, Ga.; the Atlanta Contemporary, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. Norman’s work is in the public collections of the High Museum, Hammonds House Museum and the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum. In 2018, she was awarded the Susan Antinori Visual Artist Grant.

CONTINUING EXHIBITIONS Through Feb 8, 2020 Origami Variations: Inspired by her travels, particularly those to Japan, Gloria Garfinkel’s works created over a four-decade career combine her interest in science, math and color with her conviction that anything is possible. Her unquenchable curiosity and constant invention are evident in her paintings, prints and sculptures in the Haley Gallery exhibition. Through Jan 4, 2020 Smoke Bombs and Border Crossings: Photographer Nancy Newberry draws inspiration from classic Spaghetti Western films as she explores fact and fiction of the legendary Wild West in her imagery. She appropriates, reinterprets and questions the mythologies of the West in her exhibition in the East Gallery. Georgia Artists Guild of Albany: The 26th annual juried exhibition of the Albany guild includes 19 works by nine area artists. Works include paintings, photographs and sculptures. The exhibition is showing in the West Gallery.

THE ART OF SOUND
Tuesday, Jan 21, 2020 | 6 pm
Saturday, Feb 1, 2020 | 9:30-11 am
The AMA Art Lovers Book Club meets bimonthly to discuss novels related to art. An Artist of a Floating World is the topic for the 6 pm Jan 21 meeting in the Willson Auditorium.
Photo courtesy of Amanda M. Borghi
The first meeting of 2020 for the AMA Art Lovers Book Club will focus on Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel An Artist of a Floating World. The bimonthly meeting is set for 6 pm on Tuesday, Jan 21 in the Albany Museum of Art’s Willson Auditorium. Set in Japan after World War II, Ishiguro’s novel tells the story of the book narrator, Masuji Ono, an older painter of faltering reputation who reflects on his life and the way he lived it. As Ono struggles to take responsibility of his actions, he also looks for inner peace.
The Albany Museum of Art is partnering with 229Yoga for The Art of Sound at 9:30 am on Saturday, Feb 1, 2020 in the AMA’s Haley Gallery. Participants can expect to unplug, relax and revive their spirit in this Sound Experience, where they will be immersed in a virtual "bath" of healing sounds from quartz crystal bowls, gong and drums. The sound facilitator will be Amanda M. Borghi, a certified sound facilitator and certified yoga trainer. Entry to the Sound Experience will begin at 9 am, but no late entry will be permitted.
So that adequate seating can be set up before the club meeting starts, please RSVP to rsvp@albanymusuem.com by noon on Jan 21. There’s no cost to attend, and members are encouraged to bring a favorite beverage or finger food.
The tones build and evolve, producing a sea of sound that is timeless and alive. The sounds are designed to interact with the body, cleansing and rejuvenating physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Blocks and tensions are washed away, leaving you centered, refreshed, energized, and fully present and connected with the surrounding world.
The final meeting of the 2019-20 season will be on March 17, when the group will discuss I, Juan de Parega by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino. A new season and a new slate of art-inspired novels will start in late spring 2020.
No movement is required of participants. Guests will be invited to lie comfortably on yoga mats in the gallery while they enjoy the sounds during this 40minute experience.
