A Trip Around Europe

The final event of the project was a musical. The theme of flying was used to take the audience on a journey to each of the partner's countries. Song, music and dance captured the culture and traditions of each country. We would like to thank all the students that took part in this project and contributed with their knowledge, expertise, skills and attitude to share good practices and learn with each other. As a TEAM (Together Each Achieve More) we were an example to follow. We would like to thank all the teachers and staff in general to their contribution with their willingness to share their time and good practices. Without them we could not have achieved this level of quality. We would like to thank to the City Halls because of their support and contribution in different ways but that helped us to reach our goal. Thank you for all the people that helped us in different ways, specially parents that were involved and supported us with logistics and even a special thank you that hosted our students around Europe.

1st stop - A look at Portuguese music “FADO” in which the fate or destiny of the Portuguese people is sang. A unique form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea and the fisherman or the life of the poor, and infused with a characteristic sentiment of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia. The most famous of these interpreters is Amália Rodrigues. It was inscribed in 2011 in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. So, in order to get a “taste” of this beautiful music genre, Beatriz is going to sing “Gaivota” (seagull) one of Amália’s emblematic Fado. 2nd stop - A look at our unique folk dances. Each region of Portugal has its own style of dance and songs with the most traditional tunes played at different rhythm, depending from where they originate - the north or the south. Some of the best examples of the regional dances are the vira, corridinho, chula and regadinho where couples perform lively dance usually to a fast beat of hand clapping, guitars and accordions. It is danced with the pairs always embraced and forming a circle. Many of these dances reflect the courting and matrimonial traditions of the area. During many of these traditional dances, people dress up in a variety of ways. It is highly varied, ranging from colorful work clothes to the Sunday best, with rich distinguished from the poor. Our students and teachers, dressed in a colorful variety of costumes, will “transport” everyone to one of these festivities by dancing the regadinho.

After the meeting in Italy where it was fully and definitively decided what form our Musical would take, we arrived back in Austria full of ideas and ready to get to work with the students.

There are 42 students in our Sternschule ranging from 3 years of age to 15. We have decided to include all the students in the Musical, the same way we always do things. This means we will have to create a music DVD rather than perform live in Poland. We intend to begin by dedicating every second Monday afternoon to planning, preparing and practising our Musical, until it is complete. The first approach we will take is to brainstorm. Simone and I will conduct this exercise with the students, contemplating questions such as; What is special and unique about Austria? Are there some elements that would be recognisable as ‘Austrian’ to our European partners? What does it mean to be ‘Austrian’? and so on… After each brainstorming exercise (we shall do a few), we will divide the students into groups, mixed from the first grade to the eighth grade. Each group should elect a leader and organise among themselves who will take certain roles. In a limited time they will choose a space to create a role-play of a topic from the brainstorming session. their piece. Each week we will build upon these original ideas; adding language, music etc.

From these exercises we expect the students to create and develop their ideas. Collectively, we will decide which ideas to use in the musical and develop our direction together. Each teacher will get involved whether it be in the dramatic parts, musical parts, language parts, I.T parts or other. Our goal in the 10 minute limit is to show Austria’s most identifiable, traditional elements; as well her uniqueness. Through a mixture of music (traditional and Classical-Mozart), dance and dramatisation we intend to bring our niche to life; using only the English language.

Our school has make a musical presentation of a tipical Canaria dance . We did it during the celebration of “ Gran Canaria day” . The students who dance in the video clip are from first level to sixth level ( 6-12 years old)and the music that they dance are: §

LA SEGUIDILLA:

The 'Seguidillas', which has been called 'Seguidillas corridas' (running) in the eastern islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, is lively and spirited. When two singers alternate verses, repeating the last words sung by their partners, it is known as 'saltona' or 'leap'.
