Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR From Wentworth and the Royal Berkshire to smaller, community-focussed clubs, this Award is hard-fought and much prized. For this very reason we divide the category into three (by turnover and/or membership) to ensure an even playing field (or fairway!). CLUBHOUSE AWARDS The Clubhouse Awards were first launched in 2006 to applaud excellence in golf clubs across the UK. Now the Awards are back – and with a vengeance! The Awards will see entries from across the board – from owners and club managers to business development teams and membership managers. These unique Awards underline the significant role that the golf clubs are playing in the UK and Europe.
Judges’ comments: Founded 90 years ago and designed by the iconic James Braid, Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club has been revamping the clubhouse and is seeing the benefits. “Membership has increased because of the refurbishment,” says Marketing Manager John Walker. “The club hosted the British Boys Championships which gave the club a big boost and we’ve had an increase in ladies membership thanks to a big push there.”
Second from left: Bob Williams, Chief Executive of the Golf Club Managers’ Association, presents the Golf Club of the Year Award.
Categories will include • Best Business Initiative of the Year • Best Green Club of the Year • Best Marketing Initiative of the Year • Best Youth Initiative of the Year • Catering Club of the Year • Community Club of the Year • Refurbishment of the Year • Manager/Secretary of the Year • Steward of the Year • Chef of the Year • Golf Group of the Year • Clubhouse of the Year VISIT US AT www.clubhouseeurope.com
CLUBHOUSE CLASSIC The golfing fraternity is always keen to share their experiences, and where better than on the course? Our last tournament hosted 88 golfers from clubs around the country. Suppliers and sponsors are invited to participate in the informal trade show during the day, and to mingle with golfers and club representatives in the clubhouse.

The Club & Institute Union – or CIU – is comprised of nearly 2,000 clubs which have a combined annual turnover in excess of £500 million. We are proud to have been appointed publisher and commercial partner of the CIU. Every month we work with Head Office to produce the association’s much sought-after official magazine Club Journal.
With our commercial hat on, we work to introduce appropriate suppliers to this organisation which works on behalf of its 2,000 member clubs to help them run the best club business that they possibly can. We run the CIU’s Annual Beer & Trades Exhibition, where some 700+ club decision makers attend before the CIU’s AGM. And we’ve extended – and now run – the CIU Racing Club, with discounts secured across the UK’s racecourses. (Nearly 2,000 club members attended Wetherby at the annual CIU Raceday Event last November.) Sheffield’s Annual Dog Racing is another well-attended event with sponsorship opportunities. We also join our CIU colleagues at the regular All Party Parliamentary Group of MPs, lobbying and campaigning for changes in the law.
EDITORIAL – REGULAR SECTIONS INCLUDE: • News and views – what’s happening in CIU clubs around the country • Brands News – Latest on the drinks industry • Sports – CIU competitions and what’s coming up on the big screens • Ask The Experts – advice from key suppliers • HQ – from Health & Safety to personnel issues

Clued up suppliers join in the excitement through sponsorships, money-off race day coupons or even naming their own race. IN-JOURNAL SPONSORSHIPS Limited space in the 150-year old magazine makes this money well spent. This demanding and discerning audience pick up on all things club-related. For stand out, suppliers can consider advertising, advertorials and sponsored pages – all under the auspices of the CIU and run only with their approval.

the Club Awards The one and only Club Awards are literally that – the ONLY Awards which recognise this amazing sector. Launched in 1992, the Awards attract an audience of well over 600 to witness the UK’s top clubs all vying for these exclusive accolades. From sports clubs and social clubs to political clubs and working men’s clubs, the breadth of this hard-to-reach sector is astonishing – thus the importance of Club Mirror and its Awards. From a supplier’s or sponsor’s point of view, the Club Awards can help a brand develop a high value in a sector that is truly independent, with no head office or central purchasing telling them what to stock. The club sector is the largest sector of the independent on-trade and is worth an estimated £5bn in wet sales alone. We can help unlock that potential at our club events by offering an audience of the key buyers from the very best UK clubs.

Also attending the event were NEC members Geoff Blakeley CMD, Carol Goddard, Dave Gravel CMD, Les Hepworth CMD, Chris O’Neill CMD and Bob Russell CMD as well as former Union General Secretary Kevin Smyth and, from race sponsor Dransfields, Managing Director

Kenneth D Green CMD added: “Many thanks to all of the Union members who came along to Wetherby Racecourse to support what is the biggest date in the CIU’s sporting calendar. “On behalf of the Union, I would like to thank both Wetherby Racecourse and their caterers CGC for providing our members with a very enjoyable day out and for the donations to the Union’s Education Programme. “We also thank Heineken UK for providing money-off vouchers at the John Smith’s bar in the CIU Marquee. “We must also express our gratitude to Dransfields for their continued support as title sponsors of this annual event.”

Don’t miss out on a fantastic day of jump racing and fun in November Tickets are now available for the annual Dransfields CIU National Charity Raceday which takes place on Saturday, November 16 at Wetherby Racecourse. This is one of the highlights of the CIU’s sporting calendar with clubs from all over the country heading to Yorkshire to enjoy a superb day’s hospitality in the Union’s exclusive CIU Marquee adjacent to the racetrack. It’s also a bumper day for charity with the event raising over £35,000 for the CIU’s chosen charities since it started at Wetherby in 2006, with both Wetherby Racecourse and their catering partner CGC Events Ltd donating £1 from every CIU package sold. Jonjo Sanderson, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course at Wetherby Racecourse, is certainly looking forward to welcoming Union members to the venue in 2019: “Dransfields CIU National Charity Raceday is always a special fixture in the Wetherby calendar and this year is no exception with attendees guaranteed to enjoy some top-class sporting action and hospitality in the CIU Marquee next to the Paddock,” he said.

This month’s Club of the Month is Radford Social Club in Coventry. Earlier this year, the club marked its centenary with a full week of special celebratory events, including a gala dinner, an inter-club games tournament and a Gin and Prosecco Night. The club is renowned for its live entertainment and many big names have performed there over the years. To read the full article on the club, see pages 11-12.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has launched a new online portal for mutual societies. Societies that sign up to the portal will be able to submit applications and annual returns directly to the FCA online, instead of sending them by email or post. The portal is designed to provide an easier and more convenient way to make applications, and is also expected to improve the annual returns process. The FCA is encouraging all societies to sign up, if possible, as the portal is designed to provide a faster, easier, more convenient experience for societies. Societies can enter information directly into the portal instead of having to download forms and save them on a computer. It is also possible to save a partly completed application and come back to it later. There will also be less information to enter than with the old FCA forms. The FCA also says that the portal will give societies better access to their registration documents as societies will be able to simply log in and access recently registered documents.
