Congratulations

Welcome to a very special issue of Club Mirror, where those of you who weren’t able to join us at the 2016 Awards can experience it through snapshots and sound bites from the evening, held in Manchester on November 26. Our finalists and winners represented the best of the best, proving that clubs continue to provide a haven for their members, with a safe and welcoming environment in which to socialise with like-minded people. Resourceful and innovative, they are growing their business, with entertainment a key factor in bringing in new and existing members alike. The universal engagement with sport across the club sector continues to escalate – whether that’s playing it or watching it. And with Sport England reporting a significant rise in people participating in sporting activity, clubs will be playing an ever more important role here. Another universal truth amongst clubs is the commitment to helping others less fortunate than themselves. Charities benefit tremendously from clubs, who, without exception, raise funds for good causes, large and small. Our 2016 finalists and winners have raised over £1 million for charity between January and November this year. In short, there can be no doubt that all of those clubs, gathered together under that one roof on that one night, proved yet again that clubs are pivotal to the social fabric of this country. Now, more than ever, clubs are proving to be at the heart of the community and we’re proud to have been working together to help secure this position for the past 48 years. Next year? Our collective determination will be even stronger. Congratulations to each and every club reading this – finalist or not – for always being there for your members and your communities. Here’s to a very happy new year to all our readers.

Lords Committee to Quiz Government ministers on Licensing Act As Club Mirror went to press, two Government ministers were due to be quizzed on December 13 about whether laws on licensing and alcohol sales are working, in the final evidence session of a Lords inquiry. Sarah Newton MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Vulnerability, Safeguarding and Countering Extremism, Home Office, and Nicola Blackwood MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for

Public Health and Innovation, Department of Health, were both to give evidence to the Lords Committee on the Licensing Act 2003. Over the last six months, the Committee’s inquiry has heard evidence claiming that: • The licensing committee system is failing and should be aligned on planning. • Appeals should no longer go to magistrates’ courts.

• Legislation hasn’t kept pace with a huge growth in off-trade and online sales.

• Minimum unit pricing would be an effective control on alcohol abuse. • Loopholes in the law are likely to lead to serious alcohol-related issues at airports. • The night-time economy is skewed against local residents. CIU President George Dawson CMD gave evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on November 22 regarding how the licensing system is working for clubs.

Club Associations come Marston’s invests together to celebrate £1million in brands Marston’s brewery has launched a new campaign to update the image of its products. The fresh and contemporary rebranding was showcased at Club Mirror’s Hail the Ale Beer Festival on November 24 in Manchester. Lee Williams, marketing manager for Marston’s Brewery, said: “The harsh reality is that as a brewer, we’re not resonating with the next generation of drinkers who are attracted to the authenticity and simplicity of the new beer scene. For them it’s real and it resonates. “We need the next generation to

consider our beers, perhaps for the first time and discover that they love the taste too – just as generations before have done and still do.” Marston’s is investing more than £1 million over the next 12 months on new look of the range, which includes the iconic Marston’s Pedigree and the newly created 61 Deep, including new packaging, pump clips and POS material.

Club Associations from across the UK joined Club Mirror at an exclusive VIP Champagne reception before the 2016 Club Awards commenced. They were joined by the Barclays

Carlsberg UK launches DraughtMaster

Golf Club Management training course

Carlsberg UK has launched an innovative beer dispense solution for bars and food-led outlets called DraughtMaster. The compact solution enables outlets with limited space available the chance to stock premium lager and craft beer of consistent high quality. DraughtMaster requires only water, a power supply, drainage and space for installation, usually within the bar or drinks service area. 6 CLUB MIRROR

universally excellent, and we are seeing no decline in golf club managers’ appetite to learn, so we look forward to the next 25 years!” • www.gcma.org.uk

STOP PRESS… Following enquiries by the CIU, the Financial Conduct Authority has confirmed that Annual Return forms AR40 and AR41 are no longer being posted out to clubs as in previous years. Clubs will need to download the forms from the FCA website. This affects Working Men’s Clubs registered under the Friendly Societies Act 1974.

UK clubs celebrate success at Club Mirror’s 25th Club Awards Clubs across Britain have been recognised at the Club Awards for the pivotal role they play in the UK. The Awards, now in their 25th year, were held on 24 November in Manchester and were hosted by sports and TV personality Sally Nugent, with trophies presented by club-supporting sponsors and industry associations. Clubs were applauded for their many attributes across 28 categories, from championing grass roots sports activities and building entertainment programmes, to growing their membership and improving their facilities. Clubs were also congratulated for raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity across the year. “Against a backdrop of cheap supermarket drink, local pub closures and harsh trading conditions, clubs across the country have worked incredibly hard this year to constantly improve and provide a great offering for members. And they’re succeeding,” said Club Mirror Editor and Head Judge Caroline Scoular. For further news on the UK’s only panindustry club awards, turn to pages 2867.

HOSPITALITY SOCIAL MEDIA AWARDS 2016

Hospitality Social Media Awards

The first ever Hospitality Social Media Awards (HSMA) took place on Wednesday November 23, 2016 in Manchester. The only pan sector Awards saw clubs, pubs, hotels and restaurants showing how social media is making a real difference to their business and to the sector as a whole.

S

ocial media is one of the biggest tools for the on-trade in all its guises. It allows outlets to reach out to customers, members and potential customers via an up-to-the minute – and extremely cost-effective – means of communication. Most importantly it’s proving one of the most effective weapon in drawing the great British Public out of their homes and into the hospitality arena in all its many guises. The Awards were launched to encourage and applaud this, with finalists across all areas of the hospitality industry, from football and rugby clubs to hotels, pubs and restaurants, coming under one roof to share successes and learnings. “Every one of our finalists is clearly an ambassador for the use of social media,” said Sean. “But there are many, many outlets that need more help. And we’re hoping that these success stories will become part of that inspiring process.”

HQ NEWS FROM HQ

BUILDING THE BUSINESS

This month HQ plugs into two very important associations and their discussions on key club issues – from updates on the House of Lords Select Committee on the Licensing Act 2003 and the proposed amalgamation of PRS and PPL to Linewebber, the Small Business Rate Review and a call to make clubs exempt from the ‘making tax digital’ initiative.

CORCA meeting raises key issues CORCA (the Committee of Registered Clubs Association) met at the Carlton Club, London, for the final meeting of 2016. The meeting covered much ground and important club topics which we share here. Chaired by Lord Smith CBE, Chief Executive of Association of Conservative Clubs, the meeting welcomed representatives from the Club & Institute Union (CIU), Association of British Clubs (ABC), Association of Conservative Clubs (ACC), the Association of London Clubs (ALC), Royal Naval Association (RNA) and the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation. (CISWO). Apologies were accepted from the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) and the Northern Ireland Federation (NIFed).

House of Lords Select Committee on Licensing Act 2003 The CORCA Chairman updated the meeting on work undertaken to date by the House of Lords Select Committee. The Committee is expected to conclude business by the end of 2016 and publish its findings by March 2017. Some club groups/organisations would be called to give evidence to the Select Committee. It is, therefore, too early to confirm outcomes at this stage. The review has highlighted among many themes, the change in the leisure and social industries in the UK over the last decade. Off-sales premises have increased by 17.5% and off-sales now account for the largest market share. Clubs have been impacted by the sale of alcohol in supermarkets and online sites such as Amazon.

APPG – Parliamentary Reception It was proposed by the CIU that a second Parliamentary Reception is held in February 2017. The CORCA Group agreed CIU’s recommendation for the reception to be held jointly with other All Party Parliamentary Groups eg; beer, smoking, wines/spirits. CORCA – APPG Recruitment CORCA member groups agreed to look at approaching MPs and to outline the work of the CORCA and APPG groups. Gambling Commission Consultation The CIU reported that the Union had been notified that there was a delay in the consultation exercise. PRS/PPL The CIU had taken the lead in establishing the existing JMC tariff and so will resist any potential changes to the current agreement and the amalgamation of PRS and PPL. It was agreed that clarification is needed on the proposed timeline and the legality of merging both organisations. HMRC/RANK – Linewebber An update was given to the meeting, but it was not felt by the CORCA group that there will be a positive outcome to this appeal. Small Business Rate Review Now small business rate relief thresholds are increasing substantially, and the revaluation of rateable value on evidence to date looks positive for clubs, reputable firms currently undertaking this work seem less interested in doing so. It was stressed that clubs seeking assistance should only use those reputable organisations recognised by the CORCA group. FCA – Annual Returns The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA ) has ceased to send to each club an Annual Return to be completed and returned, as in previous years. Following enquiries by the CIU, the FCA confirmed that Annual Return forms (AR40 & AR41) are no longer being posted out but need to be downloaded from the FCA website. All those present agreed to notify their clubs of this important change.

20 CLUB MIRROR

Call to make clubs exempt from the‘making tax digital’ initiative T

he CIU has given its official response to the six consultation documents issued by HM Revenue and Customs regarding the ‘Making Tax Digital’ (MTD) initiative. In the response, Union President George Dawson CMD, states: “The purpose of this letter is to ask that due consideration is given to ourselves, our members and to similar club organisations to be explicitly exempted from the proposals for Making Tax Digital.” He continues: “We believe that MTD will not work for the CIU or for Working Men’s Clubs and for similar organisations. “It is our view that very few WMCs currently operate their book-keeping records by computer and they traditionally prepare their primary and secondary records through the use of hand written books of account, all of which are individually recognisable and are reasonably well understood. The hand written records are considered relatively easy when there is a requirement to show some-

one else how to take over the recording of bookkeeping information. “Many clubs currently pay fees and get help from their accountants in the completion of the above returns. For corporation tax purposes, many clubs do not incur a liability because of mutuality and therefore do not routinely file a return. “Most of those who do need to file returns for corporation tax because of investment income or gains use their accountants to prepare and electronically file returns annually, shortly after the annual accounts are prepared and approved. In most cases, any tax due is for very modest sums. “With regard to the other returns, many WMCs have developed systems to file returns electronically through their own manual book-keeping records which are summarised by the accountants and recorded onto their accountants’ computers for submission as agents.

“Many clubs do not, therefore, have their own computers (or tablets or smartphones) and also do not have any accounting software. As a result they are digitally excluded and would need to incur significant costs for hardware, software and training with no direct benefit to the management or success of the business.” The letter also explains the committee structure of clubs and points out that: “Many of the individual members of the committee do not have the knowledge, expertise or skills to use computers or the internet. Indeed, many will not understand the proposed MTD system and it is likely that the requirement to validate the tax account on a quarterly interval will not be carried out properly. “This will make MTD unsuitable and unworkable or perhaps will place greater responsibility onto the club’s financial officers who may also not have the required skills.”

Presenting – art or science? I

n less than a minute an audience – of whatever size – forms impressions of you and your credibility based on what you say and how you say it, according to Matt Abrahams at boldecho.com. That’s probably a worrying statistic for those not adept at presenting and who don’t enjoy it. Most speakers – upward of 85% – report being nervous when presenting. Managing this anxiety is key to confident and compelling delivery. Rather than get anxious over your nervous symptoms, greet your anxiety as a normal, reasonable response to delivering a presentation. Three common pitfalls that perpetuate a perceived lack of confidence: 1. Perfectionism – setting incredibly high and often unattainable standards Result: Paralysis due to fear of all the possible things that could go wrong Management technique: Create and enact contingencies. 2. PowerPoint etc – confusing a slide deck for a presentation (the illusion of progress). Result: Too much time spent designing slides rather than structuring and practicing.

Management technique: Develop an outline and practice delivery prior to adding aids. 3. Procrastination – choosing to put off work Result: Greater anxiety during ‘crunch time’ and less practice time. Management technique: Publicly commit to a schedule and reward yourself.

All of these steps will help to influence your audience’s perceptions, and you can take active steps to becoming a credible, authentic and compelling presenter.

INDUSTRY INTERVIEW

Awordwith

JOHN TOBIN – CLUBLAND CV 1963 – At 21 joined the Crownhill Sports & Social Club in London.

John Tobin John Tobin is a club man through and through. Not only is he Vice-President of the CIU, he is also President elect of RBL Crowthorne, was Secretary of Crownhill Sports & Social Club for 40 years, and a life member of both Wealdstone Social Club and the Trades Club. The busy club man takes time out to share his thoughts on the future of clubland.

Like so many of us, it was my Dad, an engineer, who first introduced me to clubs. The minute I hit 21 he signed me up as a member of his club, the Crownhill Sports & Social Club in London. That was in 1963. From the off I was keen to get more involved with the club’s fortunes, and in 1966 I joined the committee, becoming Assistant Club Secretary in 1967 and then Club Secretary in 1970 – a post I was proud to hold for over 40 years. I’m truly passionate about the role that clubs have in their communities and it’s been a mission of mine to keep them firmly at the centre of the action. I knew very quickly that the CIU was the vehicle to help and that it shared these ambitions for its mem-

bers. I was therefore very proud to be elected as a Branch Secretary of the North West Met Branch in 1978 and then onto the National Executive in 1980 to represent my area.

1966 – Joined the committee. 1967 – Became Assistant Club Secretary. 1970 – Became Club Secretary at the club – a post he was proud to hold for over 40 years. 1978 – Elected as a Branch Secretary of the North West Met Branch. 1980 – Elected onto National Executive – with numerous roles. 2008 – Elected as CIU Vice-President. OTHER ACTIVITIES 1986 - 2002 – Parish Council, District and County Council activities Charity Work – Wokingham charities including sheltered accommodation (trustee since 1986) and 14 years as President. President of Rotary since 2014. Vice President of RBL Crowthorne (President Elect for 2017). Treasurer of Probus. Life member – Wealstone Social Club. Life member – Trades Club.

Role in the CIU As you’ll see from my CV within these page, I’ve sat on nearly every committee there is and worked in almost every part of the CIU – sitting on the Ginance team, The Journal Board and Education as well as lecturing at CIU ‘schools’ and branches. In addition I’m involved with the APPG [the All Party Parliamentary Group] meetings in the House of Commons and on CORCA [the Committee of Registered Clubs Associations].

One of the most fascinating insights I rememeber was when I sat on a community clubs committee which travelled to Germany to see how their clubs are run over there. They excelled at running community clubs. Where they differed from the CIU - which is self-funding – was in that they received council funding if they had a sports link. A great help and a great incentive. On education Education and training has been a particular focus of my CIU role (I’ve been involved with the Education Group for the past 14 years). For me, this is one of the most important reason clubs

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Top three wishes from this Government for clubs? Overhaul the Licensing Act 2003; support clubs and communities; subsidise business rates. View on Brexit I was for staying in, but I accept the democratic process – and long may democracy be maintained. Now we just need to get on with it.

should join the CIU – and that goes for all clubs across the board of all shapes, sizes and types. We’re no longer just Working Men’s Clubs and I’d like Club Mirror readers to know that and get on board. We all know from experience just how much work it takes to run a successful club, and it’s our duty as an association to give whatever help and advice we can to help make that happen. We also know how time-poor many club officials are, and we’ve seen a fall in the number of people taking the Club Managers Diploma (CMD) as a result. Needless to say this has worried us a great deal – club officials really do need to be equipped with the skills to make their clubs run profitably. If you asked me what my top three tips are for running a successful and motivated club it would be to have a good and honest committee, to be family orientated (so that the next generation of club members come to fruition) and to undertake training in all parts of the club to secure the club’s future.

Who would you award an OCE (Order of the Club Empire) to? Jack Ellis – Leeds Branch Secretary and an NEC member. He took me under his wing when I first joined the NEC. Where were you born? Harlesden, London. First job? I started in sales at Smiths Industry before two stints at Rolls Royce. After that I dedicated my time and life to club life in a variety of roles. Biggest influence in your working life? My wife Janet who has supported me throughout my working life. Also my three daughters who’ve been brought up around clubs and club life.

Shouting the club message As well as running the clubs, though, we all need to shout about them and make sure our voice is heard collectively which is a big part of our remit. We represent our members – as well as the club sector as a whole – at the APPG meetings in the House of Commons and with CORCA. Club conference The CIU annual meeting is now in its 153rd year another thing we should really shout about. And alongside that we run the Beer & Trades Exhibition, now in its 25th year. As Vice President, I’m lucky enough to be in charge of inviting our National Executive and special guests to the preconference dinner. I also really enjoy getting to open the trade show where we welcome all of our preferred suppliers and club members. This is now my eight year as Vice President and I’ve just celebrated my 50th year as a club man! Postive signs for clubland There are plenty of positives being witnessed at the moment, with committees changing how they work and think, all building towards a more inclusive and

more dynamic future. Many clubs are becoming more family orientated, securing the next generation of members, and as we’ve seen from successful pubs, food is a key for going forward. On the unsuccessful pubs who continue to close their doors, clubs have been picking up their dropped baton and welcoming their bereft customers as new members. It’s another changing dynamic and forward-looking clubs are delighted to welcome this.

What gadgets couldn’t you live without? All gadget – I love them all! Favourite foods? Fillet steak, fish, chicken, fruit, ice cream. Favourite tipple after a busy day? Brandy – ideally a Courvoisier – or an ale. I’m quite partial to Brakspear Ordinary.

LIVE SPORTING FIXTURES FROM

The best of January’s live sport Saturday January 7, 12.30pm – BT Sport 2 HD

FA Cup: 3rd round Manchester United v Reading Manchester United have won the FA Cup a staggering 11 times during their illustrious history and would love to make it 12. However, there is a long way to go before they can realise the dream and Championship side Reading will be going all out to knock their opponents out of this prestigious competition or force a lucrative replay at the Madejski Stadium.

Sports4Bars.com looks ahead to the biggest sporting fixtures coming up in January.

Saturday January 7 12.30pm BT Sport 2 HD

International Cricket: ODI - India v England

Can Reading pull off one of the biggest shocks in recent FA Cup history and knock out Manchester United at Old Trafford?

England endured a pretty harsh Test series against India before Christmas but now have the chance to make amends in the one-day version of the game.

FA Cup: 3rd Round - Cambridge United v Leeds United

Sunday January 15, 9pm – Sky Sports 2 HD

International Cricket: ODI India v England England begin their one-day international series against India with a game at Pune. This will be a tough challenge for the tourists given the allround strength of their opponents. Indeed, the last ODI series between the two nations, in the summer of 2014 on English soil, resulted in India winning the series 3-1. England will have to counter the devastating India bowling attack to have any chance of winning this series.

More action from the third round of the fabled FA Cup competition as Cambridge United host Leeds United. Leeds last won the FA Cup in the 1971-72 season. Saturday January 14 12.30pm Sky Sports 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Tottenham v West Bromwich Spurs continue to be an exciting force in the Barclays Premier League and their new three-man defensive system appears to be working really well. The Londoners would expect to beat the Baggies at this stage of the season.

Tuesday January 31, 8pm – BT Sport 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Liverpool v Chelsea This will be a fascinating tactical battle between two title hopefuls but it is probably Chelsea who have the upper hand on recent form. Their mean defence has neutered many an attacking team and they will be on their guard against an enterprising Liverpool team. The fixture between the sides back in September was certainly a fascinating game as Liverpool recorded a rare win at Stamford Bridge, beating their opponents by 2-1. Chelsea will be out for revenge at Anfield as they seek to cement their place at the top of the table.

Saturday January 14 5.30pm BT Sport 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Leicester City v Chelsea Leicester City have enjoyed mixed fortunes this season and while they will not be repeating their title win this time around, they still have the ability to play some devastating attacking football, particularly when striker Jamie Vardy is on song as he has been in recent weeks.

Championship: Leeds United v Derby County Saturday January 14 5.30pm Sky Sports 1 HD

Championship: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Thursday January 26 1.30pm Sky Sports 2 HD

Sunday January 15 1.30pm Sky Sports 1 HD

International Cricket: ODI India v England

Barclays Premier League: Everton v Manchester City A North West battle which will not be a formality for the star-studded City side. Everton are a very welldrilled team and can be extremely dangerous from the set-piece.

Sunday January 22 2.15pm Sky Sports 1 HD

Saturday January 21 5.30pm BT Sport 1 HD

Saturday January 28 3pm BT Sport 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Manchester City v Tottenham

Barclays Premier League: Arsenal v Burnley

Anglo-Welsh Cup Rugby: Leicester Tigers v Northampton Saints

One of the games of the month as United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford. There will be huge hype ahead of this match, most of it surrounding the respective managers Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp.

City manager Pep Guardiola has steadfastly maintained that he will need time to build his team into a world-class force and so it has proved with a number of disappointing results in recent weeks. Spurs have also experienced major inconsistencies in their performances to date but a win at the Etihad would go some way to setting them up for a good run in the second half of the season.

Burnley had a bright start to their season and continue to battle away to avoid the dreaded relegation zone. One of their best performances in recent months was the impressive 3-2 win over Bournemouth but Arsenal will present a challenge of a far greater magnitude, particularly at the Emirates.

An East Midlands derby in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. While several frontline players are likely to be rested for this encounter, this will present an opportunity for some up and coming stars so expect a fierce encounter between two historical rivals both intent on gaining some silverware this season.

Saturday January 21 12.30pm BT Sport 1 HD

Sunday January 22 9am Sky Sports 2 HD

Sunday January 15 4pm Sky Sports 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Manchester United v Liverpool

Barclays Premier League: Liverpool v Swansea City Liverpool will continue to battle to be in the reckoning for the title and in Adam Lallana have one of the most dangerous attacking forces in the English game. Unfortunately, the Liverpool defence is not quite as dazzling.

Barclays Premier League: Chelsea v Hull City Chelsea have surged up the table in the first half of the season and show no signs of relinquishing their half grip on the Barclays Premier League trophy. Antonio Conte has breathed new life tactically into the team with the result that the Blues pulled ahead of their rivals in the table and set their sights on the trophy.

Tuesday January 31 8pm BT Sport 1 HD

Barclays Premier League: Liverpool v Chelsea The year ends with a bang as Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Anfield for a game which could have far-reaching consequences for both sides. If the Blues can win here they will be buoyed with huge confidence ahead of 2017 and will have all the momentum in their favour. A Liverpool win would be a major filip for Klopp’s team.

Judges’ comments: Boothstown RBL, founded in 1940, has a membership of 400 and the club is busy growing that figure in the community. “It’s been going well,” says Steward Kenny Bailey. “Turnover has increased and there’s been a steady increase in membership. We’ve done a few more refurbishments to the club as well this year; we’re updating it all the time.” Charity events prove popular as does the annual festival. The club also has snooker, darts and dominoes teams, and is proud of fostering its community spirit.

We also had a charity draw on Boxing Day in aid of Cystic Fibrosis and raised £800,” says Treasurer Rod Fisher.

Judges’ comments:

“Since winning Golf Club of the Year at the Club Awards last year, we’ve used it as a marketing tool. It’s been put on our Facebook site and also on the club website and as a result of that, visiting parties have increased – up by 50 per cent on last year,” says Steward David Bayley. “We’ve got new team players in and we’re now even more professional than we were.” The club opened a new swing centre at the end of last year, hosted the Mackenzie Medallion, many tournaments and charity events, all with excellent feedback.

Stewards Ian & Joanne Bamford were nominated by Club Chairman Paul Hill for their success in helping to turn the club’s fortunes around, from a £20k deficit six years ago to a surplus this year. “We had no functions, so when the Bamfords arrived they opened up the function room, built stages for disco and live acts,” says Paul. “They also introduced food every lunchtime and increased the number of functions.” This has increased revenue and upped membership by 5% to 1300. The duo have also increased the number of real ales to 15.

As a result beer sales are up by 15% on last year. The couple manage to link this benefit into raising funds for charity. “We raise the money in a variety of ways. Shifnal Golf Club

Judges’ comments:

Kings Heath’s does an exceptional job when it comes to catering for its 700 members. A team of chefs prepare food fresh every day, from a full menu to bar snacks. There are monthly themed events for the Diners Club while Wednesday curry nights are well attended. The club is now the 2016 Birmingham CAMRA Club of the Year and holds four beer festivals a year. This year the club celebrated its 25th Burns Night with 150 attendees. “We invited people who were at the first one including the gentleman who started it,” says Club Manager Peter Hunt.

While Shifnal Golf Club is busy growing membership amongst women and encouraging a healthy Junior Section at the other end of the scale it is constantly re-examining its cost platform. With a large clubhouse, patio area, restaurant and busy bar – plus events throughout the year – energy bills had been rising along with the associated cost. After analysing the best route forward, the club invested £100,000 in a biomass boiler which runs from wooden pellets and solar panels. The result has been a huge reduction in energy levels and therefore in bills.

Judges’ comments: With 2,600 members, Cobham Sports & Social Club has seen a steady increase in membership this year as well as a leap in revenues. “One of our biggest successes has been the redevelopment of our bowling alley,” explains Manager Christopher Weight. “This wasn’t doing so well so we turned it into two American-style automated alleys with a diner. This has proved to be hugely popular especially with groups and children.” This initiative is now generating £400500 pounds extra income each week and the club is now serving an average of 2000 meals a week.

Tiverton Constitutional Club

Judges’ comments: Tiverton Constitutional Club in Devon is no stranger to winning Club Mirror Awards. The club continues to impress with its continued programme of improvements and efficiency drives. To tackle the bottom line, the club’s low energy bulbs have been replaced by LED bulbs which use just 10% of the energy of the previous bulbs. A further ambition to minimise the club’s carbon footprint is planned; when the outside furniture is replaced soon it will be with recycled plastic furniture.

Judges’ comments:

Judges’ comments:

When the club was bought in 2015 owner Mark Ellis and his team were determined to make Burghill Valley more than a run of the mill golf club. We have all sorts of member incentives,” says Jo Edgley, Marketing Manager. “Members can get their car serviced at a discount. They have reciprocal feeds with other courses. They have a deal with the local theatre whereby members can get discounted tickets. They have reciprocal deals with local gyms.” The result has been a tangible value to membership other than purely playing golf which has seen membership grow.

“The way we’ve marketed the club has changed,” says MD and owner Ken Wright. “In the past we’ve mainly plodded along but now have recruited a development and planning manager.” The club is finding new business, uses the same booking systems employed by restaurants and has broadened its offering. It has employed social media to great effect and is seeing 2000 hits daily on Facebook, leading to an increase of membership from 800 to 5000. The club’s turnover has increased just as dramatically with extra revenues coming in via these new members. It was also voted Time Out Best Bar and Club 2016. The site is easy to navigate, clean and user friendly, showcasing the club and all that it has to offer. With a full complement of social media tools – from Facebook and twitter to Pinterest and Instagram – the club has embraced all communications platforms.

Judges’ comments: When Jamie Morris became Chairman at the club he went back to basics, ensuring that all safety checks were done properly and that, with his wife as Treasurer, all the correct financial procedures were in place. Supported by Marston’s Beer Company, the club has now been able to refurbish the bar area, revamp the cellar, redecorate and install new lighting. “While 12 months ago we’d have only sold Carling, today we have three lagers, two bitters and one real ale, plus occasional guest ales,” says Jamie. “And there isn’t an inspection now that we wouldn’t pass!” Rob Hart, second from left, presents the trophy to the worthy winners on behalf of Club Control.

2017 CLUB AWARDS

OPEN FOR ENTRIES

Penn’s 15 bowling teams have had a good year with five players picked for the county team and two juniors picked for the junior county team. With bowling season running from Easter to September the club works hard to bring in members year round. Two beer festivals a year with 43 beers plus ciders, an increased number of guest beers at the bar and large investment in the catering operations have all helped to grow membership by 10% this year. “As a result of the improved catering, we’re now fully booked for Friday and Saturday nights,” says Roger Baker, Treasurer.

Judges’ comments: Founded 90 years ago and designed by the iconic James Braid, Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club has been revamping the clubhouse and is seeing the benefits. “Membership has increased because of the refurbishment,” says Marketing Manager John Walker. “The club hosted the British Boys Championships which gave the club a big boost and we’ve had an increase in ladies membership thanks to a big push there.”

Tennis Club Judges’ comments: Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis & Squash Club has an inclusive approach to building the club, for example, holding a club visioning event with 50 people and tackling the relationship between paid staff and volunteer committee members by devising a communication plan. Innovatively, committee members are engaged for two years and then source their own successor. The club has gone out into the community and runs successful coaching programmes, helping people to become more active. The club also managed to get an interest free grant from the LTA and has reduced its electricity bill through solar panels.

Judges’ comments: “The mini junior section of the club is thriving and going from strength to strength,” says Philip Foster, Operations Manager. “We’ve also tied in with St George’s Park and we’ve been using their training facilities once a week.” The club’s 15-18 year old ‘young ambassadors’ have been to Twickenham and represented the club, all of which has helped to increase membership, as has the promotion of the club via the website and visits to local schools. The club puts on live bands, has staged its first wedding, put on beer and BBQ festivals and hosted rallies bringing in several thousand guests.

Judges’ comments: Newport Rugby Club is on the up and up. Membership is on the increase and the club prides itself on being a caring, family friendly venue. It focuses on reaching out to the community and, with a 70th year anniversary coming up, is planning an open day with activities for all the family. The club doubles up as a nursery during the day, thereby getting youngsters involved from a young age and ‘signed up’ as members, with the parents gaining a ‘default membership.’ It holds lunches for the membership on Saturdays prior to games and fundraises for local causes.

Sally Nugent, far right, welcomes Newport Rugby Club on stage.

Cookley has two cricket fields, two football pitches, tennis courts, a multi-use games area, bowling green and screens both BT Sport and Sky Sports. The club launched a web site this year alongside Facebook. The response has been so vigorous that the club is now planning to build a large conservatory to allow for a capacity increase from 1,500 to 2,000. The club’s annual beer festival is a huge success and attracted around 9000 people this year, serving 46 different ales with live bands, and all recorded via a drone, viewable on YouTube. The club is planning a 2017 Party in the Park with 14 bands. ACP’s latest launch, Sports Club Management, presents Cookely Sports Club with their trophy.

Judges’ comments: “We’re very family orientated,” says Lesley Anderson, Club Stewardess. “We offer everything from senior citizen tea clubs and a kids’ play area to Zumba. We also have two football teams, a lads and dads club and a lads and dads senior team plus two snooker teams, three darts teams and four pool teams – this has helped bring people into the club who have become members.” The club has spent £100,000 on refurbishment and has introduced a new till system with a loyalty card – people collect points on their card and receive a free drink when it’s full.

Judges’ comments: Darts play an important part of club life at Marlow RBL taking place each Wednesday. These activities are promoted on the website, in the local press and on the local radio. As well as darts, traditional club activities include two crib teams, a Brass Band, tribute acts and singers, barn dances and Ukulele bands. Traditional lunchtime jazz and blues sessions, bingo ever Friday and quizzes are just some of the other activities available to the club’s darts players.

AON’s Alan McEwan presents the Sports & Social Club Award to the team from Willaston Sports & Social Club. CIU NEC member Ken Roberts CMD presents Marlow RBL with their trophy. (ACP is the proud publisher of the CIU’s monthly magazine, Club Journal).

West Byfleet Social Club

A successful Super League darts team drives the interest in darts activity at the club, which encourages members and guests to cheer on the participants. Darts events complement the snooker, billiards, pool and football teams, all helping to generate noise around this sporting club. The local press becomes involved when the club undertakes community and charity events, while the website, mail shots, leaflet drops and word of mouth all help to boost darts activities and all other elements of club events, including live music, bingo, bands and tribute acts which raise money for good causes.

Judges’ comments:

Founded in 1950, the Golden Diamond is 100% entertainment based and, from what was traditionally based on local talent, is now able to draw in acts from around the world as well as headlining regular bands and an 18-piece orchestra. “We’ve taken on a lot more commitments and attracted new people to the club,” says owner Gary Melvin. “We’ve broadened horizons in terms of the kind of acts that perform at the club and that’s bringing in a lot more customers and business as a result.” The club also has a Diner and is considering investing more in more cask.

The challenge for the BBC club has been engaging the younger generation, says chairman John Wingfield, particularly part-timers and freelances. “We had to find out what would make them join,” says John. “Our research found that younger people want more of an experience and that cost wasn’t an issue.” The club now puts on four big events each month. Gym members enjoy a free health check, free classes and personal training and the club holds seminars on mental wellbeing. A membership campaign is held each month and iPad areas in the club can be used to access club information. The club boasts 10,000 members. Dransfields Chris Haley accepts the trophy on behalf of The Golden Diamond team who were unable to attend.

Steward Paul Walton has been busy restructuring the business following the sad loss of his partner Denise (well known to Club Mirror). He has employed a full time office member who is tightening up the membership database. “We’ve now got an email facility where we mailshot everybody with what’s on,” says Paul. “And where the membership used to be renewed annually in May for everybody, we’ve now got the facility to take anybody on now and they renew on the anniversary of their joining day. Since then I haven’t had a month where the membership hasn’t increased.” Paul Walton, third from right, accepts the Award from ACP’s Sean Ferris, far left.

Judges’ comments: “We are a traditional London Working Men’s Club and are doing well against a lot of competition from pubs and other clubs in the area,” says David Brown, Club Secretary. “We’ve worked hard to ensure our membership has stayed steady and we’ve recently launched a Facebook page and a website to let everyone know about all the things we have going on.” Younger members are attracted by two full-size snooker tables, pool table, jukebox and live football on the big screen. “Our Concert Hall has been redecorated this year and that’s helped us to get more of an income from people hiring it for private parties,” says David.

Blakelaw & District Social Club Judges’ comments: Membership at Newcastle’s Blakelaw & District Social Club is up 15%, now reaching 1800, helped by a £90k refurbishment. This has all exponentially increased the amounts that members can collectively raise for charities, of which there are many. Amongst these are Hadrian’s School for Disabled Children (£5,000), Newcastle Families United a support network for parents, carers and families of children with disabilities (£5,000), Macmillan Nurses (£6,000), and St Oswald’s Hospice (£3,000). “We raise the money through charity shows with live music, discos, raffles and so on,” says Secretary Alan Campbell.

Judges’ comments: Hawthorne’s committee has embarked on a recruitment drive with a particular ambition to draw in younger members and families. Just over three years ago, the club went through tremendous changes (and was awarded Club Mirror’s Best Turnaround Club of the Year). Now, in a happily stable position, everything goes through the committee and is voted on democratically at meetings held every two weeks. A further Finance Committee meets monthly and ensures everything is running smoothly. “We were losing money, now we’re spending money and still having money to invest. I am proud about how well our committee has gone about improving our club,” says Roy Firbank, Trustee

A relatively young club, founded in 1994, Paul ensures that the club never rests on its laurels. David Giles

Northern Football Club Judges’ comments: General Manager David Giles has had a challenging 2016 thanks to government regulations which saw the club’s trading side and sporting side split into two separate entities. But the club is thriving under his tenure, with functions now so popular that the club is now passing on customers to the local cricket club. “The bars are very busy and we’ve been doing different themed food nights which are all extremely popular,” says David. The club has had a successful year on the pitches and the squash courts and non-playing members can enjoy their sport via BT Sport and Sky Sports. “We’re expanding all the time,” says David. Judges’ comments: Cobham Sports & Social Club is a worthy winner of the 2016 King of Clubs. This inclusive club strives to provide a breadth of activities which draws in membership from all age groups. It has embraced Facebook as a communications platform and is now in the happy position of having to build a conservatory to create enough space for the flood of new members. The club’s new American-style automated bowling alleys with a Diner are generating around £2,000 per month and food service has reached up to 8000 meals each month. The club’s other facilities include two bars, three function rooms, a BBQ area, BT Sport and Sky Sports and a members lounge. There’s no shortage of activities at the club, from pool, darts and bowls to football, golf (9-hole course) and shooting at the club’s rifle range.
