This milestone is a testament to the collective dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to excellence in education of all colleagues.
This year’s conference is centred around the themes of Optimism, Ambition and Oneness. These values sit behind and drive the foundation of our success and will continue to guide us as we strive to provide the best educational experiences for our students.

Adrian Packer CBE
Adrian was appointed Executive Principal of Park View Educational Trust, now CORE Education Trust, in 2014 He became the CEO in 2016 and the Group CEO in 2022 .
Prior to this, from 2012, Adrian was the founding Principal of Everton Alternative Provision Free School and 6th Form College
From 2010, Adrian was part of the founding team of Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), an arts academy set up in partnership with The BRIT School where Adrian was the Director of Musical Theatre from 1999 .
In 2018, Adrian created Echo Eternal, a commemorative arts project, which brings together groups of schools across the country using Holocaust survivor testimony to inspire community collaboration and empathy In 2019, he was awarded a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister for this work . The project won a Pearson’s Gold national teaching award in 2020
Adrian set up the CORE & Co Foundation in 2020, a charitable organisation which supports children, young people and families through collaborative partnership initiatives
Adrian is an independent Councillor for the LTA and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Birmingham .

Jo Tyler
Jo is a co-founder of CORE Education Trust In 2022, she was appointed as the CEO, having previously served as the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO . Prior to this, Jo had worked as a senior leader at school and trust level, gaining considerable experience working as a Director of Business and Finance in many varied and challenging circumstances Before working in the education sector, Jo had a successful career as a contract manager within the private sector
Jo mentors and coaches other leaders and works with national organisations to inform best practice . Her areas of expertise range from governance to people development; change management to complex project delivery She has a particular interest in curriculum design and resource management
Jo completed her MBA in Education Management in 2023 . She writes articles for education publications and regularly contributes to government policy making
Jo is a proud Queen’s Guide Award recipient She is passionate about outdoor learning and spearheaded CORE’s introduction of cadet forces across our schools theatre, music, and crocheting!
Jo’s contributions to the education of children in the West Midlands was acknowledged in 2022 when she was awarded the honour of baton bearer for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games

Wayne Harris is a nationally and internationally renowned attendance leader and speaker . With over a decade of experience in improving rates in both Primary and Secondary school settings .
Since September 2023, Wayne has led a ground-breaking Professional Development programme aimed at empowering schools to foster a culture of everyone being responsible for school attendance
Clive Lawrence OBE
Clive currently leads the development of educational opportunities at an inclusive multi-academy trust in the East and West Midlands, a MAT consisting of a group of pupil referral units (PRUs), alternative provision’s (APs), special schools, and primary schools Esteem’s vision is to be a ‘learning community of excellence for SEND and alternative provision’, Clive shares this ambitionto support children who are Looked After (LAC) He acknowledges his motivation is related to his own experiences with taking care of his family and he has been the guardian to his niece, with legal parental responsibility, since her birth
His wealth of experience in various educational roles, from teaching to leading, as well as through his qualifications specialising in SEND and leadership, makes him an invaluable addition to our Trustee board and PACT community . Clive led St Giles special needs primary school into an internally recognised ‘world-class’ institution It achieved ‘Outstanding’ from Ofsted in 2016, SEN School of the Year at Pearson’s Shine a light Awards in 2019, and subsequently achieved ‘world-class school’ status
Professor Colin Diamond CBE
Colin Diamond has worked in education leadership roles for 40 years He started his career in inner-London secondary schools as a humanities teacher and soon began to specialise working with students with additional needs .
He became a local authority adviser for SEND and an associate headteacher in Hackney and Tower Hamlets He became Director of Education in North Somerset when it was in intervention from the then DfEE and led its improvement journey until it gained several “outstanding” judgements from OfSTED including leadership .
In 2014, he was asked by DfE to lead the team that went to Birmingham in the wake of the Trojan Horse crisis
In September 2018 Colin Diamond took up the new post of Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Birmingham are to create greater engagement between schools and the university and establish an Education Leadership Academy is driven by the power of education to transform the lives of working-class children and wants them all to have the same opportunities that he was lucky enough to get through going to brilliant schools in Liverpool
He is a passionate fourth generation Liverpool FC supporter to play keyboards in covers bands until Birmingham took over his life Delivering

Dr Anita Devi
Dr Anita Devi is a prolific voice and leader in the field of special educational needs, disability, and inclusion (SENDi) She is a published author, speaker, and researcher Anita has a PhD in Education and Social Justice on the SENCO Career Trajectory (www .sencoleader .pro), a Masters degree in Inclusive Education and a degree in Psychology, amongst other practitioner / teaching qualifications Anita is dedicated to making real improvements for those with SEND and has many years of experience supporting school leaders, local authorities, and wider practitioners, as well as parents Her why is rooted in ‘the joy of learning’ and therefore she is passionate about enabling those who are inhibited to learn . Anita wrote the first SEND Guidebook for those new to teaching amongst other trailblazing research and publications like Journeying to the Heart of SENCO Wellbeing (www inclusionville me) and out in early 2025 Neuroplasticity and Neurodiversity in the Classroom plus 7 Dimensions of Highly Effective SENCOs . Sam Gibbs
Sam Gibbs is Trust Lead for Curriculum and Development at Greater Manchester Education Trust She is an experienced English teacher, school leader and teacher educator who has worked with schools across the country on curriculum design and implementation, pedagogy and professional development . Sam is a regular speaker and contributor to national education conferences and events, and co-chairs a national network for Trust CPD leads . She is coauthor of ‘The Trouble With English and How to Address It: A Practical Guide to Designing and Delivering a Concept-Led Curriculum’ (Routledge: 2022) and the forthcoming ‘Love The One You’re With: Why Teachers Stay and What We Can Learn from Them’ (John Catt)
Herman Stewart
Herman Stewart, also known as “The Mentor’s Mentor,” is an award-winning mentoring authority, author, and two-time Mentor of the Year winner He is the Founder of Every Child Needs a Mentor, a leading mentor training and recruitment service in Birmingham that provides accredited mentors for schools, parents, and local authorities Herman was the Lead Mentor for Birmingham’s local authority to improve school standards, achievement, and student outcomes With over 20 years of experience in mentoring, Herman’s Asset Based Mentoring (ABM) model was recognised as “high-quality” by Ofsted and included in a white paper for social inclusion . Herman is passionate about the flourishing of staff, students and parents . Before mentoring he was a recording artist featured on MTV, and he rapped on the same stages as Busta Rhymes and Wu-Tang ” Herman recently celebrated his twentieth wedding anniversary with his wife Donna, has three daughters, and loves cooking, visiting the health club and watching MasterChef

Phil Hughes
My name is Phil I am an Assistant Headteacher in a 4-19 special school where we build competence and confidence in young people who have a range of barriers to engagement My career started in residential care settings across the UK, providing crisis support for young people 11-16 new to the care system After serving time in mainstream education as a primary school teacher, I pursued a career in SEMH, working with some of most disadvantaged young people placed in Pupil Referral Units after finding little success in the mainstream setting . I’ve utilised Team Teach for many years, and I have seen the positive daily impact it can have on whole school culture, on staff and on pupils

Nicola Evitts
Nicola Evitts began her career as an English teacher in 2002 Since then, she has worked in two schools with different needs and contexts and has supported both leaders and teachers in schools in Solihull, Sandwell, Worcester, and Staffordshire
Nicola has undertaken a range of departmental and whole school roles during her career Within English departments, she has led on curriculum design, developing teaching, and improving student achievement At whole school level, she has designed and implemented a competency-based curriculum, cultivated cross-curricular opportunities and provided professional development to strengthen the provision of revision strategies
Most recently, as Lead Practitioner, Nicola has transformed the provision of literacy, led on professional development of ITTs and coached staff across departments for the quality of teaching and learning . In addition to developing others professionally, Nicola has completed the NPQLTD .
At CORE, Nicola is responsible for the strategic leadership of English and Literacy across all CORE Education Trust academies She evaluates Literacy provision across subjects and leads on professional development and coaching within English to support colleagues in our commitment to deliver excellence across the academies As Trust Professional Development Programmes Lead, Nicola oversees CORE staff’s engagement in the DfE’s ‘Golden Thread’ of teacher development programmes – ITT, ECT and NPQs – to ensure that CORE colleagues can engage in highquality professional development that supports their career progression

Jo Sargeant
With a background in large-scale retail management, Jo joined the Trust in June 2021 as Operations Manager for City Academy . Arriving at a time when the school was split over two sites, she went on to manage the renovation project at the Langley Walk site In September 2023, Jo took on the role of Head of Operations, overseeing all four schools within the Trust She leads on Trust-wide premises development, repairs and maintenance, compliance and health & safety, estates strategy, and school condition allowance funding . She supports and assists school Operations Managers across the Trust
Carly Moran
Carly Moran is the headteacher of Orchard Park High School in Croydon, a school renowned for its exceptional academic results and its strong, supportive ethos Specialising in teaching and learning and with a deep expertise in English, Carly has successfully turned her school into a vibrant, oversubscribed institution . Her leadership was recently recognised with an outstanding Ofsted inspection, cementing Orchard Park’s position as a beacon of excellence in the community

Simon Phelps is the headteacher of Five Acres High School, an oversubscribed and world-class institution in the Forest of Dean . A Religious Studies teacher by background, Simon has successfully led the school from special measures to a strong ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted His focus on community engagement and academic achievement has resulted in Five Acres achieving the highest GCSE results in both the Trust and the region, making it a leading light in secondary education
Nat Nabarro
Nat Nabarro is the headteacher of Blaise High School in Bristol, where he has successfully led the school’s turnaround from special measures to a strong ‘Good’ in three years With a background in pastoral care and behaviour, Nat has overseen the school’s highest ever GCSE outcomes . Known for his ability to create a positive and hardworking atmosphere in challenging environments, Nat is also a history teacher dedicated to academic excellence and student well-being

Max Tully
Max has worked for a decade in Birmingham schools, holding multiple middle leadership roles and including as part of a team that saw two improve to achieve outstanding Ofsted grades .
He joined CORE Education Trust in 2019, as a Senior Leader at Jewellery Quarter Academy It was here he consolidated his pastoral skills leading behaviour and attitudes, helping the school achieve a ‘Good’ Ofsted grade in May 2022 Shortly after, Max moved to City Academy to add capacity to leadership as Deputy Headteacher, where he diversified into line managing the following educational areas: behaviour and attitudes, quality of education, safeguarding and personal development During his time at City, Max contributed to rapid improvement within the school and significantly enhanced GCSE results
Max’s first passion remains pastoral care, and his philosophy can be summarised in the following strap line: ‘Would this be good enough for my child’!
He has been a notable speaker during seminars at the School’s and Academy Show and looks forward to using his expertise to support other schools in CORE’s family

Emily Preece
Emily Preece is the director of CORE Trust’s EAL provision, CORE Hello She began her career as primary teacher in 2012 and since then has taught at international schools in Saudi Arabia, Russia and Thailand . Emily is a passionate advocate for the rights of people seeking asylum, which is reflected in her prior work for Barnardo’s as a refugee family support worker; voluntary work as a befriender for Birmingham charity, Restore, and EAL Teacher for Shropshire charity, Shropshire Supports Refugees . In her role at CORE Hello, Emily aspires to lead a provision where our new arrivals are welcomed, nurtured and equipped with the confidence, knowledge and skills to navigate life in a new school, city and country
Seymour Douglas
Having started his career in the corporate sector with roles as an Accountant and then Systems Analyst, Seymour has worked in Data Manager or Systems Analyst roles in the education sector for the past 18 years He has worked directly in Secondary Schools but has also worked with Primary Schools’ Senior Leadership Teams as part of a Local Government Children’s Services Team to provide staff training, as well as develop and implement reporting and analysis processes

Leanne Parker Gomes has nearly 13 years of experience working in large secondary schools across London and the East Midlands as a Data Manager and member of the Senior Leadership Team . Following 3 years at one of the UK’s top 3 MIS companies, she now serves as Senior Customer Success Manager at Pupil Progress Leanne is passionate about supporting teachers in reducing their workload and maximising their impact to ensure the best outcomes for their students A former parent governor, Leanne is also the wife of a Head of Department for Modern Foreign Languages
Sabir Afzal
Sabir is an experienced senior leader who has worked at several schools in the West Midlands to drive improvements in the quality of education . He believes strongly that a child’s starting point in life doesn’t determine anything apart from describing the work ahead for school leaders and staff
Sabir has demonstrated impact in various whole school domains and has significant experience in the effective use of instructional leadership, change management and designing bespoke systems and processes that have a positive impact on both staff and students In addition to coaching and developing others, Sabir has completed the NPQH He is a passionate Science teacher with an expertise in Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching & Learning

Hywel Roberts
TEACHER – WRITER – STORYTELLER - HUMOURIST
Hywel has been a teacher for over thirty years His reputation has grown hugely since he stepped out of the full-time classroom He has found an incredible and innovative niche in the world of model teaching contributing to and advising curriculum designers and innovators from Barnsley to Brussels, from Cairo to Cleethorpes . Hywel is as at home in front of hundreds of Headteachers on the conference circuit as he is when working with EAL children on the carpets of their classrooms Hywel contributes to the national conversation around education at school and university level He is an experienced teacher in Special, Primary and Secondary settings, nationally and internationally . He is also a wellrespected author and contributes regularly to a variety of publications .
Hywel was invited to participate in The Oracy Commission in 2024, focusing on Drama pedagogy and storytelling He has also contributed fiction to a prison-based literacy reading programme developed by The Shannon Trust Hywel is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Charted College of Teaching
He also plays the double bass .

Title Leading Together – how to grow and develop leadership at all levels
Brief We will explore some of the basic ingredients of what makes an effective leader in school. They include understanding your own leadership style, where you are on your leadership journey and leading people and change. This will be an interactive session with lots of opportunities for questions. The materials will be drawn from our popular MA in Education Leadership and give you a sample of the learning activities.
The session will be suitable for leaders at all levels in school including those colleagues in their first promoted post through to senior leaders.

Title Continuous Professional Development – good for you, good for me, good for everyone; growing a culture
Brief Improving the quality of teaching is the most important challenge facing school leaders, but creating enabling cultures for the professional learning which drives improvement is a significant challenge. In this session, Sam will explore five principles for leading teacher development, considering how we might best structure and integrate professional development to optimise its impact on teacher learning and practice. Sam will share examples of work within her Trust, where she leads on CPD across four large secondary schools.

Title We are all Unique – as a practitioner how do I ensure ALL students, including SEND make progress?
Brief This session will address some of the current paradoxes in classrooms relating to increasing needs, limited resources and a professional curiosity for capacity building our inclusivity. Adopting an approach rooted in praxis, Anita Devi will share evidencebased models of coherence and a framework for hope. Many of the ideas presented will be based on simplification, not reductionism, thus ensuring ALL students (including SEND) continue to make progress. The session will provoke further inquiry leading to deepening pedagogical practice to meet the associated OKR. Those new to teaching and leading SEND, as well as the more experienced and support staff are welcome to engage in this 45-minute whistle stop tour to dream of a better inclusive way of learning and progressing in our classrooms.

Title Bringing vulnerability in from the cold –how investment in each child builds an inclusive ethos
Brief During Herman’s session, he will discuss how being vulnerable and bringing your authentic self into your practice can create transformational relationships that positively impact the children we influence throughout their lives. By sharing examples, stories, data, and case studies, Herman will provide evidence that effective mentoring practices can create trust-wide improvements in achieving SDP priorities and fostering positive personal development within schools.
Asset-based Mentoring also helps to create balance in the lives of students, staff, parents, and guardians. With over two decades of experience in transforming young lives, mentoring delivery, system management, and leadership, Herman’s insights will be valuable for all attendees.

Title Healthy Living – looking after yourself
Brief Through many years of extensive research, we know there are a series of ‘top rules’ for living a long and healthy life. In most cases eating a healthy diet, keeping an eye on our weight and waist, getting enough sleep and regularly participating in exercise can result in significant positive health changes. This session provides an overview of what these numbers are; what values they should be; and how you measure up to these health benchmarks.
The session focusses on realistic and practical lifestyle adaptations you can make to help you in developing a simple personal action plan to enhance your health and wellbeing. This session will cover:
• What are the key numbers, values and measurements we need to know about ourselves to improve our health?
• Where can we obtain them?
• What are the benefits of knowing them?
• What simple lifestyle changes can we make to improve our health and overall wellbeing?

Title Financial Advice – how to make your money work for you
Brief Getting into better habits with your money by being more aware of your financial behaviour and approach can be time well spent. Ensuring your budget works and covers your basics like bills and essentials can give you clarity and help you understand what you might be able to save or invest for your bigger goals.
In this session we’ll talk about the importance of time and the difference between saving and investing. You’ll consider how long you might be putting money away for and for what reason. We’ll discuss why inflation matters, is there such a thing as no risk and what on earth is diversification?!
Delivered by Broadstone Financial Solutions this session takes you on a journey from getting more organised with money to considering the key points in life and seeking some regulated financial advice.

Session 2 – 10:45-11:30
Title Positive Handling – supporting students through challenging interactions
Brief In this session, we won’t find any definitive answers to the mastery of behaviour management. We will begin a reflection on some of the adaptations we might consider when managing interactions with young people who are finding things difficult. We will appreciate what might affect our impact and how small differences in our approach can result in positive change over time in response to some of those typical behaviours that challenge us in our classrooms. We will consider some neuro- science theory, emotionally effective use of language and discuss one of the most debilitating conditions that affects a young person’s ability to consistently manage positive interaction.

Growing the roots of your career - how mentors inspire and grow the future of our profession
Brief The best lever to ensure students can thrive is high quality teaching. However, with a continuing recruitment and retention crisis, most acutely felt in schools serving deprived communities where excellent teachers are needed most, it is more important than ever to invest in the journey to longevity within the profession.
This session will equip mentors with high level mentoring actions and mechanisms and will support ITTs and ECTs in developing a deeper understanding of the role they play in the process of creating the next generation of teachers who will make a difference to our students.

Title Leadership Case Studies – Headteacher tales from the chalk face ***DOUBLE SESSION*** 1 hour 30 mins
Brief Join Carly Moran, headteacher of Orchard Park High School, as she shares the remarkable journey of transforming her school into one of Croydon’s top performers. Under her leadership, Orchard Park has achieved the highest comprehensive GCSE outcomes in the borough and recently received an exceptionally strong Ofsted report. In this session, Carly will explore the key strategies that have created a positive, hardworking school environment, focusing on teaching and learning, and her expertise in English. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the steps needed to drive rapid and sustainable school improvement.
Simon Phelps, headteacher of Five Acres High School, will take you through the inspiring transformation of his school from special measures to a high-performing institution. Under Simon’s leadership, Five Acres has achieved the highest GCSE results in the Greenshaw Learning Trust and the Forest of Dean, gaining recognition as a world-class school. In this session, Simon will highlight the power of community engagement and the strategies he employed to significantly improve academic outcomes. His insights will be invaluable for educators aiming to lead their schools to excellence and sustainable success.
Nat Nabarro, headteacher of Blaise High School, will share the journey of transforming his school from special measures to a strong ‘Good’ in just three years. Specialising in pastoral care and behaviour management, Nat has led Blaise High to achieve the highest GCSE outcomes in its history. This session will explore the strategies Nat employed to create a happy, hardworking school culture in one of Bristol’s most challenging areas. Participants will gain practical insights into the leadership approaches that foster strong academic results and positive school environments.

Session 3 – 11:35-12:20
Title Pastoral Teams – connecting and developing together
Brief This session aims to identify commonalities in our roles; to both support the reduction in time spent redundantly, and to maximise the effort in work that creates the best outcomes. Discussion and feedback from this session will help shape CORE policy, so that all stakeholders understand what inclusion means in CORE schools. All young people at CORE schools receive a right to discipline - building on self-regulation and a feeling of safety.

Title Work-life Balance – investing in the whole person
Brief We are constantly juggling the demands from all aspects of our lives, and it is very common for us to feel that we are be asked to do more in less time, both at home and at work, with the result that life can feel a little out of balance.
A poor life balance means that our family or work relationships are likely to suffer; we may feel we don’t have enough time for ourselves; and we may feel a little dissatisfied with life. But there are many simple things we can do each day that will help us keep life in more equilibrium.
This session will cover:
• Know what can potentially create imbalance and proactively address. circumstances with more positive thoughts, behaviours and actions.
• Create a sense of renewed personal equilibrium by understanding how to balance energy inputs and outputs.
• Identify what you need to do to give yourself a little more balance.
• Discuss practical solutions and learn how to develop a better-balanced life.

Title Reading and Talk for Learning – the key to unlocking…everything
Brief Good oral language skills are the foundation of learning to read. When children fall behind in language, they are much more likely to struggle with reading. The more words students know and the more opportunities they have for purposeful talk and reciprocal dialogue, the more words they can comprehend when they encounter these in their reading. This session will provide practical strategies for structuring talk in the classroom, building vocabulary and confidence in language, and developing verbal fluency to enable our students to unlock their reading potential.

Delivering a CORE Education - Our Sessions
Title Understanding the Power of Data – what to look at and through what lens (drop-in following)
Brief This session will review the various information systems that are utilised within CORE. The need to ensure that data silos are joined up and transformed, accurately and quickly, into information which enables data-driven actions aimed at improving outcomes for students will be demonstrated. One information system (Pupil Progress Tracker) will be featured with respect to its functionalities and how its use within schools can help to ensure that students achieve outcomes that are at least in line with the national average.

Please note that the dress code for DACE 24 is professional attire.
Lunch is buffet style, with all groups catered for.
Hot and cold drinks will be available throughout the day at refreshment points.
Public transport serves the area well – 10/15mins walk from New Stret/Moor Street, 5 mins from Snow Hill and several buses.
The car park is a short walk from the venue – please allow for this in travel time.
Car parking is council run – payment can be made by phone.

SESSION BOOKING
1. Programme Sharing:
• The programme will be shared with all colleagues during the week beginning 7/10 via email. At this stage, sessions will not be accessible on BlueSky.
• Colleagues can browse and earmark their sessions.
• CPD Leads within school can be contacted with any queries.
2. Session Booking:
• Sessions will be available for booking for one week beginning 14/10 on BlueSky (BlueSky Login). Once booked, sessions cannot be changed.
• Sessions are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and will be closed on BlueSky once capacity is reached. Colleagues are advised to consider backup sessions.
3. Booking Process
(instructions will be recommunicated when sessions are released):
• Log in to BlueSky: BlueSky – Home (top of screen) – Training (left-hand side of screen).
- Sessions will appear as tiles at the bottom of the page (all starting with ‘DACE24’). In the event you cannot see this, please enter ‘DACE24’ in the filter on the right-hand side of the page (shown below):
• Book your chosen sessions.
- Click into the tile for the session
- Click the blue button that says ‘Book and Create CPD’
- Fill out the short form, select:
• ‘Visible’
• ‘Does not require approval’
• ‘Not mandatory’
- Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click ‘Save’
• This session will then sit in your personal CPD feature (under your Home tab)
• If a session is marked as ‘Fully Booked’ there are no longer any spaces to attend.
• After DACE, you can mark sessions as ‘Completed/Attended’ in your Home CPD area.
• Every DACE delegate will receive a personalised, printed schedule as part of their registration at DACE.
