THE VOICE OF AMF ZAWDI MC IS THE VOICE OF AMF. THIS IS HIS SECOND YEAR ROCKING IT WITH THE HOTTEST DJS OF THE WORLD IN THE BIGGEST VENUE OF THE COUNTRY. BUT THIS EXOTIC, STYLISH MAN KNOWS HOW TO KEEP HIS COOL DURING AN EVENT AS BIG AS THIS. OR DOES HE? ZAWDI MC ON HIS HOMETOWN, NERVES AND THE AMF CROWD. The AMF Newspaper is probably the only piece of printed paper you will have in your hands this week, besides maybe a city map of Amsterdam and of course your entrance tickets. And here’s a column by me! Though quite a few of you may know me, some might not. So let me introduce myself: my name is Zawdi MC, and Amsterdam is my stomping ground. Amsterdam is my favourite place year-round, but during AMF, the city reaches new heights. I travel a lot and have been lucky to see many beautiful places, but nothing compares to AMF. Last year was my first time ever hosting AMF in the Amsterdam ArenA, and it turned into an epic night that I’ll never forget. The Amsterdam ArenA is where I went to my first huge dance party as an 18-year old guy. You can imagine that getting to MC this venue now made me more than a little nervous. “Will everything go well?” “Will I say something stupid on the live stream?” “Will I fall flat on my face? Miss a cue?” My head was spinning, but when the gates opened and the ArenA filled up with excited people, the nerves disappeared. Walking to the stage it was like time was standing still. Then the spotlights went on. I forgot everything around me and I just did what I love to do. Only this time I was doing it in a stadium full of fans united just for this event – what a thrill! There’s something very special about seeing your DJ friends perform in your own country, or in this case, even better: in the city where we all grew up. That’s why we all get a bit more nervous before a show like AMF. Even though we are all professionals who are so used to performing that it rarely throws us off balance anymore, performing in your own hometown comes with an extra layer of pressure. We all have to deliver, but we also really want to. Full circle. International DJs tend to say that the Dutch crowd is hard to please, but they love to perform in the Netherlands because they have to step up their game. Even though Holland is a small country, the venues are spread throughout and clubbers are welcoming all over. This is how Dutch DJs like Afrojack, Hardwell and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano got their experience before going abroad, catering to the wide spectrum of Dutch party people. They’re not an easy crowd because they know what they like, and I think this is one of the reasons why the Netherlands has so many good DJs. The crowd keeps you working for it! AMF is the best example of a festival that brings that wide spectrum of party people together in one big venue. The biggest of the country, actually: the ArenA. And for two days in a row, too. I know all of us, party people as well as artists, will have that exciting nervous feeling upon arriving at the ArenA. It’s the best feeling in the world! I’m signing off, hope to see you at AMF! Zawdi MC

AMF 2016 being our fourth edition, we’ve nurtured what was once a dream to grow so big that it no longer fits its old skin. Quite literally, AMF has become bigger than ever. The Heineken Music Hall, the ArenA and the Ziggo Dome: we are taking over a part of Amsterdam that contains three of the city’s (and even the country’s!) largest venues. Together, they host a third of ADE’s visitors. People fly in from all over the world to be here: half of our visitors are international clubbers. And that’s not to mention AMF TV, broadcasting online to 180 countries worldwide! All of that good stuff will be extended over five consecutive days for the first time, too. Everyone here at the AMF team – both from ALDA and from ID&T – is excited beyond words for what’s to come. With the DJ Mag Awards and an exciting young winner this year, we’re definitely off to a good start. The rest of the week isn’t going to disappoint from here on either, and with only a limited amount of tickets left for the final events, we know you agree with us. This is going to be a week for the history books. Please dance, laugh and party to your heart’s content, whatever AMF event you decide to visit. Come spread your wings with us. We love having you back in town! Team AMF

NEWS JAY HARDWAY’S SPECIAL GIFT TO AMF

DANCE4LIFE: DANCING FOR A BETTER WORLD There’s more to life than music and parties, and AMF is collaborating with dance4life to contribute to their cause. Dance4life educates and empowers young people worldwide through the universal language of music. Dance4life provides them with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to protect their health and promote safe sexual choices. AMF is donating 25 cents of every ticket to dance4life, to help them in their quest for education and protection for everyone.

Amsterdam-based DJ Jay Hardway created the musical anthem for this year’s AMF. “When I was approached by the organization to produce the AMF anthem I wanted to combine the feelings I have with Amsterdam with the whole feeling of AMF,” the young DJ says. “I’ve been living in Amsterdam for three years now, and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the city,” the young DJ says. “There are so many creative people living here, and so

many folks from the music industry that make it a wonderful place to live and work.”

A SUPERSTAR’S RIDE OF CHOICE

The moment Hardway is looking forward the most? “When I’m in the DJ booth, playing the anthem for the whole crowd to hear, and I see everyone go crazy when the drop comes. Those are the best moments for a DJ.” Jay Hardway will play the anthem during T-Mobile presents AMF ArenA on Saturday.

WANT TO KEEP ON DANCING? We can imagine that you just can’t get enough of AMF… even after a whole week of partying and dancing with the best DJs in the world. Once you’re back home, ready to enjoy more of the DJs that you’ve raved to this week, tune into Dutch radio channel 538! Radio 538 is AMF’s official media partner and home to radio shows by Dutch legends Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, and Martin Garrix on Friday night. And that’s not all: every Saturday, Hardwell kicks off the night, followed by Nicky Romero, Afrojack, and David Guetta. Tune in and keep on dancing!

Over 50 artists from all over the world are coming to AMF, and none of them can be late to the party. To make sure their ride is as smooth as possible, AMF has teamed up with Audi. Every artist will be picked up by the one of the branded luxury Audi vehicles. Wave if you see one of those driving around, because there’s a good chance one of your favourite DJs is in the backseat!

Have you seen the UGo taxis around town yet? UGo is the official transportation partner of AMF, making sure everyone gets to the festival safely. The upside of UGo? Transparent prices and a system that lets customers book a taxi in advance – you’ll never be late because there were no taxis available. Marcel Stephan (UGo) says, “The whole city is flooded with dance lovers during ADE and they all want a taxi at the same times. By giving people the opportunity to book a taxi in advance, we can schedule our cars so that everyone will make it to their destination in time.”

OLIVER HELDENS “I would really like Martin Garrix to become the new No. 1, because he represents a new generation of which I’m a part as well. I’m not thinking too much about my own position, I’m just focusing on making music.”

A WARM WELCOME MARTIN CARVELL (DJ MAG) “I’m psyched to be in Amsterdam and to see 60 new entries and 3 re-entries in the list, so it is a very exciting edition. I know who the new No. 1 will be, but I’m not telling!”

Special events call for special features. And what says ‘special’ better than a red carpet event? The crowning of the new No. 1 DJ of the world attracts international hotshots from the industry, as well as famous Dutchies. With so many young, successful (and let’s admit it; beautiful) people joining us tonight, the red carpet is overflowing with exciting energy. Can you say ‘wow’?!

JOHN EWBANK “I’ve been to quite a lot of music awards shows, so I think this one will be similar. First a lot of speeches and afterwards a big party. Luckily I’m wearing my dancing shoes.”

FLORIAN PICASSO “I hope a Dutch friend of mine that I’m releasing a new track with this Friday will become the new number one…” BOYAN SLAT (OCEAN CLEANUP PROGRAM) “Partying and saving the world is a good combination! I don’t go to dance parties often so I’m excited for tonight.”

KSHMR “I looked all over Holland to find this traditional Indian outfit and I’m so glad we found it. I hope that Garrix will become the new No. 1, or Darude. You know, from ‘Sandstorm’.”

QUINTINO “I don’t think I’ll take first place this year, but I hope Martin Garrix brings the trophy back to the Netherlands.”

19.10.2016

SWANKY TUNES “It’s unbelievable that we’re here, we can’t describe the feeling. Most of our votes last year came from Russia, but this year we have a bigger fanbase so we’re hoping for a higher spot!”

PAGE 009

THE MAKINGS OF A NUMBER ONE THE VOTES HAVE BEEN CAST, THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE HAS BEEN HEARD, AND LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE A NEW NUMBER ONE: MARTIN GARRIX! HE’S WORKED HARDER THAN EVER THIS YEAR, AND IT’S A WELL-DESERVED TITLE FOR THE 20-YEAR OLD PRODIGY FROM THE AMSTERDAM SUBURBS. WE ALL KNOW HIS MONSTER HIT ‘ANIMALS’, WE ALL KNOW ABOUT HIS VARIED AND EXPLOSIVE DJ SETS – BUT WHAT REALLY MADE MARTIN INTO THIS YEAR’S NO. 1 DJ? It’s a unique feat – becoming the world’s No. 1 DJ with a career really only spanning four years, and at only 20 years of age. But Martin, a self-declared ‘computer nerd’, didn’t get there just by looking good and knowing the right people. In fact, he’s never been one to rely on anything but hard work. When not on tour, he still spends up to 12 hours a day in the studio, churning out tracks like there’s no tomorrow. And even before he had his first tracks released, that work paid off: he got admitted to the Herman Brood Academie, a specialized music academy, before he’d even finished high school. All of that was a different world compared to the one Martin is in now, however. His touring schedule involves mainstage upon mainstage, held together by intercontinental flights and a lack of sleep. Still, in the year leading up to his #1 position, Martin has not been content just touring and releasing a few tracks – far from it, in fact. And perhaps that’s the reason why he won in the first place. As it happens, Martin ended his engagement with Spinnin’ Records a while before ADE 2015, citing several differences of opinion as reasons. He went ‘underground’ for a little while, only to emerge stronger than ever. Soon, the announcement came that Garrix was setting up his own label, allowing him complete creative freedom as well as ownership over all of his music. In March this year, STMPD records was born and along with it came an explosion of creativity from Garrix. Breaking away from the exclusive focus on ‘big room’ house and the typical EDM sound, Martin surprised crowds the world over with future bass (‘In the Name of Love’), melodic electro (‘Oops’) and a lot more unreleased variety. Yet all of his music remained recognizably ‘Martin’. It carries the mark of a true pop star: always recognizable, always catchy, but never limited by bland genre definitions. What, then, are the makings of this year’s No. 1 DJ? A relentlessly creative mind, on the one hand, and a loyal and open-minded fanbase, on the other. As the man himself put it tonight: “It feels unreal to have won. I 100% did not expect it at all. I’ve had an amazing year, with awesome shows and amazing fans — I’m so thankful for their support.” Martin never took to social media to ask for votes, and yet he came out on top. It only goes to show how well his new musical direction was received. As a fresh wind is starting to blow through all of dance music, as EDM and pop are merging further, there is only one way to remain at the top of the game: you have to build a self-made, diverse, and well-supported creative empire. And that’s exactly what Martin has done. Congratulations, Martin Garrix, on your first place in DJ Mag’s 2016 Top 100 DJs poll!

Tiësto no longer needs an introduction. The Grammy Award -winning DJ gained his fame as a true trance legend and he’s never left the top of the dance industry since. He is a former No. 1 DJ and may be described as a true musical innovator. He’s earned his spurs not only by surviving for decades at the top, but also by actively contributing to the evolution of dance music as we know it. His label Musical Freedom and the recently announced deep house label AFTR:HRS keep him sharp and fresh, ready to conquer stages and studios for many years to come.

Afrojack is a Dutch DJ and producer who has been around for more then a decade now. He’s been listed in the DJ Mag Top 100 for over five years, and in the meantime, he’s headlined all of the major festivals. He runs his own record label, Wall Recordings, offering upcoming talent a decent way to start off their musical careers. His label rewards him with a fresh stream of influences and inspiration, which results in tracks like ‘Hey’ with the talented singer, Fais. The collaboration was a success, the two hit it off, and they just debuted their new track ‘Used To Have It All’.

OLIVER HELDENS

THE NETHERLANDS Highest House DJ 2015: #12

Oliver Heldens caught Tiësto’s attention in back 2013 with his track ‘Gecko’. He got signed to the ‘Musical Freedom’ label and started exploring his musical path of life. Oliver Heldens entered the DJ Mag top 100 in 2014 and has been climbing to the top ever since. Last year his number 12 position made him the highest ranked future house DJ on the list. In the meanwhile, he earned a spot as a resident DJ on BBC Radio 1 and started his own record label Heldeep Records, where he also releases tracks himself under the alias HI-LO. Oliver Heldens is not done with you yet!

For the last couple of years, the Dutch duo W&W have crossed boundaries with their productions as well as their performances. Combining trance, electro and house influences, their productions are truly one of a kind and earned them a well-deserved spot at the top of the industry. Combining this power in collabs with names like Hardwell and Armin van Buuren resulted in some of the biggest tracks we know to date. This year’s collab ‘Arcade’ with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and W&W’s festival mixes of Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ and Adele’s ‘Hello’ prove that these guys have only just begun.

Songs like ‘Sun is Shining’, ‘Thinking About You’ and ‘On My Way’ are being played all over the globe and provide the Axwell Ingrosso brand with a characteristic, uplifting sound. The chemistry of the duo, each successful artists in their own right, is a sight to behold and makes them massively popular. THIS YEAR’S EDITION OF THE AMSTERDAM DANCE EVENT OFFICIALLY KICKED OFF TODAY. HOW ARE YOU FEELING? “I’m feeling great! We have a lot of work to do of course, but it’s more than worth it every year. I just cycled through the city and I’m slowly seeing the streets turn black and yellow, which makes me realise the time has finally come again. This is always a fantastic feeling. Every dance related company is represented here, everybody comes together to network and catch up, meet new people, and most importantly have a great time.” THERE IS ALMOST TOO MUCH TO DO THIS WEEKEND, BUT WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST? “Just meeting everybody again and bringing this all together. We have a year of preparation behind us, so this is the week we have all been working for. This year’s edition has some new additions again, of course, so we are very excited to see what the result will be.” YOU’RE SAYING NEW ADDITIONS, WHAT NEW EVENTS CAN WE EXPECT THIS YEAR? “We have three new exciting projects. One of them is ADE Hackaton, where hundreds of programmers work together for 24 hours in a row. In these 24 hours, they want to find solutions for subjects related to security, festival experience and logistics. We see more and more technology companies attending ADE, which inspired us to come up with this new event. Apart from that, we also have a special ADE city-campsite at the NDSM wharf. At that legendary venue guests will be welcomed to a heated campsite. There’s more than four hundred places to sleep and, of course, a proper line-up.” AMF IS A PART OF ADE, AND FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS BOTH BRANDS HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO MAKE THEIR NAMES KNOWN AROUND THE WORLD. HOW DO YOU SEE THE ROLE OF AMF DURING THE ADE WEEK?

“ADE needs an event like this” “I can remember the first edition very well, four years ago. Needless to say, it was an exciting day both for ALDA and ID&T as well as for us. Neither of us really knew what to expect, how the crowd would react to such a massive event during the Amsterdam Dance Event. It was great to see how the people responded. I am still visiting AMF every year. I can only drop by for something like 30 minutes since I have a very busy schedule, but those 30 minutes are always great fun. It is obvious that ADE needs an event like this.” WHEN YOU SAY ADE NEEDS AN EVENT LIKE AMF, WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU MEAN?

“Well, since dance music has evolved a lot over the past decades, it’s important to make sure we grow at the same pace, too. AMF offers a stage where the world’s biggest artists can come and play to their fans. Nowadays some DJs have become true stars. It’s very important to make sure we offer the events that these artists deserve. AMF is the perfect contender for this job – we need an organisation that is capable of delivering such a top-notch event. It’s also really nice that ALDA and ID&T still keeps offering new talent a chance to showcase their skills. So, yeah, I am very happy that AMF is a part of the Amsterdam Dance Event!”

PAUL PYRO TECHNICIAN “I’m working for Grooney Pyro Effects tonight. As you might have already guessed, we are responsible for all the fireworks and special effects involved in the show. I’ve already had three AMFs. I started in 2013 in the RAI, which was also my first gig. AMF is a beautiful production, with a lot of technical highlights and just a week full of partying. It’s great!”

DIDIER PICTURE EDITOR

CASPER SOUND ENGINEER “I am the sound technician for ALDA Events. I’ve been working on the Amsterdam Dance Event for years now, both in the Heineken Music Hall and the Ziggo Dome, but not for AMF yet. This is my first edition! Usually I am responsible for the sound engineering at all ALDA events worldwide, so it still feels like coming home. It’s a big but great responsibility of course.”

MARC PHOTOGRAPHER

“I am the picture editor for ALDA Events. When photographers bring their pictures in, I check them out and see which ones are good enough to release. All pictures are added to a Dropbox folder right away, so artists, sponsors and other partners can access them immediately. I’ve seen quite a lot of ALDA events already, and it’s always great fun to work with this team.”

“I’m a freelance photographer in the dance industry! It’s the best job in the world, I work at numerous events all over the globe. I’ve been to all editions of AMF so far; it’s a nice event to be a part of every year. The whole week will be one big rollercoaster for me, like it is every year. But, I have a lot of work to do, so I really need to run now!”

#THISISMYAMF

#THISISMYAMF IS AN ONLINE PLATFORM TO SHARE, COMMENT AND CONNECT WITH EVERYONE BEFORE AND DURING AMF. AND WHEN WE SAY ‘EVERYONE’, WE REALLY DO MEAN EVERYONE. MORE THAN JUST A HASHTAG, THISISMYAMF.COM COLLECTS POSTS TAGGED #THISISMYAMF FROM ALL MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA. FROM CREW MEMBERS TO FANS TO ARTISTS, THEY’RE ALL CONNECTED THROUGH THE #THISISMYAMF PLATFORM. ON THIS PAGE, YOU’LL GET TO KNOW SOME OF OUR CREW. ON THE NEXT PAGE, YOU CAN CONNECT WITH YOUR FELLOW CLUBBERS. AND LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST, THERE’S AN INTERVIEW WITH ARMIN VAN BUUREN, WHO WILL TELL YOU MORE ABOUT WHAT HIS AMF IS LIKE AS AN ARTIST. KEEP SHARING THAT LOVE, AND CONNECT WITH US AND EACH OTHER THROUGH #THISISMYAMF!

SOPHIE LIVE BROADCAST “I work for ALDA Events and tonight I’m responsible for the live broadcast during AMF. That means I oversee all updates via social media, but also the broadcasting on the AMF TV platform. This is the third time that I’m a part of the festival. I started out here as an intern and that was great, so I decided to stay here!”

RUBEN & EMIEL LIGHT TECHNICIANS “We are both light technicians! We’ve been working very hard for the past few days to make sure all the lights are in the right place and connected properly. Right now we are searching for possible errors to make sure we produce a flawless show tonight. Ruben will stay in the Heineken Music Hall the whole week, but Emiel will move to the RAI tomorrow.”

JANINE & MARJOLEIN CATERING MANAGEMENT “We are responsible for planning and managing all the catering-related stuff. We’re responsible for around 70 to 75 people tonight. Some work at the cash desk, some are manning the bars and others are located on the VIP deck. Our mission tonight is to give every visitor a great stay, and with so many people to manage we will probably have a hectic night again.”

SUZANNE LIVESTREAM PRODUCER “I’m a part of Nomobo, the company responsible for capturing tonight’s live broadcast. We need to make sure everything inside and around the Heineken Music Hall is being filmed and edited properly. It’s important to make sure every last bit is captured, from the red carpet to the announcement of this year’s no. 1. My responsibility is to make sure our whole crew can do their work without obstacles.”

PAGE 019

STILL ON TOP OF HIS GAME ARMIN VAN BUUREN IS A LONGTIME REGULAR AT ADE AND AMF AS WELL AS IN THE DJ MAG TOP 100. BUT BEING A REGULAR DOESN’T MEAN THAT HE’S STARTING TO TAKE IT SLOW. ON THE CONTRARY: HIS EMBRACE TOUR IS TAKING HIM ALL AROUND THE GLOBE, AND HE HAS ‘SOMETHING BIG TO ANNOUNCE’ ON NOVEMBER 10TH.

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT YOUR FIRST ADE, NOR YOUR FIRST AMF. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE TWO GROW OVER THE YEARS?

YOUR EMBRACE TOUR THEN – THAT’S BEEN RUNNING FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. HOW’S THAT GOING?

“In 1999 I was at ADE and closed this big deal, which was a really important moment in my career. Back then the event was a lot smaller, you’d see a lot of people from record labels carrying around bags full of vinyl.

“We’ve really picked up the pace on the tour. Since the weekend with Jerusalem, Istanbul, and Minsk, I really feel that it has all come together. Everyone has more confidence about their part, so the show is better than ever. I think that’s only natural, since there are so many elements and artists working together.”

ADE has grown a lot since then. Everything you’ll hear from DJs in the coming months is decided here. The way ADE is set up plays a huge part in that; it’s huge, but it remains small in a way. It’s not held in one big conference hall but in multiple nice locations, none of which are too far away from each other. If you ask me, AMF is to the fall what Tomorrowland is to the summer: one of the absolute highlights of the year. It is something that we prepare for months in advance with the team. It’s an absolute dream to play in the ArenA in front of so many people, and with the whole world watching too. It is a place where I really want to surprise the audience, so you can expect something new!” TALKING ABOUT ‘SOMETHING NEW’, WE HEARD YOU HAVE SOMETHING BIG TO ANNOUNCE. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN ON NOVEMBER 10TH? “[Laughs] Unfortunately not! You’ll just have to wait and see, but I promise it’s really, really big.”

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH (GREAT) LIVE ARTISTS DURING A SHOW? “I only wanted to work with live artists if they could really contribute something extra to the show. We work with a complex time coding system combined with a ‘click track’ system. The artists hear clicks in their earpieces so they know exactly when they’re up. We rented the Brabanthallen in the Netherlands and practiced for three weeks with this technique. It is the combination between talented artists and the newest technology that makes this show so special.” YOU’VE BEEN THE NO. 1 DJ OF THE WORLD FIVE TIMES IN THE PAST. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? WOULD YOU LIKE TO WIN AGAIN? “Every time I won, it was absolutely fantastic, but it definitely changes something. People are suddenly not coming to see Armin van Buuren anymore, but they’re coming to see the No. 1 DJ of the world. It comes with a huge pressure. Nowadays I can be myself more, do the things that I want to do more. But I would be lying if I said that I wouldn’t want to win it anymore.” WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MARTIN GARRIX, THE NEW #1 OF THIS YEAR? “He absolutely deserves it. He’s the face of a new generation of clubbers that also inspires me. Martin is a super nice guy, he works hard and I’m proud that the title is back in the Netherlands as well!” YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT A NEW GENERATION OF DJS AND CLUBBERS. IT SEEMS THAT THIS GENERATION OF DJS IS LESS ABOUT OLD-SCHOOL DJ’ING AND MORE ABOUT CREATING A SHOW. ALMOST

EVERYONE PLAYS PRE-RECORDED SETS AT THE BIG EVENTS. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? “I have mixed feelings about this, because I don’t really feel like I am the one to say anything about it. If the crowd loves it, they love it. If you can take the stage at the ArenA with a banjo and make the audience go crazy, who am I to judge? It is easy to criticize, but they are all awesome shows. Personally I like to tell a story through a DJ set, to take people on a journey, to feel what the crowd wants and to adapt. That disappears completely with a pre-recorded set. The upside to my approach is that I have so much variety. One week I’m playing a 7-hour set in Ushuaïa, the next I’m going on tour with 27 people, and the week after I’m on stage for a one-hour set at AMF.” ALL RIGHT, ARMIN. DJ’ING IS ALL ABOUT CHOOSING THE BEST TRACK FOR THE MOMENT. SO TO ROUND THINGS OFF, LET’S HAVE YOU MAKE A COUPLE DIFFICULT DJ CHOICES. WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE A SUNDAY MORNING WALK IN THE FOREST WITH YOUR FAMILY OR A SOLD-OUT SHOW? “Difficult, but I’d still pick the sold-out show.” ARE YOU TAKING CHOCOLATE SPRINKLES OR PEANUT BUTTER WITH YOU ON TOUR? “Chocolate sprinkles!” ADE OR IBIZA? “ADE.” AN HOUR OF YOGA OR AN HOUR OF RUNNING? “Running.” OPENING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL OR THE OLYMPIC GAMES? “The Olympics!”

OF

Though he hasn’t performed at an Olympic opening ceremony just yet, Armin is certainly on top of his own game right now. We’re looking forward to see what he has in store this November, and would like to congratulate him with his 4 spot in the Top 100!

THE VETERAN & THE NEWBIE

SAM HOMEWOOD, THOUGH ONLY 28, MIGHT BE CONSIDERED AN AMF TV VETERAN. THIS IS HIS FOURTH YEAR HOSTING THE SHOW. TO TURN THINGS UP A NOTCH, HE HAS A BRAND NEW CO-HOST BY HIS SIDE THIS YEAR: SOPHIE PURDIE. WE SAT DOWN WITH THEM FOR A CHAT BEFORE SHOWTIME IN AMSTERDAM TODAY.

“There’s never a dull moment with AMF in general anyway, it’s different every year. Somehow it just always gets bigger and better,” Sam kicks off our conversation. The two co-hosts haven’t worked together before, but he’s not worried about that in the slightest. “The team at AMF is always amazing, and having Sophie as a new addition will be a great new experience, I’m sure.” Veteran Sam will help newbie Sophie keep her cool. “I’ve looked up his work and he seems very easy going,” she says. “For me, presenting is a completely new experience. Of course this is an amazing opportunity, but I am glad I’ll be working with someone as experienced as Sam. I am really looking forward to working with him.” It’s not just that the two hadn’t met before; they haven’t been to AMF as visitors either. “I always seem to be working,” Sam laughs. “Not that I mind!” Sophie: “I’ve never been to AMF either, which is quite exciting. I’ve wanted to go to an electronic festival for a few years now, but never had the chance to. I’m sure AMF will be a great first experience in every single way. I’m actually a little bit afraid everything else can only disappoint after this!” Sam can’t argue with that. Though both he and Sophie are used to being in the

spotlight, an ArenA full of clubbers is a whole other story. “The best thing is getting on stage. I’m secretly really looking forward to that, it’s an incredible feeling.” Sophie: “I hope I can check out some of Tiësto’s live set on Friday. His tracks remind me of previous parties and memories with mates, I really cherish those and I love his music. But if that doesn’t work out, then I would love to interview him. Everyone I have spoken to who’s met him says he’s a lovely guy to interview.” Sam: “Funny you mention him! My most memorable interview last year was definitely Tiësto. He told me how he gets met at every airport by someone with a puppy when he travels. He really loves dogs, but he can’t have his own as he travels too much. So he gets a furry welcome-snuggle wherever he goes. Isn’t that just brilliant?” Sam has interviewed just about every other DJ that has ever visited Amsterdam by now, and he eases any nerves Sophie might have about these hotshot superstars. “They are always so excited and clearly loving the day. They bring a lot of positive energy.” Sophie: “I’m looking forward to meeting all of them, as you can probably tell, I am really excited!” We can definitely tell, as Sophie is about as positively energetic as

that vibe as well.” Sophie lets out a nervous laugh. “My Grandfather worked in the field of live television, I asked him for a few tips. Just like singing, I just need to remember to keep breathing.” We have a professional in the making already!

Sam’s face lights up: “I was on stage last year for the award ceremony. It’s amazing to share the stage with the DJs. I was lucky enough to join Hardwell during the last show of his tour and I was on the edge of the stage as he finished his set. Man, that was something I won’t forget for a long time!” Sam usually spends his working hours in front of the camera. Besides AMF TV, he hosts a morning TV show for children. “The atmosphere is very different, but I love my job and all the things I get to do.”

“Luckily even the DJs maintain a level of calm which you probably wouldn’t expect,” Sam continues. “They’re excited, but very professional.” He is ever the gentleman you’d expect him to be, reassuring his new partner in crime. “I ended up at last year’s No. 1 DJs afterparty, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike personally invited me. Really cool. You’ll be fine, I promise this is going to be epic.” Sophie seems more relaxed. “I really want to carry on exploring the EDM field as a vocalist. I would love the opportunity to work with some of the DJs at AMF. Who knows what the future holds!”

AMF TV is broadcasted live, to viewers in over a 180 countries worldwide. Not to mention the worldwide trending on social media. “Oh, don’t do this to me!”, Sophie laughs. “I’m doing as much research as I can, as I think it’s very important to be prepared. But the thing with live TV is that you don’t get a re-take. Live TV is so much more intense!” Luckily, there’s Super Sam to the rescue. “Don’t panic. When you make sure you know as much as possible about the event, and the schedule leading up to the event, you know what’s happening, and then there’s plenty of opportunity to just enjoy it. THE DANCE TRIANGLE The three AMF venues have a combined capacity of 53,500 party people, meaning that one fifth of the week’s total ADE visitors could drop by – all at once. Combine this with the fact that all the biggest DJs in the world are attending AMF, and you can’t deny that the festival has become a force to be reckoned with.

AMSTERDAM DANCE EVENT IS THE WORLD’S BIGGEST CLUB FESTIVAL, ATTRACTING NEARLY 400,000 DANCE LOVERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS, IN AND AROUND THE AMSTERDAM ARENA, AMF HAS BECOME ONE OF ITS CORNERSTONES. AMF IS THE FIRST ADE EVENT EVER TO SPREAD ACROSS THREE VENUES, FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF 100,000 VISITORS. TOGETHER, THE AMSTERDAM ARENA, THE ZIGGO DOME AND THE HEINEKEN MUSIC HALL FORM AMF’S TRIANGLE OF DANCE.

When you take a closer look at our triangle of dance, the Amsterdam ArenA is the first venue to pop into sight. This colossal football stadium is the home of Ajax, the biggest football club of the Netherlands. Their home games are attended by tens of thousands of visitors, sheltered by a retractable roof. Besides historical football matches (the Champions League final of 1998 between Juventus and Real Madrid, for instance), it has hosted some exceptional events in the cultural spectrum. In its opening year Michael Jackson performed here, and in the years that followed artists such as Eminem, The Rolling Stones, Metallica and The Backstreet Boys followed the King of Pop. Talking about kings, the ArenA even hosted the royal wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in 2002! Next up, the Ziggo Dome is the second largest venue of the triangle, and it’s impossible to miss! ‘The Ziggo’ has no less than 840,000 LED lights decorating its exterior. Together, they form an enormous video screen, literally turning the venue into a beacon of light. With a capacity of 17,000, it’s been the largest entertainment venue in Amsterdam since its opening in 2012. Immediately after

it opened, the Ziggo Dome attracted world famous artists such as Lady Gaga, Madonna and Beyoncé, and last year our very own Armin van Buuren kicked off his Armin Only Embrace tour here. Now, it’s time for another Dutch DJ legend to turn the place upside down, AMF style: DJ Tiësto is hosting the 500th edition of Clublife at the Ziggo Dome on Friday. On Saturday the SLAM! Mixmarathon will follow suit. The most intimate of the three party locations is the Heineken Music Hall. Also known as the ‘HMH’, this is still not a small room, with approximately 600,000 visitors each year. The HMH is the self-proclaimed concert venue with the best acoustics in the world and is definitely one of the most renowned music halls in the Netherlands and even in Europe. It’s received the most nominations for the Popstar Award as ‘Best International Concert Venue’ and has hosted a wild variety of artists, from Tiësto to The Offspring and from Snoop Dogg to Kraftwerk. During AMF, it is the busiest venue of our triangle, featuring the opening as well as the closing shows, besides Hardwell Presents: Revealed on Thursday, and the world famous Swedish duo Axwell Ingrosso on Saturday. Starting out as a one-day event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of dance music in 2013, AMF has grown into a massive event that takes over a complete part of Amsterdam. Or, as David Guetta puts it: “AMF is the place where every DJ is. Every year I am looking at it growing and growing and it is amazing.” 19.10.2016
