Hellomy name is Caitlyn. I am a young deaf woman and I use British Sign Language (BSL) as my first language.

I am currently on a supported internship within the Alder Hey Charity team. My first work placement was in the Old Swan Charity shop. This was my first time in a work environment and all of the staff were amazing, they gave me the support I needed to adapt to this environment and they made me feel welcome and a part of the team.

The second part of my placement was in the Alder Hey Charity atrium shop. This was another amazing experience working with the team. They have been so supportive and inclusive, and I have been fully involved in

every part of the operation. They even invited me to teach them BSL at a staff meeting (they need a bit more practice!).

I have learned so many new skills and met so many lovely people. My confidence has improved so much, and I feel much more independent. My communication skills have improved greatly and now I feel confident working in a hearing environment.

I feel sad to be leaving this wonderful team and I will miss them, but I am so excited to start my new challenge at the Alder Hey Charity Shop in Huyton. Eventually I hope to achieve my goal of full-time employment within the Alder Hey Charity team.

Time for a Pic-NICU?

As the weather warms up and the sun (hopefully!) comes out for Spring /Summer why not hold a Pic-NICU – a picnic to support our Surgical Neonatal Unit Appeal.

The new Neonatal Surgical Unit will help to keep families together in a world class facility during some of their most difficult times.

Whether at school, in the garden, in the park or at work – a picnic is a great way to bring people together to enjoy some

fresh air whilst spending quality time with friends and family.

Hold a raffle, bake and sell cakes, name the teddy (what teddy bear doesn’t like a picnic?), combine with a dress down/ up day, or simply ask guests for a small donation. However and wherever you hold your Pic-NICU it’s about bringing people together to help keep families together.

If you’re interested in holding a Pic-NICU, on any date of your choice, please contact sarah.bennett@ alderheycharity.org for your free resource pack.

THE BIG JUMP!

In partnership with the Owen McVeigh Foundation we held ‘The Big Jump’ skydive day in Lancaster on Saturday 29th April.

50 thrill seeking fundraisers enjoyed the unforgettable feeling of freefalling through the clouds from over 10,000ft at speeds of up to 120mph before spectacularly gliding back down to earth.

One of those brave enough to take part was Alder Hey Young Ambassador Maisie Kinsella.

At the age of three, 17 year old, Maisie was diagnosed with a condition called Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) which meant she needed open heart surgery.

MAISIE EXPLAINED:

8 The Big Jump!
If I hadn't had this surgery, by the time I would have reached 13 years old my heart & lungs would've been severely damaged and my life would be irrecoverably changed.
“ “

To thank Alder Hey, Maisie decided to join us on The Big Jump and jumped from 15,000ft. Despite some initial nerves (particularly from her family!) Maisie loved the skydive and when asked to put it into words said, “Absolutely amazing!’

Places are limited and sold out quickly this year so register now to avoid disappointment.

MADE A DIFFERENCE

OUR WINTER EQUIPMENT APPEAL WAS TO FUND A SPECIALIST INCUBATOR

towards the Neonatal Giraffe Incubator with the help of her grandmother, Audrey. They held a cake sale, raffle and even made handmade knitted cream egg chickens to sell at Thea’s swimming club. Thea was not a patient at Alder Hey but was born prematurely so when Audrey saw the Giraffe Incubator Appeal on our website over Christmas they decided to help fundraise towards it.

There has been an increase in the number of children who need dialysis and we are currently running around 54 sessions per week here at Alder Hey.

Thanks to amazing supporters like Thea and Audrey, we raised £25,000 to buy this vital piece of equipment. Thea raised £600

Our latest equipment appeal is to fund a top of the range haemodialysis machine to enable us to care for more children that need us every day.

As well as increasing our capacity, the new machine will be suitable for young children under 20kg, so it gives us the scope we need to support babies as well as children.

These new machines have a much lower risk of technical errors, meaning that we can often save time, and things are far more likely to run smoothly. It is a huge undertaking for our families to travel to us at Alder Hey several times a week for renal dialysis and we want this vital treatment to be as stress-free and efficient as possible for them.

Alder Hey Children’s Charity goes above and beyond what is available on our hard-working NHS to ensure that hospital life is the best it can be for our children and young people. You can support our work by going to www.alderheycharity.org

How your support has made a difference 11 S
SISTER CLAIRE DOHERTY EXPLAINS,

FUNDRAISING

Each month we select one of our amazing supporters to be our Fundraiser of the Month. Let’s meet some of our recent stars…

OCTOBER

Anna and 7-year-old Benny Waters

Anna’s son Benny, who recently turned seven, is currently treated at Alder Hey.

“Benny is already blowing us away with his bravery and we are determined that he will smile at every opportunity throughout his treatment programme”.

Before Benny’s diagnosis, Anna had signed up to run the Chester Marathon. She said “My initial thought was just to cancel everything and running the marathon no longer featured on my radar; but I decided that rather than putting all that training to waste, I would run it and raise

funds for Alder Hey Charity”

The race organisers allowed Anna to ‘run your own way’ enabling her to run the official distance on her own route and still have it officially acknowledged. Anna explained:

“The thought of running in a large crowd and celebratory atmosphere just didn’t feel right for me. However, I was determined to channel the strength of our amazing boy and get it done for him and all the other children like him getting treatment at Alder Hey now and in the future.”

Anna raised over £8,000. She told us “I honestly don’t know how our family would have got through the last few weeks without Benny’s incredible team at Alder Hey. It really is a special place and we are grateful that Benny’s treatment will be under the care of the team there.”

NOVEMBER

11-year-old Caitlin Robinson

Caitlin, from Leeds, raised a whopping £1,600 smashing the £1,000 target she set herself.

Not only has she raised an incredible total to help our brave young patients, but she raised the money through a sponsored hair cut, donating 17 inches of her long locks to the Little Princess Trust who provide free wigs for children and young people who have lost their own hair.

Caitlin was inspired to fundraise for Alder Hey as her cousin is currently being treated at Alder Hey. Caitlin said:

“I want to raise money for the hospital because my cousin is being treated there. He has leukaemia and they have looked after him really well. I was shocked that I was able to raise so much money! It felt amazing because I’ve never done anything like that before and it’s a really nice feeling knowing that the money is going to such a good cause.”

12 Fundraising heroes

HEROES

10-year-old Milla Hills

Milla made her own fudge and sold it at a stall with all proceeds going to Alder Hey.

“I have been coming to Alder Hey since I was small and I am very grateful for all the help the doctors and nurses have given me. Following an

operation in December 2021 I had wanted to do a sponsored walk to raise money but unfortunately my mobility has not been good enough so along with my sister we decided to do something else.

During lock down my sister started to make fudge and sell it to our neighbours and friends so we decided we wanted to make more fudge to raise money for Alder Hey. The

organisers of the Winter Market in Manchester agreed to let us have a stall at the Christmas fair in December and we spent the whole week before making and packing fudge. We designed how we wanted the stall to look and on the day we sold out, making lots of money for the hospital. Everyone said the fudge was delicious, we had a great time running the stall and we plan to do it again this year.”

4-year-old Lincoln Huyton

Lincoln and his mum wanted to give something back after Lincoln had two open heart surgeries at Alder Hey. They asked his school, Parish C of E in St Helens to get involved during #congenitalheartdefect week and they hosted a Wear Something Red Day and Red Party Day, whist Lincoln’s dad held a collection at work.

“Lincoln has a complex congenital heart defect

and Heterotaxy Syndrome RAI and has been under Alder Hey’s care since day one – without them he wouldn’t be alive today. I can’t thank them enough for what they have done for our son and how well they have looked after him during his numerous stays and appointments. They have given us almost four and a half years with him and hopefully many more.” Mum, Tanya

7-year-old Max Willets

Max set himself a challenge to swim 150 lengths of a 25m pool throughout March.

After his dad promised to donate £1 for every additional length over 150 Max finally managed to swim an extra 50 taking his final tally to 200!

Max raised £410 and mum Nicola said “He completely smashed his target which we thought he’d need help with, he’s surprised us and surpassed expectation. He’s my little superstar.”

drive him to the hospital. Thank you to Amy for getting up at 4.30am to ensure he always looks splendid and to Vicky for chauffeuring him here every year.

The annual jockey’s visit on Ladies’ Day gives children, families and staff the opportunity to meet and quiz sporting legends including Charity patrons AP McCoy and Mick Fitzgerald. It also provides an opportunity to meet one of the most iconic racehorses in Grand National history.

Neptune Collonges won the Grand National in 2012 in his last ever race, in what remains the closest ever finish in the National’s 184-year history.

Now happily retired, Nipper, as he is affectionately known, has been visiting Alder Hey annually during Grand National week for over 10 years and never fails to put a smile on patients’ faces. His child friendly, placid nature and appetite for polo mints ensures a special visit every year.

Known throughout the racing world for his love of rolling around in the mud, his annual visit is only made possible by the generosity of his owners John and Pat Hales and the dedication of those who get up at the crack of dawn to lovingly groom and

The 22-year-old grey has also raised thousands of pounds for Alder Hey since his retirement through regular public appearance fees kindly donated to the Charity by the Hales family. A true champion.

Thank you to the Jockey Club for supporting Alder Hey, where we care for children like baby Frankie, this year’s Grand National 41st runner.

CARTER-JAY’S STORY

Carter-Jay was diagnosed with gastroschisis before his birth in March 2023 at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. His parents had been seen by the surgeon and neonatologist, so they knew what to expect after he was born. He required an immediate transfer to Alder Hey for specialist surgery.

Gastroschisis is a rare condition which affects roughly 1 in 3,000 babies each year. This meant CarterJay was born with his bowels on the outside of his tummy, and surgery was needed to put them back.

Carter-Jay was unable to have the operation at Liverpool Women’s Hospital as operations like these can only be done in a specialised children’s hospital with full paediatric surgery facilities such as Alder Hey.

Within 3 hours of his birth, he was transferred from Liverpool Women’s Hospital to Alder Hey where surgeons were waiting to take Carter-Jay to theatre. The operation was successful, but following an infection a couple of weeks later, he had to go back into surgery. He has now been discharged from Alder Hey and is recovering in the comfort of his own home.

Carter-Jay and his family are now looking forward to booking their first holiday together, which they are planning for September.

Dad Karl said:

“Alder Hey were amazing from start to finish. All the staff on the neonatal unit are amazing. They were so great to us and always went out of their way to give us the time of day and see how we were doing. We can’t wait to show our little fighter to the world.

“We are also so happy to have our boy as an inspiration to other mums and dads going through what he’s going through, and happy to show them that these little babies are fighters!

16 Carter-Jay’s Story
“ “

Speaking about the new Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit being built at Alder Hey, Karl explained that facilities such as family rooms would have enhanced their experience while Carter-Jay was in the hospital. He said: “We missed him so much at night, and a lot of times we had sleepless nights worrying about him.

The new building can also help set you up for life at home, getting used to all living together and caring for your little one.”

Mum Sophie said: “Thank you to all the nurses on the neonatal unit for their close comfort and help throughout this tough time.”

RUNNING THE WORLD

Our Alder Hey runners have been out in force recently, from Liverpool to Rome via Paris and a host of towns and cities in between.

Oli joined a record number of Alder Hey runners for the Liverpool Half Marathon in March and he became the fastest Oliphant in history to complete the London Marathon in April!

LOUVRE IN PARIS

Ryan Donald completed the Paris Marathon in a very respectable 3 hours and 43 minutes – only to be topped by his marriage proposal under the Arc de Triomphe at the finish line, Congratulations Ryan and Amanda!

RUN WITH US!

There’s plenty of time to enter (and train for!) a wide range of running events this year.

We have free places* in most running events throughout the UK. Here are a few:

RUNNING FOR ROHAN

Rebecca Faridani completed the Rome Marathon in March in memory of her stepson Rohan and raised over £2500.

“Sadly, Rohan my stepson passed away at the tender age of 10 in 2014, 18 months after being diagnosed with a devastating mitochondrial disorder called MELAS. This cruel and untreatable genetic condition took away so much from Rohan, sight, speech, mobility, all in a

very short time after diagnosis. Yet, with all these devastating changes, he never once complained, and battled through each cruel challenge that was thrown at him.

Alder Hey played a critical role in Rohan’s battle with MELAS. Their quick responses to his medical condition helped to prolong his life by a year, and we will always be grateful for their amazing care and expertise.”

EVENT SPONSORS

Our friends at Applied Nutrition are huge supporters of Alder Hey as several staff members have children who have been treated at the hospital. They are the main sponsor this year of both our Snowdon at Night event and the Coniston Challenge.

In 2022 CEO Steven Granite’s 11 year old son

George was taken seriously ill on holiday in Mexico with a rare infection of the brain. It resulted in him being air ambulanced home in a coma from Mexico, via Canada to Alder Hey. He spent a total of 7 weeks in an induced coma and several months in hospital.

Steven explained, "Whilst his recovery is still ongoing, I’m very happy that he’s well on the road to recovery and eternally grateful for the amazing help of nurses and doctors at Alder Hey. They are still supporting him in his recovery a year later.

I could never repay them for what they did to help George, but will always want to try and give back. I was delighted when my partners at Applied Nutrition chose to be the main sponsor of two events for Alder Hey and that so many of our staff are getting involved in raising money for both the ‘Snowdon by Night’ event in April and ‘Coniston Challenge’ in July. We aim to raise as much as possible for an unbelievable hospital."

TO OLD TRAFFORD From ALDER HEY

He was joined on his epic journey by friends and family including Zak, his football team, and former Manchester United midfielder Sammy McIlroy.

Harvey arrived at Old Trafford on the afternoon of 2nd April after walking for a total of 16 hours and was cheered over the finish line by hundreds of supporters.

“The support and encouragement he’s had over the last two days has been amazing,” said Naomi

During the first weekend in April, sevenyear-old Harvey Goodman undertook a mammoth challenge to walk 40 miles from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to Old Trafford Football Stadium.

The inspiration behind Harvey’s challenge was his eight-year-old cousin, and best friend, Zak, who has recently undergone gruelling chemotherapy treatment at Alder Hey having being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Mum Naomi explained, “He saw the excellent care his cousin received while being looked after by doctors and nursing staff, and was especially impressed to find out that the ward Zak was on had a chef on hand and unlimited use of an Xbox!”

Harvey originally set himself a target to raise £10,000 but it soon became apparent that he would smash this. Incredibly, to date he has raised over £27,000.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to his JustGiving page. He’s raised such a lot of money, which will help so many children and their families.”

A brilliant effort Harvey – we can’t wait to see what’s next!

If you’ve been inspired by Harvey’s walking exploits and fancy embarking on an epic walking challenge of your own, why not join our National 3 Peaks Challenge in August or Snowdon by Night in 2024?
