MESSAGES
This is an exciting time for the leadership of the Alberta Soccer Association. With our board and staff spending this past year continuing to collaborate and share knowledge with our District members, we are incredibly excited to build on the strengths of this organization and work towards creating a true centre of excellence for the game. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 showcased how passionate our province is towards the beautiful game. Our members attended games in record numbers and we can only hope that our next generation of future soccer stars were inspired by the event by not only choosing to get in the game but to stay in the game. It is a message that repeats itself every year but soccer in Alberta and across Canada is built upon the tireless efforts of volunteers who participate on boards, coach and help organize many of our events and competitions. Thank you to the numerous volunteers across this province that are deeply committed to the betterment of the game. Soccer is about the players on the field. It is a message that continues to remain top of mind when it comes to not only our technical programming but also as it relates to governance. Following Canada Soccer’s restructure of governance in 2012 and the current restructure FIFA is undergoing, Alberta Soccer is continuously working towards aligning our governance model with national and international best practices and standards. We are consistently reviewing and analyzing our policies and bylaws to modernize and ensure alignment with Canada Soccer where applicable.
On the technical side, we continue to work towards our goal of implementing a High Performance League to align with Canada Soccer’s Player Pathway. Despite some setbacks, this remains a key objective for our Technical Department. We have already seen our Regional Performance Centres pay dividends with players being scouted for national team programming, professional club environments and colleges and universities. Within Grassroots Development, we are committed to introducing the Preferred Training Model as recommended by Canada Soccer to communities around the province through our festival format and monetary grants committed by our partners to help deliver. It was a great year to be Albertan within the Canadian soccer community as we watched nine of the Alberta clubs participating in Canada Soccer’s National Club Championships reach the medal rounds. Alberta had the second best medal haul of any province in the country as six of our teams brought home medals. Additionally, the Calgary adult districts, CUSA and CWSA, hosted the Challenge and Jubilee Trophy competitions to accolades from other provinces and the national body. We have once again finished our year as a financially stable organization. This stability was reached without raising fees for our members. We will continue to seek out alternative methods of revenue generation that go beyond member fees to help with soccer maintaining its admired reputation as an affordable and accessible sport. We are proud to be leading a strong organization with passionate members and as we continue to strive towards a common vision, we hope that you will ask questions, share best practices and collaborate to help grow the game to new levels.
We are also in the next cycle of strategic planning. The Association made strides with the introduction of our first ever strategic plan in 2013. It is now time to build off of that initial plan – emphasizing our strengths and improving on our weaknesses. We will maintain the same vision in our 2016-19 Strategic Plan to create “a centre of excellence for the game, providing opportunities for all players to reach their full potential”. COACHING
Alberta Soccer continues to lead the way in the phased implementation of Canada Soccer’s coaching program and alignment with Long-Term Player Development principles. The investment in coach education will continue to be of prime importance for the Association so that players are provided with every opportunity to develop and succeed. Host of Canada Soccer’s Pilot ‘C-License’ Course and National Master Learning Facilitators Training – Alberta Soccer hosted its second Canada Soccer ‘C License’ pilot course in November, 2014 which included hosting the National Master Learning Facilitators training on this course. Alberta then became the first province in Canada to host a fully NCCP compliant ‘C-License’ coaching course. Alberta Soccer continues to see increasing interest in the C License with two courses running in the summer of 2015 and 48 accepted registrants. Modest increase in trained community coaches – Alberta Soccer saw a 3% increase in coaches who were ‘trained’ in community stream NCCP clinics from 2013-14. In total, 84 clinics were held across the province which trained 1,345 coaches.
Provincial B License course hosted in Calgary – 13 participants took part in a Provincial B License course that was held in Edmonton during the first week of July in 2015 with participants receiving the chance to analyze a FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final match. Following course work, participants will have to complete an assessment to gain full certification. Four Women participate in Canada Soccer supported mentorship program – Alberta Soccer in partnership with Canada Soccer placed four women into a mentorship program working towards their Provincial B License. Alberta Provincial team head coaches and Alberta Learning Facilitators helped mentor the female candidates over the winter months prior to a March 2015 assessment. Women now make up 32% of registered coaches in the province

REFEREES
Alberta continues to set the bar for advancing officials to the highest level. In 2015, another Albertan was added to the FIFA list of officials where Albertan officials now make up 3 of the 7 Canadian officials who are currently on the list. The Referee Development Committee has also started to see their efforts related to recruitment pay off. This past year, recruitment of officials increased by a healthy 10%. Drew Fischer added to FIFA List of Officials – In January, 2015, Drew Fischer of Calgary was added to the FIFA List of Officials joining Edmonton’s Dave Gantar and Sheena Dickson. Canada now has seven officials on the list of which there are three Albertans.
and recruitment was up 10%. Improving retention of officials will require a renewed focus as 2014-15 saw 57% retention compared to 65% from the previous year. Providing opportunities for education and development – 194 Referee courses were delivered in 2014-15 to 3,910 students. The Association also offered Entry Level Referee Assessor courses in the spring in Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge. With the value placed on providing development opportunities for Alberta officials, two young referees were invited to participate at the renowned Dallas Cup in March and three officials travelled to Montreal in the summer for the Canada Soccer Provincial Upgrade clinic.
Increases in overall numbers and recruitment – Overall numbers of officials who were registered with Alberta Soccer increased by 4% in 2014-15 from the previous year

Alberta players in National Team Programming
The Canada Soccer Player Pathway (introduced last year) has made it quite clear that players and coaches at all levels of play should have access to appropriate programming and resources to fit their needs. The Alberta Soccer technical department continues to introduce and work on new programs that fit Alberta’s player needs. Provincial Team Program – Winter training commenced in Calgary and Edmonton in October with participation from 171 players residing in 19 different municipalities throughout the province. Regional Trials for Provincial Teams were held in Spruce Grove and Calgary, May 22-24 and Provincial Trials were held in Red Deer and Lacombe, May 30-31. Teams were selected and players from as far North as Fort McMurray and as far South as Lethbridge were included in the squads. Training camps took place in Calgary and Edmonton in the month of July and competitions took place in Vancouver (U13, U14 teams), Dallas (U15 teams) and Fort McMurray (Western Canada Summer Games U16 teams). Regional Performance Centres - The Regional Performance Centres (RPC) in partnership with FC Edmonton located in Edmonton and Calgary completed their first full year of operation in 2014-15. As per the number of
players that have moved on to National Team duty through FC Edmonton/RPC programming or the former NTC program, it is evident that an elevated level of play that pits “best with best against better” is essential in the development of players at the Excel level of play. RPC players took part in a number of events this past year including CSA scouting trips, matches against University teams and matches against MLS academy teams for the boys. Overall the program saw 52 female and 26 male participants who were born between 1999 to 2003. Exposure Camps - Alberta Soccer’s Technical Department offered a new opportunity this year for U14 to U17 players not necessarily enrolled in Alberta Soccer’s Excellence programming to get identified by University, College and Professional Club scouts. Exposure Camps were held in Edmonton and Calgary in July. Overall, 299 players participated from across the province with over 20 scouts in attendance. Danone Nation’s Cup - 52 players selected out of 353 participants took part in an Alberta ID Camp held in May 2015. Four players including Carter Fuerst, Dale Reas-Do, Manssi Kamden and Rian Santos were selected to the Canada West team that lost to Canada East to ultimately represent Canada at the 2015 Danone Nation’s cup.

GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT
In 2015, the Technical Department of Alberta Soccer continued to engage the member districts in our programming outlined in the Strategic Plan. As has been mentioned in previous years the game of soccer is a game that on the field combines among other things artistry, science and imagination regardless of the level of play. Likewise, off the field the sport is evolving rapidly and we are attempting to keep pace with those changes. Players, parents and coaches are demanding more from each and every one of us. The department is adapting to these demands placed upon our members and Alberta Soccer. Mini Stars - the program continues to thrive and is a flagship of player development coaching as opposed to team specialisation. The program has extended to two new centres in Fort St John and Medicine Hat for 2015-16. As the introduction to excellence program for Alberta Soccer, 26 Mini Stars graduates were selected to participate in the 2015 Winter Training Program. District Outreach - the program has again endeavoured to spread its net wide and far to support a diverse number of communities. 82 visits were conducted across 16 different districts reaching 1,175 coaches and parents in addition to 2,863 players.
FUNdamentals Festivals - there were some positive gains to support the promotion of the preferred training model for grassroots. Alberta Soccer launched its first full year of delivering FUNdamentals Festivals and teaching the preferred training model in five different communities. Communities such as Leduc, Red Deer and Medicine Hat who successfully implemented the format received a $2,000 grant. It is hoped that this program will continue its momentum into 2016 to help introduce Canada Soccer’s preferred training model into communities around the province. Soccability and PowerChair Soccer – Alberta Soccer saw the transition of this programming to the Alberta Cerebral Palsy Sports Association in 2015. Alberta Soccer provided funding to this programming in 2014-15 through a Rick Hansen Foundation quality of life grant and will continue to provide coaching and promotional support moving forward. Alberta Soccer will also continue to support the recruitment of para soccer players for Canada’s Para Soccer Team. This past year, Lucas Bruno of Calgary was part of the national team that attended the Parapan Am Games.

In 2015, the Alberta Soccer Association ran 64 competitions including 24 indoor competitions and 40 outdoor competitions. A futsal competition did not take place in 2015 due to the lack of demand for a provincial competition from the districts. Alberta Soccer will continue to evaluate the demand and need for a provincial futsal competition in 2016. Servus Credit Union partnered with us once again to be the Title Sponsor for the Youth Provincial Championships. Local branches were on site at many of our competitions participating in on site activations and participating in medal presentations.

Edmonton District Soccer, Lethbridge Soccer, Calgary United Soccer and Calgary Women’s Soccer stepped up once again to host these competitions and Calgary hosted all of Senior SoccerFest. Following a successful hosting of the Western Masters and Classics Regional Competition in 2014, Alberta Soccer in partnership with Calgary United Soccer Association and Calgary Women’s Soccer Association hosted incredibly successful National Challenge Trophy and Jubilee Trophy competitions at the Calgary Soccer Centre from October 7th to 12th. 12 Men’s teams competed in the Challenge Trophy competition which saw Edmonton Scottish finish in second place and Edmonton Green and Gold finish fourth place. On the women’s side, eight women’s teams participated and Edmonton Victoria battled their way to their third consecutive National Jubilee Trophy. The successful hosting of this competition received accolades from Canada Soccer and other provinces. Canada Soccer’s Western Masters and Classics Regional Championships were held in Vancouver at the end of September. Calgary Callies represented Alberta on the men’s side and brought home a silver medal while Edmonton Green and Gold once again represented on the women’s side and captured a silver medal.

ALBERTA MAJOR SOCCER LEAGUE The Alberta Soccer Association entered its 24th year as the premier adult league in Alberta with 16 teams that took part in the league in 2015. Teams from Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Red Deer each played 14 games between May and August of 2015 with the league championship and ultimately a place at the National Championships in Alberta on the line. On the women’s side, Edmonton Northwest United put in dominant performances throughout the summer to capture the league title with an undefeated record of 10-4-0. The Calgary Villains Elite captured their first ever AMSL title on the men’s side after grabbing 10 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws for a total of 32 points. The league’s contribution to Alberta’s success at Canada Soccer’s National Championships is

historically noted. However, with the emergence of new champions and young stars in the last couple of AMSL seasons, there is clear evidence that the league is giving players the opportunity to compete and train with some of the best players, coaches and officials allowing them to become better players themselves from a younger age. At Canada Soccer’s 2015 National Championships held in Calgary, Edmonton Victoria earned a threepeat as Jubilee Trophy winners while Edmonton Scottish lost in extra time of the gold medal match to take home a silver and Edmonton Green and Gold placed fourth. The league will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2016.

FINANCIALS Alberta Soccer maintained its strong record of financial stability in 2014-15. Our Association returned to reporting a surplus this year after an anomaly in membership reporting last year resulted in a slight deficit. That anomaly was rectified this year and after accounting for this, Alberta Soccer fell within 3% of our year end budget target. This result has shown the strong connection and consistencies between the organization’s planning and implementation processes. Alberta Soccer continues to post the approved budget each year on the Alberta Soccer website showing our commitment to financial transparency with our members and partners. Auditors once again approved a clean audit for 2014-15 with one accounting adjustment (see Appendix B). • •
•
•
Membership fees were not increased for a seventh straight year Spending allocated to administration was reduced for a fourth straight year (16.67% in 2012 to 15.29% in 2013 to 15.19% in 2014 to 14.56% in 2015) Increased investment in direct on-field activities achieved for a fourth straight year. Player development and coach development activities both saw an increase in spending. Increase in revenue for 2014-15 a result of increased membership numbers

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT To the Board of Directors of Alberta Soccer Association We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Alberta Soccer Association, which comprise the statement of financial position as at October 31, 2015, the statements of operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year then ended, and notes, comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors' Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on our judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, we consider internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained in our audit is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
KPMG LLP is a Canadian limited liability partnership and a member firm of the KPMG network of independent member firms affiliated with KPMG International Cooperative (“KPMG International”), a Swiss entity. KPMG Canada provides services to KPMG LLP.

APPENDIX B: AUDIT
ALBERTA SOCCER ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements Year ended October 31, 2015
Nature of operations: Alberta Soccer Association (the "Association") provides the administrative and technical development framework for all soccer programs within the Province of Alberta. The Association, incorporated under the provisions of the Societies Act of Alberta, is a non-profit organization within the meaning of the Income Tax Act (Canada) and is exempt from income taxes.
1.
Significant accounting policies: The Association prepares its financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations which is Part III of the CPA Canada Handbook Accounting. The Association's significant accounting policies are as follows: (a) Use of estimates: The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenue and expenses during the year. Actual results could differ from those estimates. (b) Cash: Cash consists of cash on hand and amounts on deposit in demand-type accounts less cheques issued and outstanding. Cash includes amounts on deposit in demand-type accounts arising from specific fundraising activities which may be subject to restriction. (c) Inventories: Inventories distributed for no or nominal value or consumed in the delivery of services are stated at the lower of cost and net replacement cost. Inventory held for sale is stated at the lower of average weighted cost and net realizable value.
5
APPENDIX B: AUDIT
ALBERTA SOCCER ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements (continued) Year ended October 31, 2015
1.
Significant accounting policies (continued): (d) Property and equipment: Property and equipment are stated at cost and donated assets are recognized at fair value. Amortization is provided using the straight-line method and following annual rates:
Asset
Rate
Office equipment Technical equipment Computer equipment Leasehold improvements
20% 20% 33% Lease term
(e) Revenue recognition: The Association follows the deferral method of accounting for revenue. Fees are recognized as revenue in the year for which services are provided. Fees received in advance are recorded as deferred revenue. Restricted contributions received in the year that relate to future expenditures are recorded as deferred revenue. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue when received. Revenue from the sale of inventory is recognized when the product is delivered and collection is reasonable assured. Contributions for the acquisition of property and equipment and donated property and equipment are recorded as unamortized capital contributions and recognized to income on the same basis as the amortization of the assets for which the contributions were received. Excess revenue (expenditure) reported in the statement of changes in net assets for investment in property and equipment are the net amount of depreciation and revenue attributable to property and equipment and represent a transfer of unrestricted net assets. Interest income is recorded on a time proportion basis. Interest income earned on restricted contributions that are similarly restricted by the contributor is recorded as deferred revenue on a time proportion basis until the eligible expenditures have been incurred at which time the interest is recognized as revenue. (f)
Contributed services: The work of the Association is dependent on the voluntary services of many members. Due to the difficulty of determining fair value of these services, contributed services are not recognized in the financial statement. The Association may receive distributable materials for distribution to member organizations. The Association does not recognize the revenue or related expense for these materials.

Commitments: The Association has a lease for rental of premises ending February 28, 2017. Future minimum lease payments under this lease are set out as follows:
2016 2017
$
42,644 14,000
The Association is also responsible for its share of occupancy cost and realty taxes associated with the premises.
10. Financial instrument risks and concentration of risk: The Association’s financial instruments consist of cash, term deposits, accounts receivable and accounts payable and accrued liabilities. The Association's operations are concentrated to Alberta and all banking is concentrated to one large, federally registered and insured financial institution. The Association’s accounts receivable are primarily comprised of amounts due from various local soccer districts and associations and collegiate associations in Alberta with some funds due from the national governing body. The exposure to credit risk is limited to the amounts receivable for which local soccer districts and associations are required to be in good standing to participate in the Association, other strategic partners such as collegiate associations and others. When there are doubts concerning collection, the amounts are writtenoff or an allowance is provided by the Board who reviews what actions, if any, they may take against the local districts and associations or other debtor. The credit risk exposure in the current year is unchanged from the prior year. Substantially all of the Association’s operations are transacted in Canadian currency, accordingly foreign currency risk is not considered significant. The nature of investments is limited to interest bearing bank issued deposits and interest rate risk is not considered significant to the operations of the Association.
