FROM THE DIRECTOR Every time I speak with a person here in Southwest Georgia about the Albany Museum of Art, our past, our plans, and the bright future ahead of us, I quote the architect Daniel Libeskind, “Cities are not made of bricks. They are made of citizens.” These daily interactions throw into high relief this historic opportunity to advance the cause of the Albany Museum of Art, our move to the former Belk department store downtown, and what this really means. This renovation is all about the new programming, the new vision, and the entire freight of ways this institution situates itself in the larger social landscape. Can we be more equitable, accessible, and inclusive in our welcome to all? Are we going to be more relevant, nimble, and intuitive?

On this theme, I am reminded of one of my favorite episodes of cultural diplomacy. In 1979, Deng Xiaoping was visiting the States and was going to see President Jimmy Carter. The president tells the Kennedy Center folks he wants a one-hour show celebrating a “Performance of American Arts.” The program includes Broadway performers, pianist Rudolf Serkin, folk singer John Denver, and dancers from the Joffrey Ballet. It was remembered among the organizing team that Deng Xiaoping was taunted by Mao’s cultural revolutionaries in 1976 and paraded through Tiananmen Square. And while he protested he sang a song. The idea? Why not get American children to come to the Kennedy Center and sing this song for him? In the month leading up to the performance, the team found kids from local choirs, a schoolteacher who spoke Chinese, and they taught them the song…in Chinese. The evening arrives and the Chinese and American leaders are sitting in their box. One hundred American children walk onto the stage. Not a word was said and no one knew this was about to happen. The kids start singing. Deng Xiaoping stands up. The leader of 700 million people. He walks up on the stage, embraces the kids, with tears streaming down his face. It’s a sensation and nobody knows what this is except for him. Our beloved AMA will continue to go the extra mile to make meaning for our visitors as a center for community. But first, we must be sure we know our audience, one person at a time. Here’s looking forward to a marvelous season of compelling exhibitions and programs. Hope to see you soon!

CUT & PASTE: WORKS OF PAPER Works by Steven L. Anderson, Betsy Cain, Jerushia Graham, Matt Haffner, Imi Hwangbo, Hannah Israel, Elizabeth Lide, Teresa Bramlette Reeves, Lucha Rodriguez, Samuel Stabler and Kalina Wińska Cut & Paste: Works of Paper celebrates the relationship of art and paper, the versatile but fragile material that has long been instrumental in the creation of art. The works of 11 Georgia artists included in the show bring awareness of the vitality of paper, demonstrating that it is more than a two-dimensional form. The exhibition opens on Feb 26 in the Haley Gallery of the Albany Museum of Art and continues through June 27, 2020. AMA Guest Curator Didi Dunphy says the exhibition is a further testament to the remarkable talents of Georgia artists. “I have traveled across the state of Georgia, stepping into the different working environments where artists embark on the most amazing of endeavors,” Dunphy said. “ From a studio in a small second bedroom to a clean white cube, the talent in Georgia-based artists astounds.” Noting that this is the second in the Highlighting Contemporary Art in Georgia series, Dunphy said Cut & Paste: Works of Paper “examines ways in which working artists manipulate paper to create remarkable and varied works of art. From detailed hand cutting to mark making, draping and folding, casting and silhouettes, both wall-bound and sculptural reliefs consider the current possibilities of paper and highlight artists using these magical techniques, leading viewers to suspend their belief of material nature.” “My hope is that all enjoy the awe and amazement of the world of works of paper as well as the wonderful talents living in the state of Georgia,” she said. Artists whose work is included in the exhibition are:

Steven L. Anderson, of Atlanta, an exhibiting artist and co-director of Day & Night Projects, an artist run gallery in Atlanta;

Betsy Cain, of Savannah, whose work includes paintings, works on paper and cut-outs influenced by salt marshes, tidal creeks and barrier island that surround her home;

Jerushia Graham, of Atlanta. Currently the museum coordinator for the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking, she exhibits both nationally and internationally, including her show Undercurrents last spring and summer at the AMA;

Matt Haffner, of Atlanta, who has been awarded serval prestigious grants, fellowships and residencies. A professor of photography and video at Kennesaw State University, he exhibits nationally and internationally;

Imi Hwangbo, of Athens, who has received several international artist grants and fellowships. She is a professor of art at the University of Georgia;
•
Hannah Israel, of Columbus, who has shown extensively and who has received several residencies and fellowships. She has also curated numerous solo and group and exhibitions. She is a professor of art and gallery director at Columbus State University;

Elizabeth Lide, of Atlanta, whose work has been exhibited extensively and who has work in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and High Museum of Art. She is a fellow of the Working Artist Project at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA);
•
Teresa Bramlette Reeves, of Atlanta, who is a Fulbright Scholar and exhibits nationally and internationally. She is recently retired as senior curator at the Zuckerman Museum of Art in Kennesaw;
•
Lucha Rodriguez, of Atlanta, who has exhibited globally, with solo and group shows throughout the United States, India, Mexico, China and France;
•
Samuel Stabler, of Athens, who shows in New York, Los Angeles and Athens, as well as Paris and Berlin. He is involved with curation at several institutions in the state of Georgia. In fall 2018 and early winter 2019, his work was included in the exhibition Home Tour: Artists Investigating Interiors, Domesticity and Identity at the AMA;

MIDLANDS Works by Courtney McClellan
Midlands, the result of a two-year project by artist and writer Courtney McClellan, intersects art and performance with academic pursuits in the field of law. The exhibition opens April 2 in the Albany Museum of Art’s East Gallery, and continues through June 27, 2020.
“The UGA Mock Trial is a competitive club in which students argue fictional legal cases, engaging in simulation, improvisation and collaborative writing,” she said. “They meet frequently, and they enthusiastically act out the details of a fictional case, at times arguing both the prosecution and the defense. “
“We are pleased to present Midlands, a multimedia installation,” AMA Guest Curator Didi Dunphy said. She said that McClellan, a visiting assistant professor at the University of Georgia, investigated and examined the structure of the UGA Mock Trial where students in fictional Midlands acted as attorneys, jury and judges to work out complex legal problems.
The artwork from her study exists “at the intersection of media,” she said, adding they are “translations” between people and media. ” Through collaboration, research, and intermedia practice, I produce hybrids: performing objects, objectified text, and performative writing that I exhibit through scripted actions, sculptures, installations, and occasionally essays.”
“I am interested in professionals who write and perform unstable truths,” McClellan said. “By this, I mean that I study people who act as gatekeepers in an age when truth is pluralistic, difficult to define, and/or nonexistent. Particularly today, these professionals are tasked with the impossible, but the necessary. I collaborate with attorneys, journalists, court reporters, law students and teachers in order to explore how their important but fallible actions offer grave, complex, transformative outcomes.”
McClellan, from Greensboro, N.C., has a BA in Studio Art and Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. A Fountainhead Fellow in the Sculpture and Extended Media Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, she was the Sculpture Fellow at UGA in 2015-17 and a Museum of Fine Arts Boston Traveling Fellow in 2017-18. Awarded the 2019-20 Roman J. Witt Residency at the University of Michigan, she will create Witness Lab, an interdisciplinary, collaborative project with Stamps School of Art students and faculty. She also is a 201920 Working Artist Project Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.
Her research on the performance of rhetoric in institutional space led McClellan, based in Atlanta, to study the university’s mock trial team, which is nationally ranked.

NEW WORK BY BRIAN WILLMONT An exhibition of new work by Brian Willmont, an artist based in Brooklyn, N.Y., opens in the Albany Museum of Art’s West Gallery on April 2. The show continues through June 27, 2020. AMA Guest Curator Didi Dunphy says Willmont investigates beauty with slick and precise directness, creating a hyper-real depiction of patterned decoration. A native of Boston, Mass., Willmont is an artist and curator who earned his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art, graduating with High Distinction. In addition to his art practice, Willmont runs Greenpoint Terminal Gallery in Brooklyn. He has had solo exhibitions at Victori + Mo (New York City), Guerrero Gallery (San Fransico, Calif.), Driscoll Babcock (New York City), Field Projects (New York City), LaMontagne Gallery (Boston, Mass.) and others. RESET: NEW VISION Works by Michael Mallard Michael Mallard’s artwork is said to embody both a great Southern narrative and an unusual juxtaposition of humor and pathos. Visitors will get to see that and his creative process in action during a unique exhibition in the AMA’s Hodges Galley, Reset: New Vision. Mallard, an assistant professor of visual and performing arts at Albany State University, will move his studio into the Hodges Gallery for the exhibition, which opens on April 23 and continues through June 27, 2020. Visitors will not only be able to see his artwork, they’ll be able to see him working on his art.

Jane Ballow, in Antiquing the Easy Way, noted that many people have a room in their house filled with unconnected “motley assortment of oddballs” accumulated from a multitude of places. Mallard brings that unusual amalgamation of experiences, ideas and thoughts to his work. “Our lives are sort of a motley assortment of experiences,” Mallard said. “These experiences, unified in a single life, interact with other individuals’ experiences, thereby enlarging each assortment of experiences. A sort of ‘layering’ of meaning develops in each life. “I approach my work as it represents our lives: layers of meaning developed through time. This compilation yields the excessive quality of my work. I address rather simple ideas that become complex through visual presentation.”

In his four-decade long career, Dean Mitchell, of Tampa, Fla., has become known for his figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. Looking at America and Painting How I Want, What I Want and How I See It is an exhibition of works by the Pittsburgh, Pa., native. "I'm looking for freedom regardless of painting styles and labels imposed on artists in regards to race and ethnic origins,” Mitchell says, “total freedom to explore my full potential as an artist."
DO NOT HAND ME OVER TO THE IMPURE WHITENESS OF NOON: A HEMINGS ELEGY Works by Yanique Norman Through March 28, 2020 | West Gallery Yanique Norman is a multimedia artist from Atlanta whose first solo museum exhibition, Do Not Hand Me Over to the Impure Whiteness of Noon: A Hemings Elegy, is showing in the Albany Museum of Art’s West Gallery. Norman’s work primarily deals with privilege and nationalistic ideologies, all the while pondering a decolonial future. Treviño won a Newberry Award for the novel based on a real portrait that Diego Velázquez, an important painter of the Spanish Golden Age and lead painter for King Phillip IV’s court, made of his slave Juan de Parega. Written in Parega’s voice, the novel tells the story of the man born into slavery in Seville, Spain, in the 1600s. He becomes a valued part of the Velázquez household, helping the artist in his studio. Forbidden by law to engage in the art, Parega paints secretly, but later becomes a notable painter in his own right.

Student exhibitions, public artwork, art festivals and school events raise awareness and support of the visual arts with local and state education officials, business and community leaders, and state and federal legislators. The Albany Museum of Art has a wide array of events and programs for tomorrow’s leaders in March, but also throughout the year. STEAM education programming is at the center of this session conducted 11 am-12:30 pm on the second Thursday of the month for homeschool students in the Albany area. Geared toward K5 through 5th-grade students, the program incorporates current AMA exhibitions in education about science, technology, engineering, art and math.

The AMA Teen Art Board is inviting teenagers in the Albany area to drop by the Albany Museum of Art 7-9 pm on two Fridays, March 13 and April 24. Each will be an evening of art-inspired socializing and bonding with food, music and games. The goal of the Teen Art Board is to inspire creativity in teenagers while having fun, resulting in a positive impact on the community. The organization’s aim is to define and validate creative minds in the high schools and colleges of Southest Georgia. COST: No set admission; donations will be accepted to support the Teen Art Board’s mission.
SPRING FAMILY DAY March 21 | 10 am-1 pm The Albany Recreation & Parks Department and the Albany Museum of Art host a Saturday morning full of art, games and activities for the entire family at Spring Family Day at the AMA. The event is 10 am-1 pm on March 21, 2020 and is free to everyone. The first 100 kids will receive a special gift – a Little Artist Tote Bag. COST: Free
2020 marks the 40th year that the Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County has provided students in Dougherty and Lee counties with an annual opportunity to demonstrate their artistic talents. High school participants will receive ribbons for first, second and third place, and best of show at the awards ceremony set for 1-3:30 pm on Sunday, March 22 at the AMA’s Willson Auditorium. That also will be the opening day for the annual exhibition of the students’ work in the AMA auditorium. The show opens March 24 and continues through April 3. The top-placing artwork in each grade is to be entered in the Georgia District of Kiwanis Art Showcase.

It's a perfect day for yoga, and Bunny is practicing his poses and wishes his friends would do yoga with him. But there are problems. Lizard is too tired, Fox is in a rush, and Bird has the hiccups. This fun activity includes a kids’ yoga class, a reading of the Yoga Bunny book by Brian Russo, and a fun bunny art project. COST: Donation of any amount to support AMA programs.

Campers will enjoy a wide variety of art projects, along with games and activities. After the long winter, they’ll also get to enjoy some time outside. Sign up for the whole week or per day. Congressman Sanford Bishop is inviting high school students who reside in the Second Congressional District of Georgia to participate in the 39th annual Congressional Art Competition. The submissions from students in the district will be on display April 14-17 in the Willson Auditorium at the Albany Museum of Art. All participants and their families are invited to attend the 5:30 pm reception on Friday, April 17 in the auditorium,where the winner will be announced. The district winner’s artwork, along with artwork by winners from other participating congressional districts, will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel, a busy underground walkway to the U.S. Capitol from the House office buildings. The winner will have the unique opportunity to join Congressman Bishop at the 2020 national awards reception in Washington, D.C. The AMA offers to purchase the winning artwork and provides lodging expenses for a parent to accompany the winner to the nation’s capital for the awards reception. Teen Art Prom is an AMA Teen Art Board event dedicated to bringing together young people in the Albany area for a night of fun, dance and artistic expression. On Saturday, May 2 from 7-9 pm, local teens will have a chance to get dressed up in their nicest fit and enjoy the most creative dance of the year!
The AMA’s first American Girl Tea Party was such a success that we just couldn’t wait until fall to bring it back! The second Saturday tea with kids and dolls will be a springtime event set for 1-3 pm on May 2.
It’s an opportunity to showcase teens’ skills in illustration, sculpture, or performance art, such as dancing or poetry. They'll leave this experience knowing more about the creativity in their community, and, hopefully, will have made some new friends. COST: $25 in advance, $20 at the door
Girls and their favorite dolls again will be treated to a special cup of hot tea, fancy treats, and spring fresh crafts selected especially for them and their best friends. AMA INTERNSHIP HELPS PREPARE STUDENT FOR MUSEUM CAREER a year building up his portfolio and saving money before he starts graduate school in fall 2021. “I’m getting a well-rounded art education,” he said. “I do painting, graphic design, ceramics, art history.”
Quadre Curry-Wilkerson, a senior majoring in art at Albany State University, is gaining valuable experience as an intern at the Albany Museum of Art as he prepares for a career in museums. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop making art,” Curry-Wilkerson said, “but I like museums and the role they play in communities, so this (internship) is definitely going to help me work out what type of museum I want to work in and what kind of workspace I want.”
He said he is appreciative of the opportunity to intern at the AMA, saying it has been “beneficial in understanding how a museum works. I’m learning marketing, getting a close look at how you do educational programs, and really the purpose of the museum in a community.” Quadre Curry-Wilkerson
A native of Detroit, he grew up in Lilburn after his family moved to Georgia when he was young. At ASU he has been active in student leadership with the Student Art League, the NAACP, the gospel choir and the Student Government Association, where he serves as president. Curry-Wilkerson will graduate in May with a bachelor of fine arts degree. After graduation, he plans to spend
Previously, he was an intern at the High Museum, but Curry-Wilkerson said his AMA experience may prove more valuable because he is getting a broader view of the overall operation of a museum. “I think I’m being exposed to a lot more, just seeing how you guys (AMA staff ) communicate with each other about different jobs, like membership, marketing, education,” he said. Curry-Wilkerson said he has never considered a career that wasn’t centered on art. “ I’ve never questioned that I was going to be an artist,” he said.
