AGMA/EP Gear Oil
Industrial Extreme Pressure Gear and Rock Drill Oil
General Description
The AGMA/EP Gear Oil series of lubricants are special formula gear lubricants for heavy duty industrial gear sets as specified by the AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association).
AGMA/EP Gear Oils are formulated with premium high quality base oils to provide optimum load carrying capability, water separation and oxidation resistance. The additive system incorporated in this series of oils provides extreme pressure (EP) and anti-wear protection, superior oxidative and thermal stability, increased protection against rust and corrosion and excellent seal compatibility.
At the high localized temperatures achieved under heavy load conditions, the sulfur-phosphorus EP additive in AGMA/EP Gear Oils chemically reacts with the metal surfaces in order to prevent the welding, scoring and galling that may occur as the oil film is broken. By modifying the metal surfaces at contact in this manner, wear is reduced and gear life is extended.
AGMA Gear Oils are not to be used in automotive differential gear sets that require the use of API GL-5 rated gear oils, and are not food-grade products.
Several viscosity grades, as described in the typical properties section, have tackifier added to provide added adhesion for rock drill and pneumatic tool performance.

Gear Lube Service Designations
API Service Designation for Gear Lubricants
The automotive and petroleum industries in cooperation with the American Societyfor Testing and Materials (ASTM), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Petroleum Institute (API) have developed a service classification system to serve as a guide for recommending and marketing gear lubricants. Following is the API description:
API Designation Description
GL-1
Gl-2
GL-3
GL-4
GL-5
Service of automotive spiral bevel and worm gear type axles, manual transmissions and spur gears operating under light load and mild conditions requiring no extreme pressure additives.

Service of automotive hypoid gears operating under both low speed, high load (trucks & tractors) and high speed, low load (passenger car) conditions.
Same as GL-4, but under more severe operating conditions, such as shock loading.
SAE Viscosity Grades for Gear Lubricants
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has devised a method for classifying the viscosity characteristics of gear lubricants as well. Gear lubricant viscosity grades should not be confused with engine oil viscosity grades. A gear lubricant and an engine oil having the same viscosity will have widely different SAE viscosity grade designations as defined in the two viscosityclassifications. For instance, an SAE 80W gear lubricant may have the same viscosity as an SAE 20W or SAE 30 engine oil and SAE 90 gear lubricant viscosity can be similar to that of an SAE 40 or SAE 50 engine oil. Following is a table with the SAE gear lubricant viscosity grades:
Axle and Manual Transmission Lubricant Viscosity Classification
SAE J306 OCT 91 Summary
AGMA and ISO Viscosity Grades
AGMA and ISO Viscosity Grade Classifications
The American Gear Manufacturers Association(AGMA) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) have established viscosity standards for hydraulic fluids and industrial gear lubricants. Following are the AGMA Lubricant Numbers, the corresponding ISO Grade and the viscosityranges:
Note: Compounded oils must have 3-10% suitable animal fats. Non-EP lubricant grades are rust and oxidation inhibited only EP Lubricants are mild Extreme Pressure type.

Grease Types and Characteristics
Grease Consistency
The consistencyof a grease is its hardness, or resistance to movement. A grease with a higher concentration of soap will generally be harder. The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) has published the following numerical scale for classifying the consistencyof greases.
NLGI Grades of Grease
The ASTMWorked Penetration is measured at 77°F and is expressed as tenths of a millimeter of standard cone penetration when released onto the surface of the grease after 60 double strokes in a standard grease worker.
The greases commonly recommended for general lubrication, and the greases most familiar to the public as automotive chassis greases are NLGI #2 grade, or on occasion an NLGI #1 grade.
Common Grease Thickeners and Compatibility
Aluminum Complex Grease
Has good high temperature characteristics, with a dropping point approximately500°F, excellent water tolerance, good shear stability, and responds verywell to additive treatments that enhance performance capabilities, such as oxidation and rust inhibition. Frequentlyused in lubricating food machinery.
Bentone (Clay) Grease
Bentonite clay is treated with a polar activator that will give an electrical charge to the clay particles, thus aligning them to hold the lubricating oil in suspension in a non-soap thickened, grease structure. Not very compatible with other greases, since the electrical charge may be destroyed and soften the grease beyond performance limits. This type of product is often called a No-Melt grease. Has good water resistance, low temperaturepumpabilityand extremely high temperature applications where a non-melting grease is required, the clay structure can aid in setting up a self-formingoil seal where bearing seals are impossible to maintain such as in wheel bearings on high temperature kilncars.
Calcium Grease
Among one of the first types of grease manufactured. Used today largely because they are moderately priced. Manufactured byusing hydrated lime and a fattymaterial. Calcium grease must be used in a lower temperature environment, since theyare limited to approximately150°F. Higher temperatures mayalter the grease structure. Has very good watertolerance.
Lithium (12-Hydroxy Stearate) Grease
A multi-purpose type grease with a butterytexture and dropping point above 350°F. Can be used with occasional temperatures up to 300°F. Lithium grease has excellent resistance to water and breakdown, or softening, by working. Pumpabilityis a verystrong characteristic for this type of grease. The term Multi-Purpose grease is used because they combine, in a single product, desirable characteristics normally found in each of several products. Almost 60% of the total grease market is satisfied bythis type of grease.
Grease Types and Characteristics
Lithium Complex Grease
A newer type of grease, showing manyof the same characteristics as the simple lithium greases, with improved performance in the area of high temperature, high speed bearing life. Dropping point is approximately500°F.
Polyurea Grease
A grease of fairly recent development that does not use a conventional soap thickener. This type of grease has a high dropping point, approximately 470°F, has an ashless structure, excellent water resistance, pumpability and provides superb high temperature bearing life. Often used in electric motors, alternators and in food machinery. Some Polyurea greases are veryshear sensitive, that is, they will soften in dispensing and harden in the bearings. Lighter consistencygreases maygive better performance under these conditions.
Sodium Grease (Soda Soap)
Generally a fibrous textured, stringy grease, that was used as a standard wheel bearing grease for many years. Dropping points will varybetween 300°F to 400°F, and have good shear stability. A low cost grease that has good rust protection but very poor waterresistance.
Grease Compatibility
Grease Compatibility
When two greases are mixed, the resultant mixture often exhibits properties and performancecharacteristics that are markedly inferior to those of either grease by itself. Therefore, it is wise to exercise caution in switching between types of grease that may have compatibility problems. The system should be cleaned of all previous grease when making a switch between grease types. If it is impossible to remove previous grease type from the bearings, grease more frequentlyuntil all traces of previous grease have been flushed out of the bearing.
It is our recommendation not to mix greases with different families of thickeners. Refer to the chart below for a comparison between compatible thickeners.
NLGI Service Classifications
The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) and the American Societyfor Testing and Materials (ASTM) have developed a system to identifylubricating grease properties and applications:
Chassis Service
LA – Service typical of chassis components and universal joints in passenger cars, trucks, and other vehicles operated with frequent republication in non-critical applications. This grease shall satisfactorilylubricate chassis components and universal joints where frequent republication is practiced (at intervals of 2000 miles or less for passenger cars). LubeScan® Used Oil Analysis Program
LubeScan® is a comprehensive used oil analysis program designed as a tool for testing used oil and identifying its contaminates.
LubeScan also can:
• Aid in diagnosing the condition of the customer’s oil in lubricated equipment
• Help indicate excesscontamination
• Assist in determining optimum drainintervals
• Increase potential resale value of testedequipment
The LubeScan used oil analysis program uses sophisticated testing principles to measure small amounts of contaminants such as dirt, wear metals, coolant and fuel dilution in a small oil sample. Using LubeScan on a regular basis can establish a base line or historic trend for that particular equipment and identify abnormallyhigh wear rates or contaminationin the future.Corrective actions can be taken before catastrophic damage occurs if abnormallevels are found. This testing is done on a contract basis with ALS, which also does used oil analysis for manyother large companies.
The first goal, when using a used oil analysis program, is to obtain a representative sample of the oil. Samples taken at normal drain intervals should be obtained mid-stream as the oil is drained from the unit.
You can obtain samples kits by calling CHS Lubricants Customer Service, at 651-355-2402. The modest cost of the sample kit includes the pre-paid mail costs and the cost of the normally included tests. (Other testing maybe available at additional cost to the customer.) Once all of the informationregarding the sample has been included, send the sample to the lab address printed on the box. Once the sample is received and processed, a detailed issued report will be provided to the customer.
Additives
Modern qualitylubricants are blends of scientificallyrefined base oils and chemical additives that provide exceptional performance for long time periods without excessive deterioration. The function and complexity of additive systems are constantly growing as new engine technologies are introduced.
Additives in high quality finished engine oils perform many functions, such as improving performance properties of the base oil, prolonging the life of the oil and reducing deposits and wear. The following are used to help oil perform as expected:
Oxidation Inhibitors
At high temperatures, even the best mineral oils will, in time, react with oxygen from sludge, varnish and acids which attach to some metals. Additives which slow down the oxidation process are used in modern oils to help mitigate the reaction caused by oxidation.
Corrosion Inhibitors
Water and combustion acids form during operation of every engine, most rapidly when it is cold. The corrosive wear and rusting can be prevented only by using inhibitors, which counteract the acids mixing with the oil film on the cylinder walls or with the oil in the crankcase. These inhibitors are graduallyused throughout the life of the oil, so it is important to change your oil to remove the eventual acid buildup.
Foam Inhibitors
Foam within oil is caused by air entrapment caused by churning. As the oil moves through the components, the rapid motion causes foam, which limits the lubricity of the oil. Anti-foam additives are added to the oil to prevent bubble growth and help quickly break up bubbles.
Detergent-Dispersants
Engine oil detergent-dispersants disperse and suspend sludge and varnish forming materials until they can be removed bydraining the oil. The detergents also aid in cleaning the oil as it moves through the engine components.
Anti-wear Additives
Viscosityand natural friction reducing properties of mineral oils maybe insufficient to resist the extreme pressures encountered in modern engines. Therefore, additives are used to form lubricating films strong enough to carry the loads imposed on them.
Viscosity Index Improvers
An oil which resists thinning when hot or thickening when cold has a high “VI” or “ViscosityIndex.” Chemical additives called “VI” improvers are often used to reduce the rate of viscosity change within drastic changing temperatures. When a VI is used, the lubricant is most likely considered a “multi-grade” lubricant and can withstand drastic temperature fluctuations.
Pour Point Depressants
To make an oil that will flow freelyat low-temperatures, refiners either remove wax from the oil or manufacture it from crude oil, which contains little wax. Pour point depressant additives are commonlyused in oils formulated for cold temperatures to keep them fluid at negative degrees.
Additives are generally classified by their use or by their function. Most additives, while often classified by a single use, are multifunctional. Not all additives are complete improvements, since theymayimprove certain performance properties, buttheymay also lower others. Furthermore, some additives maybe antagonistic to others if used in the same oil. A complete additive system is a veryfinelybalanced part of a high-qualitylubricant.
Lubricant Storage
Tamper-proof seals are installed on each filled drum; but these seals are NOT WEATHERPROOF. All lubricants should be stored inside a weatherproof structure with minimized temperature changes. If lubricants are stored in an inconsistent temperature environment, these temperature changes cause excessive “breathing” associated with moisture contamination in drums.
When a lubricant drum is warmed bysunlight or higher daytime temperatures, the fresh oil and air space inside the drum expands and creates enough pressure to force some of the air out through the bungs. Nighttime temperatures allow cooling, the product inside contracts, and a vacuum is created. Humid air, or free water itself, whichever is outside the bung at the time of the vacuum, can be sucked into the drum past the bung seals. The condensation from humidity, settles out to the bottom of the drum and the lubricant becomes “wet.” This process continues as long as the storage conditions do not improve.
If it is impossible to store the drum indoors, the drum should be stored on its side with the bungs parallel to the ground. If it is not possible to store the drum on its side, place a block under one side to tilt the drum and at least keep water away from the bungs. These circumstances will minimize the “breathing” action that may lead to contamination.
