CORTINA D’AMPEZZO RESIDENCE Location: Cortina d’Ampezzo - Italy Service: Architecture, Interior Design Type: Refurbishment Status: Completed Year: 2017 Publications: Archdaily

Located in one of the most renowned Italian mountain area and situated on the last floor of a 30s Italian listed villa, Cortina Residence has been completely renovated. Focusing the attention on the preservation of the traditional materials and the strong connection with the surrounding natural landscape, the project aims to use the design furniture as a tool to enhance the new space of the apartment. The first approach was to create an open space towards the terrace: the existing corridor has been demolished, making the new space brighter through the use of the light while entering the apartment. Compared to the existing plan, the apartment now includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen, optimising the new distribution of the space in the best way p`ossible and ensuring the client`s requests and aims. The living room has been designed including a custom-made sofa

and a 100-year-old Abete boiserie, designed in a modern insight along the existing wall. Sliding frameless doors divide the spaces both from inside to outside and towards the other sides of the apartment. Preserving the architectural integrity of the structure, the wood beam has been treated in order to protect the view of the traditional ceiling, as well as the new iron beam that reinforces the original structure. The living room has been designed mixing bespoke and artisanal products with several examples of high design, such as the Vibia lamps or the Olivari door lever handles. This space boasts high ceilings and overlooks the outside terrace through the frameless doors. As a spatial continuity of the living room, the terrace has been completely refurbished with new floor finishes, benches and outside tables. Discontinuous lines want to make a conceptual relation with the stunning mountain skyline in the background.

The kitchen has a simple and minimal design: the dark grey/ green palette of the appliances reminds of the natural shades of the Dolomite mountains` fir trees. The bathrooms have been treated with a minimal sensitivity: the original floor and timber maintain the traditional integrity with the rest of the apartment, but new white washbasins and grey resin on the wall give a modern touch. Mixing traditional materials and contemporary furniture, Cortina Residence expresses an accurate interior design approach focusing high attention on both the renovation of the interior spaces and the specific design details.

Due to client needs, the project was divided into two phases: the first phase focuses on the refurbishment of the living room, a bedroom, the bathrooms and the corridor. The second phase involves the design of the kitchen and the other bedrooms. The existing floor has been completely replaced, improving the sound insulation performance and adding the underfloor heating. The floor finish in corridor and living room is composed of oak wood elements arranged in a herringbone pattern. The mechanical and electrical system has been inspected and optimized. The areas currently not included in the scope of work have already been prepared with all the connections in view of a second phase of work. The furnishings and decorations come mainly from Italian companies.

THE NATURAL STONE SHOW Location: London - United Kingdom Service: Architecture Type: Exhibition pavilion Status: Completed Year: 2017

The pavilion has been designed for an italian marble company. From the beginning, our concept was to design a prototype which could be reused and reinterpreted for other shows. The principal elements of the stands are free standing and ease to be reassembled. The metal frames can be reused; each time they can display different types of marble. We wanted to showcase the marble in a surrounding that interacts with architecture. The patterns, colours and surfaces make this material unique. We wanted to enhance all these characteristics

with the use of larger pieces of marble set in a very defined architectural stage. Rather than exhibiting only small samples of marbles, we insist that the display of larger pieces of marble will help viewers further understand the type of material and the design of the marble’s texture veins. Like a gallery would, the pavilion guides the customers to the available pieces. The concept of the stand will be utilized for further installations, exhibitions and displays giving the company a clear identity and message.

MANHATTAN TOWNHOUSE Location: New York - United States Service: Architecture, Interior Design Type: Refurbishment, Structural consolidation Status: Ongoing Year: 2018

Manhattan Townhouse is the renovation of fourstory apartment and terrace in an Upper West Side townhouse. The main goal of the project is to optimize the spatial perception encouraging the natural light. Originally, the distribution between the floors of the property took place through two separate staircases that fragmented the internal surface, limiting its usability. The renovation involves the elimination of both stairs and the installation of a new staircase which connect the four levels. The engineering works are remarkable, in particular the reconnection of the new staircase with the existing structure.

AXONOMETRY REAR FACADE

Natural light plays a leading role in this project. A cone of light penetrates through a glazed skylight along the central axis of the property. Light and elegant steel elements mark the boundaries of the staircase, turning into a handrail and reflecting natural light until the lowest floor. In addition to the internal distribution, the project includes the interior renovation, with the renewal of the entire mechanical and electrical system and the demolition/construction of internal partitions to improve the livability of the house. Rear faรงade renovation is planned in a second stage.

TOKYO POPLAB Location: Tokyo - Japan Service: Architecture competition Year: 2017

The Tokyo Arts Centre provides an open multipurpose space for the temporary exhibitions, installations, performances, workshops, an auditorium and a library. Conceived as a dynamic space, the level of the ground floor extends to the outside originating a whole volume. It is an architecture of connected spaces, a series of stacking and interlocking squares, that promote privacy from the main street and openness on the side where the entrances and the sculptural garden are located. These are light boxes that create movement; they invite to explore the space and to discover the

views of the city and the surrounding landscape. The building enhances simplicity, flexibility and expresses a deep cultural outlook of Japanese tradition and innovation. We wanted to emphasize lightness as this component in Japanese architecture traces its origin back to traditional wooden construction. We immersed ourselves with the exploration of the Japanese lifestyle to discover a fascinating world built upon a deep historical route which is also open to embrace modernity. The building is a beacon of light, a cultural event for the neighbour and for the city.
