The new, bigger venue, Doncaster Racecourse, proved all that we could hope it to be – a huge success. But of course however good the venue, the Awards couldn’t be a success without the readers, finalists, winners and sponsors who took time out to enjoy the night of celebration. The clubs gathered together under that one roof on that one night represented the best of the best, proving that clubs continue to provide a fun and welcoming environment for their members and communities. Entertainment remains a key factor in bringing in new and existing members alike – from comedians and bands to quizzes and racedays. And where would any of us be without sport, whether playing it or watching it or both? Our entrants proved, if proof were needed, that big screens rammed with crowdpulling action are an exciting mainstay of club life. With this in mind, be sure to make the most of sister title Sports4Bars.com’s listings – see pages 20-21 in this issue for some fantastic February fixtures. We’ll be bringing you all the best of the action during 2018. Also in 2018, watch out for Club Mirror events taking place as we usher in our 50th birthday, starting with our first golf day of the season and our Rugby Tonight Takeover (pages 17-19). With your help, we intend to make this a very special year. And if you’re marking any anniversaries in 2018, whether that’s a longest serving member or the millionth pint pulled, just let us know. It doesn’t matter what the years or numbers are, let’s make this a year of celebration. Just email caroline@clubmirror.com with your dates and a topline summary. On the topic of celebration, if you haven’t entered the Club Awards before then make this the year that you do. What have you got to lose? And more importantly what have you got to gain? All of you play a crucial part in your communities across the UK and you deserve recognition for that. Entry couldn’t be easier so turn straight to page 12 while it’s still front of mind. Finally, congratulations to each and every club reading this for always being there for your members and your communities.

Alchohol labelling could follow cigarette lead Explicit cigarette-style warnings illustrating the link between drinking and health conditions should appear on UK alcohol labels according to recommendations by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). This follows research amongst nearly 1,800 UK adults and aims to tackle what the RSPH describes as an ‘alcohol health awareness vacuum’. Less than one in six people (16%) are aware of the Government’s low-risk alcohol guidelines and only one in 10 are aware of the link between alcohol and cancer, according to the independent charity. The RSPH’s report, Labelling the Point,

recommends a best practice labelling scheme which includes: • Low-risk drinking guidelines Mandatory inclusion of the Government’s low-risk drinking guidelines of no more than 14 units a week, potentially including an explicit cigarette-style warning of the link with health conditions such as bowel and breast cancer. It is also suggested that traffic light colour coding could help drinkers make use of unit information in the context of the guidelines. • Drink drive warning on the front

label RSPH’s research indicated explicit warnings such as these are especially prioritised by young drinkers and more deprived socio-economic groups. •Calorie content RSPH research indicates that calorie content per container or per serve on the front label could result in an almost 10% swing in consumer purchasing decisions from the highest alcohol drinks to the lowest, within all main drink categories (beers, wines, spirits) and across all socioeconomic groups. According to the report, the effect is particularly pronounced

Campaign to adopt Agent of Change John Spellar MP read a Ten Minute Rule Bill in Parliament on 10 January aimed at protecting grassroots music venues from closure as a result of new accommodation being built nearby and residents complaining about the noise. “This Bill is designed to protect existing music venues from closure or crippling cost arising from the development of new residential properties in their vicinity, especially over questions of noise,” said Mr Spellar. Support from some of the UK’s music greats included Sir Paul McCartney who said: “Without the grassroots clubs, pubs and music venues my career could have been very different. If we don’t support music at this level, then the future of music in general is in danger.”

The Agent of Change principle is that the person or business responsible for the change is responsible for managing the impact of the change. If, for example, an apartment block is built near an established live music venue the residents/builders would have to pay for the soundproofing. Conversely, a live music club venue opening in a residential area would be responsible for these costs. Beverley Whitrick, Strategic Director for Music Venues Trust (MVT) said: “At the moment, UK law says that whoever is making a nuisance is always responsible for that nuisance. If a noise exists, you can deliberately move next to it and demand it be turned off and UK law will support you. You can build balsa wood huts next door to a music venue and simply wait for your

residents to complain and the venue will have to pay all the costs to reduce their noise. This is unfair and unreasonable. John Spellar’s Bill will stop it, and that’s why we are reaching out across the music industry, cultural sector and politics to ask parliament to act and make Agent of Change the law.” Supporting the bill Rhoda Dakar of the band the Bodysnatchers/Specials said: “Grassroots music venues and clubs are the lifeblood of an industry in which we, as a nation, punch far above our weight. Our cultural capital is a precious commodity that, once frittered away, could not be replicated. Moving into an area because of what it offers, then colluding in its destruction, is an exercise in absurdity. Agent of Change would draw a line under this. It is vital this becomes law!”

among young (18-24) drinkers, who could switch purchases from high to low alcohol drinks by as much as 20%. Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, Chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance (AHA), said: “We all have a right to know the drinking guidelines, along with the risks associated with alcohol, so that we are empowered to make informed choices about our drinking. With alcohol producers unwilling to communicate this information, the government should now introduce mandatory labelling of all alcohol products, with labels clearly communicating the guidelines and health risks.”

CAMRA courts beer and cider drinkers CAMRA is set to widen its remit following the 46-year-old consumer organisation’s review of its purpose and objectives in 2016. CAMRA’s 190,000 members were invited to participate in the Revitalisation Project and now, at April’s Annual General Meeting in Coventry, members will be asked to consider changes to the organisation’s Articles of Association which aim to broaden the types of beer that it represents. Changes include CAMRA’s plans to represent drinkers of quality beers, ciders and perries of all types and in all outlets, including ‘quality beer’ which does not meet the organisation’s definition of ‘real ale’. The organisation also plans to encourage ontrade outlets of all kinds to serve quality beer, cider and perry and to continue advocating drinking in public social venues, rather than buying drinks from the off-trade for home consumption. The proposed changes may take the form of: • CAMRA festivals offering a wider range of quality beers, ciders and perries in all formats. • CAMRA engaging with drinkers of all types with the hope of taking them on a ‘journey of discovery’ of why real ale, cider and perry is particularly special. • CAMRA supporting members in their appreciation of beer, their ability to both recognise quality products and campaign effectively for them to be stocked in bars. • CAMRA providing information about all kinds of beer - not just real ale - as well as

UK clubs celebrate success at Club Mirror’s 26th Club Awards Clubs across Britain have been recognised at the Club Awards for the pivotal role they play in the UK. The Awards were held on 30 November, 2017 at Doncaster Racecourse, hosted by sports and TV personality John Inverdale. Clubs were applauded for their many attributes across 28 categories, from championing grass roots sports activities and building entertainment programmes, to growing their membership and improving opportunities for members to learn more about brewing and the different types and styles available to drinkers • CAMRA recognising a wider range of drinks and establishments in its local and national competitions CAMRA chairman Colin Valentine said: “It’s always been important that our members have had a say throughout this review process and we’re now at the point where we’ll be giving all our members the chance to vote on the final Revitalisation Project recommendations. “The vote will be held at our Annual General Meeting, in Coventry in April. In the months between now and then we’ll be making sure members can access the full details of the changes we’re recommending, along with the analysis of the impacts and potential opportunities the changes will have. “My colleagues and I will be making ourselves available at meetings around the country over the next three months so that members can ask us questions about the proposed changes. We’ll also be making sure that we’re available online at frequent intervals. At the end of this process our aim is to make sure that every member has been given the opportunity to learn more about the proposals before they voted. “Our recommendations mark an important stage in CAMRA’s long history. We recognise that the beer and pub landscape has changed and continues to evolve, and our place in that landscape has changed as well. We’re determined to make sure that we continue to change and evolve so that we are relevant to drinkers of all types and continue to offer a compelling reason for people to join our organisation.”

Clubs were also congratulated for raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity across the year. “It was an amazing celebration of success and a true reflection of the important part clubs across the land play in our society,” said Club Mirror Editor and Head Judge Caroline Scoular. “Thanks to every winner, every finalist

and every club who entered. And thanks to all of the Club Awards sponsors who recognise the value of our unique sector. It really was a spectacular event and we can't wait for the 2018 celebrations!” •The 2018 Awards are open for entries. Turn to pages 12-13.

The CAMRA Club of the Year Super Round winners have been announced following rigorous judging by the CAMRA judging team. Club Mirror’s Sean Ferris, a CAMRA judge, said: ”Out of 16 regional winners, only four

NEWS IN BRIEF New Chairman for CAMRA Colin Valentine is standing down as CAMRA National Chairman after eight years in the role. He hands over to Vice Chairman Jackie Parker at Coventry’s AGM in April. Parker, who has been an active member of the Campaign for Real Ale for 18 years and a member of the National Executive for seven, said: “I’m excited about the opportunity for my fellow directors and I to lead CAMRA into the future and ensure that the next important step of the Revitalisation Project – implementation of the recommendations into the Campaign’s future positioning and purpose, strategy and activities goes smoothly. My vision for CAMRA is to ensure we remain as relevant to our active volunteers, our members, possible new members and those people visiting pubs and clubs as possible, and we continue to achieve our goals of campaigning for real ale, cider and perry drinkers across the UK.” BHA and ALMR to merge The British Hospitality Association (BHA) and Association of Licenced Multiple Retailers (ALMR) are merging to create a new body, UKHospitality. The new body aims to represent the UK’s third largest private sector employer, which combined directly generates £130bn of revenue each year. The sector is forecast to grow by 4.3% annually, generating 19,000 additional jobs by 2020. UKHospitality’s objective will be ‘to deliver much-needed policies to help the sector secure that opportunity, and would drive employment and innovation, and support entrepreneurs’. Kate Nicholls, proposed CEO-elect said: “This sector is a vital, dynamic economic powerhouse whose importance is clear in our communities, our high streets and our everyday lives. It is one of our fastest growing, most productive industries and last year it delivered one in 8 of all new jobs.”

CAMRA CLUB OF THE YEAR

Clubs recognised for real ale offering The CAMRA Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror. Four Super Round contenders were announced at the magazine’s 2017 Club Awards, all of whom were then visited and judged by a team from CAMRA and from Club Mirror. And the Super Round winners are...

T

he CAMRA Club of the Year aims to locate and identify clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale, offering a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition. Participating clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and by direct entry into the Club Awards. They are then judged by a panel of volunteers throughout the year. The best four clubs in the country were announced at the Club Awards in Doncaster on November 30 last year, chosen from 16 hot contenders. The four Super Round winners and finalist included two Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) clubs – the Albatross Club in Bexhill-on-Sea and the Real Ale Farm in Bargoed, Wales. The Albatross was a finalist last year and took home the national title in 2016. It boasts an interesting collection of RAF memorabilia and regularly holds beer festivals and social events. The Real Ale Farm is housed in the oldest surviving building in Bargoed, dating back to the 17th century. It offers the best range of quality beers for miles around, selected for flavour and interest and sourced from breweries both near and far. It hosts numerous charity events throughout the year. Like its Albatross counterpart, RAF memorabilia can be found in the bar at the club which maintains a keen eye to the future as well as celebrating its past. Also in the running was the Appleton Thorn Village Hall in Warrington, a former school that has previously taken home the Club of the Year title for its agricultural-themed interior and local beer range. The club has recently introduced a new gin bar, which is also proving to be very popular with members. Finally, the Flixton Conservative Club in Manchester was a hot contender after a recent transformation has seen an even wider range of real ales and ciders brought in. The club runs monthly brewery nights and a number of sports team and quiz events. Keith Spencer, Club of the Year Co-ordinator, said: “All four clubs demonstrate a first-class commitment to real ale and a dedication to the respective

communities they each serve, making them all absolutely vital to their local areas.” Sean Ferris, Publisher and Managing Director of Club Mirror, said: “Now, more than ever, clubs are proving to be at the heart of the community and we’re proud to have been working with them to secure this position for the past 50 years. As always it's been a great pleasure to work with CAMRA on this unique Award and congratulations to all contenders." The ultimate winner will be announced on March 1. Watch this space! Albatross Club in Bexhill-on-Sea yet again proved an impressive contender.

RUGBY TONIGHT TAKEOVER

And... action! Club Mirror and Club Rugby readers descended on BT Sport’s London studio for 2018’s first Rugby Tonight Takeover. Couldn’t join us? Then here’s how it played out.

O

n January 17, BT Sport’s popular weekly rugby show Rugby Tonight played host to readers of Club Mirror and sister magazine Club Rugby along with Club Award’s finalists and rugby-mad suppliers. Following security check-ins, guests were led into the heart of the building and the corridors of sporting power, pictures providing the map to the studio (left at Craig Doyle, right at Robbie Savage and right at Claire Balding, for anyone who’s interested). “With presenters and rugby legends Martin Bayfield, Ben Kay and Brian O’Driscoll pounding the same corridors it was a unique opportunity to bump into some of rugby’s all-time greats,” said Club Mirror’s Caroline Scoular. “Which we did. On several occasions. Unintentionally of course!” A drinks reception and burger and chips courtesy of BT Sport and Club Rugby saw the audience gather together with photo opportunities and videos taken with club representatives which appeared later in the live programme. After a briefing by the floor manager the programme kicked off with a club name check from Martin Bayfield and a Q&A with Welsh Legend Martyn Williams, providing insights into the upcoming Six Nations. Rugby chats in the on-set ‘Ruck & Maul’ pub followed along with re-enactments by

demo teams (including Vigo, who – slight aside – Club Mirror publisher Sean Ferris played for once upon a rugby time). A key focus was the hosts’ predictions of what would happen in the final pool games of the Champions Cup that weekend – a spectacular weekend for sports-screening clubs. They hit the mark as we later saw, with the quarter final line up emerging as Claremont Auvergne v Racing 92, Leinster v Saracens, Munster V Toulon and Scarlets v La Rochelle. At the end of the filming – which saw James Bond double Brian O'Driscoll leaping on the back of a waiting motorbike to catch a flight – a group shot ensued, followed by a trip down to close-by bar Shane’s On Canalside to round off the event. Here’s to the next one later in the season!

They may have lost the Ashes Test series in pretty abject fashion but England are no slouches when it comes to the Twenty20 version of the game and will undoubtedly be competitive in this Tri-Series which will see them in action against both the Black Caps of New Zealand and Australia.

This is Spurs’ first time in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League since the 2010/11 season and they will be eager to have a good run to the latter stages of the tournament with back-to-back wins against the famous Italian club.

UEFA Champions League: Last 16, 1st Leg - FC Basel v Manchester City

UEFA Champions League: Last 16, 1st Leg - FC Porto v Liverpool

City fans couldn’t have wished for a more comfortable draw for the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and will expect their team to progress against a fairly average Swiss side who finished up as runners-up to Manchester United in Group A ahead of CSKA Moscow and Benfica.

On paper this is a kind draw for Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp will be wary of allowing any complacency to creep into his side’s preparations for this two-leg battle against the FC Porto. The Portuguese side qualified with the fewest points of any of the six clubs Liverpool could have faced and conceded a total of 10 goals during the group stages.

The Blues find themselves with a nightmare draw as they take on one of the aristocrats of Champions League football in Barcelona. Their task will be made all the more arduous given that the second leg will take place at the Nou Camp. On the plus side for the reigning Premier League Champions, Barca superstar Lionel Messi has never scored against Chelsea in his career. Sunday February 25 2.05pm Sky Sports PL HD

Premier League: Manchester United v Chelsea United manager Jose Mourinho will welcome his old team to Old Trafford and will be out to gain revenge for the 1-0 defeat meted out to his side at Stamford Bridge earlier this season. The Blues have given up on their title defence but would love a win here.

HQ BUILDING THE BUSINESS

HQ BUILDING THE BUSINESS

New Year New You? Keep it real is the advice – and be gentle on yourself. Also: with Facebook and social media now key communication mechanisms for clubs, just what are the constraints surrounding sharing pictures of your team and members? HQ looks at what the law has to say. Meanwhile, attracting the social media-adept millenials is ever more important. So just what pushes their buttons? A new Consumer Insights Report may offer some clues.

New year, new you? While many of us will have launched into 2018 with ambitious New Year’s resolutions they’re almost guaranteed to fail, according to the experts.

N

early all of us make the same mistake when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, one that practically guarantees we’ll fail miserably. Sadly, it’s not just New Year’s resolutions that we blow. Anytime we try to change our behaviour, we make the same disastrous mistake. In the time it takes you to read this, you’ll learn a strategy that you can use to reach any goal or to change any habit. Even the biggest goals, like stopping smoking and getting out of debt, are achievable with this approach. So, what’s this huge mistake we make when we set goals or try to change a bad habit? We expect to succeed. We have no contingency plan when we fall by the wayside. When we inevitably come up short – the stats are bleak when it comes to sticking with New Year’s resolutions – we have nothing to do but revert to our old behaviour. Your biggest goals require the biggest changes, the greatest commitments, the most effort and willpower. Those pounds aren’t going to lose themselves; your debt isn’t going away on its own; and the business you want to run isn’t going to start itself. These are massive undertakings that require a great deal of personal fortitude. The effort required to succeed can seem overwhelming, so much so that you might relent. You ditch your diet and eat the brownie. You forgo your budget and buy the shoes. You talk yourself out of business ownership and turn on the TV. The good news is that one misstep doesn’t have to derail you if you use the One Day, One Week, One Month Strategy. Here’s what you do:

One Week If you survive the first day –and you will – all you need to do is focus on surviving six more days. That’s it. You can do anything for a week, and you’ve already made it through the first day.

One Day It doesn’t matter that the book you want to write will take you two years and lots of late nights to complete. It doesn’t matter that the 50 pounds you need

One Month Congratulations! You made it a week. The desire to revert back to old behaviours is strong, but you’ve already gone a whole week. What’s another couple

26 CLUB MIRROR

to lose will take 12 months of sweat and sacrifice to drop. The hard work? The long hours? None of it matters. The only thing you should focus on is one day. That’s it. Surely you can stick to a diet for one day, right? Of course you can follow your budget for one day. It’s just one day. Get over your excuses. Get over the anxiety. You can do anything for a day.

of weeks to make it a month? If at the end of the month you decide it’s not worth it, tell yourself you’ll stop, but give yourself a month. What happens if you falter? As the old saying goes, if you fall down one step, don’t throw yourself down the whole staircase. If on day four you completely blow it, you simply start over. The next morning, you only focus on getting through one day. Then you take another shot at getting through a week, and you will because it will be much easier the second time. If on week three you crack. No problem. The next morning you simply focus on getting through one day. Then one week. Then take another run at one month. You can do this over and over and over again until you succeed. And when it comes to New Year’s resolutions? Well you just may need to try a few times before you succeed!

Picture imperfect With images flying around social media every second of the day, just what are the constraints on sharing pictures? Sarah Garner, solicitor at DAS Law provides the answers. If photos and/or videos are taken without my knowledge or consent, who owns the images? The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 provides that the author of a photograph is the person who creates it. The person who takes the photograph/video will own the copyright unless the photo/video was created by a person in the course of their employment. In this case the copyright will be owned by the employer. Can I have photos removed from social media or stop them being shared? In UK law there is generally no right to privacy where an image/video is taken in a public place. In a case involving Naomi Campbell, the court determined that the publication of photographs taken in

public would only be prevented if they were obviously private, or were offensive in some other way. This would include a person being caused humiliation or severe embarrassment. Most social media companies have policies in place that although the creator of the photo/video is the owner, once they are uploaded you are granting a licence to that social media company to use or allow others to use that photo/video. Due to the lack of privacy laws the courts are generally relying upon decisions in previous cases for their findings. Publication of photographs can be prevented if they were commissioned to be taken but were then used for an unauthorised purpose. The author of the photo/video would need to delete the photo/video from their social media account for it to be removed. However, if the

photo/video has been shared by another user it is unlikely that it can be removed. Can I insist they are permanently deleted and how do I go about this? Being able to get photos/videos removed from social media is highly unlikely especially if the photo/video has already been viewed/shared. The legal recourses available to prevent or remove photos/videos are a court injunction, a court order for return or destruction, or damages by way of financial compensation. Most social media companies will block or remove photos/videos that breach their policies regarding containing offensive material or images but this would be at the discretion of the particular social media company. You can however report any image or video for them to consider if it breaches their policies.

Consumer Insights Report The third edition of Carlsberg UK’s Consumer Insights Report published in December, examines the evolving landscape of hospitality and analyses the ‘millennial’ demographic.

A

n important consumer group for operators, 18-35 year olds are commonly referred to as millennials. The term describes over 14m people, however, so the report delves deeper into this classification and reveals the importance of recognising the factions within this broad definition. Whilst the millennials as a mass identity have behaviours and attitudes in common, the report takes a segmented approach and identifies fundamental differences in consumption habits between 18-25 and 26-35 year olds, examining what this means for the out-of-home market. Experiences have become increasingly important and equally so, sharing them on social media. Creating ‘shareable’ moments remains vital for operators in an ever-competitive market, says the report. The report’s analysis of social media trends has flagged the increased appetite for experiences throughout the week and on atypical days, such as ‘SundayFunday’ business growing by 55% over the last three years. Created to inspire bar operators across the country, the report also explores a number of key themes, including premiumisation, the demand for quality experiences, health and moderation and technology.

Premiumisation The report concludes that the treat economy megatrend of recent years shows no signs of abating and as a result while visits may be fewer (this is specifically related to pubs) when consumers are on the premises, they are looking for premium choices, experiences and serves, with the average spend per head up 3%. Experiences The consumer search for experiences continues to drive the leisure and hospitality market and the report’s findings support this with half of participants stating they feel a need to find new experiences to enjoy during their leisure time. Health and moderation The report has found that 50% of the population moderate alcohol in order to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Many other leisure sub-sectors are winning consumers over, with 26-35 year olds now more likely to visit the gym than the pub. Technology Technology continues to affect consumer habits with factors such as a strong online presence, online booking facilities and free WiFi scoring highest amongst participants.

Alongside these themes, this year’s report has been developed to showcase the biggest opportunities for the on-trade. Presenting the importance of getting the traditional social occasion right, the report also reveals several ‘wants’ from different demographics including cocktail masterclasses, opening early for breakfast, community meetings and coffee mornings. The importance of beer and food matching (particularly in food-led pubs) has been championed by consumers, who have revealed that they’re looking for a more comprehensive offering when eating out. The research indicates that, half of consumers would be interested in recommendations for the perfect brew to pair with their food choice. This rises to 67% amongst 26-35 year olds, who are the most engaged with pairing. Alistair Gaunt, VP Nationals Sales at Carlsberg UK, said: “This report provides meaningful insights into consumer habits, the rise of consumer expectations and the evolving way we need to approach our definitions of consumer groups. For instance, the findings from the report have shown that by using one simple descriptor of ‘millennial’ for such a wide, and profitable, collective of people operators can really be missing a trick.” • www.carlsbergwedelivermore.co.uk

It has also proved valuable in promoting events bringing in 120 people to a Jason Isaacs Night. “We then posted pictures of the event afterwards on Facebook and our click rate went up 8,000 percent!” says David. The club also has an online booking system and is booked up for functions 18 months in advance.

Manor Golf Club Twelve months ago Manor Golf Club was in a precarious position, losing members and struggling to find a clear vision for the future. Bringing in a new course manager and updating the facilities in the clubhouse saw the club turn a corner. The course became more user friendly (for example losing some of the rough, making the game quicker and slicker) while in the clubhouse new drinks were introduced to appeal to the younger generation. The club now runs monthly events – from wine and gourmet evenings to an Oktoberfest – and has introduced a discount cash card which members use to buy food and drinks, which is proving very popular.
