Architecture to me is more than art, the spaces we design as architects will form the corresponding way of life, with its fascinating power to shape thoughts, behaviour and lifestyle. Growing up in Hong Kong, I have been exposed to the city with great emphasis of contemporary architecture, yet, I have also witnessed a city being built on the profit motive. As a consequence of this international experience, I am conscious of responsive design for human needs, wellbeing and sustainability. My architectural study helps me to develop the understanding of architecture from micro- to macro-level. My design thinking and skills on human-centered design approach are strengthened through my second major study in industrial design. These assets are critical and incredibly valuable in my future architectural practice.
I believe architects and designers are gifted, and we have the ability and responsibility to create better lives and a better world.

CONCEPT MAKER - HIDDEN LOCAL TALENT
MAKERS STUDIO & RESIDENCY
The Barn celebrates the local heroes and diversity of talents in the region of Beenleigh. Embracing the beauty of craftsmanship and dignity of making. The true products that deserves the community and global support.
Bringing the concept of living and working in the same place, The Barn includes maker / artist residency as well as retail market and co-workshop. The Barn provides an entirely different shopping experience, which makes shoppers feel like home. Under the same roof, the makers, artisan producers, customers, visitors are here to share their stories and talents.
RETAIL IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO BUY GOODS, BUT RATHER IS A SPACE TO TRANSACT IN CULTURE, EXPERIENCES AND RELATIONSHIPS. THE COMMUNITY Here at The Barn, customers are able to see how the products are crafted and made, embracing honesty, stories and dedication behind each of the products. The building is equipped with a Fabrication Cafe, which provides machines such as a laser cutter to be booked and used by the public to build their own products. Workshops are held at times to learn how to use these machines. Regular exhibitions and events allow users to share their proudly made goods. This is nurturing the next generations of local heroes through a different mode of education. The building opens fully to the street, inviting people and letting the activities spill out, which is important as a way of honouring the community.

THE FORM
A
B
One of the characters of the Beenleigh region is barn vernacular. Barn-form buildings that located in the area include the famous Beenleigh Rum Distillery. The Barn can also be related to the farming history of Beenleigh. Two main forms of the roof that are commonly seen: Gable Roof & Slope Roof / Saw-tooth.
CLERESTORY WIND TURBINE ROOF VENT LARGE OVERHANG SKYLIGHT
PURLINS
BUILDING SYSTEM The use of lightweight and prefabricated panels is a quick to install, energy efficient and lowmaintenance package. It is chosen with consideration on the context of Beenleigh which requires lower cost and maximum value. Also, the building maintained the existing grid on the site and used recycled material from the old building.

Detail - Typical pivot door plan
Detail - Concealed gutter section
The building has a simple and clean exterior, hiding most of its structural elements including the use of a concealed gutter while the inside structure is all exposed. This is to resonate with the concept of making, revealing the scene behind the nicely crafted products and the story behind it.
STEPPING INTO THE BARN, NOT ONLY THE BUILDING STRUCTURE IS REVEALED, BUT ALSO THE MAKING OF THE CRAFTS. IT IS A SENSE OF KNOWING AND HONESTY.

Considerations were made to the site orientation as well as the roof form, taking the site opportunity that the long elevations faces north. With emphasis on the project’s environmental values, building system with clerestory roof that allows daylight penetration and ventilation is chosen. Residency is located on the mezzanine level while the ground floor is publically accessible retail and workshop space. Materials are largely recycled pre-enginnered structure and quick construction, again, taking local values into consideration. The form allows expansive interior space and generous connection with outdoor space as well. In which seize the opportunity connection to the under utilised green land next to the site as well as reactivating the area.

{STORY} MARKETPLACE :: master studio project :: acaemic year 2016 :: community intervention :: CENTENARY PARK BEENLEIGH
The {STORY} initiatives change the ritual of shopping, an architectural form can serve as a centralised hub to let the experience saturate. A structure that embraces the power of the circle and lets others define the space around it. A space that is well designed yet versatile to cater different kind of store and activities. It enables life and cultivates communal experience for the Beenleigh community.
LIFE SPACE
ARCHITECTURE
Intervention - {STORY} - provides experiences beyond a typical store that brings the story to life instore with the larger community. Intervention reimagine stores as marketplaces for relationships and experience. The idea will support my future visions as to create a sustainable, harmonious and unique community hub with economic opportunities.
