Happy birthday! This month we have lots of reasons to celebrate – the season of sporting spectaculars continues to inspire sports-mad members and Halloween (and Bonfire Night) will be firing up the imagination of others. More good news, and our friends at BT Sport are keen to welcome yet more readers to the Rugby Tonight studios for a recording of their popular magazine programme (see page 15 ). And as if that’s not enough, we’re adding our upcoming 50th Birthday amongst the many reasons to be cheerful. Join in Club Mirror’s celebrations in 2018 (see pages 18-19). Since the magazine was first launched in 1968, the industry has changed dramatically. But one thing’s for sure; throughout the decades clubs have continued to assert their independence. Each one is unique and each has a specific offering for their specific membership as this year’s Awards entries have proved yet again. To get a flavour of what just some of the finalists have been up to in their communities turn to pages 18-20. This individuality is only possible because as a sector, and by their nature, clubs remain untouched by takeovers and reverse takeovers, mergers and buyouts. As such, we continue to stand out against a homogenisation witnessed in other areas of the hospitality industry. Perhaps most importantly clubs continue to serve a unique function in the UK. They are at the heart of the community and encourage a sense of belonging which has a real impact on society. This is one thing that hasn’t changed. So here’s to the next 50 years. Cheers!

CLUB NEWS

Calls to minimise alcohol harms over festival period As clubs and bars gear up for the festive season, alcohol education charity Drinkaware is urging operators to take steps to minimise the risk of alcohol related harms in their venues. Drinkaware chief executive Elaine Hindal said: “Alcohol is part of the festive celebrations for many people and most will enjoy a drink or two responsibly, without causing any harm to themselves or others. “However, the sheer number of customers visiting pubs, clubs and bars at this busy time of year inevitably means a raised likelihood of alcohol harms. Responsible operators will want to create an environment that both helps customers to moderate their alcohol consumption, and supports those customers who might become vulnerable as a result of drinking too much. Drinkaware is offering help which includes downloadable posters and an e-learning course for staff.”

Drinkaware tips for reducing festive alcohol harms

• Stock a good selection of soft drinks for customers who choose not to drink alcohol. If customers have a choice of soft drinks, they are more likely to substitute them for an alcoholic drink once or twice during the evening, which will help to limit their overall alcohol consumption. • Include no or low alcohol options on your drinks list. Drinks that are low in alcohol don’t have to be low on taste and many brewers have focused on the lower alcohol sector lately, producing flavourful beers with lower ABVs. • Review your wine offer. Choosing house wines that sit at the lower end of the ABV scale will help many customers to reduce their alcohol intake. Similarly, offer wine in a 125ml serve and make customers aware this size is available. • Serve food for the same hours as you

serve drink, or as close as possible. Food slows the absorption of alcohol, so customers are less likely to become vulnerable as a result of drinking too much, too quickly. • Make it very clear that you will not serve alcohol to customers who are drunk, or who are attempting to buy for a drunken friend, both of which are against the law. Drinkaware and the British Beer & Pub Association have produced two posters to help communicate this to customers - ‘Can’t

Get Served’ and ‘Mate’s in a State’, which can both be downloaded from the Drinkaware website – www.drinkaware.co.uk Earlier this year, Drinkaware launched an Alcohol Vulnerability Awareness e-learning course to give customer-facing staff the skills and knowledge to identify alcohol-related vulnerability and support customers at risk from harm. The course costs £20 per team member. To find out more details email elearning@drinkaware.co.uk

Working in partnership on the film festival with Burton and South Derbyshire College, Marston’s Brewery are celebrating their 180-year association with Burton Upon Trent by creating an annual event that will draw interest in the town and celebrate its own local talent and craftsmanship. Jo Wyke, Marketing Manager from Marston’s said: “We hope that film makers respond to our competition from all corners of the UK, whether they are already in film making or are enthusiastic amateurs looking for some recognition. A home-grown talented film maker has the chance to win up to £2,500 in prize money – as well as the recognition for their skills.” • www.marstons.co.uk

The Wooden Spoon The Wooden Spoon supports disadvantaged and disabled children, all inspired by rugby roots – Passion, Integrity, Teamwork and Fun. Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby. From sensory rooms, specialist playgrounds and sports activity areas to respite, medical and community care, it funds around 70 projects each year that support disadvantaged and disabled children. Since being founded in 1983 it has distributed in excess of £24 million, helping over 1 million young people. When England hit the bottom of the

tournament table during the 1983 Five Nations Rugby Championship, five England supporters sought solace in a Dublin bar after witnessing a 25-15 defeat to Ireland at Landsdowne Road. There, they were presented – in good humour

– with a wooden spoon, wrapped in an Irish scarf and served on a silver platter. On that night, nowpresident Peter Scott resolved to hold a golf match to see who would have the honour of keeping the tongue-incheek gift. A few months later, the round at Farnham Golf Club in Surrey raised more than £8,500, with the money used to provide a new minibus for a local special needs school. And so Wooden Spoon was born. Club Mirror and Club Rugby are inviting readers to join the team at BT Sport’s London studio for a filming of Rugby Tonight. Rugby Tonight, BT Sport’s popular weekly rugby magazine show, is set to play host to rugby-mad readers from Club Mirror and sister magazine Club Rugby with presenter Sarra Elgen and former England players Austin Healey and Ben Kay welcoming the club guests. This follows on from the hugely successful screening earlier this year when the two titles took over the studios courtesy of Club Awards sponsor BT Sport. The event includes re-enactments, audience interviews, rugby chat in the studio’s Ruck & Maul pub and on-the-sofa discussions about up and coming matches.

CLUB AWARDS

Finalists to the fore The 2017 Club Awards take place on 30 November celebrating clubs of all types and sizes around the country. Here are seven clubs already through as finalists. Bitterne Conservative Club, Bitterne Finalist – Charity Club of the Year With nearly 1,100 members to please this 104 year old club puts on live music, quizzes, bingo, has a lending library, four snooker teams and two whist teams. Charity fundraising, however, is the reason they entered this year’s Club Awards, hoping to win the coveted Charity Club of the Year Award. Datchet Water Sailing Club, Datchet Finalist – Green Club of the Year

Barnard Castle WMC, Barnard Castle Finalist – Refurbishment Club of the Year “We’re really proud of what the club continues to achieve,” says Terry McKie, Chairman. “We’ve had the upstairs Function Room completely transformed. We've ripped out the main bar and put in a new one plus we have brand-new furniture throughout – tables and chairs – to give it a new look.

“We’ve had a lift installed to ensure that disabled members have full access to the club's facilities. We spent over £150,000 on the whole project but we are looking at it as a necessary investment in the club which will stand us in good stead for the future. It's already had a galvanising effect on membership as we've had new people hearing about the improvements and consequently wanting to join. “We have also put in a big screen for showing live sport, a new stage, black-out blinds and a brand-new kitchen area. “We received some great publicity in the local press after our Grand Opening over the summer and that has really boosted the profile of the club and created a bit of a buzz about the place.”

18 CLUB MIRROR

“We raised an enormous amount of money for charities last year – over £13,000 – the largest amount ever,” says the club’s Jim Gould. “Around £5,500 went to McMillan Nurses and £6,000 went to a children’s Hospice. We also used £1300 for a public access defibrillator for the community which is on the wall. “For Macmillan Nurses we held a big coffee morning and invited all the members and local community – there were stalls, people donated prizes, and a cake was auctioned off. We raised the rest of the money through the ladies’ craft club who made and sold items, raising £3,000. The Ladies line dancing club raised £700 and an inhouse lottery competition raised £1,800. Everyone gave 20p for a copy of the monthly club magazine, loose change in charity bottles and members of our club lending library put in money for borrowing books.”

Datchet Water Sailing Club is proud to be a member of the ‘Sustainable Clubhouse’ initiative. Gabrielle Boase CMD, General Manager at Datchet Water Sailing Club says: “We are fundamentally a green sport and we operate a green clubhouse at Datchet Water. Spreading the word about environmental impact and sustainability with our younger sailors and newcomers to the sport is helping to keep our waters clean and safe. Engaging with them also creates a long-lasting impact for the club by helping to ensure even more people make sailing part of their future.” The club has installed a heating system which uses the reservoir as a heat source and a water source heat pump (instead of oil or gas boilers) has reduced the club’s carbon footprint by a factor of over 3.4. The project falls under the Renewable Heat Incentive which means that the club is paid for the heat generation for the next 20 years. It also means that after repayments from OFGEN the club now receives more money than it spends on heating, while the excess electricity produced by the solar PV panels is used to power the heat pumps. The club has installed several eco-friendly measures such as double glazing and new energy-efficient radiators, solar panels for renewable energy, new boilers, roof insulation and a cooling system for the conference room. The insulated roof will help lower the building’s carbon footprint with an annual reduction of 21,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions. This is also the first club in the country to run a RYA educational initiative which aims to educate young children about the impact that sailing has on the environment – the Marine CSI Challenge – as part of the ‘Push the Boat Out’ scheme. The club works closely with Green Blue which is a joint environment initiative created by the British Marine Federation and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to encourage a more sustainable recreational boating sector.

Roehampton has a golf course, 30 tennis courts, squash courts, a gym, swimming pool and four croquet lawns. A £3.5m development has seen the outdoor heated swimming pool replaced to become more familyfriendly and open for 11 months of the year rather than six, and the gym and health club is being redeveloped, going from one to three studios and increasing in size to 150 square metres. “It’s very challenging keeping the club open during the building work,” says General Manager and CMAE President Marc Newey CCM CMD. “We’ve built a temporary gym in the piazza and a temporary studio in the gardens.” Families are attracted to the club’s tuition programme, says Newey: “When people join the club, they don’t just want to participate in a sport, they want to get better at it so we offer this extensive tuition programme for adults and kids. Our biggest sports are by far tennis and golf, although we offer squash and croquet.” In April the club opened 10 grass tennis courts and the club is proud that Wimbledon tennis stars use the club to practise on. It has 30 different courts with a variety of surfaces. The club has 18 tennis pros, eight golf pros and a golf course plus swimming pros. The club is also an international venue for croquet.

St James’s main restaurant (30 covers) has retained its Michelin star and 4 AA rosettes since 2009 and last year Food & Beverage revenues went up by 11%. But the club, founded in1857, is not about to rest on its laurels. Food & Beverage Manager Antonio Vigorito has introduced afternoon tea with a difference, partnering with renowned toy store Hamley’s to supply board games for members and their children to provide what he describes as an uplifting experience. He

has also introduced a unique water menu with a variety of different waters from the UK, Italy, Denmark, Portugal and Scotland. There’s also a new coffee menu which includes exotic varieties such as Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kopi Luwak from Thailand, often referred to as the world’s most expensive coffee deriving its name from the Indonesian civic cat. As well as the main restaurant, described as French-style cuisine using British produce wherever possible, the club boasts a bistro, a bar and lounge menu. The club also won an award from Spirit Business for its cocktails.

This month HQ’s Legal Eagle offers advice on ensuring that the festive period is your best yet and litigation free with regard to regulations and member safety. On the topic of safety, Hubbard offers advice on keeping ice safe during the busy period, while CGA presents its findings on winning with wine – cork versus screw top. Meanwhile, back on the entertainment front, Dransfields Managing Director Chris Haley reports on the company’s acquisition of Lottery King.

Wine report Cork versus screw tops R

esearch has revealed that cork-sealed wines retail for £5.38 more per bottle than those with artificial closures, driving value into the on-trade. Wines sealed with a cork are showing signs of ‘premiumisation’ in the on-trade, with consumers seemingly willing to pay more for their associated quality, according to new research from CGA. Mark Newton, Senior Category Manager at CGA, said: “Overall, these figures suggest wines sealed with a cork may well be starting to show signs of ‘premiuminisation’ in terms of consumer and licensee behaviour. This is a trend which for some time has been a cornerstone of the spirits sector, and is now being seen within overall movements in wine con-

sumption at higher price bands across the category.” The research, which analysed on-trade sales figures of the top 50 still wine brands (by volume) in the UK, found that the cork-finished wine brands retail at a significant price premium of on average £5.38 more per bottle than those with an artificial closure. The research also demonstrated the price positioning gap between closure types is widening, with the retail price of cork closed wine increasing by over 11% since 2015, compared to +6% for artificialclosed wines, presenting an opportunity for licensees to trade customers up to a more premium choice. Total distribution for wines sealed with a cork is also on the rise, growing +48% since 2015 (com-

pared with +10% for artificial closures), suggesting an increased interest in offering wines closed with a cork. Coupled with an increased sales value for corksealed wines in the last year of +17 (compared with +9% for artificial closures) the trend towards cork closures represents a significant profit opportunity for licensees and restaurateurs. João Rui Ferreira, Chairman of Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR), said: “We already know there is a strong consumer preference for cork due to its association with quality wine. For the first time, these results clearly demonstrate the value this presents to licensees, who can trade customers up and benefit from higher profit margins.”

Keeping it clean this Christmas T

he ice experts at Hubbard Systems, UK distributor for Scotsman icemakers, offer the following advice on maintaining clean ice during the busy festive season. • Keep hands clean – staff should always wash their hands before and during service. • Keep the machine clean – by following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Make sure you empty, clean and sanitise the storage bin on a regular, weekly basis. • Don’t pick up ice with your hands – use a scoop. • Have a maintenance schedule for the components that need regular cleaning. It will help keep your equipment in peak condition.

Any operator who is concerned about a potential problem with their ice machine can use the 3M Clean ‘n Trace kit, available from many outlets. The operator just swabs the area – in this case the inside of the storage bin – then pops the swab into a solution that will change colour to show if there is an issue with bacteria. “There are loads of online resources that can help anyone looking for guidance on cleaning ice machines, such as our ‘how to’ videos, which can be found in the video area at scotsman-ice.co.uk,” says Simon Aspin, commercial director of Hubbard Systems. “With all the information available, there’s simply no excuse for poor hygiene.” • t. 0800 616559 • www.scotsman-ice.co.uk

Time management – a crucial tool for success The golden rule of business says that effective time management is the key to success.

F

indings from an Instantprint report reveal that 53% of those surveyed found that admin and report writing were taking up a disproportionate amount of time when compared with growing business. “It is interesting to see from the research that it is the management of our hours, minutes and seconds that have the biggest effect on the running of a successful enterprise,” said co-founder of Instantprint James Kinsella.“Every business is unique, but improving time management and optimizing working hours can only bring positive outcomes.” So how can you make sure you’re getting the most out of your time? 1. Discover your most productive work hours Finding your most productive time is crucial, and can be achieved by listening to your body’s natural energy spurts. Things that kill productivity include: routine activities and continuous work which can demotivate you. Go a maximum of two hours and then tune out to tune back in. 2. Just say no Many of us are just too polite, but sometimes it’s important to simply say no. Distractions steal your time from important tasks. People may ask you to do a quick thing here and a quick thing there, but suddenly your hours disappear. If you’ve got an important task, keep at it and don’t let anyone interrupt; you’re busy. One in three decision makers claim they struggle to do everything they need to in a day, so make your ‘everything’ list shorter.

3. Go step-by-step Don’t think of your to-do list as one huge item to complete. It’s overwhelming and will only put pressure on you. Take one thing at a time and this will allow you to give each task the attention it deserves. As a bonus tip, make sure you establish a method to classify tasks that need to take priority over others. 4. Know what gets you through Some days you’ll need a boost to power through your workload. Whether it’s because you had a bad night’s sleep or you’re especially busy that day, find

what gets you through. Nearly half (46%) of those surveyed say having coffee or tea on the go helps them through their daily tasks, and 1 in 3 have a playlist set up to get them in the zone. 5. Exercise and eat well It may seem unrelated but taking care of yourself will have a direct impact on your mood and concentration. A healthy diet with regular exercise increases dopamine in the brain, making you feel better and more alert. Also sitting at a desk all day can really take a toll so it’s important to get moving when you can.

HQ BUILDING THE BUSINESS

Legal eagle HQ BUILDING THE BUSINESS

The countdown to Christmas has begun and preparations are well underway for the festive period. But are you sure that your enthusiasm isn’t likely to contravene any regulations? Legal Eagle David Lucas offers the following advice.

I

t is important not to overlook any licensing requirements or responsibilities in connection with any arrangements that are made. These are some of the items that may need to be considered:

licences and club premises certificates contain restrictions on drinks promotions. It is essential that personnel involved in the sale or supply of alcohol are aware of their responsibility to prevent irresponsible drinks promotions in order to avoid possible prosecution or review of the licence or certificate.

• Ensure that any activities which are to be provided are authorised by a premises licence or club premises certificate. For example, if musical entertainment is to be provided until midnight on New Year’s Eve it is a licensable activity which must be included in the licence or certificate. • If activities are to be provided during extended hours at any time over the festive period it is essential to ensure that the relevant hours are permitted by the existing premises licence or club premises certificate. A premises licence or club premises certificate will contain standard timings during which the authorised activities may be provided throughout a normal week. If licensable activities are to be provided beyond the standard timings, for example on New Year’s Eve, the extended hours must be included within the non-standard timings contained in the licence or certificate. • If activities are to be provided in an area which is not normally used for that purpose it is essential to ensure that the area in question is covered by the existing premises licence or club premises certificate. For example, the intention may be to provide mulled wine for sale at a Christmas market in a garden or car park. The garden or car park must be included within the area identified on the plan attached to the licence or certificate where the sale or supply of alcohol may take place. • If the proposed activities, hours or area are not included within an existing premises licence or certificate there is still sufficient time in which to apply for a permanent variation of the licence or certificate in order to ensure that the necessary approvals are in place. • Alternatively, if a permanent solution is not considered necessary it would be possible to give a temporary event notice in order to obtain the necessary authorisation. However, the limitations applicable to a temporary event notice must be taken into consideration. In particular, the annu-

• Check the premises licence or club premises certificate to ensure that there are no individual conditions which may have an impact upon the proposed activities during the festive period.

al restrictions on the total number of days (21) during which a venue can be subject to temporary event notices and the maximum period which may be covered by a single notice (seven days). There is also a need to ensure that adequate prior notice is given (not less than 10 working days is preferable but not less than five working days may be sufficient).

• Any premises which are situated near to residential properties should take steps to prevent any activities causing a nuisance to neighbours. For example, measures should be implemented to prevent noise levels from musical entertainment or people outside the premises becoming excessive and attracting complaints. Such complaints may lead to a review of a premises licence or club premises certificate. A general review of the licensing requirements and measures to be implemented during the Christmas and New Year festivities will help to avoid an unnecessary hangover following the celebrations.

• It is important to ensure that any temporary personnel working over the festive period are properly trained and authorised to sell alcohol. In particular, they must be made aware of their responsibility to prevent the purchase and consumption of alcohol of alcohol by persons under 18. • Refresher training is recommended for all existing personnel in respect of their responsibilities concerning the sale or supply of alcohol as they will need to be particularly vigilant during busy periods over the festive period. • All personnel should be made aware of their responsibility to prevent drunkenness on the premises. • Breaches of those responsibilities may result in a fixed penalty or prosecution and may lead to the licence or certificate being reviewed. • The mandatory conditions attached to premises

Dransfields acquires Lottery King and begins machine overhaul

ransfields are pleased to announce that they have purchased the Lottery King machines operation from their previous owners Kelly’s Eye. Lottery King is a well established pull tab lottery operator that has been in business for over 25 years. Their distinctive blue and yellow Play & Win vending machines are a common feature in most clubs around the Country. “In the latter years however, there has been under-investment in the Lottery King business leading to poorer maintenance standards,” says Dransfields Managing Director Chris Haley. Dransfields have committed their engineering teams to carry out a complete overhaul of all Lottery King machines. This will include upgrading coin mechanisms to accept the new £1 coin. They will also be renewing sensors all on all tickets stacks, replacing all lighting and generally giving the machines a spruce up, all designed to help maximise vending quality and improve clubs’ ticket sales An additional benefit to being a Dransfields pull tab customer, is that clubs are automatically enrolled into the DransCash Points club. Points can be redeemed for great raffle prizes and equipment for clubs.

Chris Haley said: “I am delighted to welcome all Lottery King customers to Dransfields. Since we launched our Lucky Dip pull tab business eight years ago our customers have sold over 250 million pull tab tickets, helping clubs to raise millions of

pounds and thrive at the heart of the communities they serve. Dransfields is firmly committed to clubs and we look forward to helping Lottery King customers increase their fundraising through increased ticket sales supported by quality service.” Dransfields is proud sponsor of the Club Awards Entertainment Club of the Year and Charity Club of the Year.

CMAE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION Networking is a passion for new CMAE Director of Education, Torbjörn Johansson. Pictured in his GAF Sweden role (left) with his GAF Denmark counterpart Jörgen Mathiesen.

Awordwith...

Torbjörn Johansson CMAE’s outgoing Director of Education Mike Braidwood CCM invites his successor, Torbjörn Johansson, to share his thoughts on the past, present and future of CMAE training. Torbjörn, when did you first get involved with the CMAE Management Development Programme? I was actually involved from the start when CMAE had discussions with the CMAA about the programme. We tried about five years ago to have a MDP in Sweden but we weren´t successful. After that I have followed its progress and right now we have found an angle to work with it in Scandinavia. How important is it to the club sector to have an organisation like the CMAE helping

40 CLUB MIRROR

to drive standards and provide professional qualifications? I think it’s very important. And my belief is also that the CMAE has to work to strengthen the national organisations such as GCMA, ADGF, GMVD, AEGG and others. We have to drive standards, but together with the alliance partners. You have run GAF Sweden for many years. What do you feel the main differences will be for you taking on the whole of Europe under the CMAE banner?

Well for starters, when I took the role with GAF seven years ago the organisation was struggling and we were trying to survive which I’m happy to say we did. It’s now thriving today. CMAE is doing very well with a fantastic educational model to work from and a great potential for further growth. CMAE has really picked up some momentum in the last few years especially with its education programmes. How do you see this continuing? It certainly has and we expect to see still further

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Where were you born? Just outside Stockholm, Sweden in 1976. Torbjörn looks forward to meeting as many members as possible at CMAE’s European Conference in November.

Alliances and partnerships will continue to be a mainstay of CMAE’s education path. Pictured far left with (l to r) Göran Tyrsing, Manager Swedish Greenkeeper Assocation (SGA), Thomas Ahlberg, President GAF (Manager Bokskogen GC) and Kristian Hägglund, President SGA (Manager/Greenkeeper Tomelilla GC).

Education? I have a bachelors degree in Sport Pedagogics and attended the very first Masters in Sport Governance and Organisation (MESGO). Your biggest strength? To take ideas and make them into actions. And weakness? I need to reflect more.

The Board and Torbjörn will continue to drive CMAE’s Education Programme. growth. The programme will be spread to more countries and I also see it being launched in more languages. We also need to add more activities and hear what our members want. Cooperation with alliance partners is also key. Is there anything new you will be adding? Yes indeed there will be. I have already told the board about a few of the ideas, but as always it’s important to understand and assess everything before implementing changes or adding extra activities and/or services. CMAE has a strong following from golf and city clubs, and is working hard on broadening out into other sporting clubs. What do you think CMAE has to do to attract different sports to its education curriculum? This is a very exciting path for me. I come from a very strong club background and have been heavily involved in rugby, volleyball, tennis, table-tennis, handball and outside sports within the YMCA. We need to get everyone on board because there is so much we can learn from each other, over and above the boundaries of each individual sporting discipline.

Favourite book? Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

At the World Conference Orlando 2017 (left) with fellow CMAE members. – location, content, documenting, time of year and of course price. We have two conferences every year in Sweden (both are three days) which are very successful, attracting 120-130 people every time. But there is a need for both inspiring speakers as well as people offering tools that the participants can implement at their facility. The future is very interesting. You need to find the right time and the right place which will work for both members and Alliance Partners. With the advances of technology there is demand for online quick and convenient education. Will you consider an online platform ? We will be discussing this once I’m fully onboard but of course we need to be online with training. CMAE already does a lot of things online, but the MDP is also built on human interaction. You need the combination. Exactly what will be our way forward is very exciting to think about.

In recent years CMAE has expanded into the Middle East. Are there any other territories you feel have potential for expansion? This is something we will definitely be discussing, but any territory in need of education and support – we will be there! North Africa, for example, could be a possibility.

What do you see as your biggest challenges? Having enough time to do everything that I love meeting people and listening to our members and then performing things on demand. The first challenge is, of course, to get a hold on everything that is the CMAE. This will take a while but I am ready for the challenge.

CMAE’s European Conference has been reinstated due to popular demand. What do you think a modern conference needs to offer in order to succeed in the busy conference market? Correct! The conference market is indeed very busy; you need to standout. All aspects are very important

Which parts of your role do you think will be the most fun? I love the diversity of the role. Education is key and I love to stand in front of a crowd of members getting them gelling together. Then working with partners is also a passion; it’s very important to pair partners with our industry.

Favourite food? Tough one! I eat pretty much everything, but a great choice is a Swedish potato pancake with pork and lingonberry. (It’s a National dish on Tuesday lunchtimes in Sweden.) Favourite sport other than golf? I actually only play golf ‘for fun’. Volleyball and football were my two sports. I also played table tennis, squash, handball and floorball. Do you belong to any other clubs? I’ve been President at three volleyball clubs and involved in the YMCA (sports) along with many more. I love the club industry and the involvement of people outside their work. If you had to change careers what would you love to be? Through the years, I have had thoughts about ‘What if? The thought of working with sales (like my father) has been interesting. I have owned a hotel that my father was the CEO of and also been partowner of an export firm working with fish, asphalt, cider and other things exporting to western Africa. I’ve always been interested in trying new things. How do you relax? I meet friends, have a chat and listen to music. I am a person who loves to have people around me. I love travelling and listening to podcasts and books.

Premier League: Watford v Arsenal

Wales drew with Georgia in the earlier game between the sides back in October 2016 and now face a tricky trip to Tbilisi.

The Gunners have improved in recent weeks and will be desperate to reassert their authority in the League. Watford are no pushovers though and have looked highly effective in recent outings.

Tuesday October 17, 7.45pm – BT Sport HD

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid v Tottenham Hotspur A massive midweek European tie as Spurs head to the Bernabeu to take on the reigning Champions League holders and their formidable attacking players, including striker Cristiano Ronaldo and former Spurs old boy Gareth Bale.

England look to be cruising towards qualification, albeit in a fairly uninspired manner, for the 2018 World Cup in Group F and beat Lithuania 2-0 at Wembley in March. Monday October 9 7.45pm Sky Sports HD

World Cup 2018 Qualifier: Wales v Republic of Ireland This is a critical match for the two sides given the delicate balance in Group D which currently sees Serbia in pole position to qualify for the finals and Wales and the Republic of Ireland trailing closely behind. Premier League: Manchester Utd v Tottenham Hotspur Manchester United have set the pace in the early weeks of the season and will be aiming to keep up their forward momentum during the autumn months. Spurs will have to be on their mettle to deal with the speed of Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, three players who have had a huge influence for United so far this season.

Premier League: Liverpool v Manchester United This will be one of the most-hyped games of the month as two of the form teams of recent weeks meet at Anfield. Both teams did extremely well during the transfer window and should produce plenty of attacking football here.

Tuesday October 17 7.45pm BT Sport HD

UEFA Champions League: Maribor v Liverpool Champions League action as the Reds travel to Slovenia. They should have too much all-round quality for their opponents, although Maribor winger Aleks Pihler has proven himself a real attacking threat. Tuesday October 17 7.45pm BT Sport HD

UEFA Europa League: Red Star Belgrade v Arsenal

Premier League: Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur

United have plenty of history with Benfica and the Portuguese side sold defender Victor Lindelof to United in the summer while another new boy, Nemanja Matic, also plied his trade for the Lisbon giants. And, of course, Jose Mourinho was Benfica coach in 2000, having previously served as the club’s assistant coach.

The Gunners find themselves in the Europa League for the first time in two decades but will no doubt roll up their sleeves and try and reach the knockout stages of the secondtier competition. This trip to Serbia is unlikely to be a straightforward one for the visitors.

This should be an exciting game given the all-round quality of both sets of players. Honours were even between the sides last season, United winning 1-0 at Old Trafford in December and then Spur prevailing 2-1 on their home turf in May. United will be favourites to win this one.

Sunday October 22 4pm Sky Sports Premier League HD

Premier League: Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

UEFA Champions League: Chelsea v Roma Chelsea will relish their return to the Champions League after missing out on European competition last season. The Blues have won two of their four meetings with the team from the Italian capital – a 1965 Fairs Cup win and a 2008 Champions League win on their way to the final.

Spurs have discovered that playing their home games at Wembley is a double-edged sword. It is obviously a magnificent playing surface but visiting sides are often inspired by being at the home of English football. Still, there is enough quality in Mauricio Pochettino's side for the team to be challenging for the title once again as they did last season.

UEFA Champions League: Chelsea v Roma Chelsea host the home leg of this group fixture against Roma. The Italian club’s fans were delighted by their club’s recent record signing, Patrik Schick. Unfortunately, when Bob arrives at the stadium he realises the seat is in the corner of the stadium giving him a terrible view of the other end of the pitch, and his view is obstructed by a TV camera. About halfway through the first half, Bob notices an empty seat 5 rows up from the pitch right on the halfway line. He decides to take a chance and makes his way down the stands to the empty seat. An elderly gentleman is sitting next to the empty seat. “Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?” asks Bob. The man says no. Now, very excited to be in such a great seat for the match, Bob again inquires of the man next to him, “This is incredible! BEHIND THE BAR Back in the day Sir Alex Ferguson was curious to know how Arsène Wenger’s team went on such a magnificent unbeaten run, so he decides on a visit to Arsenal’s training ground to see how Wenger trains his players. After one day he is not really impressed by the training practices, so he asks Wenger how he gets his players so sharp. “Well, it is simple. I sometimes ask my players a difficult question, and that way they stay really sharp mentally”. Of course Fergie wants an example, so Wenger asks Thierry Henry to come over. He asks: “Henry, he is not your brother, but still he is your father’s son. Who is he?” “That is not difficult,” Henry answers immediately, “Of course that is me.” “You see? That’s the way you keep them sharp,” Wenger says to Ferguson. Fergie, who wants to be the next “Invincibles”, decides to bring this into his training the next day. He calls Ruud van Nistlerooy over. “Ruud, I have a question for you,” he says, “He is not your brother, but still he is your father’s son, who is he?” “My God, Ferguson,” is van Nistlerooy’s reply, “That is a tough one to answer, can I sleep on that for one night?” Ferguson agrees with the onenight postponement. So that night RvN decides to call Jaap Stam. He has been at Manchester United, so maybe he knows something about these questions. “Jaap Stam, maybe you know the answer to this question: he is not your brother, but still he is your father’s son. Who is he?” “That is easy, that is me!” says Stam. So the next day RvN walks full of confidence to Fergie. Fergie asks: “Ruud, do you know the answer to my question now?” “Yes it was actually very easy,” he says, “Is it Jaap Stam?” Ferguson answers, “No of course not you stupid bastard. It’s Thierry Henry.”

The Arsenal fan asked the Sheikh to tie a pillow in his back, but the pillow lasted only for 10 lashes. The Liverpool fan asked the Sheikh to tie two pillows in his back though it only lasted for 15 lashes. The Sheikh then turned to the Man Utd fan and said: “You are from a most beautiful part of the world, your city has some of the best and most loyal football fans in the world. For this, you may have two wishes!” “Cheers mate, your Most Royal and Merciful highness”, The ManUtd fan replies. “In recognition of your kindness, my first wish is that you give me not 20, but 200 lashes. ” “Not only are you an honourable, handsome and powerful man, you are also very brave,” says the Sheikh with an admiring look on his face. “If 200 lashes is what you desire, then so be it. And your second wish? What is it to be? ” the Sheikh asks. “Please tie the Liverpool fan to my back.”

INTERVIEW: BRIAN O’DRISCOLL After a glittering rugby career Brian O’Driscoll is now a pundit for BT Sport.

The word of BOD... Former Leinster, Ireland and Lions centre and captain Brian O’Driscoll is now bringing his vast knowledge of the game to bear on his role as pundit for BT Sport. We talked to the rugby legend to get his thoughts about the recent Lions tour as well as the upcoming new season. Q: Over the summer we all witnessed an exceptional British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand which resulted in a historic series draw. There’s been a fair bit of debate about the Lions’ future but would you make any changes to the structure of future tours? A: No. I wouldn’t change a whole lot about the Lions. I think in a perfect world, you’d have the players together for another week before they travel. You could see that they were getting better the more time they spent together, so I don’t think you can shorten the tour, as has been suggested, if you want to make them competitive come test time. The reality is those international teams you’re playing against in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand have been together a long time and have core groups of players irrespective of when

50 CLUB MIRROR

you play them. The Lions don’t have the luxury of time and have to form new partnerships in a very short period of time and that’s not an easy thing to do. You can see how the Lions struggled for the first few weeks of the tour of New Zealand and then got it together for the test series. The All Blacks were absolutely rattled for that last 25 minutes in the 3rd Test. Q: Would you have taken the draw before the start of the series? A: At the start of the tour, I would have as New Zealand very rarely fail to win a home Test series. It was weird though after the final Test seeing how uneasy both Sam Warburton and Kieran Read were lifting one arm of the trophy each. It was one of those really weird awkward moments, but I think it whet the appetite for the next Lions tour, to South Africa in 2021.

Q: How do you think the Lions will affect the upcoming Six Nations? A: I always like playing in the Six Nations after a Lions tour. It’s always a really fun and interesting time for those players that go away with the Lions and develop new friendships and great relationships with guys from other home nations. And then, when you come up to play against them, it’s almost like you want to get one up on them and you go harder against them. You might have a bit of fun out on the pitch but you really want to get good shots on them where possible or make someone look silly, just for the aftermath in the dressing room afterwards, or when you have a drink together later on. All the nations have essentially shared their playbooks on the Lions tours so the coaches have to create new ones. It’s almost like a game of chess, trying to present something similar to before but slightly different.

Q: What about the various domestic and European competitions this season? A: It’s really tough for teams to get that balance between domestic and European competitions. If you win the European Cup, it’s very hard to mentally switch on again for a PRO14 or Aviva Premiership Final because human instinct is to feel satisfaction with winning something. The difference between winning and losing is more often than not having a greater appetite and hunger than the opposition and they’re the margins between winning and losing. Although, having said that, Saracens won the double the season before last. Had they gotten into the Aviva Premiership Final last season, having already won the European Champions Cup, who would have bet against them? There’s nothing between the teams at that level, which is brilliant and is the way you want it. Q: Any transfers taking your eye in the Aviva Premiership? A: Yeah, I think there’s a good few. I think Newcastle Falcons have done a good job on the recruitment front. You expect them to build on some really good work done over the last couple of years. They’ve evolved their game into suiting their artificial pitch, and I think their new French international Maxime Mermoz is a good player, while DTH van der Merwe is as real try-scorer and then they have former England man Toby Flood to control things at fly-half. They’re three very good signings and I think the Falcons potentially could push for Europe. And Leicester Tigers have recruited well, not least with George Ford coming in. I think they just missed a little bit of control at No.10 and he’ll be able to do a little bit more than Freddie Burns was able to last season. They’ve also added Johnny May to the mix and he really is a born tryscorer. Sale Sharks have made an interesting signing in former Wallaby James O’Connor. It will be interesting to see how that pans out as I don’t necessarily know that he’s the type of personality that Sale needed. But, do you know, when he’s boxoffice, when he’s good he’s good and if he can just keep his head on and stay fit, he’ll have some magic moments for them. As for Harlequins, I feel that they’re underachieving in their skill levels. I suppose I’ve been a small bit disappointed that Quins haven’t been able to step it up from their success of a few years’ ago The foundation laid by Conor O’Shea before he took the Italy job left them in good shape but they’ve kind of flattered to deceive. They play some good, high-tempo rugby that’s good to watch but you need to see their key players really bossing that a little bit more and stepping up in big games. That’s definitely what you get from Saracens and that’s why I’m so impressed with their culture. When their players come back from international duty, they’re as hungry to play in the Sarries jersey as they are for their countries.

BT Sport pundit Brian O’Driscoll is looking forward to an exciting new season.

Q: How have they managed to create such a strong culture at Saracens? A: You look at their core players who are driven by Owen Farrell. He’s a guy who wouldn’t accept anyone having a sub-standard performance, either in training or in a game. Knowing his personality, I think Farrell is a great man to have at the helm. And obviously Maro Itoje, a potential England captain, is in there too. The likes of Jamie George, George Kruis and the Vunipola brother are also inspirations. It means you’ve got a really brilliant core group of leaders in there, and they could be a dominant force for a good few years. Q: Talking of class players, do you think Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi can come back and play for England despite being sent home from a training camp for disciplinary reasons? A: First of all, I’m a huge fan of Manu as a person. I had great fun with him on the Lions tour of Australia in 2013, and as a player I’m a big admirer of him. It’s been hard watching his career in recent times. He’s made a few errors of judgement since he burst onto scene, and has also suffered a number of injuries, and he’s running out of lives. Q: As a club fan, which club do you think is the most galling to be a supporter of? A: Good question. I think Gloucester are definitely in the mix. I think they’ve had so much talent over the years but they just haven’t been able to pull it all together in a common direction. They’ve showed huge promise but then, more

often than not, they falter in the business end of the season. I think I’d be frustrated if I was a Gloucester supporter. I’ve met many of them and they’ve told me as such! Q: Now you’re retired, can you enjoy going out yourself a bit more to clubs and the like? A: I think the problem is it passed me by. I don’t know too many of my mates that go out to pubs and clubs. We meet for a couple of pints here and there but I’ve started going out and eating food and then going home. I don’t know what’s happened to me! I’ve never let what I do curtail what I wanted socially to do – I think you just have to play smart. I’ve been out over the course of my career lots of times and not been drinking in the car. There’s a lot of perception when you’re on the hammer or whatever, you could be driving, but you still want to hang out with your mates and see them. It’s the only way you’re going to. Whereas now, you’ve less time because family and work takes an awful lot of it up, and you’re happy with it. I think it just becomes an evolution of you as a person and you don’t need to be hanging out with your buddies like I was in my early 20s. Q: Are the best pubs/clubs in England or Ireland? A: Ireland! I’ve had a couple of good nights out in England in my time, but obviously you have your favourite venues and I go back to the same ones. When I do have a night out with the boys, it tends to be the same places – nothing pretentious, a good mixed crowd and a decent pint of Guinness!

ASK THE EXPERTS – RISK ASSESSMENT

Do’s and don’ts in risk assessments It is sometimes difficult to know how to complete all the club’s legal requirements and to understand what they all are. Club Insure offers up this quick guide to help you understand a risk assessment better.

A

risk assessment is essentially a form that helps identify the actual and potential risks that could happen in your workplace. Their main purpose is to highlight any risks and to weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions, or should do more to prevent harm. The Health and Safety at Work etc [SIC} 1974 (HSWA) requires employers to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees. They are a very important step in protecting your workers and your club, as well as complying with the law. Do: • Write a policy. This will let your employees know about your commitment to health and safety. • Pick a competent employee to help you. This can be one of your employees or someone from outside your club. • Walk around your workplace to see the risks yourself. You will be able to see exactly how people undergo their daily tasks and if there are any potential risks. • Ask employees. You might not see what they do or they might have experienced some risks before. • Look through previous accident or illness records. These might have been caused by risks that are still likely to happen in your workplace. • Think both short and long term. Risks might not just affect people in the short term; a certain task might have risks in the future. • Record your findings. Writing down the risks and showing them to your employees means they can understand them as well. It also allows you to review your findings at a later date. • Date your findings and the changes needed. You

MORE INFORMATION can then look at this later and see if the changes have made any difference. Don’t: • Over complicate things. The risk assessment form does not have to be a long complicated process. Just note the risks and the steps being taken to reduce the likelihood of them happening. • Forget to do a risk assessment. Make a date to complete the process each year. • Muddle along. If you feel stuck ask for help. There are many different channels to get help from. • Brush risks under the carpet. No matter how insignificant a risk might seem, you still need to make a note of it and set up precautions to stop the risks.

ASK THE EXPERTS – HALLOWEEN

Getitrightfor fright night The UK’s Halloween industry is now worth more than £300m, placing it behind only Christmas and Easter among our most lucrative festivals. Are you prepared?

W

ith Christmas just a fir cone’s throw away, Halloween holds a special and useful place in the club calendar, bridging a gap. Over £300m is now spent on these celebrations in the UK so clubs should be taking their share of that leisure spend. The US is an interesting role model for all things Halloween; 64% of the population participate in activities with an average spend per head of nearly $75. This is driven by multi-media activ-

TOP PUMPKIN CARVING TIPS • Cut an access hole in the bottom of your pumpkin so you can scoop out the insides using an ice cream scoop or similar. (You can reattach the base once you have gutted the pumpkin.) • Use a plastic scouring pad to clean and smooth the inside of the pumpkin. • Trace or draw the outline of your design onto the pumpkin. • Use a fine serrated knife or small carving blade to make detailed cuts. • Wrap your finished carving in plastic wrap and refrigerate until needed.

RECIPE FOR PUMPKIN PIE Pumpkin pie is a traditional American recipe associated with Halloween and Thanksgiving. So don’t throw away the pulp from your pumpkin carving. Try the following recipe. 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg half a teaspoon of ground ginger 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 tablespoons milk 10 oz. (275g) plain flour two and a half ounces (65g) margarine two and a half ounces of lard 3-4 tablespoons water

Method • Place the pumpkin in a colander over a pan of boiling water and steam for about 20 minutes until tender. Then mash and cool. • Sift the flour and two teaspoons of cinnamon into a bowl then rub in fats until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

• Mix in the water to make a dough. Knead the dough on a floured surface and roll. Grease a baking tin (10.5 x 7.5 inches), line with the dough and prick the base. Line the base with greaseproof paper and top with beans. Blind bake for 15 minutes at Gas Mark 5, 190°C (this will keep the pastry flat) before removing the paper and beans. Bake for a further 5 minutes. • Whisk the eggs, sugar, ginger, nutmeg and ground cinnamon. • Fold in the mashed pumpkin and 4 tablespoons of milk and pour into the pastry case. Bake at 375°F, Gas Mark 5, 190°C for about 40 minutes, or until set. • Serve warm or cold with whipped cream.

ASK THE EXPERTS – BONFIRE NIGHT

Remember, remember the 5th of November The nights are drawing in but there are still lots of reasons to celebrate with bonfires and fireworks. But with great events come potential dangers. Aon’s Andy Kitchener provides the following advice.

C

lubs want to protect staff, members and guests from harm or damage at all times. Fireworks night has its own particular implications so it’s worth doing a thorough check through your safety procedures as well as being clear where you would stand with your insurance policy if anything went wrong. To make sure that Public Liability Cover remains fully in force you will need to comply with the policy conditions of your insurance. Below is a list of tips designed to help protect

you during bonfire and firework displays, but please do check the specifics of your own policy before holding an event. • Use experts – For category 4 fireworks, and above, you will need to have a qualified pyrotechnic technician to co-ordinate the display. This co-ordinator will need to hold valid Public Liability insurance for that activity. Otherwise a competent person can let these off; please check with your insurer. • Keep people at a safe distance – Spectators should be kept at a safe distance from the bonfire and fireworks and behind a rope or other barrier. • Store safely – Fireworks should be kept in a closed metal box when not being used. Fireworks should be stored and lit a safe distance from the bonfire. • Inform the emergency services – The fire brigade and police should be notified prior to any event and if they give you advice then you should comply with it fully. • First aid – First aid facilities should be provided for the duration of any display.

As always, clubs will no doubt apply common sense to ensure that these events go as smoothly and safely as possible with minimal risk. But thinking ahead could help ensure a successful and stress-free bonfire nigh for everyone involved.

ASK THE EXPERTS – WINNING WEBSITES

Keeping members on-side and on the club site The competitive nature of the online world means that functioning websites cannot allow for any mistakes. If you want to keep your members using the club site – and passing it on to friends – then it’s time to take stock, advise the folk at Larrytech.

M

istakes on your website usually result in a high percentage of your traffic ‘bouncing’ away quicker than they arrive. Below we look at the main problems from a user’s perspective. 1. Your site is non-responsive The implementation of the ‘Mobilegeddon’ in April last year meant that non-responsive websites should now be considered a thing of the past. With two in three adults using a smartphone to browse the internet, this means accessibility is everything. Non-responsive websites aren’t easy to navigate, people don’t know where to click or how to find something if they cannot see the entire site within their screen. If a user is having to pinch and zoom (which we know they’ll eventually get tired of) they are likely to click away and find a website that IS responsive. 2. Outdated website design If your website is aging, it’s definitely time for a refresh; 85% of your visitors judge your website within the first 10 seconds of landing on it. If your website is outdated and not aesthetically pleasing why would they stay on it? Users are looking for something modern and fresh. In website design, designs are consistently evolving and you can never consider your design ahead of the pack. 3. Unclear navigation structure In essence, entering a website can be seen as a journey; you have to navigate your way around the site to get to where you want to be. Therefore, when designing and developing your site, you need to consider if your user can get to where they want to be straight away and with ease. 4. No ‘About Us’ page If your website has got through the first hurdle of engaging users, many will navigate towards the ‘about us’ page to find out a bit more about you. An ‘about’ page is an effective tool for selling the club and helping prospective members get excited enough to join. 5. Poor content Poor content is something we see all too often, if

60 CLUB MIRROR

your content isn't compelling why would users stay on your website? Poor content can be anything from a lack of content to content that simply doesn’t suit the club’s ‘persona’ and message. 6. Content is hard to read Content font size and colouring is flexible. However, your font type and colour need to compliment your website design. The clearer your text is to read the more likely people are to stick around on your website. It’s about a clear typeface that is easy on the eye and can appeal in the right way to reflect the club. Choice of colour can also play a part, depending on the tint of your background. 7. Too many ads Extensive use of pop-up adverts is enough to get on anyone’s nerves. Although many well-known sites use pop-ups, people do get frustrated with these as it prevents their reason of action when clicking through to a site. If you use a range of adverts, it may be time for a re-think as this is a significant cause of users moving away from a website. 8. Slow loading pages Arguably one of the biggest problems in outdated websites is slow loading websites. Your website can be aesthetically pleasing, with a great balance of good quality content, but if it takes longer than four seconds to load, users will quickly move away from

it. Page speed is a significant factor in a user’s decision to stay or leave a website page. 9. Lack of personality Every club needs a ‘personality’ in order to stand out from the crowd. This needs to be replicated throughout the website. 10. Broken links When a user navigates around your website they will get frustrated when they click on a call to action and the page that they are trying to access has an error message. This is not only hindering user experience it also damages your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) performance. Broken links happen as a result of page title changes or perhaps if a page is deleted but certain content still internally links to that specific page. As always there’s a solution to everything –knowing what the problem is in the first place is half the battle!
