6.- ANIMALS AND PEOPLE 1.- Benefits we obtain from animals Animals are very important for people for many reasons:  Food. Animals give us meat, milk, eggs, honey, fish…  Clothing. We get wool, leather, silk… from animals.  Transport. Horses, oxen, donkeys, elephants, camels…are used for transporting people and goods.  Companionship: We use dogs, cats, hamsters…as pets.  Protection (dogs used to guard cattle)  Leisure time visiting zoos or nature, hunting, fishing… 2.- Livestock farming Livestock farming means animal farming. There are two types - Extensive farming. Animals live in the open and eat grass from the fiels or grain. (Cattle, goats, sheep…) - Intensive farming. Animals live fenced ad farmers give them food. (Cattle, sheep, poultry…)

Types of livestock are:  Cattle. We get milk, meat or leather from cows.  Sheep. Farmers get milk, meat or wool.  Pigs to get meat.  Goats. Farmers get milk, meat or wool.  Poultry. Farmers get meat and eggs from chickens.  Beekeping to get honey and wax from bees.  Pisciculture and aquaculture to get food from fish, molluscs and crustaceans. 3.- Observing and classifying animals Zoologists, vets or farmers use different ways to observe and classify animals. Birdwatching. Birdwatchers collect information about birds to protect them. They use binoculars and telescopes to obserb them closely. To identify different types of animals we use field guides that usually include:  Texts with the name, classification, description, size, food…

 Distribution maps to show where the animal lives.  Drawings and photos to recognize the animals. Some field guides include videos. Keys are useful to identify animals. We have to check the paired statements and follow the instructions.
