WELCOME TO BLACKPOOL by George Dawson CMD, Union President

Welcome to Blackpool and our 152nd annual conference where delegates will once again get their opportunity to influence the future of their club and CIU clubs as a whole. In addition to the Annual Meeting, the Union’s 24th Beer & Trades Exhibition will also be taking place at our new conference venue – the Norbreck Castle Hotel. This is a chance for delegates to talk business with the CIU’s National Accounts and club suppliers as well as network with new and old friends. On Saturday afternoon, immediately following the Conference, there’s also the Dransfields CIU National Quiz Final to look forward to as the Union’s top quiz aficionados compete for the prestigious CIU quiz title. The past 12 months has continued to see the Union meet various challenges head-on, not least in adding our considerable weight to the successful campaign to persuade the Chancellor to cut beer duty for the second consecutive year – a welcome development for all our clubs. (By the time you read this, hopefully this will be a hat trick!) Our voice continues to be heard at the highest levels of Government on this and other key issues with the Union taking the lead on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for NonProfit Making Members’ Clubs which meets every quarter at the House of Commons. Another important step has been our decision to re-engage with PRS. We’re in the process of negotiating a special rate for clubs and will

update members on the progress and advise on tariffs and opportunities. Elsewhere, we have undertaken a detailed look at our Education system and as a result we are piloting the introduction of a new accredited examination as well as online learning, something which we believe will be of immense benefit to our member clubs. The re-launches of both our magazine Club Journal and our website have also taken place over the past year, with increased revenue streams secured for the CIU and also much-improved products. Looking forward, we are revising our guidance to clubs working on drafting up new contracts for club employees as well as updating our Club Secretaries Handbook. 3

BIGGER AND EVEN BETTER! by John Tobin, Union Vice-President

As Vice-President it is my happy responsibility to welcome you all to the 24th annual Beer &Trades Show. The show officially falls under my remit and it’s a great pleasure to be at the centre of yet another exciting CIU event. This year the venue is even bigger, even better with even more exhibitors. And with prizes and Free Prize Draws – even a bingo session courtesy of Dransfields! – the show will be as exciting as it is informative.

part of the mix, and - tied in with those lagers, ciders and ales! – cellar gas as well. And for clubs looking for financial advice, we’re delighted to let you know that the Co-op Bank will be on hand to discuss money matters. With your club’s energy bills cut, your insurance secured and your furnishings up to scratch, the cellar working perfectly and your finances in order, the next ‘big thing’ is of course how to keep members coming back for more.

Taking time out of busy schedules is always a challenge for club officials, but I think I can safely say that it will be well worth the time spent.

Entertainment is of course key, and longstanding partner Dransfields will be joining us with their latest machines and advice on how to make the most of them. Dransfields is kindly giving away a FREE state-of-the-art TV as well as running bingo sessions.

Our carefully selected exhibitors all put clubs high on their agenda. As a result, they are keen to offer all the help and advice they can on making club business ever better, and they’ll be ready to field all your questions and concerns.

Sport is of course a common driver for all clubs, and Sky will be much in evidence. They have, they tell me, some surprises in store, so watch this space!

The show itself will undoubtedly provide food for thought and – of course – the beer festival is an attraction in its own right, run with the help of our friends at CAMRA. New brews and old favourites will be there, so maybe you’ll find new additions to the club bar? Advice from our preferred suppliers on sport, energy, insurance and furnishings will all be 4

Finally, I’d just like to say how very much I’m looking forward to welcoming old friends and new to this exciting new event in its new location. The Beer & Trades Exhibition truly is a unique networking opportunity with our clubs and suppliers under one roof, sharing learnings, experiences and expert advice. (And I hope I win the telly!)

SHAPING THE UNION’S FUTURE by Kenneth D Green CMD, General Secretary

It has been a new era for me since I became General Secretary in September of last year and I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the Union in my new capacity. It has been a real privilege to be able to visit so many clubs across the country and see at first hand the hard work, dedicated service and community spirit that running any successful club requires. This is my first year at the Annual Meeting as General Secretary and I look forward to meeting club folk from the length and breadth of the country as we come together under one roof in Blackpool to voice our opinions and shape the future for both our clubs and the Union itself. Of course, you will remember that the question of whether the Union needed the role of General Secretary was debated vigorously at last year’s Conference. Our members decided that there was a need for the position of General Secretary and, having been duly voted in, I’m determined to work my socks off for the benefit of our clubs. Part of my role is involved in the Union’s Education programme, one of the cornerstones of the CIU’s services. Having passed my CMD back in 1991, something which has stood me in good stead ever since, I’m passionate about encouraging more Union members to have the chance to benefit from the programme and equip themselves with the necessary knowledge to 6

run clubs profitably and efficiently. To this end, we are reviewing and updating the Union’s education offering, including a new Award in Managing Qualifying Clubs, full details of which we will release in the near future. I’m looking forward to attending the expanded Beer & Trades Exhibition on the Friday before Conference and meeting up with National Accounts and suppliers. There is also the Dransfields CIU National Quiz taking place on Saturday afternoon in the Boston Room of the Norbreck Castle Hotel once the business of the Annual Meeting has concluded. Don’t forget to register for this free event if your club wants to take part (registration form on page 11). I hope you enjoy Blackpool 2015!

CIU DRANSFIELDS NATIONAL QUIZ This year’s CIU National Quiz Final takes place in Blackpool on the afternoon of the Annual Meeting Following discussions, it was felt that as Conference and the associated trade show are the highlight of the CIU year, we should all put even more effort into making the Blackpool event action-packed. As a result, we are delighted to announce that the CIU’s Dransfields Quiz final will be held on the afternoon of the Conference – April 11, 2015. This means that all clubs will be fast-tracked straight to the final (i.e. no regional heats needed). Entry is free to all now, so any cheques previously received for entry to the quiz have been destroyed. THE CIU: CONSTANTLY EVOLVING It may have been established in the Victorian era but the Union continues to modernise its services and make itself as relevant as ever in the 21st century Education The Union’s Club Management Diploma (CMD) and residential Club Law and Club Finance weekends give officials the chance to learn everything they need to know to run their clubs with maximum efficiency. The CMD was established in 1934 and members of affiliated clubs with current Associate and Pass Cards can take part. Lessons are sent monthly and cover club law, administration, book-keeping and accountancy. March saw the latest Club Law and Club Finance Weekend taking place at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry with the assembled members enjoying a series of lectures over three days and many of them will use the knowledge gained there when they come to take their CMD exams in May. Sports & Games The Union is one of the biggest organisers of sporting competitions in the country with more than 2,000 trophies valued at around £500,000 being competed at both a national and Branch level. To take part a person must be at least 18 and also be a member of the club they represent. They must also hold a Union Associate and Pass Card issued by that club. Union President George Dawson and Linda Riordan MP get to grips with two key Heineken brands at a trade event in Halifax last year

Heineken UK appointed as Preferred Supplier to CIU Heineken UK has extended its relationship with the CIU after being reappointed as joint Preferred Supplier of beers and ciders to the Union. This new agreement with Heineken UK will run alongside the recently announced deal between the CIU and Carlsberg UK. Union President George Dawson welcomed the new agreement: “We are delighted to have extended our relationship with Heineken UK as joint Preferred Supplier of beers and ciders to the Union and look forward to working with them to both parties’ mutual business benefit,” he said. Andrew Turner, On-Trade Category & Trade Marketing Director at Heineken, said: “We are proud to be putting John Smith’s back at the heart of clubland and once again working with the CIU.” Union General Secretary Ken Green added: “The CIU and Heineken have built

up a long-standing relationship over a number of years and a great number of our clubs have benefited and will continue to benefit from the impressive business support offered to them by Heineken representatives, as well as from the company’s knowledge of the club sector.” Heineken UK supplies some of the country’s most high-profile drinks brands including John Smith’s, Foster’s, Kronenbourg 1664, Bulmers and Strongbow. Many clubs have recently installed Heineken’s new SmartDispense system which aims to save energy and reduce wastage while improving quality, margins and sales. Heineken UK will be exhibiting the SmartDispense system as well as showcasing their range of brands at the 24th Beer & Trades Exhibition in Blackpool on Friday April 10 alongside many of the Union’s other Preferred Suppliers.
