FLYING WINGS AIRPORT
Airport terminal design and rethink mainly focus for budget airlines
Individual Work
Location: Tropveien Sandefjord Oslo Norway
Building Height:35M , Area: 25800 square meters
Time: 2022 Fall
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.
– Leonardo da Vinci
The site chosen for this design is in Oslo, Norway, where there is a small airport dedicated to budget airlines.I think budget airlines are a very good idea and various figures show that they have higher profit margins than many of the major airlines, but at the same time budget airlines have been losing customers over the years and in order to control costs, budget airline terminals often have simplified facilities such as a small number of flight check-in counters and a lack of duty-free shops and lounges. Because of their cheaper fares, budget airlines often attract large numbers of passengers, resulting in more crowded waiting areas in the terminal where passengers may have to stand or have trouble finding a seat while waiting to board. In order to control costs, low-cost airline terminals often cut back on the number of staff and quality of service, such as a small number of security staff, customer service staff and gate staff, which may make it difficult for passengers to receive timely assistance when they encounter problems. So I think that since budget airlines are so profitable, the budget airline terminal experience needs to become better to make it more competitive, so we need to revamp and redesign the terminal to bring it up to modern facilities and space experience.

Site Analysis
The arrangement of terminal buildings can be roughly categorized into the following types, namely, single terminal, corridor terminal, parallel terminal and satellite terminal. In comparison, the number of aircraft that can be accepted in a single terminal is relatively small, but the number of aircraft parking can also be increased by adding corridors. Also parallelrow terminals and satellite terminals require transportation via bridges, internal rail transit or shuttle buses. To improve the efficiency of transportation, the construction of bridges and rail transportation can better improve the efficiency of transportation.
In this site, the airport does not require much transportation, so a single terminal is a better choice.
There are also two ways to summarize the aircraft parking: the direct entry type that requires a trailer to be pushed out and the one that can taxi out of the aircraft space by itself. The one that needs to be pushed back requires ground staff to help operate the aircraft, so manual involvement in the process. However, this process will inevitably encounter the problem of insufficient manpower thus leading to delayed flights. However, this type of stop is more space efficient and the number of slots is greater. On the contrary, the number of slide-out slots saves manpower and is thus more efficient, but the space utilization of the slots is lower. Therefore, I think we can use direct-entry slots to increase space utilization, but we can use machines to replace the manual labor on the ground to increase efficiency.
Terminal Layout
Parking Layout
FLYING WINGS 7
In the case of airports or terminals, it is often worthwhile to understand the environment surrounding the building, as the terminal often serves not only the people who live nearby, but also people from far away, and the area involved in the descent of the aircraft can be considered as an extension of the site, so I have analysed the vast area surrounding the site and I have found several characteristics. The first is the abundance of forest resources around the site, which is related to the fact that the country where the site is located is relatively well protected and developed, so I felt that the forest resources could be a major source of inspiration for this design, in order to express the respect of the building for the site. The second point is the surrounding population, the site is located in a relatively low density area compared to large cities and a large airport needs to avoid too much impact on the town. The last point is the analysis of the unique Norwegian coastline, which is a unique fjord landscape formed by glacial action, and the more fragmented form of the fjord could be one of the inspirations for the design. In summary, I hope that the design can start from the site and return to the site itself, echoing some of the original features of the site and making people resonate with the site.

WINGS AIRPORT 8
Human Heat Oceanspace
There are two main considerations in the design of the terminal, as the site is surrounded on many sides by forest and agricultural land with relatively low population density. The first is the response of the terminal to its natural surroundings. As I mentioned earlier, I believe that the natural geography of the site where the building is located is very unique, so I wanted to design the building from this point of view in such a way that it is a response to the site, and I believe that it is also a respect for the site. The second aspect is from a functional point of view, as the current site is only accessible by road in one direction and there is a need to fully consider public transport and parking issues. There is also a need to consider local residents and minimise disruption to their lives, given that there is an aviation school within the current airport. The whole design will therefore be deepened in these two general directions.

First of all, to maximize the use of space, the aircraft will approach the terminal building from these directions.

Massive forest area conduct my design
The shape of the terminal building was also influenced by the shape of the many surrounding forests
Adjust the height of building parts according to the functional distribution.
9 FLYING WINGS
Refine the shape of the segmented roof to allow for better light and ventilation in the room.
Master Plan
The design aspects of the master plan that I would like to highlight are as follows. Firstly, there is more space for aircraft parking than in the current terminal, and the use of the boarding corridor increases the efficiency of airport operations. Secondly, because the shape of the airport is based on the natural environment, I think it is more in tune with the environment and more in tune with the site.
I divided the roads around the building into three parts, the one closest to the airport terminal is the curved lane where taxis and people picking up and dropping off passengers can enter and leave the airport more fluidly; the second part is the public transport station, a function that still exists but has been redesigned with greenery to make it easier for passengers to find the car of their choice. Finally, there is the car park, which is further away and will have a larger car park than an airport of the same size. This is because the airport mainly serves low-cost airlines and therefore has a very high demand for car parking.
10 WINGS AIRPORT
11 FLYING WINGS
Ground Floor Plan
The functional structure of the building is generally single storey, with a partial two-storey structure in the centre of the building, which is designed to rationalise the internal flow of the terminal without wasting too much space. Rationalising the internal circulation is important because one of the main problems with the current terminal is that the internal circulation is congested and interlocked, which can reduce the efficiency of the terminal. As shown on the first floor plan, I have reorganised the internal functions. The light areas on the first floor are all passenger areas, where passengers enter the concourse through the entrance and immediately reach the check-in and check-out areas. The rest of the terminal is the baggage claim area for arriving passengers, so both arriving and departing passengers will gather in the lobby; the darker colour is the commercial arrangement on the first floor, as mentioned earlier the lack of commercial in low cost airline terminals, so this is where that deficiency is filled; the darkest area is the office area, the first floor is large and the main office area where staff can be reached and not interfere with the flow of passengers; the dark area is the office area.
12 WINGS AIRPORT
Axonometric diagram
The exploded view shows the internal flow and functional layout of the terminal more clearly. Since I have already presented the general layout of the first floor, we will focus on the space on the first floor. In view of the delays that often accompany the operation of lowcost airlines, there are many food and beverage areas in the airport, in addition to shopping. For the internal supporting materials, I've taken inspiration from the surrounding site, using a large amount of environmentally friendly low-carbon wood as the main material to achieve sustainable development, while highlighting the characteristics of the site that supports the building.
13 FLYING WINGS
Second Floor Plan 14 WINGS AIRPORT
The sectional view further illustrates the functional division and distribution of the building, and more clearly shows the different parts of the two-storey and one-storey building. It also illustrates the design concept of the eco-building, which I will explain in turn. The roofs are designed to reflect excess heat and provide adequate insulation in winter; the gaps between the roofs provide sufficient light and reduce the pressure on energy consumption; the relatively open interior environment improves the efficiency of indoor ventilation compared to the current closed design of the various functional areas of the airport;
15 FLYING WINGS
Detail Drawing
the rainwater collection pipes on the roofs collect rainwater into a cistern underneath the building, where excess rainwater can enter the purification system and be reused for the airport. In summer, the temperature inside the pipes increases and water vapour condenses on the pipes, cooling the façade, and in winter the same principle is used to prevent the façade from freezing. It is also hoped that the use of Norway's unique geothermal resources will provide a comfortable indoor temperature during the winter months. Details of this can be found in the section and in the detailed drawings.

Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.
– Mary Kay Ash
In today's increasingly competitive society, especially in Singapore where land is at a premium, young students often do not have a good choice of accommodation when they first enter the society. Even though HDB flats are already available in Singapore, it is still difficult to provide young people with apartments that have both quality of living and socialization. At the same time, many young people enter society working for others, and many of their innovative ideas are buried by the system of large companies, but there is not enough security to start a business, not to mention paying rent.
But what if there is a possibility to provide young people with quality housing, and at the same time provide enough social space in a relatively inexpensive way. At the same time, it could also provide young people with space for their startups, and finally make a profit by selling the products that young people start. I think this is a very good and sustainable economic model, which can also provide more space for young people to express their creativity.

Site Analysis
Young graduates, just entering the society, do not have enough money to buy a home, while choosing HDB flats in Singapore lacks quality of living,.And young people also lack a sum of money to start a business, so at this moment they need a platform to incubate their dreams and give them a home at the same time.
So in this design, my goal is to be able to provide a space for young people to start from, but also to provide them with a resting place, to give them a sense of home, to allow them to socialize together, to realize their dreams.
So that young people no longer feel that the modern metropolis does not belong to them, because they are the future masters of the city. I think it is important to provide young people with the greatest freedom so that they can make their own way.
The site analysis mainly expresses that there are many similar HDB buildings around the site, which have a very harmonious community atmosphere, and the site is also very conveniently located for transportation, and the site is also well-lit because it is in Singapore. At the same time, my vision is to provide a suitable habitat for young graduates who are unable to find affordable quality housing after graduation, and at the same time want to start their own companies to utilize their talents. To help them socialize and realize their dreams.
YOUTH APARTMENT 19
Volume Generation
I want take full advantage of the site but still need to exit boundary according to local law
And I will create a step terraces along the form so will have space for the roof garden.
And I will elevate or lower the form according to the building height around the site.
And for I will create a main entry at the lower side of the building to connect the courtyard.
After that we will create a courtyard inside the building for the market area.
APARTMENT 20
And at the end I will remove the small part at the top in order to make roof garden larger.
This is a residential plan of the shared flats, the facade facing the road is occupied by the larger units, the one facing the internal courtyard consists of the smaller units and the larger units, which will accommodate more than two people, have larger balconies and better privacy. The smaller units have more social properties with balconies to help young singletons to socialise better. At the end of the corridors of the flats there are gardens on each floor which provide more communal and social spaces for the residents.
YOUTH APARTMENT 21
Master Plan
The design of the shared youth apartment has three basic functional attributes: basic housing, business incubation, and retail. In addition to these, there will be fitness and social attributes. Let me introduce these functions, how they are linked together, and how they can be operated.
The first is the residential function, which is divided into two types of units. Smaller units designed for young people who are just starting out in society are the majority, and the layout of these units is more compact. Such a layout ensures a certain building density and allows for relatively low rental prices. The larger household type is multifunctional. It can be an option for young people as they prepare to move on to the next stage of their lives, or it can be the initial cradle for a start-up company. In the case of youth who want to move to the next stage of their lives, they may be planning to get married or even have a child, so the number of people in the family will proliferate, and at the same time, their parents may visit their apartment at any time, so this household type has two bedrooms, allowing each occupant to have their own space; in the other case, they may not be able to afford an office space, but Even so, it doesn't matter because many companies in the world don't start in an office, so this gives young people a great platform to get started. The movable walls in the interior allow for flexible division of living and office space, giving young people room to set sail with their dreams.
The other functions in the apartment, the incubation of startups are mainly concentrated on the first and second floors of the apartment, where there is a wide office space, and the office space here is a relatively larger and more formal office space compared to the previous one, which is a place for the development of young people's companies that have already taken shape, where people can use their creativity to change the world. In order to have a good market for the products created by these young people, the atrium of the building is designed to provide a market space where young people can communicate and, more importantly, open up a market for young people that will not stop for lack of sales. Hopefully, it will be possible to use the profits gained by young people's entrepreneurship to support the running of their communities with their creativity and to exchange their labour for their own good life.

First Floor Plan APARTMENT 24
The building is divided into several main divisions, from the ground floor upwards are the office area near the ground level, and the commercial bazaar in the atrium. This is a place where young minds can run fast and make their ideas a reality. The upper floors are used as residential floors, and each residential floor is equipped with a common area that belongs to that floor, and each floor has an activity space to help the youth group to socialize together.
YOUTH APARTMENT 25
Detail Drawing
The design of the roof garden in the middle of the residential level is very much in line with the requirements of Singaporean homes. Because the air is relatively hot and humid in a tropical rainforest climate, Singaporean homes are often planted with lots of greenery to increase transpiration, which carries away heat and provides shade for the roof deck. The roof terrace is the second and largest place I designed for socializing, where people can play outdoor sports, barbecue, and enjoy life more.

The design of a restaurant should embrace the identity of the chef, the nature of the cuisine, and the context of the restaurant itself.
——David Rockwell
Restaurants are places that people often come into contact with in life, so buildings that carry the function of restaurants are very common in life, and nowadays restaurants are no longer single in form as before, but have developed in various forms, from fast food restaurants designed for a fast-paced life to high-end restaurants prepared for a pleasure.
In this case, the site is in the center of Hangzhou, China, next to the bustling commercial center and the symbol of the city, West Lake. In the middle of the city center and the natural lake is a beautiful park, filled with high-end restaurants attracted by the beautiful scenery and central location, where the elite of society enjoy endless luxury. And this project is designed on that basis.
The project is designed to provide the highest level of restaurant service in the heart of the city, in a location that is an urban treasure, with the hope that customers will enjoy a paradisiacal dining experience in the heart of the city, experiencing nature in its truest form, and experiencing the special experience of the combination of restaurant and nature.
30
West:Rafting in the lake
There are many historical monuments in the West Lake, and tourists often take a boat tour in the lake, and there are also many lotus flowers planted in the West Lake, so rafting in the lake to enjoy the lotus flowers is also a frequent experience for tourists.
South:Small square in the park
The site extends towards the city are many parks and green spaces that provide rest and relaxation for people on weekdays. The parks are often gathering places for people, and the interior often has a thriving economy of small goods, making it one of the places for customers who come to the restaurant to relax after their meals.
North:Waterfront Park
The site is surrounded by a waterfront walkway and green space. The waterfront trail gives people the opportunity to get close to the water and brings an open view. Listening to the sound of the water and enjoying the warmth of the sun at the lake is a very pleasant thing to do in spring and summer, and it is indispensable to have such an environment around the restaurant.
East:Urban Business District
West Lake is very close to the city, so that the east side of the site walking a short distance to the most prosperous commercial street in Hangzhou, where there are the most prosperous streets in Hangzhou, with the song and dance of the bustling city, but it is so close to the city, there is such a quiet lake, with a relaxed park, always in this reveals a busy and relaxed.

There is an old Chinese saying that people's food is the sky, and food is one of the most indispensable things in people's life. My design theme for this project is a restaurant located in my hometown Hangzhou, and I hope to interpret the image of high-end dining in my mind through the design of this project.
The building's ecological ramp facing the lake provides the best view for diners, and the ramp is filled with green vegetation to ensure the best outdoor environment for the restaurant.
Hangzhou is a city in southern China, close to Shanghai, the largest economic town in China and the capital of Zhejiang Province, with a very long history as the capital of the country during the Southern Song Dynasty. West Lake, a naturally formed lake, was formed in ancient times as a result of volcanic and crustal movements, and the fresh water formed in the lake natural ly nurtured life here, which is the reason why the city was established here. There are many legends surrounding the West Lake and many histories into the precipitation. Many poets in Chinese history have lived here, and naturally, there are many poems and songs surrounding the West Lake. This also makes the city full of human books and fragrance. Therefore, the importance of West Lake to the city cannot be overemphasized. The site of this design is located on the shore of the West Lake, which is a unique location. In the vicinity of the site are parks and viewpoints. In such a downtown location, I wanted to make an incredible luxury restaurant. I hope that at such a junction of city and nature will collide with a different result.

In the face of the possible noise generated by the city around the site, the restaurant in the site is provided with a paradisiacal experience as much as possible by designing a forested vegetation area at the junction of the site and the surrounding land to block the noise brought by the city and provide the most privacy for the restaurant in the site.
Facing the direction of the lake, extending to the lake to become a waterfront platform, there is a dining area on the waterfront platform, you can feel the atmosphere of the lake more closely on the waterfront platform.
Enter the venue first into a winding path, so that customers first wash off the hustle and bustle of the city in the path first quiet, better able to enjoy the natural dining atmosphere.
33 LAKE MEMORY
The main building is divided into two parts, the larger part is the main building which mainly provides dining service, and the building near the West Lake is a building consisting of a cafe and a tea room, the space atmosphere is relatively relaxed so it is closer to the West Lake to enjoy a better view, and therefore this building is smaller in size. In the middle of the two buildings is an atrium with a direct view of the West Lake, and people can choose various directions to reach the lake after entering the atrium from the entrance.
Render view from south side of the lake
34 MEMORY
In the perspective view, the functional and structural composition of the building becomes clearer, with the dining hall of the restaurant located near the entrance, on the south side of the building. The dining hall is located on the first floor, which also has a kitchen processing area with a glass wall that allows people dining in the hall to see the chef processing the food.
On the second floor are the private dining rooms, which are divided into smaller boom boxes and the most luxurious large private rooms. The smaller rooms can accommodate about 4-6 people and are relatively private, while the main part of the building on the second floor is the large private dining room, which has one of the best views and ensures the best experience for the customers dining here.
Outdoor Dining Area
35 LAKE MEMORY
The most important feature of the restaurant is the large number of outdoor dining areas, including a dining area near the lake, a rooftop dining area, a dining area near the forest, and a characteristic indoor dining area, providing a variety of dining space options. I also wanted to open up the indoor and outdoor areas, so that the transition between the outdoor and indoor areas would be seamless.
In addition to the dining area, the restaurant has also designed a large number of outdoor activity areas, mainly two ramps facing the lake, which will bring the view of the lake into the restaurant and will allow for a green roof design, which I believe will be a natural activity area with a good experience.
Roof Garden Area
36 MEMORY
One of the more distinctive features of the previously mentioned second floor dining area are the booths on the dining hall. These booths are suspended below the roof using metal rods and are presented at different heights, and they are connected by a corridor. The structure of the booths is also distinctive in that the interior of the booths is made of a translucent curtain wall made of woolen glass, ensuring light conditions inside and creating the ancient Chinese style of using oil paper as windows. On the outside of the glass curtain wall are columns made of bamboo, which surround the round room in a circle to carry the weight of the top of the box.
The space below the booths is the dining hall on the ground level. In order to keep the two spaces from interfering with each other and to reflect the natural ecological nature of the restaurant, a wooden organic form of rattan frame is set up between the two levels, which is organized in the way shown in the detail on the top left, with three different wooden strips bent and fixed together with steel nails. The main purpose of this design is to functionally separate the two dining spaces so that they do not interfere with each other, and secondly, we hope to use more architectural structures with Chinese characteristics, such as the rattan frame, which is very common in the southern part of China's Zhejiang Province and is a symbol of local culture.

Section Detail
Between the small box and the luxury box, I designed some buffer areas, these buffer areas are mainly composed of active resting space, at the same time, this is also the main channel for the two types of boxes to enter, the host of the banquet can receive guests here, but also can be a space for children to play after dinner, so the function of this space is relatively diversified. At the two ends of this space are the entrance and exit of the outdoor terrace on the second floor and the revolving staircase leading to the third or first floor.
The main structure of this revolving staircase is there, composed of thick glass, and in the center of the revolving staircase is a hollow structure in which green plants grow and also bring green plants into the interior of the restaurant.
38 MEMORY
The other end is the entrance and exit of the second floor outdoor dining platform, which has an outdoor dining area and a direct view of West Lake. This platform also connects to the tea room on the west side, allowing a seamless transition between dining and after-dinner dessert, and the tea room also has its own small outdoor platform to get closer to the West Lake. It is hoped that this functional design will allow sufficient privacy between the brother functions and at the same time have a smooth flow of communication between them.
It is worth noting that in order to better serve the customers on the second floor, and to avoid the flow of food serving in the kitchen will affect the customer's experience, an elevator is set up inside the kitchen to transport the food to the second floor, and the second floor also corresponds to the space with staff service, which is only responsible for receiving the processed dishes from the first floor and presenting them to the customers, and this elevator The elevator leads to the compartment under the ramp on the top floor, which is the storage room of the kitchen. The space that is not high enough is set as storage space, which is more conducive to the use of space.
39 LAKE MEMORY
Also noteworthy in this section is the ultra-luxurious private room at the end of the building, which is at the end of the building and has the best view of the whole building, and is divided into two levels in consideration of its super-sized scale. The second floor is a separate dining area, ensuring absolute privacy, with a piano at the dining table to cultivate the mood. The large private room also comes with its own terrace, which also looks out to West Lake, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of West Lake from a distance. At the same time, the main body of the building is equipped with a double-layer curtain wall structure system, the internal curtain wall is a normal smooth curtain wall, which is easier to use for the internal space; the external side is a curtain wall composed of an array of glass pieces rotated at an angle, which I think can better isolate the sunlight from heating the interior, and also can use the reflection to enhance the internal privacy, and also can use the gap between the external curtain wall glass to create air circulation. I hope that this will minimize the energy consumption of the building. Ultimately, the main target users of this design are the social elite living in the city, so that they can find a place to relax and gather in the heart of the city, using this restaurant as a vehicle to provide the highest quality of service, serving a specific group of people has become the focus of the project, and I have benefited greatly from this.

Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life.
——Sidney Sheldon
With today's increasingly fast-paced society and the rapid development of self-publishing, the use of books in Chinese society has been greatly reduced, and even many schools have started to use electronic textbooks for teaching purposes. Even many schools have started to use electronic textbooks for teaching. Books are becoming less and less of a part of society. The library is no longer just a serious place for reading, it needs to have more functions to adapt to the current information age, and this library design is a new attempt in library design.
