leader Clubs, we salute you!

Well what a year! Not only have we witnessed the biggest and best Club Awards to date, but we’ve also seen the official launch of Sports4Bars.com and Club Rugby as well as the first prototype edition of our latest concept Sports Club Magazine. (And there's more to follow next year. Watch this space!) So here we are in December with a solid year behind us, ready to spring into 2015 with high hopes and great expectations. And if the 2014 Club Awards are anything to go by, none of us will be disappointed. The ingenuity and commitment of club officials and members were there to be seen in all their glory at the Awards in Manchester on 20 November. All of the clubs, gathered together under that one roof on that one night, proved yet again that clubs not only remain a hub for their local communities but are flourishing. (And as pubs sadly continue to close their doors for the last time, clubs are ever more in the ascendant.) It’s no coincidence that the average age of our 2014 Club Awards finalists was well over 100 years, which brought us all to a natural eye-smarting recognition of their role in the World Wars. For those of you unable to join us at the 2014 Awards, we invite you to re-live the night ‘by proxy’ (see pages 25-58). Congratulations to each and every club reading this – Club Awards finalist or not – for always being there for your members and your communities. From all of us to all of you – here’s to a happy and healthy 2015.

A WORD WITH...

PHIL ‘THE POWER’ TAYLOR Sky Sports Darts launches on December 18, providing over 370 hours of programming, including live coverage of the William Hill World Darts Championship. And with the PDC World Championship just around the corner and a whole host of international talent stepping up to the oche once again, sister title Sport4Bars spoke to 14-times World Champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and found him in buoyant mood ahead of his bid to reclaim the crown. Any players apart from the obvious that you’re wary of this time around? Who can you see making an impact? Do you know, there are some cracking little players in there: Dave Chisnall’s one; young Keegan Brown pleasantly surprised me, recently; then the usual suspects such as Barney [Raymond van Barneveld] who might just pull the plug out in this one and play well. James Wade’s playing well, Gary Anderson too. I think it’ll be a great championship!

Club Mirror’s Beer Festival goes down a treat

On November 20 Club Mirror hosted its 6th Hail the Ale Beer Festival and Trade Show in Copper Face Jack’s pub at the Palace Hotel, Manchester. Marston’s and Carlsberg UK once again pulled out the stops with CAMRA handling the set up and service to ensure that the range of beers were poured to perfection. Club-supporting suppliers were on hand to provide useful advice and field questions from visitors. • Turn to pages 11- 16 for more details.

Obviously losing the title was bitterly disappointing but how would you sum up 2014 for you as a player in terms of the high points? I changed sponsors last year so I changed all my equipment, so getting used to that took me a few months. But to win four or five majors isn’t bad! Obviously there’s room for improvement and we’ll work on that going into next year. What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? It’s got to be the big one – the World Championships. But I’ve loved all of them, really, every tournament that you win has got a certain thing about it; but actually I think that the World Matchplay in Blackpool’s been my favourite one as far as playing in tournament goes. Who would you say has been the biggest influence on your success as the best player in the world, if anyone? On the board it would have to be Eric Bristow [Taylor played darts at Bristow’s pub in Burslem, Staffordshire, where he lived, and Bristow sponsored Taylor early in his career] and off the board it would have to be my mother. Predictions for players to watch out for in 2015? Obviously [current PDC World Champion] Michael van Gerwen plus players like Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis and Barney – he’s always there or thereabouts – they’re all not daft when the World Championship comes about. But in other players, there’s Terry Jenkins and James Wade playing well so they could also be ones to watch next year.

Jimmy bowls into the brewery England cricketer James Anderson paid a visit to Marston’s Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent to mark the start of a 12-month-long ambassadorial role with the brewer. After the tour James was joined

by another fast bowler, ex-England player Steve Harmison, for a question and answer session at the Visitor’s Centre in front of an invited audience of staff and customers. James said: “I was amazed to

learn that there was so much that went into brewing beer – it was a fascinating insight.” Marston’s have been associated with English cricket at a national level since 2007.

Club Awards prove a roaring success On November 20, clubs and associations from around the country converged on the Palace Hotel in Manchester to take part in Club Mirror’s 22nd annual Club Awards, hosted by sports presenter John Inverdale. With well over 600 guests attending, a drinks reception courtesy of Carlsberg UK, celebrity appearances from both the FA Cup and the Aviva Premiership Cup (courtesy of BT Sport) and a spectacular Gala Dinner (a special thanks to Booker Wholesale for their menu input), the event has been deemed a great success! But don’t take our word for it. Turn to pages 25-58 of this issue to relive the excitement of the spectacular night.

BRANDS NEWS MID-SEASONS GREETINGS FROM CARLSBERG Carlsberg UK have launched a ‘Mid Season’s Greetings’ festive campaign offering consumers the chance to win fantastic prizes throughout December, including Barclays Premier League tickets, branded gifts and footballrelated rewards. The campaign is set to reach 1.6 billion consumers in the UK and globally through digital advertising, with online ads on the Sky Sports homepage in addition to a takeover of the Mail Online sport web page. ANTI-DRINK DRIVING CAMPAIGN This year’s Christmas anti-drink driving campaign from Pernod Ricard UK and the AA will be fronted by a brand from the premium spirit company’s portfolio for the first time ever – Jameson Irish Whiskey. The decision was made in order to effectively target the Jameson brand’s young adult audience, by delivering the serious nature of the message in a visually engaging way.

Simon Martin, Carlsberg’s Regional Sales Director (London and South East), said:

rich heritage like our own brand and company. This will allow us to provide Arsenal supporters at Emirates Stadium with Carlsberg products as part of their match-day experience and further cement our position as the beer brand of football.” The partnership with Arsenal further strengthens the Carlsberg brand’s involvement with football at all levels across Europe and the UK, from the professional game through to grassroots.

CCE’S DESIGNATED DRIVER CAMPAIGN Coca-Cola Enterprises’ (CCE) Designated Driver Scheme is back. Around 12,500 licensees with be participating and the latest campaign is backed by radio advertising across 240 commercial stations. The latest campaign will run with the slogan, ‘Cheers for being a hero’ to give thanks for the often unsung role of designated drivers. OLD SPECKLED HEN GETS NEW LOOK Greene King’s Old Speckled Hen has undergone a redesign in a move that it is hoped will reach out to a new generation of beer drinkers. The revamp includes new pump clips and beer handles, alongside PoS with a marketing investment of £2 million. J20 BRING JOY WITH NEW AD CAMPAIGN Soft drinks brand J20, owned by Britvic, have launched a new advertising campaign, with the slogan, ‘There’s Joy in the Blend.’ The campaign focuses on mixing fruits together to make “something amazing” which it is hoped will create a boost for adult soft drinks.

LEGISLATION, LEGISLATION, LEGISLATION! “I cannot believe another year is almost over (and that the 2014 Club Awards have been and gone; what a thoroughly enjoyable and heart stopping evening!),” reflects Nick Walton.

This has been an exciting year in many ways, not least because everyone I talk to is much more confident about the future. (Witness the 2014 Club Awards for proof of that!) There have been lots of dark days and it appears that whatever the mood, the Government continues in many ways to shackle the operation of licensed premises. Usually Secondary Legislation (the bits that change regularly) are issued in April and October. This year I seem to have had new legislation to talk about every month. Firstly, please do not forget about the legislation regarding food and the requirement to know and be able to advise what is in the food you serve. In relation to allergens, the legislation comes into force on 13 December 2014 and I hope you are making the necessary adjustments to enable both you and your staff to be aware of their new responsibilities in that area. I attended a meeting recently where we discussed the new Mandatory Conditions which came into force on 1 October 2014. (I wrote about these changes in the November edition.) There has been a lot of concern expressed about the changes – this not to include the irresponsible promotion changes, as probably 99.5% of the licensed premises do not have, and have not been involved in, promotions which promote or glorify the consumption of alcohol to excess. The major concerns relate to the area of the sale of alcohol at the point of the sale. One attendee highlighted the requirement to advise the customer of the availability of smaller measures for wine, beer, cider and lager. Apparently he had been admonished by a visitor to his premises as a request for a popular type of lager and been followed by ‘we sell that in pints and in half pints’. The visitor then said that the measures should be identified by the smaller volume first (i.e. the half pint before the pint); I think every premises has a customer who knows better than the licensee! With respect this is utter nonsense. The

8

clubmirror

requirement of the Mandatory Condition is that: Where a customer does not in relation to the sale of alcohol specify the quantity of alcohol to be sold, the customer is made aware that these measures are available. Be careful, however, to ensure that all of your staff are aware of the requirement; beware of enthusiastic Enforcement Officers who might relish the opportunity of catching those who are either unaware or forget to ask! Commencement no. 7 Another piece of secondary legislation made its debut on 20 October 2014 – The Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 (Commencement no. 7) Order 2014. This introduced changes to ASBOs, dispersal powers and community protection amongst other issues. Criminal Behaviour Orders will replace ASBOs where a conviction is involved or Crime Prevention injunctions for other cases. A new instrument called the Community Protection Notice has been introduced; its breadth is quite wide and covers, for example, litter on the highway. If your club has facilities for smoking at the front door on the public highway you should be ensuring that any of the materi-

als that are used when your patrons go outside to smoke are placed in an appropriate receptacle. If the Local Authority is continuing to be tasked with the requirement to clear up your patrons’ litter, a Premises Licence Holder can be issued with a Community Protection Notice and in the case of a Private Members’ Club, the Committee as a body can be issued with a Community Protection Notice to ensure that the litter that is created is cleaned up. In extreme circumstances where continued requests to clean up are ignored, the Local Authority can resort to prosecution and if convicted in the Magistrates’ Court, a fine can be levied up to £20,000. A Section 27 Notice (of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006) was a popular tool used by Police Officers to rid an area of potentially disruptive individuals. These have been replaced by a direction that a person be excluded from a specific area – for example if the Constable who issues the direction believes that the behaviour of the person has contributed to members of the public in the locality being harassed, alarmed or distressed and/or occurrence in the locality of crime and disorder. Whilst the section appears to be much wider in

If you have any questions about this article or any of the topics written by Legal Eagle Nick Walton, please do not hesitate to contact him on 07824 465 531. scope, I believe that it is almost a mirror of the old Section 27 and continues to have a duration that cannot exceed 48 hours. In that respect the powers are very similar. Overall, the thrust of the new Secondary legislation is meant to focus on the response to anti-social behaviour and the needs of victims, to support people at high risk of harm, giving front line professionals more freedom to do what they know works. Empowering communities to get involved in tackling anti-social behaviour and holding agencies to account shows that individuals, victims and communities have the power to ensure that action is taken to deal with persistent anti-social behaviour through what will be known as the Community Trigger. Overall the legislation contains some very useful ideas. However, the proof of whether they will work for the community remains to be seen. Engaging with not only the perpetrators but also the victims will be a test to determine whether the legislation will be successful or not. One final reminder for those who have Personal Licences which are expiring in early 2015; have you considered renewing your application yet? A happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year to you all. Thank you for reading – and hopefully enjoying! – the column!

CLUB MIRROR IN ACTION Welcome to Club Mirror’s 2014 Ask the Experts - Live and Hail the Ale Beer Festival.

or those who couldn’t join us at our 2014 Ask the Experts – Live trade show, and for those who missed out on our annual Beer Festival, these pages are for you. Here we recreate these two events which proved enjoyable and informative, thanks to the club experts on hand who offered sound business advice as well as showcasing new products. A big thank you too goes to our real ale brewers with particular reference to long-term sponsors Marston’s Beer Company who provided Marston’s Pedigree, EPA and Cumberland Ale, and to Carlsberg UK through whom all other ales were provided. CAMRA ran the festival for us for the sixth year running, handling popular favourites and more obscure brews. But we’ll let the guests, suppliers, sponsors – and beers – tell their own story.

The PDC World Darts Championship gets underway. Since its establishment 20 years ago, only six players have won this competition: Dennis Priestley, Phil Taylor, John Part, Raymond van Barneveld, Adrian Lewis and defending champion Michael van Gerwen.

Quite simply the pinnacle day in the Kempton Park calendar, this Boxing Day raceday features three Group 1 races including the festival's flagship race, the William Hill King George VI Chase, won five times by Kauto Star.

Football: Barclays Premier League - Chelsea v West Ham

Palace, whilst faced with a mammoth task to survive in the Premier League, have only lost to the big guns by narrow margins and with the season entering a crucial phase, they are likely to cause some problems.

Chelsea will be overwhelming favourites to win this tie as they seek to maintain their steady march to Barclays Premier League glory again but they entertain a Hammers side who stunned many with an excellent first few months of the campaign.

A big Boxing Day tie between two sides who will be eager to finish off 2014 on a high note after enduring some troubled times during the year but arriving at the midpoint of the current season in confident shape.

No matter where these teams happen to be in the table this fixture has always been looked upon as a highlight. Spurs have not enjoyed much luck against United over recent seasons and will be underdogs here.

United’s away form was dreadful for the first half of the season but they have looked far more assured in recent matches as Louis van Gaal’s masterplan appears to be coming into its own after a stuttering start.

Bar Manager/Steward DENISE OAKLEY & PAUL WALTON Nunsfield House Social Club Judges’ comments: “Paul Walton and his partner Denise have been steward/ stewardess at the club for seven years. The dynamic duo was commended for their professionalism as well as their determination to carry on under difficult circumstances (Denise has cancer). They also project managed a major refurbishment programme and managed to keep the club open during the building work – no mean feat – and have won a long battle with neighbours over rights to use the club’s garden. ‘We’re now really looking forward to getting customers back through more use in garden with barbies and kids’ days,’ says Paul. The club installed two extra TV screens and maximised the benefits of this year’s World Cup fever. Paul’s advice on running a successful club? ‘You’ve got to live it, it’s a way of life. There’s no 9 to 5 – you’ve got to love it.’ ”

Paul and Denise proudly accept their award from Marston’s Mathew Lowe (far left).

KINGS HEATH CRICKET & SPORTS CLUB Judges’ comments: “Kings Heath is 146 years old with a healthy membership of some 700 people; this has grown by five per cent over the past year. Catering is a big draw for the club, which is in the throes of planning a kitchen refurbishment to the tune of £17k. The club provides everything from bar snacks to fine dining, and – with sport at its heart – feeding hungry players is also key. The club hosts sports tournaments including boules, squash, cricket, junior football and hockey. This equates to 300 players in the grounds every week to cater for.”

Golf Catering Club LYMM GOLF CLUB (Under £1m turnover) Judges’ comments: “Lymm Golf Club was founded in 1907. With around 600 members, the club prides itself on hearty food, such as pies, lasagnes and curries, plus hot and cold bar snacks, from soups to sandwiches. Weddings are also a good source of catering revenue. The way the food is presented and served was also considered by the judges, with special note to the high level of service.”

Lymm and Dudsbury Golf Clubs share the stage to scoop the Golf Catering Club of the Year Awards, 2014, presented by Villeroy & Boch's Nick Green (far left).

DUDSBURY GOLF CLUB (Over £1m turnover) Judges’ comments: “Dudsbury Golf Club's 650 members are undoubtedly lucky that their club puts such an emphasis on catering. The club’s restaurant (with Piano Bar) serves a full lunch and dinner menu as well as a Sunday Carvery. A ‘4-for-3’ offer – where one diner in a party of four eats for free – encourages members to bring along guests, while the Spike’s Bar, open seven days a week, offers a more informal eating experience. Private functions have increased, with nearly 40 weddings being catered for, and social events such as tribute acts also bring in extra food revenues. The club is Cask Marque accredited and serves the full Marston’s portfolio.”

They have been working hard on reducing their carbon footprint. They have also been working with the LTA and Sport England to develop a new community programme which sees the club’s in-house coaching team running taster sessions and coaching classes to children and adults around Leeds. Judges’ comments: “Huge and hugely impressive club which has an array of activities on offer and first-class social and sporting facilities. They’ve introduced a new online booking system and installed superfast broadband and the club is dedicated to offering new activities, such as setting up a Futsal (Brazilian version of indoor football) section this year which has been very popular. Following on from a £1.5 million investment in facilities in 2010, the club is set for another major building project to the tune of £750,000, all paid for by the club’s surplus income which is mainly drawn from conference/private function/wedding revenues. The addition of a chef in the past 18 months has helped to boost private function income and improve the catering options across the board.”

The joint winners take their prize from Club Insure’s Wendy Sharp, fifth from right.

JOINT WINNER

TIVERTON CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB

Judges’ comments: “Sharing the Most Innovative Club of the Year Award is Tiverton Constitutional Club which was founded in 1964. The club has really engaged with the local community with its 150th anniversary celebrated by holding an event with schoolchildren wearing Victorian costume. It has upped its social media activity, created trails for people to exercise on and sends out a programme to 5,000 businesses. Events promoted this year included a Brazilian festival to coincide with screening of the World Cup. A very impressive club with an enthusiastic manager and an example to others.”

The winners show off their Award, presented by David Barker of Carlsberg UK (third from left).

WINDLESHAM GOLF CLUB Judges’ comments: “Everything about the club and its offering is reflected in its website, which is both engaging and user friendly. Managing director Peter Lumley has overseen a £1m extension to the club to great success. The club shows a forward-thinking approach, has managed to raise funds and is reaping the rewards with functions and membership up 20 per cent. Staff are looked after with new training schemes put in place to help them do their job to their best ability. Peter also wants to change the image of golf club food so has introduced new menus with flair to suit the new restaurant facilities. He has objectives – he wants the club to be top of the first division – and he is clearly on his way! ”

Golf Club KP CLUB (Up to £500,000 turnover) Judges’ comments: “Established in 1994 as Kilnwick Percy GC, the 18-hole KP in East Yorkshire has two restaurants and a bar with which to entertain the 390-strong membership, plus – of course – top class golfing facilities. The venue has undergone a bit of a rebrand in the past few years with the addition of on-site accommodation and an ultra-modern glass-fronted clubhouse; and it’s reaping the benefits. Membership has grown by 40 per cent in the past 12 months but the club is also keen to get nonmembers involved through ‘stay and play’ packages and competitive green fees. KP prides itself on service to members and non-members and has been awarded ‘Excellence’ status on Trip Advisor due to the overwhelmingly positive feedback on there.”

The teams from KP and Vale Royal Abbey take to the stage to collect this joint Award.

VALE ROYAL ABBEY (Over £500,000 turnover) Judges’ comments: “Vale Royal Abbey is a high-end club which has been privately owned by two individuals for ten years. Five years ago it was costing them £250,000 a year to keep going but Ian Embury was brought in to boost income and has been very successful, ensuring the cost base is as low as possible without compromising on the quality of the golf course and facilities. Growth in the outside function market has been massive with the result that the club moved to a break-even point two years ago and is now making healthy profits. Importantly, this has been achieved without heavy discounting in the green fees market ensuring that the club membership is still highly prized and it remains a prestigious club.”

Tennis Club NORTHUMBERLAND CLUB Judges’ comments: “Dubbed ‘the biggest tennis/squash club in the North East’, the club has worked hard to boost junior membership with a series of open days, training camps and coaching courses which have all proved hugely popular. General manager Graeme Manwell has also set up a disability tennis section for visually impaired players and held a national tournament which attracted 40 players from all over the country. They also have a very active social calendar with quiz nights plus summer parties (even holding a pig racing night in August!). The club was founded in 1926 and boasts a 1,300-strong membership.”

Bowling Club PENN BOWLING & SOCIAL CLUB Judges’ comments: “This was judged to be a really good club which has bowls at its core but maintains a flourishing social side with the number of social members continuing to rise thanks to its Real Ale offering, a great atmosphere and regular entertainment including several charity events. A big beer festival is held annually and this year’s saw 3,000 people visiting over three days. The club secretary praised steward Faye White for the way that she has transformed the bar in the past three years and worked with Marston’s to get her staff trained up by the brewery.”

DARLINGTON MOWDEN PARK RFC

Judges’ comments: “Mowden RFC in Darlington was founded in 1950 and has steadily grown in stature. It’s an amazing success story, making them a true match for any club – and not just in terms of their transformation after taking the plunge by selling their old ground for housing and buying a 25,000-seater stadium and everything that comes with it. This, of course, has been coupled with extraordinary success on the field. The club offers no less than six bars which extends to 10 on match days as well as two large function rooms, games room and separate restaurant. Next year, the All-Blacks will be based here during the World Cup and are hoping to get 2,500 along to perform the world’s biggest haka and break into the Guinness Book of Records.”

The joint winners of Rugby Club of the Year proudly gather round the Aviva Premiership trophy (courtesy of sponsor BT Sport).

JOINT WINNER

NORTHERN FOOTBALL CLUB

Judges’ comments: “On the rugby side of the things, Northern Football Club’s men’s teams are doing very well and the junior section is flourishing throughout the various age groups (and makes up the biggest membership percentage of the entire club). They’ve installed new floodlights as well, which means they now have some of the best training facilities in the area. The gym and squash sections are also attracting new members and there is plenty going on socially throughout the club, including a newly formed golf society plus a number of bookings for weddings and parties stretching into 2015, not to mention their popular annual beer festival.”

He scored his first England try in the 2009 Six Nations (against Scotland at Twickenham), was selected for the 2009 Lions tour, helped Harlequins win the Amlin Challenge Cup and was named in the England training squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Shortly after this picture was taken, Ugo was whisked back to London for an early training session the following day.

From BT Sport’s Rugby Tonight studio in London, Ben Kay wished everyone a great evening. The rugby legend then read out the list of Rugby Club of the Year finalists before handing back to John Inverdale in Manchester for the live announcement of the winners.Ben and BT Sport also invited category finalists to take part in a live recording of Rugby Tonight.

Darts Club AIRDRIE WORKING MEN'S CLUB Judges’ comments: “A huge club which is continuing to add to membership numbers with a wide and varied range of activities, not least darts for which it is very well renowned, making it a worthy winner of this Award. PDA pro Gary Stone is attached to the club and Airdrie hosts the biggest oneday tournament in Europe each August, drawing in top players from all around. Entertainment is also a big draw here with live music every weekend from the house band who play cover versions of golden oldies and more modern hits, as well as solo singers. A big change this year was the conversion of one of the club’s five bars into a Hawaiian-style cocktail bar. ”

Entertainment Club JOINT WINNER

BBC CLUB

Judges’ comments: “Under the leadership of Dino Portelli, the BBC club has consistently shown great imagination in serving the interests and needs of its membership. In June this year, for example, a Disco Heaven theme party saw one of the Sister Sledge sisters take to the stage, with guests invited to join in, using dressing up boxes and face painters. A photo booth and goody bags were part of the event. Dino also introduced a Senses Cinema experience where movie-watchers open a box of ‘experiences’ at a given time for a sensory experience (e.g. Ouzo and pine needles for Mama Mia). Coffee Master Classes, sporting activities and learning languages are just some of the other items on the menu.”

The winners of Entertainment Club collect their award from Chris Haley of Dransfields (third from right).

JOINT WINNER

NORTH ORMESBY WORKING MEN’S CLUB

Judges’ comments: “Joint winners of the Award, this very successful club, which first opened its doors in 1924, is run by a passionate committee who are willing to invest in the facilities and help the club appeal to wide variety of people. As a result, membership continues to increase. They host live acts every Saturday and Sunday and the entertainments officer has booked acts for the next 12 months in order to get good value entertainment. In addition, there’s a very active sports section with darts and snooker – including professional players in their ranks. Their state-of-the-art upstairs function room is very popular for private parties and events. ”

Refurbishment Club WINDLESHAM GOLF CLUB Judges’ comments: “Managing Director Peter Lumley showed clear enthusiasm and passion about the club which impressed the judges. Completing and project managing a £1m extension is no mean feat, but this club has done it with excellent results. Functions and membership are up by 20 per cent due to the extension and staff are looked after with new training schemes to help them do their job to their best ability. Peter also wants to change the image of golf club food so has introduced new menus with flair to suit the new restaurant facilities. He wants the club to be top of the leader board and he is clearly on his way! ”

ROLLS ROYCE LEISURE - DERBY Judges’ comments: “The club has restructured its grounds team in the past year to make it even more efficient. It has also taken on a maintenance apprentice, sports and turf apprentice and a gardening apprentice who are working out well. In addition to maintaining the football and rugby pitches, the team looks after three bowls greens – Rolls Royce’s Bowls section has won the county championship and is attracting good players – and have added a further cricket square to the existing two. This is described as a major coup for the cricket section which continues to grow, headed up by a former Nottinghamshire player.”

The club boasts outside facilities in the form of cricket and rugby pitches, tennis courts and hard courts which are also used for five-a-side football. SOMERS SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB Judges’ comments: “This is a very proactive club which knows what to focus on to get the biggest return – refurbishment, a greater variety of beers and introducing new and better entertainment. For example, they’ve installed a French boules court, so members have something new to learn. Refreshing their ideas and introducing new activities (such as boules) keeps members interested and on the increase. In the area, they are recognised for their extensive array of beers and have established a great reputation locally – even the local MP has joined the club, which is a great accolade!”

Membership Club JOINT WINNER

GAUDET LUCE GOLF CLUB

Judges’ comments: “Congratulations to Gaudet Luce for gaining over 100 new members through its membership drive. With a very hands-on operations manager, the club’s creative ways to boost membership impressed the judges. One such example is teaching golf at primary schools; while this encourages kids to play it has the knock-on effect of interesting parents in the game, and/or attracting back lapsed golfers. The club has also introduced a flexible membership system (£95 a year) and has refurbished the clubhouse bar and restaurant with a new menu with the aim of growing this area of club business.”

Springhead Liberal CLub (above) is delighted with their win, and (inset; above right) John Dolan from Booker (pictured far right) presents Gaudet Luce Golf Club with their Award.

JOINT WINNER

SPRINGHEAD LIBERAL CLUB

Judges’ comments: “Springhead Liberal Club, founded in 1897, goes from strength to strength. It is a prime example of what winning an Award can do for business (it won Entertainment Club of the Year in last year’s Awards). The club now has artistes approaching them for gigs because they know they will get a good audience. The club plans ahead; for example, knowing the World Cup would be held in 2014, it invested £3,500 in its projector so it could show the game on its 50in screen. This has reaped dividends in terms of bringing new people into the club. Having a bowling green has also helped the club’s fortunes as it is the chosen venue for competitions, bringing new people into the club.”

Charity Club ST. KENT’S Judges’ comments: “Charity is part of the fabric at St Kentigern’s – AKA St Kent’s. The club has raised nearly £900,000 for charities over the past 12 years, averaging around £75,000 a year; a staggering sum. Funds are usually split between around 10 organisations including Cornerstone, which helps those down on their luck – such as ex-prisoners trying to rebuild their lives. Two priests who are helping deprived children in Sao Paulo are also supported by the club, and large charity events form an integral part of the club’s entertainment programme. This Autumn, for example, it hosted a large charity golf weekend to coincide with the Ryder Cup; 17 teams took part. The club also supports a Gaelic Football team and three soccer teams.”

Traditional Club MAINLINE SOCIAL CLUB Judges’ comments: “This club encapsulates everything that a traditional club should represent. It is determined to grow this culture and expand its reach, and has increased turnover and membership by actively finding out what people want from the club. New initiatives include the highly successful singles night on Monday which is now getting upwards of 60 people a week on what was the club’s quietest day. There is something going on at the club seven days a week and local councillors hold their constituency surgery there on Saturday mornings. Always pro-actively seeking new members, the club has targeted bus drivers, thanks to the bus station at the front of the club (with a knock-on of recruiting passengers as well).”

John Pyatt – who recently received a long-service Award from the CIU – continues to pull out the stops for the club. Jackpot Bingo is now offered two evenings a week, a major success and bringing people and profit through the doors. A seniors club has also been launched on Tuesday night which has helped to bring back older members who are now engaging with the club more often. John and the club continue to hold true to their caring mantra, sending over 50 club members on a free holiday to Blackpool in August.”

Both remain driving forces in their respective clubs. Congratulations to them both!”

MAKE SURE YOU’RE PROPERLY COVERED Andy Kitchener Aon Relationship Manager for CIU One of my main concerns is that many social clubs do not have the necessary type of cover in place to ensure that in the event of any unforeseen circumstances their business is adequately protected.

Did you know: • Employers Liability Insurance, which covers you if an employee is injured or hurt during their day-to-day role, is a legal requirement and forms part of UK legislation. • Committees always assume the responsibility for the safety of their members and guests which leads to a requirement for Public Liability Insurance. • Secretaries and Committee members could ultimately be held personally accountable for a lack of adequate insurance cover leading to personal financial and even criminal action.

What are the risks of not having any cover? The consequences of not having any Employers’ Liability cover are that you are breaking the law and could be subject to a fine A lack of Public Liability Insurance could open your club up to very expensive claims in the event of negligence within your premises. On top of all this any expenses occurred, that would have been covered by an insurance policy, will subsequently have to be settled from your own funds.

What is underinsurance and what are the risks? Underinsurance is where you take out a policy but for a value less than the item or risk that you are wishing to cover. If you are underinsured by say 50%, the insurer will only settle at 50% of the sum specified or could ultimately decide that the claim is repudiated and no settlement is made. BENEFITING FROM NEW-AGE TECHNOLOGY

fter just 18 months running the United Services, Services Rendered Club (USSR for short) in London’s Balham High Road, Club Manager Brenda Tomkins and the Committee have managed to

make substantial savings by listening to HEINEKEN and installing the company’s well-publicised new technology - SmartDispense - and it’s benefiting the bar staff too. “Like many clubs, we were going through a rough patch financially and needed to cut costs,” says Brenda. “The cellar wasn’t functioning properly, our ullage was often costing a four-figure sum at the stocktaking stage and the staff were ‘overheating’ behind the bar because of the temperatures at which the coolers were running! “On voicing our concerns, our HEINEKEN rep Kirsty Millner and one of their Draught Dispense

It also became apparent that the cellar temperature control unit was not working and the club did not wish to invest in replacing or repairing this system. “Due to the layout of the club and the fact the kegs and cooler could be located directly under the bar providing a short python run, we were able to install one of our Smart Dispense systems without the necessity of cellar cooling. “HEINEKEN paid to install the new system and this has clearly
