It’s been another term of being physically kept apart by the need to defeat COVID-19, but it’s amazing how much has continued on in the face of seemingly impossible limitations. We all know just how well teaching and learning has responded to the challenge of going online, but our nonclassroom activities have also shown the way.
More than 100 students and staff have participated weekly in our At Home Fitness Club, which has provided a platform for everyone to connect, cheer on their friends, dare their teachers to lose those iso-kilos, earn points for their house and stay fit. A highlight, I’m informed, was Mr Nolan’s valiant effort in the ‘sally up sally down squats challenge’. The school acknowledges everyone who had a go, including Ella Tobin, our sports captain, who played a great leadership role.
We have put together this video featuring a range of the wonderful things the whole school has done to keep learning and looking out for each other during the lockdown period. It’s a fantastic tribute to everyone at APC.
Our sport and leadership programs have also continued through the lockdown, with yoga, gymnastics, martial arts and basketball offered online and getting a healthy following.
These efforts at keeping fit of course culminate is One big triumph has been the continuation the first ever Virtual Athletics Carnival to be held this of the school sports and physical wellbeing Friday morning, 18 September. Using technology to measure, report their progress and urge on their house programs. Ably led by Kim Thomson, our and their friends, students will be competing against sports teachers and school and house the clock and the tape in sprinting, jumping, walking, leaders have kept us exercising and competing, ensuring the house competition long distance, rowing and combined events. As usual, there will be prizes for the best dressed house, with continued in innovative ways. It has been incredibly important, keeping us fit but also the overall result announced digitally at Midday. connected, outdoors and conscious of diets and good sleep routines — all so important for our broader wellbeing. Remembering Cathy Freeman’s inspiration
Take a break from your screen
Talking about the house sports competition reminds us of the person that Freeman House was named after: the great Cathy Freeman, whose gold medal in the women’s 400 metre run at the 2000 Sydney Olympics happened 20 years ago this week.
I want to thank the whole school for its extraordinary effort in keeping teaching and learning thriving in these difficult circumstances. I’m incredibly proud of you. You have earned a rest during these term holidays and I want all of you to take a When we were establishing the house system, we good break, stay refreshed, keep fit and, wanted to get away from colours alone to name our maybe most importantly, give yourself houses after people who could sum up the qualities plenty of time away from the screen. Ready for a puzzle at the Maths Enrichment Club Well done to everyone who has got involved and submitted – in particular Miranda Vaz and Lily Hall and their families. Each week we will post a puzzle on Google Classroom. They are designed to be fun to complete and you will be able to solve it in a lot of ways. You and your household may complete part of the challenge or all of it, the point is you tried and you spoke about maths! If you are interested in joining in with Maths Enrichment Club please join our Google classroom. The code is pcqship. We will launch our puzzles on a Monday and you can join our Google meet on a Monday recess to discuss the problem and get started. To the right is our newsletter challenge taken from nrich.org. Submit your answers and solutions to Google Classroom to participate and we will publish the answers in the next newsletter. K, L, M, N and P all represent different digits. What could they equal? Here is a second one similar to the one above. An extra challenge: can you make up one of your own? We look forward to seeing your answers. Miss Roberts and Mr McGouran
Year 8 Makerspace students explore soundscapes In the lockdown, we’ve looked for ways to discuss the important issue of positive mental health. As part of this, Year 8 Makerspace students were asked to record local sounds that made them feel calm. Students then developed a soundscape featuring these sounds, combined with Garageband Loops featuring the concept of “calmness”. Students looked at the engineering involved in sound layering and built on the concepts currently being explored in Year 8 Science. Students then went on to build instruments from existing objects at home. Click the sound image to hear our creation. Featured in this piece are Rachael D, Evangelina K, Lily H, Archie L, Georgia S Yasmin D, Olivia M, Jack K & Aaron A.

Library Corner – another great Book Week Although it looked a little different to normal, this year’s Book Week was a great hit! Thank you everyone for your virtual zeal, we hope you enjoyed the activities as much as we did. We ended up having two winners for the ‘Recreate a Book Cover in Iso’ competition. While all of the entries blew us away, Ivy Li’s (8F) gorgeous rendition of My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrel and Caroline Tan-Wong’s (9E) inventive take on This Vicious Cure by Emily Suvada were highlights. Our week-long Library Bingo game also resulted in two winners. Only minutes after the final book passage was released on our Google Classroom page, Tiana Saad (11E) and Angel Malhorta’s (7E) bingo cards were submitted at exactly the same time. We commend your agility! Also, a big congratulations to Johanna Tam (10E) who took out the title for the Library Guessing Game.
Package. Finally, as part of our APC Reading Challenge, a total of $350 was raised for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal during Book Week alone! During that week, every book recorded on the Premiers’ Reading Challenge website was matched with a $5 donation by the Rotary Club of Albert Park (as opposed to the usual $1 per book). So far we have raised more than $800 for the Bushfire Appeal as a result of students’ reading efforts. With only one week to go of both the APC Reading Challenge and the state-wide Premiers’ Reading Challenge, we are very proud of you all! Even when it’s not Book Week, the Library Space Google Classroom is alive with library updates, activities and reading recommendations. We invite all students to join it (code: p5qtyvk) Veronica, Jess and Clive
Meanwhile, on the Friday of Book Week we held a creative writing Google Meet where Johanna Tam (10E) and Nick Balnionis (9C) delighted us with their written prose. Throughout the week we were also treated to librarian Clive’s memoirs, “The Makings of a Bookseller”, and our writer-in-residence/librarian Jess’ creative writing industry tips: Writing Opportunities

Girls Design Virtual Program
“Aditi was an awesome teacher and the content delivered was also great.”
Throughout Term 3 a group of Year 7 and 8 female students have been working remotely on a program to develop their software design skills to create a product to be used by the community. The program has been delivered remotely by Aditi Venkatesh. Aditi is a third year Computer Science and Commerce student at Monash University. She has been involved with Girls Invent for the past four years and is passionate about continuing to empower female students. She also has previous experience at Google where she interned as a Software Engineer.
“I enjoyed getting the opportunity to make something real like how we turned an idea into a real design and eventually a product pitch.” “I thought this experience was really engaging and I learnt a lot of skills which will be really useful in the future.” This is definitely an experience that has set the students up for their future success! We can’t wait to see their products come to fruition. Look out for their apps coming soon on the app store! Rebecca Seel
Girls Design is a schools based inventing and business development program. Through a structured series of focused workshops, our girl inventors from APC created their own original product or service idea and were shown how to progress it as any entrepreneur would into a real business. The girls developed some fabulous ideas, including developing an app to assist people with first aid, an app to help you decide what to watch on Netflix, apps to aid with dance technique and exercise, apps to assist with art projects and also safe space apps for the LGBTIQ + community. I was absolutely amazed with the ideas that the girls came up with and the quality and creativity in the work that they produced. This program was extremely motivating and engaging for the students and helped to stimulate their passion for STEM further. Feedback from the girls included: “I loved the experience of it all. I enjoyed the group work and the way that the meetings were set out.” “I LOVED IT. It was amazing to learn all about pitching and designing products in the most effective and interesting ways for your buyers. I especially loved the design aspects and look forward to our pitches.”

Q and A with Aditi What was your favourite subject at school and why? My favourite subject in school was Economics because it combined my love for maths with decision making. It was really interesting to learn more about how the world makes decisions and the factors that impact such decisions! What did you want to be when you were younger? In primary school, I wanted to be a music teacher. I’ve always absolutely loved music and meeting new people. Who is your role model? Ooh that’s a tough one - there are so many incredible females in technology that I look up to! I’d have to say Melanie Perkins. She is not only a female leader in the technology industry but she has also achieved amazing things in the Australian start-up scene. What are you studying at university? I am currently studying a double degree in Computer Science and Commerce at Monash University. My major for my Commerce degree is Econometrics which is a combination of economics and statistics. What has been your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it? As someone that was very new to coding and the world of technology, I’d say my biggest challenge was fitting in during the

first year of Computer Science. The way I overcame this was to take a moment to reevaluate the situation which made me realise that it doesn’t matter what others think! Since then, I’ve got involved with many clubs and societies plus made a ton of friends and learned some really cool things. What was your experience working at Google like? Absolutely amazing!! It was so cool to be surrounded by some of the best programmers and technology professionals in Australia and the world. I learnt so much from them on a daily basis and continue to learn more from them even today. The facilities were pretty cool too. All the things you hear about free food and fun amenities at Google really are true! What are your hopes and dreams for the future? The two most important things for me are: 1. I want to be in a role that is interesting and unique (perhaps something that doesn’t even exist yet) 2. I’m passionate about making a large and positive impact on the community My hopes and dreams are to combine these two things and create a career out of them. What advice would you give to students to help them prepare for their future? The best advice I would give to students is to say yes to every opportunity! As students, you are in the perfect position to try out new things and figure out what you like and don’t like. So, get out there and give new things a go! Have you enjoyed delivering Girls Design with the students from APC? Yes, of course!! It is always a lot of fun meeting new students and hearing about their ideas. The ideas that participants come up with are always so inspiring and APC was no different! I learnt so much from the students that took part in the program this year and hope to meet more of you next year.

RSS @ Bay St Update ResourceSmart Schools is a program which aims to create sustainable and environmentally friendly schools. The role of the core group has been imputing the Bay St bills for water, electricity, gas and waste. Over the past term in Environmental Inquiry, the Core Group, made up of six students from 9E have been working on the Core Module of ResourceSmart Schools. So far we’ve made progress through inputting bills and plan to work towards establishing a baseline of data for the 2019 year. Interpreting the data will be an essential part of our work as well as reporting back our findings. Only through interpreting the data can we begin to look at our school’s ecological footprint and be able to take meaningful action. Our hope is to further work with our fellow peers and collate the work to form an annual school sustainability report, promoting our school’s sustainability. APC’s War on Waste continues
As year 9 students, we have a class that is specifically designed to teach us about the issues facing the environment today. We have explored product supply chains, combed through the problems of our consumerist society and searched for solutions to these problems. We have completed Passion Projects ( including creating a garden, re-using old clothes and having a low-carbon diet) and discussed how these projects improve our lifestyle. Our impact on this planet has never been clearer, and for that reason our school is changing to become more sustainable. Our Year 9 waste group has been working on a new bin management for the college. This system will first be implemented at the Bay Street campus, and will make our waste management sustainable, stylish and BACK TO CONTENTS

convenient for all students and teachers. Using these new bins, we aim to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill and order our rubbish into categories. These categories are: • • • • •
Waste for landfill (red bin) Paper (Blue bin) Recycling (Yellow bin) Organics (Green bin) E-waste (Purple bin).
These bins will be situated around the school in much more obvious positions than now, meaning you guys (students, parents and teachers) will be able to dispose of your waste responsibly on campus with minimal effort; so no more scouring classrooms to find an organics bin, no more of the classic ‘oh well, landfill it is!’ Instead, this chaos will transform into blissful simplicity. We are helping our school implement a new and working bin system to minimise individual struggle and maximise the proper disposal of waste. This system involves having many bin stations. Each station is equipped with either two, three or four bins so that you can have a choice and not just chuck your rubbish in the closest possible bin. At the moment, 36 bins are being emptied with 20 of them being landfill. This current system does not leave much choice about where you can dispose of your waste. However, this new system allows 40 bins to live on the bay street campus and gives a lot more choice for proper disposal.

Our waste audit explained
As you can see from our most recent waste audit, our waste is fundamentally landfill, with other bins such as organics taking a minor role in our waste system. This needs to change, which is another reason why this new waste system is being put in place. As part of our endeavor to make this system the best it can be, some of the students in Year 9 will be coming around to different classes at some point to chat about these new bins, so keep an eye out! Now, we know that as a responsible wastedisposer, it can sometimes be difficult to know what things can go into what bin. For example, teabags. Waste or organics? For that, we have the signage, creatively designed by our team. The signage will be above each bin, reminding us what can go in which bin. Thank you, signage team! Thank you for taking the time to read this; it really means a lot. We can’t wait to implement these new ideas into our school campuses and truly make them something to remember, but we also know that we can’t do it without your help. So please, spread the word and we hope to be seeing you all in the non-virtual world really soon. The APC Waste Team

Magic comes to APC in lockdown With everyone in lockdown we thought students and staff needed some magic in their lives. On Friday 11 September the College engaged Cosentino to present a magic workshop for our students and staff. You may have seen Cosentino on TV or multimedia. He is acclaimed as Australia’s most successful magician, illusionist and escape artist. Some 500 participants turned in to the virtual performance and were treated to a range of magic tricks using everyday items found in their household. At the conclusion of the performance Consentino took a range of questions from the audience. A big thank you to our IT technicians Jackson and Mat for making it all happen and the students who participated in the performance. A message from Lettie, our seeing eye dog As some of you may remember, my human, Miss LeMerle, has been caring for me while I learn to be a seeing eye dog for Vision Australia. I can’t believe I am almost 9 months old! It’s been a challenge for me to build my socialising skills during lockdown, as usually I’m allowed everywhere: cinemas, shopping centres, zoos, parks and even school! However, I’ve still been able to get lots of social interaction around my local suburb. My human keeps taking me to the supermarket, post office and chemist… surely she’s bought enough by now? Luckily, I love going on walks with her as I get lots of treats just for walking! One of the challenges I have is passing other dogs on my walk, as I really really REALLY want to say hello to them, but I can’t when I am on my lead, so when I don’t look I get even more delicious treats. As an extra reward, my human sometimes takes me to the park or the beach so I can have a play with the other dogs. Another challenge I have is heights and stairs; who decided to design steps with gaps in them? It’s a tough process training to be a Seeing Eye Dog, but if I don’t pass there’s still lots of other jobs I could do, such as Assistant and Therapy Dogs, or perhaps APC will take me on as one of their own? My final assessment is coming up, so cross your paws for me and I will let you know how I go! Lettie

STUDENT VOICE Students leading Positive Education
School Captains for 2021
This term the SRC has been busy developing activities to be implemented within their Positive Education lessons. Our weekly meetings have been structured to separate the leaders into their respective year level groups to plan and design a lesson for Positive Education that they felt would be most valued by their year level. For example, I have been working closely with the Year 11 Ambassadors and they have decided to host a documentary screening for their year level, aligning the topic of the documentary to the themes studied within the Positive Education curriculum. For the lesson entitled ‘The Power of Connectedness & Community’ they hope to show the Adam Goodes’ documentary, ‘The Australian Dream’, alongside a series of follow-up discussion questions to raise awareness and education about the issues faced by Indigenous Australians.
In recent weeks our School Captain Team has been involved in the selection process for 2021 APC School Captains. We have participated in the interview process alongside the Principal team and Ms Lambert, and have been incredibly impressed with the candidates for next year. Last week, the shortlisted candidates uploaded a video-recording of their speeches to be sent out to the student body and staff as part of the voting process. Online democracy in action!
These lessons have been an important part of increasing ‘Student Voice’ within the school, as the lessons have been designed to express what the student body believes is needed and desired within the college curriculum. We can’t wait to see these plans in action!

Sustainability — our vision for the future.
Student Leadership Webinar
It’s been a huge month in sustainability at APC!
On Thursday 13 August, our student leaders from Years 7-12 gathered together (virtually) for our termly Student Conference. This time around, we were lucky enough to be joined by Katherine Copsey, a Councillor for Lake Ward in the City of Port Phillip. We asked Kat a number of leadership-based questions, including “what is the best piece of advice you can give to young leaders who want to make a change within their community?”; and also discussed her involvement and career in politics. Kat’s inspirational messages, particularly with regards to how we can approach some of our leadership goals within areas such as diversity, as well as her advice for those students who wanted to be involved in politics, were deeply valued by the APC student leaders. It’s been a very interesting year for student leadership, however, we have an amazing team who have been innovative and resilient throughout! This leadership conference was a great opportunity to reflect on the achievements that have been made by all student representatives. Once again, a massive thank you and congratulations to everyone involved!
The Sustainability sub committee of the school council has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes as we continue to take steps towards carbon neutrality. A lot of groundwork has been laid in the last few weeks, collecting data, reviewing policies, lobbying politicians and organising the college’s efforts in the sustainability space. Exciting announcements will be following shortly! In the meantime, one of the most important recent developments has been the creation of APC’s Environmental Vision statement. It identifies our unifying goals and principles when it comes to sustainability. As I hope you will agree, it’s great stuff… “We will lead a movement of schools to create a sustainable future for all. We will embed respect for all life into everything we do as an organisation and a community. We are united in our dream of a sustainable world where everyone has access to clean energy, clean air, clean water and clean food. A world where biodiversity flourishes, equality and justice prevail, and sustainability is business as usual.” Oscar Pearce School Captain
