Analysis The ‘Public Realm’ studio attended in TUDelft during the graduation was set up in the context of the Transvaal neighborhood in Den Haag. Transvaal is known for its wide variety of cultures, predominantly from the lower middleclass that live side by side. This dynamic situation is colourful, but at the same time puts pressure on the social well-being within. Transvaal is therefore also known for it’s relatively high crime-rate and problems caused by clashing cultural backgrounds. In order to get a grasp on the area, two main analysese were conducted in order to form a framework upon which a design proposal could be based: 1 How people percieve/use the public space of Transvaal. 2 The feeling of ‘Fear’ in the public space and how the built environment may influence this. Use of public space This research was carried out by mapping what people perceived as their neighbourhood. This was done by the use of the mental-map technique inspired by Kevin Lynch’s book ‘The Image of the City’. By asking people to draw mental maps, the importance of different drawn elements can be analyzed by categorizing them into types: lines (streets, paths), nodes (intersections), landmarks (squares, shops, churches etc.). In addition the analyses attempted to map the scale of how people percieve what the see as their neighbourhood. For this over 70 people throughout entire Transvaal where asked to draw maps. Based on the places mentioned or drawn on the maps a could picture was painted of the important parts of the neighborhood. By comparing the distances of these places to the physical distance also gave a good idea into how far people are willing to travel without leaving their neighbourhood.
