TEACHER'S DOG EATS EXAM

For centuries, students have been coming up with lame excuses for not completing their homework.”The house burned down.” “My laptop was stolen.” “The dog ate it.”

APC can top them all. And this time the teacher can verify it –because it’s the teacher's fault.

Last week, teacher Matt Harvey momentarily took his eyes off his pooch Roscoe, who was visiting the school for Dog Friday.

When he looked around, Roscoe was satisfying his hunger by chomping through a pile of year-10 PE exam papers belonging to Thomas Malan.

We found the story hard to swallow until Matt delivered the evidence in the attached pictures.

Fortunately Matt had already marked the exam and entered the student’s score. But he won’t tell us whether the student passed or failed.

OUR MUSIC CONCERT SELLS OUT

Welcome to this special music edition of the APC Newsletter, which celebrates our music program reaching new heights.

Those of you lucky enough to attend our annual Music Show –“No Limits” at Memo Hall in St Kilda recently will know just how impressive our young musicians are.

Our instrumental music coordinator, Alex Hansen, said at the show that APC’s music program is simply the best he has ever seen. He’s not exaggerating. Not only are our music teachers professional performing musicians –including some of the best jazz musos in Melbourne – but some of the students are too.

In fact our top rock and pop bands are already performing professionally as support acts at professional gigs. It’s no wonder several attendees I spoke to described the acts as already professional standard.

This isn’t surprising and hasn’t happened by chance. APC has invested much time, energy and resources into making us a great music school, proving in the process what public schools are capable of and that you don’t have to send your children to a private school to develop their creative talent.

The incredible sophistication of the acts at this year’s Music Show was made possible by our Music Camp earlier this year when our music students and teachers combined to plan, practice and perfect their techniques and performances.

I’ve no doubt that some of our musicians – 100 of whom performed – will go on to professional music careers. Those who don’t will still benefit enormously by knowing what creativity they are capable of and by developing the confidence to play in front of big audiences.

By holding the Music Show at a famous local venue, we demonstrated what a great community school we are – giving back to families and businesses that so generously support us. Don’t forget that in Week 2 of Term 3, our musicians will be backing up with High School the Musical at the Capitol Theatre St Kilda.

You’ll be seeing advertising around town soon. Don’t forget to get your tickets.

THE CRUSHES

MARSHALL WHITE HELPS SUPPORT MUSIC AT APC

On 20 May Oliver Bruce and Ben Manolitsas of Marshall White real estate attended one of APC's mid term music performances to present a donation which will contribute greatly to our performing arts capability.

Oliver and Ben got to hear our senior students rehearsing numbers that went into our music concert, 'No Limits', which their company helped advertise.

Oliver's and Ben's generous donation to our building fund will support the outfitting of our forthcoming performing arts center in Gasworks Arts Park.

We look forward to this being just the beginning of a great partnership to help develop the creativity of the young people of our community.

MODEL UN REPRESENTS ALBERT PARK

This term our Model UN delegates have been so busy advocating and negotiating for change! Representing countries from all over the world, they all engaged in diplomatic debates to further their interests in the international community.

The APC Model UN Club had the opportunity to compete in model UN competitions with local high schools. One held at the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) and the other one at the Mac. Robertson Girls' High School.

Our APC delegates did an amazing job in debating diplomatically with other countries and students from different high schools and should be proud of their efforts in pursuing their state’s interests.

To represent our region in the Rotary district 3800 Model United Nations Competition, our double delegation, Sophia Amin and Texa Blanchy attended a two day conference where they represented the Commonwealth of Australia and voiced their interests on a range of topics, then at the end of the conference they were awarded the ‘best response to crisis’ award, as they created a United Nations resolution to address the dangers of an unknown element that entered the international market.

The girls say that the conference was exhilarating as they were required to engage in dialogue to further the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and manage a sudden unforeseen event that struck the international community.

HANNAH RIDES TO SCHOOL –ON A NEW BIKE

At the recent Year-12 assembly, we sprung a nice surprise on student Hannah Lawrence. The mayor of the City of Port Melbourne, Heather Consolo, turned up to give Hannah an award for the best video promoting the benefits of riding to school.

The prize, which is part of Ride to School Day – always strongly supported by APC – was a $720 voucher from St Kilda Cycles.

Well done Hannah.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THE REAL STORY FROM BACKSTAGE

For this year's school musical, APC will be performing a version of High School Musical: On Stage. The performance, rather than taking place at East High, is set here in our very own school. Rehearsals for the musical began in early February and the performance will be on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 July.

We have involved students from across the entire school in all aspects of the production including the band, cast, design team, and crew. It has some of the largest school involvement with over 80 students involved both on and behind the stage.

The musical rehearsals have been led by Performing Arts coordinator Ms Sabatino along with Performing

Arts Captain Evie McGinley, who has taken on the lead role of assistant director.

Lily Hall

APC’s High School Musical has been such an incredible project.

I play Gabriella Montez in the musical and I have found it so exciting to see the insane amount of talented singers, dancers and actors throughout the APC student cohort. Although it has sometimes been difficult with the year 12 workload, I find that I’m always looking forward to Monday and Wednesday afternoon rehearsals.

So far, we have covered some iconic fan favourites such as Getcha Head In The Game, Start Of

Something New and Breaking Free. We have also choreographed and rehearsed many incredible dances.

Dance is something very new to me and I have loved learning and practicing them with the group. Overall, it has been fascinating to unpack and bring something new to the character of Gabriella. I can’t wait for the wider APC community to see our interpretation.

Evie McGinley

Working on High School Musical has definitely been one of the highlights of my Year 12. At the start of the rehearsals, Ms. Sabatino asked me to not only be in the musical as a cast member

but be the assistant director for the musical. Directing the musical has been such an eye-opening experience and has taught me so much about theatre and drama.

When I first pitched the musical idea to Mr. Cook we presented the musical as ‘High School Musical: The APC Edition’ and explained how we were bringing the world of East High to our very own halls. The APC ‘flavor’ can be seen in the costume reflecting the school house colors as well as the set replicating the school's look.

Playing the character Taylor has been such a fun challenge, I thought she was the complete opposite of me so exploring her personality and characteristics really helped me find similarities

we have and she's become a character I'm quite protective over.

Rehearsals have been chaotic, to say the least, we have had so much to get through in a short amount of time but they have been so much fun. I would definitely say my favorite rehearsals were either the dance rehearsals or when I was directing. Not being a very good dancer myself, it was so much fun to just go with it and embrace the silliness.

Directing gave me so many opportunities to think more creatively and work closely with the other actors, specifically working with the younger students was so inspiring watching their excitement to be a part of the musical.

Though at times year 12 has been completely overwhelming and the musical definitely was an added stress, It has been such a positive experience in my life and something I have always looked forward to.

I highly recommend anyone who is interested in the musical for next year to just give it a go! There are so many people involved who want to help you and build you up, you make so many friends across year levels and will have so much fun. As for the rest of the musical process, I'm most looking forward to the feeling everyone gets when they first walk into the theater and the communal excitement everyone has, and of course, performing!

Tickets were released on Thursday 13 June and will remain on sale until sold out, so get ready to sing along to all your favourite songs and get your head in the game!

WHEN THEY’RE NOT STUDYING

You all know our amazing musicians, who have become regular features of school life, playing at our big concerts, assemblies, battles of the bands and other events.

But did you know that our leading bands and musicians don’t just play at school and have big public followings? We thought we’d introduce you to a few of them.

MANSPLAINERS

Libby Homer, Matilda Lester, Lucy Ellenberger, Lily Hall and James Keating. Mansplainers were on ABC TV's 'Turn Up The Volume' in 2023, have played Always Lives' 'Garageband' Event at Fed Square, The Espy, and other gigs, including supporting Emilee South at The Gem in April. Mansplainers played this show alongside APC alumni Hot Glue.

Affectionately known as the 'Splainers', they've just been recording their first single at Collarts in Collingwood, with Jesse Hooper. Stay tuned! Instagram.

NEBULAM

Fabrizio Cascino, Vincenzo di Palma and Avediz Rokoua. Aptly self-described as "Port Melbourne Black Hole Hardcore". Nebulam have been playing venues like Last Chance Rock'n'Roll Bar, The Tote, The Workers Club and have been on PBS FM's show 'Burning Bitumen' to chat about their music.

They have released music on digital platforms, and continue to establish themselves in the Melbourne hardcore scene, building a great community around them as they go. Instagram.

OWEN WILKINS

One of our APC Music Captains, Owen plays regularly in a jazz band. His band has plays at Irish pubs, private functions, events and many other venues across Melbourne.

WHEN THEY’RE NOT TEACHING

We all know why APC’s musicians are the best . . . their teachers are professional performing musicians well known in the Melbourne and Australian music industry. When the editors requested information on our teachers’ professional music activities, we received enough listings to fill an entire edition of this newsletter. Here’s a sample. We’ll give you details of some more of our musicians in subsequent editions.

MATT DIXON AND HANNAH CAMERON

This year Matt and Hannah have been on tour with The Paper Kites. They've just completed three USA tours, and a European tour, playing sold out shows in venues like The Forum in London (2500+ capacity) and at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock. Check out their Spotify page, with more than 1.2 million plays. Hannah’s recent album ' Holding Pattern' was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and was PBS FM's Feature Album.

LIAM MCGORRY

Liam is an incredible multiinstrumentalist in many Melbourne soul, pop and funk bands. He plays with Ella Thompson, Dorsal Fins, Adrian Eagle (recently on Spicks and Specks!) and more, as well as making music under the name Ex Olympian.

BEC GORING

Bec plays guitar in Mia Wray's band, who just wrapped an Aus tour supporting Middle Kids. Both bands had songs featured in our Music Concert ('Tell Her' by Mia Wray and 'Edge of Town' by Middle Kids). Bec also plays with Merpire, Heavy Moss and has her own project under her name Goring can also claim to be

the only music teacher with their own bobble-head, as she was Geelong Cats AFLW Vice Captain a few years back!

SOPHIA LUBCZENKO

Sophia plays lead guitar and cowrites in Bad Bangs , who have just released their brilliant sophomore album 'Out Of Character'. Bangs are soon to embark on a Victorian tour. Lubczenko also has her own project called 'Sledgehammer'.

EMILEE SOUTH

Emilee is released her debut album, ' LUXURY ' this week. Her band is made up of all APC teaching staff, Matt Dixon, Bec Goring and Holly Thomas! The latest music video for single 'Control' was premièred in Rolling Stone! Our very own Mansplainers, Hot Glue (Lily Harnath and Pearl Harnath) and APC staff recently supported Emilee’s band at her 'Control' Single Release Residency at The Gem.

HOLLY THOMAS

Holly’s band Quivers will be releasing their sophomore album in August, following their latest single 'Oyster Cuts'. Holly also plays drums with just about every Melbourne band, including Baby Velvet, Freya Josephine Hollick, Tamara and The Dreams, and many more.

DARVID THOR

Darvid runs a record label called Beloved Records , who have put out music by Darvid himself, Lewis Coleman and Rowena Wise (whose stunning, most recent album 'Senseless Acts of Beauty', Matt Dixon also played on).

APC COMMUNITY

NATIONAL SORRY DAY LUNCH WITH STUDENT LEADERS

On 28 of May, the Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation invited Albert Park College student leaders and Mr Nolan to participate in a National Sorry Day luncheon with the local community. The event was to commemorate National Sorry Day in Australia, 26 May, which is a national day of healing and recognition of the Stolen Generations.

Year 11 student leaders Sophia Amin, Texa Blanchy and James Keating represented the college at this important community and cultural event, where they heard

from First Nations in the community and shared their thoughts, along with students from Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, on what reconciliation means to them.

The students say that they were thankful for the opportunity to attend and that they feel empowered to continue their work alongside the student reconciliation action plan group to further the relationships between the local First Nation community and APC.

STAFF AND STUDENTS

THIS TERM IN FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Here are some examples of the amazing dishes our Food Technology students have created over the term.

Year 10s designed their own vegan dishes and the year 7s created dishes from their unit Farm to Fork.

Staff recently took part in a staff wellbeing activity where they were taught by Caro Flood how to construct floral designs. They made some wonderfully creative arrangements!

An Albert Park College Team has been set up for Connor’s Run on Sunday 15 September.

Year-10 student Nicholas Cresp and his mother Simone (the APC School Council President) are ambassadors for Connor’s Run organisation and volunteers for their big event. They are looking for students to join the team and raise money to assist children with Brain Cancer.

Please get involved.

To join Connor’s APC Team, you can email Simone here: simone@iascend.edu.au

All the event details are here.

COMMUNITY

YOUNG LEADERS ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE

Earlier this term, Albert Park College established a youth committee with our local MP for the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Ms Nina Taylor. The group, consisting of students in both the middle and senior years, meets together weekly to discuss their shared goal: to use their voices as young leaders in the community to initiate and advocate for change.

Then later on in term 2 the group was able to meet with Nina Taylor where they presented their ideas and thoughts as young people within her jurisdiction.

After the meeting, the youth committee felt enthusiastic and inspired to take further action on the issues that they care about. Next term, the youth committee will meet with Nina again to present their road map and thoughts in achieving their projects.

BREAKING NEWS: CELINA TOPS THE STATE!

We just wanted to let you all know about this incredible achievement by year-12 student Celina Safwan.

On 17 July she will be receiving a VCE Premiers Award for her Arabic subject from last year - she got the highest score in Victoria!!

Incredible!! Well done Celina!

ALYSSA RETURNS TO THE SEA

Everyone at APC will remember Alyssa Seckinger-Crowe, who famously swam the English Channel during her VCE SwotVac in 2022. How could we forget that?

Alyssa has returned to the sea, so to speak, as a leader of the Young Ocean Innovators Program, which educates and trains young people to become future advocates for the world’s oceans in the face of climate change and pollution, starting here with Port Phillip Bay.

The Program, which Alyssa designed as an engineering student and the University of Melbourne and Wattle Fellowship holder, offers a free six-week program for high school students in the Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay areas.

Students from six local secondary schools came together for the program that ran at the APC Gatehouse Campus on Princes Pier for two hour workshops each week after school. There was also a wonderful excursion where participants swam with Dolphins and seals in the Bay.

At the conclusion of the YOI program her group of secondary students were invited to the University of Melbourne for a Young Ocean Innovators Showcase Event. The inaugural cohort included APC students Matilda Crump, Finlay Grapes, Artemis Vitale, and Nayley Wijegunawardana, all from Year 9, and Alice Uhm from Year 11.

SCULPTURE AT STUDIO HALL WORKSHOP

Making the most of our wonderful creatives at Studio Hall (the repurposed Uniting Church Hall in Dorcas St, South Melbourne), a small group of senior IB Visual Arts students and their teacher Michelle Luckman undertook a ceramic casting workshop with artist Kristin Burgham.

The students loved getting their hands dirty with this unfamiliar process and they look forward to continuing their work with Kristin to create finished sculptural pieces. Watch this space!
