Wednesday: Roots and Boots Tour
Three ’90s country artists all with hits of their own team up with a full band to bring the Roots and Boots Tour to life. Sammy Kershaw, with three platinum albums in his list of 16 albums and a 2010 induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, is known for No. 1 hits “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” and “Love of My Life.” He is joined by Country Music Awards and Academy of Country Music 10-time male vocalist of the year nominee Collin Raye, who is known for ’90s Billboard No. 1 hits “Love Me,” “In This Life,” “My Kind of Girl” and “I Can Still Feel You,” among others. Aaron Tippin finishes off the trio with genre favorites “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong with the Radio,” “That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You” and “Kiss This,” along with his own history of gold and platinum certifications spread among his several studio albums.
Thursday: Hairball
Thursday night fairgoers are promised a smorgasbord of characters, pyrotechnics, lights, props, surprises and recreations of the ’80s arena acts whose music never left the radio. With KISS, Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, Van Halen and Aerosmith in its wheelhouse, Hairball’s stage constantly transforms itself into a new concert experience, according to a press release. Prepare for more than two hours of a trip down ’80s memory lane.

GRANDSTAND REMODELING COMPLETED By Jerome Meyer
news@albertleatribune.com
The “Six Best Days of Summer” — referring to this year’s 136th annual Freeborn County Fair — are about to get even better. What’s better is the new look resulting from the two-year, $423,000 remodeling and improvement project for the county fair Grandstand that was completed this summer. Phase one was completed in 2018 with the concrete reinforcement under the bleacher section. The assessment was done by using radar technology to penetrate all the concrete structures of the Grandstand to find and fix any defects needed to be repaired. Phase two was completed this spring with the removal of all the old wooden bleacher seats, repairing any surface cracks or holes in the concrete and cleaning and sealing the complete exterior surface, which is about 210 feet long and 100 feet deep. Finally, all new aluminum bleacher seats were installed in time for this year’s county fair, along with the much-needed new hand railings. The total seating capacity will be for about
4,700 people. Also, the 12,600 square foot exhibit space under the Grandstand for house and commercial exhibits will be open for this year’s fair after it was closed the past two years for construction. The funds for the Grandstand construction and improvement project came from the capital improvement money funded by the local Freeborn County wind towers. Historically, the Freeborn County Fair is known for its large and spacious Grandstand and the many attractions over the years. Probably the most attended attractions were the musical presentations by popular country bands and singers. Other attractions in past years consisted of motorcycle races, stock car races, auto thrill shows, horse races, wrestling events, mule races and tractor pulls. Past newspaper articles show that the construction of the Grandstand started in 1938 and was completed just in time for the 1940 county fair. What’s unique about grandstand is that it was partially funded by U.S government funds through the Works Progress Administration — project No. 4-2456. The WPA was a national works program that provided jobs for 3

It provided jobs for family income during the Great Depression, hoping to alleviate the effects of the depression. Most projects through the WPA were funded from 10 to 30% of the cost. It’s
not known what percentage was given for the construction of this county fair Grandstand. A professional assessment of the Grandstand will be done every three to five years in hopes of continuing its life while preserving the safety of the facility.
