THE NEW Congratulations to clubs all over the UK

Standard in

Water Boilers

Here we are in December with a solid year behind us, shored up and ready to leap into 2014 with high hopes – tempered as always with realism of course. Uncertainty still surrounds the impact of the Late Night Levy and Early Morning Restriction Orders (see this month’s Legal Eagle for the latest; pages 8-9), but good news comes from our friends at The Sport and Recreation Alliance, who report that clubs (sports clubs specifically in this instance) have been experiencing a 21% increase in adult memberships since 2011 (see page 26). Good news also abounds from last month’s 2013 Club Awards. The ingenuity and commitment of club officials and members was there for all to see. All of the clubs, gathered together under that one roof on that one night, proved yet again that clubs are pivotal to the social fabric of this country, providing a safe and welcoming environment in which to socialise, long after the local pub has sadly closed its doors for the last time. (The average age of the clubs who joined us on the night was over 100 years; if there’s a club equivalent of anti-wrinkle cream then these clubs are using it in bucket loads.) For those of you unable to join us at the 2013 Awards, we invite you to re-live the night ‘by proxy’ (see pages 31-61). Congratulations to each and every club reading this – Club Awards finalist or not – for always being there for your members and your communities. From all of us to all of you – here’s to a happy and healthy New Year.

club world Alliance chief executive announces retirement Sport and Recreation Alliance chief executive Tim Lamb is to retire in February 2014. His decision to retire follows a programme of modernisation of the Alliance, the agreement by its board to a new strategic direction and the negotiation of a new, in-principle threeyear funding deal with Sport England. Mr Lamb, aged 60, steps down after eight years leading the Alliance, having joined from the England and Wales Cricket Board where he was Chief Executive. Alliance chair Andy Reed paid tribute to the work of the outgoing chief executive. “Tim has steered the organisation through some significant changes during his time here. His tenure has been marked by a real period of modernisation and increased professionalism, reflecting the needs of our broad and diverse membership,” said Mr Reed.

Box Steam Brewery’s new Sales Director Box Steam Brewery has announced the appointment of David Southway as Sales Director. Mr Southway joins the hand crafted real ale producer from Carlsberg UK where he was the Sales Director for the South & South West for eight years. “I am delighted to be joining Box Steam Brewery at such an important time in the company’s development,” said Mr Southway. “The plans for the brand in the UK are incredibly exciting and there is real potential for Box to flourish in the expanding hand crafted and real ale market.” Mr Southway’s career spans 30 years in the hospitality and drinks industry

CIU election results Club & Institute Union President George Dawson has been returned unopposed for another twoyear term, as has Vice-President John Tobin. Nominations for this year’s Presidential and National Executive elections closed on 14 October, 2013. The size of the National Executive has been reduced from 15 to 13. The combined Doncaster, Leeds, Wakefield and York City constituency will now only elect one member as will the Heavy Woollen, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire electoral district. Durham and Cleveland constituency is the only remaining district to elect two members.

VAT jeopardy for clubs

BT wins UEFA rights

The Rank Group has applied to launch an appeal in the UK’s Supreme Court following the shock announcement that a Court of Appeal has upheld HMRC’s case against Rank regarding VAT on gaming machines. The litigation concerns claims for repayment of VAT paid on takings from gaming machines, operated under Part III of the Gaming Act 1968 and subject to VAT.

HMRC argued that Part III was not designed to distinguish between different types of machine but to distinguish between ‘more transparent’ games featuring a human agent, and ‘in which the machines enabled gaming to take place without any such human participation’. • Latest advice and bulletins on how this may affect club will go up on clubmirror.com/news.

Carlsberg UK trade shows

Heineken calls for cider duty to be crushed

Carlsberg UK attracted over 1,000 free-trade customers to its Christmas Trade Shows which took place in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, London and Leeds. Over 50 on-trade drinks and service suppliers were at the events, including Diageo, Bacardi, Kopparberg, Concha Y Toro, CPL Training and Cask Marque as well as partner regional brewers. “We’re the only national brewer operating our own trade shows and bringing out customers together to speak directly with our own suppliers,” said Paul Waller, Customer Service & Third Party Brands Director at Carlsberg UK. “Feedback on this year’s shows has been excellent and we hope that they demonstrate our on-going commitment to supporting the ontrade.”

HEINEKEN has called for the Chancellor to review UK cider duty. Speaking at a visit to HP Bulmer, Herefordshire, by Jean-François van Boxmee (Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of HEINEKEN) and Alexis Nasard (President of Western Europe & Chief Marketing Officer) David Forde, UK Managing Director of HEINEKEN said: “The Government has long recognised the importance of the cider industry to the rural economy and we would ask the Chancellor to end the cider duty escalator, which is increased automatically by 2% above inflation each year. Since the escalator started in 2008, cider duty has increased by 49.8% and this is having a signifi-

UK clubs celebrate success at Club Mirror’s 21st Club Awards Clubs across Britain have been recognised for the pivotal role they play in the community at this year’s prestigious Club Awards, held on 21 November at The Palace Hotel, Manchster. The Club Awards, now in their 21st year, are owned and run by Club Mirror which is celebrating its 45th year of publication. Finalists and winners in the 2013 Club Awards were singled out for excellence across 26 categories. “Against a backdrop of local pub closures and cheap supermarket drink, our finalists and winners are proving that clubs have the ingenuity and longevity to keep growing their offering for members. More than that, so many of this year’s entrants report that they are picking up displaced pub goers whose local has closed,” said

Publishing Director Sean Ferris. “While this is sad news, it does mean that clubs are increasing their revenues and therefore the money is being ploughed back into the club; a virtuous circle at its finest.” Clubs were recognised for their many attributes across the spectrum from championing grass roots sports activities and building entertainment programmes, to growing their membership and improving their facilities. Clubs were also congratulated for raising hundreds of thousands

of pounds for charity across the year. “Now, more than ever, clubs are proving their importance to the social fabric of the UK. They are determined to remain at the heart of the community and we’re proud to be working with them to secure this position. In 2014 we will continue campaigning and lobbying on behalf of clubs across the UK, working to help anchor them ever more securely as the social hub of their communities – despite so many closures in other sections of the local area.” Sports presenter Hazel Irvine presented the Awards. Her research

of the clubs attending, tales from her broadcasting career, quips, humour and delivery had the audience on their feet. “Hazel joins quite a line up of previous Club Awards presenters from Clare Balding and Steve Ryder to John Inverdale and Chris

Hollins. She has raised the bar yet higher and was a delight to work with,” said Club Mirror’s Caroline Scoular. “Our guests on the night have been singing her praises.” • For further news on the UK’s only pan-industry club Awards, turn to pages 31-59.

Club Managers show off their Club Management Diplomas at the University of Stirling

Club managers gain management diplomas Seventeen members of the Club Managers Association of Europe (CMAE) have been awarded their Club Management Diploma certificates. The diplomas were awarded during the association’s Management Development Programme (MDP) Level One course at the University of Stirling in Scotland. The weeklong training course covered core competencies such as club gover-

nance, accounting and financial management, strategy and leadership, golf and sports operations, facilities management, membership and marketing. “It was another hugely successful week at Stirling and congratulations go to all the new diploma holders, adding to the list of ‘trailblazers’ who were awarded their CMAE Diplomas earlier this year,”said Kevin Fish CCM, Scottish

Golf Club Development Officer and Head of the Education Policy Board for the CMAE. “Together, we all strive to provide world-class facilities for our customers. Club Secretaries/Managers invariably come into the industry with strong skill-sets and the comprehensive training programme can now supplement those.” • www.cmaeurope.org • t. 01247 669 2359

LATE NIGHT LEVY & EARLY MORNING RESTRICTION ORDER – PART 2 In the last issue we examined the current picture with regard to Early Morning Restriction Orders (EMROs). I had hoped to provide you with further information regarding the Blackpool EMRO but nothing has been decided and the current position is best described as a ‘work in progress’. Further update will be provided just as soon as I have news. In the meantime...

EMROS were only part of the initiative announced by the current Government and their determination to change the profile of the late night economy. The Late Night Levy (LNL) was also proposed as being almost a payback scheme to Licensing Authorities and in particular the Police for their services in the high street of those towns who continue to have any form of late night economy. There has been reluctance by some Police Authorities to say how their share of the levy (70%) would be spent. Policing has a wide meaning and a photocopier or paperclips are needed in the pursuit of good policing but do not reflect the spirit of the reason for collecting a levy to pay for policing. Significantly - and totally differently to the EMRO - the LNL is Licensing Authoritywide and encapsulates the small rural pub as well as the vibrant night time economy on the high street. Current fee levels are based upon the non-domestic rateable value of the premises. As we will see, the Licensing Authority who has adopted the measure offered a discount based upon criteria they set, not nationally accepted due diligence criteria which we believed would be relevant to the discount structure for the LNL. The current position is:

APPROVED Newcastle upon Tyne Newcastle upon Tyne went out to consultation in April 2013 and had their proposal for the levy approved. The implementation date was 1 November, 2013, to cover all premises in their authority who operate between the hours of midnight and 06:00 daily Monday to Sunday. If the only day on the licence or certificate to benefit from later sales of alcohol is New Year’s Eve this is exempt from the levy now payable by the late night economy in Newcastle. Newcastle City Council offer up to a 30% reduction based upon a Best Practice Scheme. The Council, in partnership with the Police, are in the process of developing such

8

clubmirror

a scheme which will involve a Late Night Levy Board that includes representatives of the licensing trade. In order to benefit from the scheme, operators had to join - or request that they be joined - by 18 October, 2013.

UNDER CONSULTATION YET TO BE DETERMINED Cheltenham The Consultation period has ended and the proposal will be considered at a full Council meeting on 16 December, 2013. The proposed hours to be caught by the levy are 00:01am to 6am daily. Unlike Newcastle there are to be no exemptions (although that is the proposal at this stage). The automatic right to operate and sell alcohol from the start of trading on New Year’s Eve until the start of trading on New Year’s Day (if identified on the licence or certificate) will attract the levy fee in exactly the same way as an operator who opens every evening until 6am the next day. The City of London Corporation The Consultation process ended on 6 September, 2013. The proposed hours for the levy were to be either midnight or 1am until 6am. (No firm decision had been made or identified in the Consultation). Accordingly, the Licensing Committee are currently considering another Consultation which will clarify the hours. The Committee is due to meet in February 2014 and, if a decision is made to consult again, it could commence in May 2014. Islington Consultation is in process with a deadline for responses of 31 January, 2014. The proposed time which would be caught is midnight until 6am daily. The only exemption will be for premises which have the permission on their licence to open from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day. A public Council meeting to consider the responses is to be held on 27 February, 2014.

Plymouth The Consultation period ended on 5 October, 2013. An exemption is proposed for New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day opening and the hours specified to come within the levy period are 30 minutes after midnight until 6am. Currently there is no date for discussion by the Council of this proposal other than that it will be scheduled in the New Year. Tameside The Consultation period ended on 5 November, 2013. The period during which the Late Night Levy would engage is between 00:01am and 6am daily. Whilst the Council is proposing not to exempt any premises from the requirement to pay the levy, they have specified that they would be proposing an exemption for premises which are licensed to supply alcohol during the late night supply period on New Year’s Eve only. No further information is available in respect of further discussion of the results of the Consultation and these are expected to be identified in the New Year. York The Consultation period ended on 31 October, 2013. The time period proposed is from midnight until 6am and the Council had proposed to introduce the levy on 1 April, 2014. This time frame is based upon York City Council’s consideration of the responses to the Consultation on 3 December by Cabinet and on 12 December by full Council. It is understood that the consideration by the Cabinet has been deferred until 4 March, 2014, with potentially consideration by the full Council on 27 March, 2014. The slippage in consideration of the levy proposals would almost certainly lead to a slippage in the commencement date should the full Council decide to support the proposal.

PRE-CONSULTATION Bath The Licensing Authority held a scrutiny day

on 10 October, 2013, to consider its options in respect of future strategies and the potential for implementation of both the LNL or an EMRO. A steering group from the Authority will consider the recommendations in November and a final report will be submitted by January 2014 to the Cabinet for their consideration. Bristol A meeting held on 23 May, 2013, to listen to views about the LNL did not arrive at any decision in respect of adopting or consultation for the LNL. Further recent information from the Licensing Authority confirms that the LNL proposal is now no longer being considered and they are currently assessing the potential for a BID scheme. Camden Both EMRO and LNL Pre-Consultation ended in January, 2013. However, there appears to be a log jam as the Licensing Authority would like to have confirmation from the Metropolitan Police about how they would intend to spend the income that is generated from a levy within the Borough of Camden. This to date is still awaited and there is no further progress in respect of the LNL. Chelmsford The Licensing Authority had considered a voluntary contribution scheme as an alternative to the LNL. However, this was rejected by local businesses en masse. More recently the Authority has confirmed its intention to consult with a potential implementation date of April, 2014 – although that date may now slip because of the statutory process the Licensing Authority must adopt prior to the implementation of the LNL. Cheshire East A report is to be considered at a public meeting on 14 January, 2014. This following a meeting of the cabinet of the Council on 17 September, 2013.

www.clubmirror.com

Lambeth Lambeth Council is currently consulting on an EMRO for a limited area but are also considering the levy as part of the Licensing Policy Review with public opinion requested in respect of its implementation. Liverpool The Licensing Authority confirms that consideration was given to the proposal for an adoption of a LNL on April 24, 2013. At that time they were tasked with generating the levy figures and potential income which would be generated as a result. At some point the figures will be discussed before the Committee. No dates of such a meeting are currently available, however. Leeds Following several Committee reports, the Scrutiny Panel recommended on 18 November, 2013, that the Executive Board of the Council not pursue the introduction of the LNL and proposed, as an alternative, that the Authority develop initiatives with the trade in respect of a BID. The Executive Board will convene a public meeting on 18 December,

www.clubmirror.com

2013, to consider whether the Scrutiny Panel should be approved or rejected. Nottingham Nottingham City Council has confirmed that the Authority is considering a LNL. However, any proposals for Consultation have yet to be agreed. Southampton Any work on Pre-Consultation for a LNL is still some way away and the Licensing Authority has confirmed that it would prefer to continue to work with the trade as this would be preferential to any adoption of a LNL. A report, however, will be submitted to the Committee and will contain a thorough assessment of the benefits and disadvantages of the levy.

REJECTED Woking The Licensing Committee convened on 15 October, 2013, and voted not to introduce either a LNL or an EMRO at this time. Milton Keynes The Consultation period ended on 18 May,

2013, and the proposal was rejected by the Licensing Sub Committee on 29 August, 2013. This was followed by the full Council rejecting the LNL proposal on 23 October, 2013. In summary, support for a LNL is mixed. The appetite for the Licensing Authority to implement the LNL has to be balanced against the increased administration which would be required. And since revenues can only ever be as a maximum 30% of the total revenue accrued, a lot of Licensing Authorities have realised that 30% of a little bit is an even smaller bit! They have, therefore, decided not to consider further any implementation. Critical mass of licensed premises who operate post-midnight is a crucial factor. I am aware of at least one major pub company which issued minor variations for its portfolio of premises in Newcastle to avoid having to pay the levy (with the exception of New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day trading which is exempted by Newcastle City Council from a requirement to pay the levy).

CAMRA ran the festival for us for the fifth year running, handling popular favourites and more obscure brews. But we’ll let the guests, suppliers, sponsors – and beers – tell their own story.

building the business – spotlight on Wales THE BIZZ CLUB Carmarthen Established over 55 years ago as the Carmarthen Businessmen’s Club, the club was first renamed The Bizz Club and relaunched last year as simply ‘The Bizz’. Open days were announced to encourage members of the public to step inside the club doors (The Bizz can now welcome non-members) as well as to encourage frequency of visits from existing members. Darts are an integral part of Camarthen social life, and The Bizz both puts up teams and hosts others, such as the Men’s Summer League which rounded off their 28th season with their finals and presentations at the club.

PEMBROKE DOCK BOWLING CLUB Pembroke Dock

CONWY ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Conwy Conwy RBL’s refurbished bar provides a spacious yet cosy and friendly place to socialise. It has two screens (which can show two different channels at the same time) as well as gaming machines, pool and darts. A typical weekend at the large club might include a comedy night in the concert room and a mobile cinema in the club’s car park. Charity fundraising is a major focus, including a sponsored walk of Offa’s Dyke – all 177 miles of it – in aid of the Poppy Appeal, raising £3761.90 to date. Sponsored car washes and coffee mornings are also tried and tested revenue raisers. A function room holding up to 200 people has a large

drop down TV screen, stage, dance floor area and sound equipment. Membership is £14 per annum and £3 for an electronic entrance fob.

TENBY SAILING CLUB Tenby

Pembroke Dock Bowling Club opens each season with the rolling of the silver jack. This tradition began at the club’s inception in 1925 when the Mayor (Councillor W.G. Lloyd; pictured above) was presented with a Silver Jack. With this, he formally opened the bowling green in Memorial Park. Nearly 90 years later this tradition continues. The past remains a springboard for the future and the club is thriving with an extended clubhouse and a Ladies team which recently won the County Ladies Championship for the eighth time. Life member Brian Dowling opens Pembroke Dock Bowling Club’s 2013 season with the traditional Silver Jack.

Tenby Sailing Club was founded in 1936 to ‘develop, encourage and provide facilities for the sailing of boats for sport and to promote fellowship between members’. Today it continues true to these original aims and organises racing and regattas, events and social functions, from live music to team quizzes and Christmas parties for kids and adults. The club hosts a National competition each year, and fosters a large junior section with sail training every Wednesday evening. This focus is seeing the club become a venue for the Junior social scene. The club bar is popular and offers real ale plus a broad wine selection. Home cooked food is available most weekends during

the season and for red letter days such as New Year’s Eve (four Course Dinner, £25 per person). The Clubhouse is regularly used during the summer for outside social events, and last year helped cater for an episode of the BBC’s Don’t Tell The Bride (pictured). Membership ranges from £10 - £50.

THE GREMLIN CLUB Carmarthen The Gremlin Club became home to the County RAFA Club in the 1950s. In October last year, a new group was launched at the club, set up to support ex-service personnel and their families. The town’s MP Simon Hart threw his weight behind the project which sees the club become a place where ex-service personnel and their families can access advice, support, and signposting to the relevant support agencies. It is also being supported by the Royal British Legion, Royal Naval Association and Veterans Agency as well as from West Wales Action for Mental Health and Mind.

www.clubmirror.com

Tenby’s earliest reports of rugby date back to 1876. There were several sides playing back then, one of which was the Swifts who gained membership of the then Welsh Football Union. Fast forward to 1901,and a coming together of Tenby Swifts and Tenby Harlequins saw the formation of Tenby United. Today the club has a thriving fixtures list, with players from Under 7s up to Seniors, and a buzzing clubhouse right in the heart of Tenby. Adept at engaging its members, this summer saw the club hold a Task Force Day, calling on members to join in a day of action – from pruning to painting. The club enlisted the help of Nat West and the WRU (Welsh Rugby Union) who sponsored the day, along with the support of Valero (the Pembrokeshire refinery). Local company Talbot Timber provided sponsored materials. The club uses lottery draws as fundraisers, inviting people to become a lottery member for £60 per annum. The draws are held on the last Saturday of every month with a 1st prize of £500, 2nd prize of £250 and 3rd prize of £150. Standard membership is £35. Last month, the senior squad was filmed as part of a Wales-wide kicking challenge for rugby-legend Jonathan Davies’ show, Jonathan. Davies and crew travel around Wales filming at rugby clubs who pick six players to kick a ball through the posts as many times as possible in 20 seconds. Extra points are awarded for hitting a big picture of International Referee Nigel Owens, hung on the crossbar!

Entertainment at the large club includes fundraising events, such as this year’s Poppy Appeal (a seventies charity night with disco and live entertainment), and the club acts as a venue for other local association and groups, such as the Dyfed Smallholders Association.

This month we examine the fortunes of sports clubs around the country with the help of our friends at the Sport and Recreation Alliance who conducted an extensive survey into rising costs, financial sustainability and revenues. The good news? Sports clubs have, on average, been experiencing a 21% increase in adult memberships since 2011. Also this month - dare we say New Year’s resolutions? Have you made any? Do they work for club business? Or are they just another rod to beat ourselves up with? Top advice comes from across the pond.

SPORTS CLUBS INCREASING MEMBERSHIP The 2013 Sports Club Survey from the Sport and Recreation Alliance has highlighted an emerging trend of grassroots sports clubs spending considerably more on energy bills, business rates and facility maintenance in recent years, whilst reducing average fees and providing great value to more members. The Sport and Recreation Alliance’s survey reveals that the average facility hiring or long-term leasing club spent £6,570 on outdoor facility maintenance in 2012, a 33% increase compared to what they spent in 2011. Clubs also spent 23% more on indoor facility maintenance, 38% more on water rates, 19% more on gas, 10% more on electricity and 20% more on business rates in 2012 compared to 2011. This comes as 41% of clubs said that financial sustainability was a challenge they were currently concerned about or likely to face in the next two years. From 2007 to 2012, club income increased by 6% while expenditure increased by 14%, showing that clubs are still not as financially healthy as they were in 2007 before the UK economic recession. Tim Lamb, chief executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance said: “Club spending increases reflect the general financial pinch that’s being felt by many out there as the cost of living, particularly energy prices, rise whilst wages stay stagnant. The figures also suggest that in recent years there has been a need for clubs to use a large proportion of their income to modernise facilities that may have been getting tatty or even falling into disrepair.” Clubs keeping membership fees low In spite of clubs’ increased financial pressures, the Alliance’s report also highlights how clubs have been working hard not to pass these cost increases on to their

members and continue to deliver outstanding value for money. Lamb said: “For the average club, the participating

adult annual membership fee has increased by only £8 (11%) since 2008 and actually decreased by 3.9% in 2012 compared to 2011. Clubs have been making themselves affordable at a time when their members have been experiencing cost of living rises in other areas of their lives. They also kept themselves attractive and accessible to new members over the Games period.” Membership levels on the rise Keeping membership fees low seems to have had a positive effect on membership levels, with clubs experiencing a 21% increase in adult memberships since 2011. “This is the first time there has been an upward trend in membership figures since 2007 which is really promising, although there is still a need for caution,” said Lamb. “Adult membership levels are still below what they were in 2007 and junior membership levels have only risen by a modest 8.4% since 2007. But all in all, clubs have been doing a fantastic job in driving up participation over the Games period and beyond.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS – HELP OR HINDRANCE? American coach and speaker Dave Ferguson shares his thoughts on the value - or otherwise - of New Year’s resolutions. “If you are one of those people who sit down in December and make a list of things you’re going to do differently in the next year, or how you’re going to change, or how you’re going to lead in business more...stop right now! Lists - or as most people call them in December, “resolutions” - are useless without proper focus and a deliberate mindset. Once you have those two things, you still need to develop action plans. But wait, you’re not done yet. What about executing your plans? Scary, isn’t it? This year, I am challenging you to try something new. If you’re willing to do that, continue on with me. If you’re not, good luck with your lottery ticket! You see, I don’t like seeing busy people waste their time and energy on activities that are fruitless. Do you realise that less than 1% of the people that make New Year’s Resolutions execute on them? Let me tell you why I believe most people fail at this type of setting resolutions process: 1. They get too greedy with their resolutions. Don’t take on too many big ticket resolutions. What most people end up doing is stretching themselves too thin, and they end up making no progress at all. I have found

that the best approach is to pick a few biggies and a few smaller resolutions; then, spread the execution of these throughout the year. Don’t start them all on January 1st!

results at all. Write them down, and your chances of succeeding are much higher.

2. They don’t make their resolutions personal. Get personal! What will it mean to you if you can achieve these goals? How will you feel when you achieve them? If you can’t give clear answers to these questions, chances are you don’t want them badly enough to execute on them all year. Get clear about the significance of your resolutions... crystal clear! 3. They actually don’t write them down. Can you believe this? How can you be crystal clear if you don’t even write down your goals for the year? If you don’t write them down, they will always remain vague ideas and plans. Normally, that equals poor to no

4. They don’t make their resolutions visual. Even people who write them down rarely create an environment where they are less likely to forget about their goals. Put your resolutions in a place where you will be able to see them frequently. Put them in several places. I keep mine in my portfolio, in my computer, on my desk, and in my kitchen. I also carry a handy little planner that I supply to each person who attends my quarterly strategy sessions. Everybody loves them because they can fit in a guy’s pocket or a gal’s purse. 5. They don’t review their resolutions often enough. If you’re serious about making changes and/or progress, you have to review them periodically to check your progress. Just as pilots have to check and adjust flight plans, so must we with our business and life plans. Makes sense doesn’t it? • More from Dave next month. “Clubs play such a vital role in their local communities in terms of getting people healthy and active, keeping them happy, reducing crime and encouraging social cohesion. This is why things like local authority rate relief and tax breaks for clubs are vital. They take the financial pressure off clubs so that they can focus on the important stuff growth and increasing participation in sport and physical activity.” • For more information call 020 7976 3933 or visit www.sportandrecreation.org.uk

promotion – Club Insure Ltd

WELCOME TO CLUB INSURE LTD A new location and a new image but Club Insure Ltd guarantee that it is business as usual and by that they mean award winning. or those people who are still not aware of their name, Club Insure Ltd mean business. Originally a subgroup of NDML Ltd, established since 1998, Club Insure was launched in 2011 to deal specifically with sports and social clubs. Due to remarkable success both in the local and national market, they have rebranded as Club Insure Ltd. Their aim is to be recognised as the market leader and if their accolades and affiliation with respected associations are anything to go by, then they are certainly heading in the right direction. Within the last 12 months they have been appointed the preferred insurance broker for The Association of Conservative Clubs, Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation and The National Union of Liberal Clubs, in recognition of their experience, comprehensive cover and outstanding customer service. “I cannot recommend Club Insure highly enough. I

would suggest that any complex network such as ours, utilise the help of a specialist insurance broker such as Club Insure. Their strength of service and professionalism is outstanding and the relationship that I have built with them is

CASE STUDY Timperley Conservative and Social Club Mr M Patterson “Club Insure contacted me ahead of the insurance renewal in 2012. In the first instance, Club Insure guarantee to visit all potential clients and subsequently every year at renewal time. This impressed me from the start, rather than everything being done over the phone or by email. On the first visit, Club Insure take the time to run through your existing policy at length and tailor it to suit the club’s requirements. The company representatives are exceedingly knowledgeable and thorough in their approach. They highlight all areas of improvements including enhancements to cover, thus coupled with an incredibly competitive premium, I could not see any valid reason why I should not transfer my cover to Club Insure and wasted no time in doing so. Unfortunately whilst covered with our previous broker, we were forced to submit two claims. Both were incredibly stressful experiences; time consuming and initially rejected. Now, however, as part of our new tailored package, NDML Assist provides a loss adjuster in the event of a claim over £5000 (excluding liability claims). In the event of any future claims, we feel assured that NDML Assist and the experienced in-house claims handler at Club Insure, will be on hand to support us with a dedicated loss adjuster working on our behalf. We are now one year on and have just received a renewal visit from Club Insure to run through the policy again and discuss any changes. It was an ideal opportunity for our Treasurer to meet with them and review the forthcoming year.

28

clubmirror

This gives us complete peace of mind. On this second visit we procured the Club Insure Risk Management package. We have found it extremely user friendly and most significantly for us, a fantastic tool for supporting our club’s health and safety policies. There is the facility to downloaded template forms that can be used on a daily basis to support the running of the club and it also provides helpful advice on HR issues and legislation. The manner in which Club Insure conduct their business is refreshing and I would not hesitate to recommend them to other Conservative Clubs.”

reassuring on a personal basis. I am delighted to be associated with Club Insure,” said Mr J Dunn, Ashington Joint Welfare Scheme. Club Insure Ltd boasts transparency and honest advice as the key elements to their success. They pride themselves on their knowledge and understanding of sports and social clubs and the difficulties they face on a day to day basis. In recent years both legislation changes and economic pressures have had an overwhelming effect on the industry and in turn, created a substantial amount of extra work for club committees. Club Insure Ltd want to ease at least one of those pressures and as such guarantee a pain free, professional insurance service from beginning to end. “They really did guide me through the entire process seamlessly with no pressure or difficulty. I recommend them whole heartedly,” said Mrs C Walden, Abertillery Workmen’s Welfare Institute. There is an exhaustive list of reasons (too many to mention!) why Club Insure Ltd continue to stand apart from the rest of the market. Amongst others they are aware that due to the variety of social establishments it is necessary to treat everyone as an individual, consequently bespoke policies, underwritten by a panel of ‘A’ rated UK based insurers, are tailor-made to suit specific requirements. Whilst their competitors have resorted to a telephone service to reduce costs, Club Insure Ltd uphold that the most successful business relations are forged face to face, thus one of their experienced Account Executive’s from their national team guarantee to visit each club in person. In doing so they are able to meet with all necessary club officials, identify possible gaps in cover, explain the cover conditions and warranties and ensure they understand what is required to be fully compliant with the terms of the policy. “Everyone involved at the Petts Wood Royal British Legion has been extremely impressed with the service provided by the staff at Club Insure. We are very happy with the levels of cover they provide and the quote was very competitive." Mrs Grinter, Petts Wood Royal British Legion. In addition, Club Insure Ltd provide an experienced inhouse, award winning claims department and dedicated account handlers who, in the event of a claim, offer compassion, guidance and support from beginning to end; Club Insure Ltd literally have everything covered. “The aftercare supplied by Club Insure Ltd following a recent claim, far exceeded my expectations. Having worked for an insurance company myself for many years, I had high expectations for the quality of service I should receive and they far superseded them,” said Mr Butterfield, Idle Cricket Club. It is therefore not difficult to understand why in the past year the company has been nominated for no less than four awards. They successfully won the UK Claims Excellence Award for Customer Care Initiative of the Year and were highly commended in the UK Broker Awards for Schemes Broker of the Year. Furthermore, as finalists in the British Insurance Awards for Commercial Lines Broker of the UK SME/MID Corporate and the Insurance Times Awards for Claims Initiative of the Year, Club Insure Ltd has set its sights on the prize for next year already! As an award winning company you would expect business to be booming and indeed it is. Club Insure Ltd currently look after over 2000 clubs in the UK and their market share is increasing month on month. To cope with demand and maintain their professional yet personable business mentality, it is only natural that the Club Insure Ltd family

grows at the same rate, hence the recent relocation to larger office space adjacent to the Leeds Bradford Airport. The new site is double the size of the previous head office in Horsforth and much more suited to accommodate an award winning operation. It offers quick and easy access to Leeds and Bradford city centres and motorway networks, meaning they can service current and future clients even more effectively. Simon Mabb, Managing Director, said of the move: “The growth trajectory we have been on has been amazing over the last few years and we had run out of space. The new office really gives us the opportunity to kick on and continue that trajectory developing the businesses further over the coming years.” Justin Romero-Trigo, chairmen added: “We have a great team working for us and it is important we have the facilities and working environment to continue to attract the best people no matter which office in the group they work from.” If their recent form alone is anything to go by, then Club Insure is here for the long haul. Mr R Betteridge from Lea Hall Colliery MWS, one of their many satisfied clients, summed up Club Insure Ltd when he said: “They truly are stalwarts of the insurance industry.”

For those of you who couldn’t join us in Manchester last month, this is for you.

Welcome to the 2013 Club Awards.

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and a very warm welcome to the Palace Hotel and the 2013 Club Awards. These Awards are now in their 21st year and are designed to recognise and reward the very best in the club sector. Every finalist here tonight truly represents the very best in the UK and congratulations to each and every one of you for making it this far. I know that many of you have travelled from afar to join us, and others have sacrificed a busy Thursday night at the club to be here so we thank all off you. We also thank and welcome the club-supporting sponsors who are proud to be part of clubland and are offering their support and experience to help the club sector thrive, which – as you all prove – it is. Judging this year has been the most intense and hotly debated ever. From over 12,000 potential winners we whittled this down to just under one thousand actual contenders and finally to the 120 finalists we see in this room tonight. These Awards are about excellence, and all of the finalists here, regardless of size, reflect that. To be in this room is a remarkable achievement – particularly given the backdrop of legislation, the Late Night Levy, Early Morning Restriction Orders, rising energy costs and of course fierce competition for the precious leisure pound. Every part of clubland is represented here tonight – from individual clubs to associations and industry bodies – three of these alone account for 16,000 outlets. Our biggest club in this room turns over £14 million and our smallest club just over £100 thousand, so we welcome a truly broad representation of clubland here tonight. Very sincere thanks as always to our sponsors, who have again gone out of their way to ensure this is a special night and a night you will remember – some of their commitment you have already seen, whether that’s having your picture taken with the Challenge Cup trophy or a welcome pint or

BOOTHSTOWN ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Judges’ comments: “Boothstown RBL works hard to help others see the club as a community resource. As a result, the function room is booked six months in advance. Just one big community event is the annual June Festival Day with stalls, fairground rides, drinks and food attracting upwards of 800 people. The club moves with the times and casts its net wide for members, reaping the benefits with an influx of younger members revitalising the club. Five years ago this club was on the brink of closure; now it’s a solid cornerstone of the local community.”

BT Sport’s Jon Crownshaw (second from right) congratulates Boothstown RBL and Littleport Leisure Community Centre.

JOINT WINNER

LITTLEPORT LEISURE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Judges’ comments: “Littleport’s 800 members raise a lot of money for local charities and other local clubs. It extends its facilities to the rest of the community – a local nursery school has relocated to the 36 acre site, for example. Live bands, family discos and battle of the DJs are all part of the mix, and the Royal Shakespeare Company has performed here five times. The centre has a fitness suite, squash court, sports hall, tennis/netball courts and a floodlit football pitch. Its annual fun day welcomed 1500 people this year. A monthly newsletter is sent to members, the club has a web site and 2,500 friends on facebook.”

Adderley Green Working Men’s Club Judges’ comments: “Amy Rushton saved £9k on salaries within six months of arriving at the club. Since then, she has undertaken risk assessment training (including how to adjust working practises for two pregnant members of staff) and re-negotiated with the brewery to increase frequency of delivery as well as a buy-one-get-one-free barrel promotion. She has undertaken First Aid and Fire Training in her own time and, when the club decided it should have a defibrillator on site (as a precaution for heart attack victims), she contacted the British Heart Foundation who supplied the club with a free machine. In August Amy received top marks following a visit from environmental services.”

“I think it is fantastic how well we have done and is absolutely brilliant, particularly when you realise how stiff the competition was. It is equivalent to winning an “Oscar” in our industry. It is also a fitting reward for all the hard work that has been put in by the members of our committee together with our Treasurer, Phil Gibbs and our Secretary, David Slack as well as the amazing support of our members, the Bar Steward Sarah Holley and the Bar staff, Sue, Serena, Darren, Debbie, Simon & Claire, who work tirelessly to make the club the success it is.” Richard Jones Club Chairman , Tiverton Constitutional Club

“It was one of the most memorable evenings I have ever had and it was fantastic. I am still buzzing from the experience and it is a tribute to the management of the club and its members; all of whom make the club what it is.” Club Member Brian Lane –Smith Club Member, Tiverton Constitutional Club
