Bios Lorraine Lafrenière – Keynote Speaker Lorraine is a strategic thinker with excellent people skills and an enthusiastic approach to challenges who has played a leadership role in the sport community for many years. Her passion for sport goes back decades to when she saw the incredibly powerful role athletes play in inspiring younger generations to stay active and healthy while making a contribution to society. She began her sport career with the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association 25 years ago before moving to the Canadian Olympic Committee in 1989. During her tenure as the COC’s Media Relations Manager, she held several leadership positions with the mission staff at numerous Olympic Games, Pan American Games, and World Championships. In 2002 she was appointed Chief Operating Officer for the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), a position she held for four years -- playing a key role in establishing sponsorship programs and strengthening the organization’s relationships with the provinces/territories and federal government. Following the CAC, she went on to head the Canadian Cycling Association where she restructured the organization and instilled financial stability. In 2009, she was hired as Director General of CanoeKayak Canada where she was instrumental in creating the teams and environment which led to CanoeKayak’s three-medal performance at the 2012 Olympic Game. In total, she has participated in 9 Olympic Games, both summer and winter. Lorraine also has a strong volunteer commitment having sat on the boards and committees of many organizations, including the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, Canadian Cancer Society (Ottawa-Carleton), Run for the Cure, Big Sisters of Ottawa, and Ottawa-Carleton Epilepsy. She was also the co-chair of the 2004 Ontario Summer Games held in Ottawa. Lorraine became the Chief Executive Officer of the CAC in December 2013.
Monica Adam During a season off from soccer, due to a skiing mishap resulting in a knee injury in February 2007, I decided that since I had already been a fan, coach and player of this beautiful game, I though that perhaps I should learn the Laws of the Game. So started my reffing career. Being a stickler for rules and order, being a ref is right up my alley. I ref in multiple leagues, am an ASA Referee Instructor and an ASA Assessor. In 2007, I was one of a handful of female officials in Edmonton. I am happy to say that I now share company with dozens of females that have taken up the whistle to participate in the game. What needs to continue is the recruitment of and support for female officials. Being an official is tough (for both genders) but a layer of complexity is added if your genetic make up is one of XX. Women need to applaud and cheer each other in which ever facet of participation of soccer we chose.

Laurie Darvill Laurie is a Regional level referee in Alberta. She began her career in an effort to “put her money where her mouth was” - instead of complaining about the quality of officiating she was experiencing, contribute to improving it by becoming a referee. She became a Referee Instructor in 2014 and a District Level Assessor in 2012 and was promoted to a Regional Level Assessor in 2015. She notes that being an official is a great opportunity to develop tools and skills that transcend to all aspects in our lives. She likes the mental and physical challenges that officiating brings and being able to provide the best possible officiating to each match and continuing to develop as an official. Laurie also enjoys the opportunity to share her experiences on the field with new officials and assist them with their development. She tells new officials, “If you ever think you’ve seen it all then it’s time to leave officiating. Even after 20 years I still see things happen on the field for the first time!”
Sheena Dickson Sheena began refereeing in Alberta in 2004 and was named to the list of FIFA referees in 2013. She believes that her “blood, sweat, and even some tears” made it possible for her to reach the National and International referee stages. But, she says, “when you reach your goal, it is all worthwhile.” In 2014, Sheena was awarded the Woman of Distinction aware from the Alberta Soccer Association.

Bev Preistman Bev has been the Director of the Canada Soccer’s Women’s Excel Program (U-14/U-17) since 2013. She is passionate about getting more women involved at all levels of the game by working to create a clear pathway and ensuring there are strong female role models to encourage more females to have the confidence to get involved and challenge themselves to reach their full potential “My job, as a coach, is to give my players self-belief. The coaching team’s mantra is that these girls have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. That means getting them out of their comfort zones and doing things that they haven’t done before. So I have to create an environment where it’s okay to try new things. It’s not about performing, but about learning. It’s about creating a safe environment, while instilling enough passion and desire to keep them working hard.
Michelle Pye Michelle began her journey as a referee in Kamloops at 19 years-old and in 2007, she achieved her International badge from FIFA. In 2015, Michelle was selected to officiate at the Women’s World Cup - describing the experience as, “the epitome of my goal, of all these hundreds of hours that I’ve spent, and all the sacrifices that my family makes for me to be able to do this.”
