April 2019, Graduation Project Concepcion, Chile 10000 Mq Paola Pleba

During my period of Erasmus exchange in CONCEPCION, Chile, I had a very positive impression of the city. Its urban conformation, the diversity of architectural styles and the chaotic streets make it a typical South American city. The only place that ruins the liveliness and the positive frenzy is the CENTRAL MARKET. The market was, until ten years ago, the hub of the city. Its destruction by an arson fire turned it into a void that, even today, is a missing piece in the urban fabric of Concepcion.

Impressed and moved by its story and what it represented for the citizens, I decided to make it my thesis project. The thesis path started in Chile, at the University of Desarollo, where they gave me the opportunity to analyze and explore the themes concerning the city. Later I completed the project in Italy, at the Politecnico di Milano. In the initial phase, I studied the political, economic, territorial and social evolutions of the city. This study showed that Architects belonging to the MODERN MOVEMENT, including Le Corbusier, experimented with concepts such as utopian cities, experimental buildings and with new architectural engineering techniques. The second phase did involve what we could call “reading the place”. Concepcion was built designing equidistant square blocks, called MANZANA. The order and rigor of the plan seem to be subverted if you go down to the scale of the building. The HISTORICAL CENTRE, in particular, is saturated with buildings. The SEISMIC EVENTS that hit the city over the years have produced a continuous STRATIFICATION and uncontrolled SELF-CONSTRUCTION. The third phase takes place with the experimentation of the DESIGN CONCEPT. Which must allow both the survival of the FUNCTIONAL MIXITÈ of the place and the conservation of the manzana. The coexistence of both these ideas being the essence of the design concept. Picture 1 - Architectural model project

Concepcion is a city that hosts a wide variety of ARTISTS and STUDENTS from all over the world. In the city there are about 50 HOUSES OCCUPIED by artists who work during the week, developing ideas, creating, painting, sculpting and who open their ateliers to the public during the weekends to show and share their work. During my stay I often visited those workshops and got in quite close contact with this ECLECTIC and somewhat NAIVE bohemian environment, which is why I decided to develop a space dedicated to this world. In addition to a large artist’s residence and a commercial area on the ground floor, a cultural centre was created. The project of the CULTURAL CENTER is characterized by elements that create the space according to a hierarchy of PUBLIC and SEMI-PUBLIC environments.

The volume of the library and of the exhibition hall has a central divide that becomes an element of CONNECTION between the two FUNCTIONS. The stairs, as you can see in the section, represent the community and its connection with the city.

RIVERSCAPE UNIVERSITY A project for an University Campus in Genoa Date: Location: Surface: Advisor:

July, 2017 Genoa, Italy 100000 Mq Arch. M. Bozzola, Arch. E. Ezechieli

The workshop has as its theme the construction of a new University Campus in Genoa, in particular in the former Officine del Gas delle Gavette area in the context of the Bisagno Valley.

Academic Project

26

The path covered is divided into three phases: 1 DELINEATION of an urban strategy in the morphological settlement components (supported by a study of the reference context and the related analyzes on a territorial scale). 2 Drafting of the Masterplan with the formalization of the project buildings and their PROGRAMS and FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION. 3 Architectural developments. As regards the architectural composition, a part of the campus was developed on a 1: 200 scale both in plan and in section. For the design of the LANDSCAPE DETAILS were made up to the 1:20 scale to highlight the relationship between the user - open space, open space-built space and in some to highlight the stratigraphies that allow the drainage functions needed .

Picture 1 - Strategy Proposal The settlement principle of the university project is born through the strategic map.

27

CONCEPTUAL SCHEMES The long and narrow volumes of the university campus become the element of RECONNECTION of the two urban centers that were separated by the large central void left by the former “Officine del gas. The volumes are defined by AXES and ALIGNMENTS dictated by the natural and artificial elements of the surroundings so that the vineyards behind the project area, the villages and the connecting bridges become an integral part of the project. The functionional system is organized according to departments and classrooms. the public sphere occupies the heart of the masterplan , where all flows are conveyed.

MASTERPLAN The aim of the masterplan is to reconnect the central void of the Gavette area with the two small urban centers, but also to re-enact the romantic/historical image of the Genoa gardens and of the ancient railway that today is the only public entrance to the campus.

THE CENTRAL BUILDING, the most representative of the entire complex, includes the canteen, the library and a commercial space. The volume is indipendent, so as to create a public space in the middle, that

represents the CENTRAL SQUARE, on which the entrances to the library and the students residences overlook. THE SECTION, on a scale of 1: 500, has a dual objective. On the first hand, to represent the RELATIONSHIP

between the various INTERIOR SPACES of the buildings. On the second hand to study the relationship between the design and the context.

31

The SECTION on a 1: 200 scale, instead, focus on the volume of the hall, showing the LARGE STAIRCASE and the rooms that are placed under it: flexible spaces dedicated to exhibitions and an auditorium-projection room, including, among others, a VOLUME, light and transparent, made of POLYCARBONATE, without ground supports but only attached to the staircase structure.

AFTER EXPO 2015 A new hospital center for Milan

Date: Location: Surface: Advisor:

Academic Project

34

July, 2016 Milano, Italy 100000 Mq Arch. M. Capolongo, Arch. E. Romagnoli

Addressing the theme of the “CITY OF HEALTH proposed in this workshop was very inspiring. For the first time I had to deal with a topic that because of its MULTIFUNCTIONALITY was rather complex and articulated. Reflecting about the design of an organism that can integrate different functions and accomodate different users living in it is fundamental in this profession. Those functions range from the RESIDENTIAL FUNCTIONS for the HOSPITALIZATION areas to commercial spaces, from functions similar to the one found in the tertiary sector, such as administration and management, to functions related to issues such as the operational block. The hospital becomes a generator of activities, able to trigger the proliferation of places and life both in and around itself.

Render project

35

STRATEGY The design strategy takes the DECUMANUS AXIS as the matrix of the entire area. The hospital is in fact set up and organised according to the orientation of the Cascina Triulzia that is incorporated in the project.

IDENTIFICATION OF TWO AXES

FRONTS AND RELATIONSHIPS The function of the main area , which corresponds to the access of the building and that overlooks east on a large paved space, is to be able to receive and direct incoming and outgoing flows, both towards the axis of the decumanus and towards the new axis of the hospital.

IDENTIFICATION OF MARGINS

PUBLIC AND RECEPTIVE FRONT

Academic Project

36

INTERACTIONS OF ELEMENTS The building is articulated around a COMPOSITION of DIFFERENT VOLUMES, ensuring a strong link with the spaces of the surrounding terrain. A deliberately separated volume breaks the ALIGNMENTS. A third volume - characterised by its freeformcreates a direct connection between the volume of the patient rooms and the spaces dedicated to research.

THE STRUCTURE The VENTILATED FAร ADE consists of the substructure formed by machined aluminum profiles pre assembled to the slab according to the orthogonal design lines. The micrometric adjustments on four main axes, allow perfect alignments and allow with absolute simplicity, the realization of the coplanarity between the single slabs. Since each sub-structure pre-assembled on a slab, overlaps and couples on that of the slab that precedes it, the ventilated faรงade is defined as a closed joint and therefore can be supported by a chamber with air circulation contained to a minimum.

OPENAIR MUSEUM Workshop Cortona SMARTcity Date: Location: Surface: Advisor:

June, 2014 Perugia, Italy 250 Mq Arch. E. Vita

The workshop consisted in the EXTENSION of some areas of the museum allowed for the creation of spaces which would not only have a function as exhibition spaces but also be used as meeting points or as spaces in which cultural events linked to the city of Cortona could be organised. There are two DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS attached to this project: The first one is the use and valorisation of a derelict space. There was indeed no modification to the actual state of the building, was just added a “Corten steel line” that can be used both as a guideline to follow walking in the museum as well as another way to present the different works showed during the exhibitions. The second one is connected to the CONCEPT OF “SMART CITY”, a QR code concept was elaborated in order to orient the visitors towards the new extension of the museum and to enable them to get direct access to extra contents, explanations about the spaces and artifacts.

CULTURAL HUB Montevecchia the cultural village Date: Location: Surface: Advisor:

Academic Project

46

February, 2014 Montevecchia, Italy 50000 Mq Arch. E. Vita, Arch. M. Nebuloni

The project in the area of Montevecchia in a Cultural Village wants to enhance the NATURAL features of the village, as a hinge point between two parks and as the highest place in Brianza, and the square as an ATTRACTIVE POINT through architecture. The realization of this CULTURAL HUB takes place through a series of activities focused on sharing, which take shape within the ARCHITECTURAL SPACES. The educational environments, the exhibition path that runs through the architecture, the green areas and the presence of an artistic residence favor the interaction between users. The project consists in the development of THREE PLATES, generated by the combination of triangles of different sizes and inclinations, which break the geometry of the SQUARE. The plates are not just extensions of the square, which act as a cover, but are a means by which an architectural space is generated.

REPUBLICA PORTATIL Art and Craft building for Penco village

Internship

56

During my exchange in Chile I did an internship in the ARMAMAQUETA modeling studio. ArmaMaqueta is a laboratory that deals with creating large-scale architectural models for various Chilean studies. Thanks to them I had the chance to meet the team of REPUBLICA PORTATIL, one of the emerging studios in Chile, with whom I made several architectural models concerning the artisan village for Penco. The village consists of 14 wooden MODULES where artisans can work and at the same time sell their goods. This collaboration was fundamental in my academic career as I had the opportunity to come into direct contact with the client and a cohesive team that made me participate in the ARCHITECTURAL DEVELOPMENTS of the project from day one, also teaching me a construction technology that during these years I used very little, wood. the photos on the side refer to a maquette on the scale at 1:50 which represents one of the wooden housing modules for craftsmen.

57

GRUPPO TALCA El mastil, la mesa, el piso

Competition peoject

58

During the months I spent in Chile I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop organized by the TALCA GROUP. Grupo Talca is a team of young architects that bases its architectural philosophy on the use of LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE and RECYCLABLE materials, combining an innovative design with the Chilean tradition. The workshop, which lasted a week, had the purpose of creating a table for at least 10 people that had the possibility of being decomposable according to the required situation. the entire object had to be made using two materials: wood, metal. Simple but at the same time complex materials that can be cut, folded, pierced The Grupo Talca is famous in Chile for bringing students during workshops around woods, ponds and along river banks, looking for materials that can be reused. In fact, the wood used to make the table was recovered on the banks of a Biobio river during a day of exploration. This experience has allowed me not only to produce an object in a short time but above all with the materials that nature gives us every day. No changes have been made to the current material status. Once each element of the table design was designed, thanks to the laboratory granted in the university, it was given the opportunity to create a part of the project.

LUCA FINOTTI VALENTINO MOODBOARD

Internship

60

During the first year of Architecture Master, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Luca Finotti, Art Director of fashion. My job was to create Moodboards for some fashion houses like GaudĂŹ, Valentino, Calvin Klain and Dolce & Gabbana. Although not focused on the architectural world, my studies and my creative skills were essential for creating the moodboards. Luca in Moodboard uses a direct language, youthful and simple in appearance. During this collaboration I realized that behind an advertisement there is a real architectural project: studies on color, proportions, design references, precision, construction of a concept that we want to convey and different professionalisms that must work together. the image on the side is a page on the Moodboard regarding male and female color studies for a Valentino advertisement.

ILLUSTRATION PERSONAL WORKS

Personal works

62

During the months spent in Chile I developed a passion that goes on until today, that is graphic illustrations. My graphic illustrations were inspired by travels made in South America and by the people I met during these journeys. The colors and textures are a reference to one of my favorite architects, Luis Barragan. For the design of the vegetation I am more inspired by the architect Lina Bo Bardi, an Italian woman who moved to Brazil where she spent most of her life in her famous glass house, a house almost entirely made of glass and immersed in the Amazon jungle.

MICROHOME PERSONAL WORKS

Competition peoject

66

For the MICROHOME 2019 architecture competition, participants are invited to submit their designs for a micro home - an off-grid modular structure that would accommodate a hypothetical young professional couple. The only requirement is that the structure’s total floor area does not exceed 25sqm, beyond that participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible. Participants are encouraged to rethink spatial organisation and incorporate unique aesthetics, new technologies and innovative materials that will make the micro home an entirely new form of architecture. As there is no specified competition site, project designs can be set within any hypothetical site of any size, in either a city or countryside location anywhere in the world.
