AC’s magic!
Black and white photography has suddenly become fashionable again. This is probably because of our new infatuation with digital photography and colour which has all but made it a forgotten art. This has now come full circle and it is as fresh and exciting as it always was. There is no doubt that there is something really quite emotive about a good black and white image. Is it nostalgia for the past? Maybe. Personally I think it’s because black and white strips out the obvious and requires the audience to use imagination and draw conclusions from their own experience. In other words it is more challenging than looking at a coloured image and therefore more satisfying to look at. On the face of it, turning a colour photograph into black & white is a pretty simple task . You can take any basic photo imaging software - Picasa for example - and then just follow the instructions on how to desaturate (remove) the colour from the image. Occasionally this will work fine. However - and it’s a big ‘however’ - most other times the resulting image will look dreadfully flat and lifeless and it will have lost all it’s original ‘punch’. In simple terms this is because there are literally millions of shades in the colour spectrum and they each produce a different tone once the colour is removed. This is especially true when dealing with mixtures containing mainly reds, yellows, blues or magentas. It takes an experienced and skilled eye to know how to most effectively convert these different colours especially when they are all combined in an image. 25 years as a fashion photographer - where colour is of major importance has taught me how to ‘see’ colour in black and white. The enclosed samples will give you an idea of the difference - sometimes quite subtle - between a good black & white conversion and an ordinary one. The black & white photographs might all look acceptable to you on a computer screen but believe me it’s another thing entirely when you come to print them. So if you have a really favourite image - be it of family or friends, holidays, special moments, landscapes, pets or even possessions and you would like to see it as a great black & white image, e-mail it to me and I’ll send it back to correctly converted from colour so it can be viewed and printed in black & white as black & white should be!
This service is absolutely FREE. Just e-mail your picture to me ancowin@aol.com I will then convert it and send it back to you. It’s that simple! Any reasonably sized image will do but it must be sharp and correctly exposed - of course! 43 Bromyard Road . Worcester . WR2 5BZ alistaircowin.com . 01905 421924
