B A Mountain Home
A Home for Orphaned Children
A Group Service Project - Urban Study in eSwatini, Africa
In my university the last studio is a group service project where we will find a worthy cause and design for them. We chose a NGO that needed a orphanage. We traveled to sWatini for two weeks in September to scope out our site and meet the children we would serve and traveled around the country to study the local architecture and building types.
The "orphanage" was re branded to "children's village", because it was designed to feel like a community, this place is meant to become a home for the children. We were split into two team the resort and the orphanage village my role in this project was focused on design of the children's village (the resort was planned as a way to generate income for the children village).
My role in this project was the architectural design of the children village. For this rendering my team and I drew up the preliminary design and then I modeled it on Revit & SketchUp, rendered with Lumion, and edited with Photoshop.
The church is a central point of their community that has a special view from the second story straight into the mountains and the amphitheater is a flow out space and a place to relax and reflect, as well as provide children a venue for artistic performances.
Homes for Children
The residential family units have been designed to be the building blocks for a nurturing and self-sustaining community. Each individual household will be the home for a group of 4-6 children, cared for by a trained Auntie or Uncle. The spaces within the residential compound have been designed with the purpose of providing the children with an adequate shelter to grow, learn and commute. The design also insures that each child have privacy in a nurturing a healthy social habitat with many opportunities for shared community spaces. While each individual house has their own kitchenette, the shared kitchen are designed with thatched roof where family units will alternatively spend evenings learning valuable homemaking skills like cooking, cleaning, and, as they grow older, the opportunity to practice the traditional craft of
Homes for Children
Water Collection
In a comunity oriented culture, it is very essential that the houses have gathering spaces in order to embrace and cultivate it. The design provides the children with different gathering spaces for them.
02
Shared Kitchen
The houses are grouped around a shared family kitchen where family units will spend evenings together while chilldren learn valuable homemaking skills like cooking and cleaning.
03
Photovoltaic roofs
Because of log sunny hours on site, with sloped roofs houses, we have an opportunity to have roof solar panels that will help with the consuption of energy in a more sustainable way.
04
Children’s gardens
Each house will have an adjoining garden, where children can learn how to grow and care for fresh vegetables and herbs that may become a part of their family meals in order to give them an adequate, balanced and healthy diet.
Children’s Village
Community Impact
This INTSABA village has been designed to incorporate healthy living, learning, social life, and to be centered around God. This village really is trying to show God’s love throughout it and this verse really speaks to what we are trying to accomplish by building it. Mark 9:36-37 talks about whoever takes in one of God’s children is taking in God. We wanted to keep a sense of the Swazi tradition alive so the children growing up there knew where they were from. We incorporated a traditional Swazi homestead in the center of the village and what is the grandma’s house in the traditional homestead we put our Father in Heavens House, the church. The children’s housing is the furthest thing away from the public space and this is for security reasons. A special thing about this village is the opportunity for the children living here to experience outside involvement. There is a section of this village that is open to the public and this gives the children a way to interact with people from the “outside”. The village should be a light to others and show the love of Christ to those living around it.
A Vast Mountain Farm
The grand valley farm is a 1075 acres mountainous farm with an elevation of 3568 feet. It is considered a high veld with an average annual rainfall of 34inches. The site is scenic and is accessible from the route MR9.
Plenty of Water

The Land
Natural Beauty
Being a very mountainous site, there is no place in the site that doesn’t give a breath taking view of the beauty of the Swaziland Mountains. The expansive piece of land is found in a rural setting where the air is still very clean and pristine

A Mixed-Use Development
This project is a mixed use development in South Bend, Indiana. The site is on a 75,000 s.f. land located next to a park and a hospital in a up and coming area in the city. This particular site the has potential to link the residential of town to to the down town. The intent is to use an entrepreneurship approach to develop the project using the adjacent park and the hospital as a opportunity to create development that would benefit the local economy and residences in the community. Also this project has the potential to help people become healthier by opening up a health food grocery store and gym.

"The Lardon specializes in charcuterie and salumi, all made on site. At the heartbeat of the restaurant is their charcuterie cave, a one-of-a-kind curing room. A massive picture window sits at the center of the room where guests can view cured meat offerings. A 110-year-old building, with exposed brick walls and original wood joists. Resorted antique honeycomb tiled floors pay homage to a bygone era in classic Chicago design, while white subway tiles line the back bar of the light-filled space. Inspired in part by old-world butcher shops, salumerias, and cafes across the globe."
