h l’amour… that illness and scientifically proven state which blurs the mind and renders one temporarily insane- Until reality sets in and sorrow and love, the inseparable couple bound only by heartache, unfolds before your eyes. Desamor or falling out of love: that dark world many equate to death itself. I am not quite sure I understand the meaning of true love without commitment, and when the feeling of affection matures, there is an intrinsic disillusionment, a sort of aversion to love itself. This is perhaps the hardest step one must ascend and, to climb it one must learn to withstand great disenchantment, while accepting with utter resignation. I am not one to resign myself to anything, not once. I don’t like half measures and routine seems full of gray areas. I have tried it trying to fit it, to then choke up until I feel asphyxiated. Heartbreak can be like a sudden and unwanted blow of freedom. It numbs you or drives you to hold on. Either you die or you run and run until you get hooked on the next illusion. You see your life repeating itself as in a scene one must reenact again and again with different characters- or the same. Love becomes a broken old clock that clings to a pendulum of extreme emotions: swinging from endless love to never-ending sorrow. It was precisely from that swinging back and forth that I decided to break free one day. I resisted, boy, did I ever... Until, with bloody hands, I let go. I fell into what seemed like and endless abyss, until I hit rock bottom; until I decided to wipe off my tears. Then, in the foggy mist of broken illusions, you appeared. It was then that I understood the meaning of Soul Mates.

The love of my live is both strange and beautiful…He is a thorn less cactus from which the most beautiful flowers bloom. His soul lives in the desert, where I suspect poets and mystics roam free. He lives bare. Like me, my beloved’s heart does not know of routines or jealousy... If I cry, he cries beside me. When I laugh, he bursts with me. He disguises himself within landscapes and speaks languages I don’t understand; he appears in feelings and sensations I’ve never felt but will soon discover. I never have to break free because he doesn’t fence me in. Our home, with no ceilings or walls, never overwhelms me. From it, I can gaze into the horizon and find those who are looking for the warmth of my embrace. At this point, being as unbearably faithful as I am, I run to hide in the arms of my beloved. Because the love of my life has all at once many faces and none at all. Together we can reach ecstasy simply by staring at a rose, experiencing a fleeting instant of absolute beauty as if were eternal. We are awakened by the holiness of the vast desert which blankets us, in that barren piece of paradise where the only way out is to go forward through its indescribable star studded skies. We never learned how to fly, for we live amongst the clouds, shrouded in the mist of adventure, where every dream is yet possible. Still, often doubtful and wanting to confirm our sanity, we venture to land on our feet. We mingle with devoted couples with lonely souls clinging to their story. They gaze at each other while you, passionate and full of life, walk around unnoticed to their eyes. Thus, when I get the inevitable question “How is your love life these days?” I blissfully reply: “I am alone and happy.” Some take pity on me, most don’t believe me, and still others envy me. But you, my faithful companion, my accomplice, my soul mate… You hide behind them and wink and its enough to crumble that foolish grin that you, my FREEDOM, only knows so well.

e met up with Latin American fashion designer Roberto de Villacis at Urth Caffé in West Hollywood, so that he could tell us a little about his story, his work, and his future projects. As soon as we sat down to begin our interview, I noticed just how approachable and straightforward this great designer really is. Roberto was wearing a silver necklace that immediately caught my attention; it was incredible. I asked him about it, and he explained to me with great pride that it was part of his contribution as Design Ambassador for Novica, an association that, together with National Geographic, is in charge of supporting and moving forward the work of craftsman throughout the world. He has previously worked with such celebrities and fashion designers as Tom Ford and Karl Lagerfeld, who have used his designs. Roberto’s affinity for fashion was instilled in him at a young age. His grandma, an enthusiast of fashion, would always say, “A dress a day keeps the doctor away.” And she practiced this mantra by making a new dress for herself every single day. Roberto learned to sew when he was 5 years old. He would make clothing for all of his dolls, which were his first “clients.”

The career of de Villacis took off after his first collection was photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. He was only 24 at the time. From that moment on, his life would never be the same. In the mid1990’s, Roberto joined the group Missoni for the relaunch of the brand. His first collection, inspired by space, was a total success. “Many of my designs come as a channeling, as if a spirit told me what to design,” Roberto shared with us about his process for creating his exclusive pieces. However, Roberto’s projects do not only focus on fashion; he is a jack of all trades. He forms part of an art collective called “United Aliens,” together with the Chapman brothers and the Top Model,

Verushka. This collective focuses on art and fashion. One of the collective’s (many) projects was a fictitious advertising campaign that was published in all the fashion magazines. The goal of the so-called campaign was to offer the client a visual consumption; that is, they were offered a luxury product without having to pay for it. The products were equally fictitious: an anti-fear spray and an antiviral perfume. The collective recently worked with Sofía Vergara on a documentary entitled, “Dream Without Borders,” in which they give away trips to Disney World to underprivileged children. And of course, his artistic abilities don’t stop there. Roberto’s collection of sculptures, “L’art de la Table,” can be found in a permanent showcase at the Museum of Decorative Arts at the Louvre. After 25 years outside of the US, Roberto returned in order to fulfill his wish of winning an Oscar. He is currently working on a secret project that is keeping him very busy and moving him ever closer to that goal. Roberto’s projects do not only focus on the world of fashion. I assure you that this hairstyle does not require much effort and is ideal for day or night.

Divide the hair into sections that are not very thick and curl them with a 1’’ or 1 ½’’ barrel. My suggestion is to wrap the hair around the barrel for just a few seconds; that way the wave will be much softer and more natural. Inspired by the 60’s but with a cool modern winged shape this graphic black and white look is a way of using an unexpected color in a classic application. SHIMMER Shimmery cheeks and eyes are a perfect way to achieve a dazzling day to night makeup look! I used a slightly iridescent tan eyeshadow all over the lid and then used a gold shimmering powder on the brow bone and on top of the cheekbones. The holidays are here, and with that come all of the parties and events of the season! Dressing up your makeup for the holidays can be fun and exciting. This is the best time to try new eye shadow colors, glitter and bold lips, depending on your personality. Here are some of my favorite looks for you to choose from:

GLITZ AND GLAM: For the daring and adventurous woman that wants to stand out. To create this look, you can use dark colors, glitter, and metallic accents on the eyes. Red or wine lip colors tie beautifully into the dark eye makeup for an evening out, creating a sultry and seductive look to go with that perfect little black dress.

BRILLO Y GLAMOUR: Para la mujer atrevida y aventurera que quiere llamar la atención. Para crear este look, puedes usar colores oscuros, cosméticos con brillo y acentos metálicos en los ojos. Never match your eye makeup to your dress. This is a big NONO! Always use a color that will complement the color of your dress by choosing from the opposite color family. For example: red goes well with green, blue goes well with orange, and purple goes well with yellow. A blue dress will be complemented by brown eye shadows, gold highlights, and red or orange lips. A red dress pairs up nicely with the classic winged liner and red lip makeup look. A purple dress can be worn with a sultry smokey eye and nude lips. Use a shimmery highlighter at the top of your cheekbones to create a glow. The best way to use metallic shadows is to apply them only in the inner corner of your eyes to mimic the look of being well rested and bright eyed. You can always false eyelashes to add drama to any makeup look you choose.

Nick Van de Wall was born and raised in the Rotterdam suburb of Spijkenisse, Netherlands where at the age of 7 he produced his first music when he discovered software. Now at the age of 26 the talented producer has been nominated multiple times for Grammy Music Awards for his production for other artists such as Chris Brown, Pitbull and Beyonce. But Nick is not only a popular producer, he is also a disc jockey known worldwide. As of today, he is ranked number 7 in DJ Mag’s top 100 djs. By touring all over the world, Afrojack has definitely made a name in the electronic music industry. So I don’t know about my readers, but I’m definitely curious to know a little more about him and his thoughts about his fast rising career. Therefore, I asked Nick what brings him happiness as a DJ. hat is happiness? That is a very subjective question we ask ourselves each day. While for some people happiness may be abundance, for others it could be love and for others success. But for the girls of Radio Elei it is a mathematical formula that is a bit complex: (Love x music² + Fashion X(Family) ³)= ALEGRIA. Natalia and Isabel Espinoza explain to us their formula for happiness and how they deal with their everyday lives and their rock star lives. After their appearances on Telehit, Univision and Mundo Fox the band is getting more and more popular within the Indie genre. Let’s try to solve the first part of their equation. However, love is not easy to solve with these girls, but after a few drinks we managed to successfully come to a conclusion: “We have each other mutually and it’s been hard doing everything at the same time as sisters,” the girls tell us. Balancing music with their normal lives is hard, but the love they have towards the band and each other makes everything easier. The 2nd part of the equation is music. Isabel and Natalia started singing in middle school at their school chapel and ever since it’s been a passion. “Music is a profession and the same time is something very intimate”, says Natalia. “It’s a full time job but at the same time it is something personal” adds Isabel. The passion that these girls feel when performing is unexplainable and like every talented artist, the girls along with the rest of the band have goals for this rest of the year: “We want to play in every possible venue and finish our record.” Radio Elei’s charm on stage is their alternative fashion which they manage to execute to perfection. However, these ladies didn’t always dress as they do now. “We are very hard working girls from a small town; all the glamour that we have now, we have worked very hard to get.” Finally, for Radio Elei family is extremely important, especially during the holidays. “We have a big family dinner, and everyone says a few words” the girls explain. Without a doubt this band is headed towards success and along that path, they do everything possible to keep ALEGRIA in their lives.

ué es la felicidad? Una pregunta tan subjetiva que nos hacemos día a día. Mientras la felicidad para unos es abundancia, para otros puede ser amor y para algunos puede ser el éxito. Pero para las chicas del grupo de rock Radio Elei, es una fórmula matemática un poco simple: (amor x música² + moda (familia)³) = ALEGRÍA Natalia e Isabel Espinoza nos explican su ecuación para la alegría y como lidian con sus vidas normales a sus vidas de estrellas de Rock. Después de haber estado en Telehit, Univisión y Mundofox, la banda se da a conocer cada día más entre el género Indie. Resolvamos su ecuación con la primera parte que es el amor, la cual no fue fácil resolver con estas dos chicas Chilenas, mas sin embargo, después de haber invitado un trago, logramos exitosamente solucionar esta parte de la formula. “Nos tenemos mutuamente y como hermanas ha sido difícil hacer todo al mismo tiempo,” nos dicen Natalia e Isa. El balancear la música con sus vidas normales es difícil pero el amor que le tienen a la banda y el que se tienen mutuamente lo hace todo más fácil. La 2da parte de la operación matemática es la música. Isa y Natalia comenzaron a cantar en el colegio, en la capilla del Colegio al que asistían, y desde entonces la música ha sido una pasión. “La música es una profesión y al mismo tiempo algo íntimo,” dice Natalia. “Es un trabajo de tiempo completo pero también es algo personal,” añade Isa. La pasión que sienten estas chicas al tocar y al expresarse es inexplicable, y como cualquier artista talentoso las chicas junto con el resto de la banda tienen sus metas para este fin de año: “Queremos tocar en todos los lugares posibles este año y terminar nuestro cd,” nos comentan. Para Radio Elei, una parte de su encanto en el escenario es su moda alternativa que logran realizar a perfección. Sin embargo estas muchachas no siempre vestían como lo hacen ahora; “Nosotras somos de pueblo trabajadoras. Todo el glamour que tenemos ahorita no lo hemos ganado.” Finalmente, la familia para Radio Elei es muy importante, especialmente en las festividades. “Hacemos una cena familiar muy grande y todos decimos algunas palabras,” nos cuentan las chicas. No cabe duda que esta banda va al estrellato y en proceso, hace todo lo posible para mantener ALEGRÍA en sus vidas.

One of today’s most popular music genres is electronic dance music. However there are many sub genres within this music, such as progressive, dub step, future funk and many others. I have recently come across a new one (at least to me): “Urban Electronic.” It is a fusion of electronic and Latin music such as Bachata, Merengue and Reggae. Allow me to introduce you to the person that made that happen: Socio Angel. Jose Angel, better known as Socioo, was born in Venezuela, and was introduced to the music industry as a child while attending a concert. “I went to see the Rolling Stones, and ever since, all I wanted to do is music”, says Socioo. It has been quite a journey for this artist; starting from absolute zero isn’t always easy. “I remember I needed money once; I literally took my cds and started selling them in the street. There was a lady that said she would buy them on one condition, that is if I gave her a kiss, and so…. I did!” says the young artist as he laughs. Today, Socio is found on popular music sites such as Sound Cloud, Spotify,iTunes and has been interviewed by Rolling Stone Online and MTV.

Sin embargo, hay muchos subgéneros dentro de esta música, como el progresivo, el dub step, el future funk y muchos otros. Recientemente me encontré uno nuevo (al menos para mí): el “Electrónico Urbano”. Es una fusión de música electrónica y ritmos latinos como bachata, merengue y reggae. Permítanme presentarles a la persona que hizo que esto sucediera: Socioo Angel. Jose Angel, mejor conocido como Socioo, nació en Venezuela, y tuvo su primer acercamiento a la industria de la música cuando era niño y asistió a un concierto. “Fui a ver a los Rolling Stones y, desde entonces, lo único que he querido es hacer música”, dice Socioo. Este artista ha recorrido un gran camino; empezar absolutamente desde cero no siempre es fácil. Needless to say this young star is definitely on the rise. “Recuerdo que una vez necesitaba dinero; literalmente tomé mis CDs y los empecé a vender en la calle. I wanted to bring all those vibes and energies to my music, so that everyone could relate to it.” Without a doubt every effort has its prize: Socio is the only Latin Music artist to be nominated at the Los Angeles Film Festival for best music video. Needless to say this young star is definitely on the rise. To conclude our small encounter, the beautiful artist shared with us what is ALEGRIA to him: “Making people happy with my music makes me happy, because I have worked very hard to acquire that”. And as a fan I guarantee to the readers his music is truly ALEGRIA.

Sobra decir que este joven estrella definitivamente está en ascenso.

Para concluir nuestro breve encuentro, el hermoso artista nos compartió lo que la ALEGRÍA es para él: “Alegrar a la gente con mi música me trae alegría, pues me he esforzado mucho por adquirir esa habilidad.” Y como admiradora, les garantizo a los lectores que su música realmente es ALEGRÍA.

THOSE FIRST AMERICAN TOURS WERE VERY SPECIAL AND NOW WE DON’T ONLY SEE OUR PEOPLE BUT ALSO THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN 20 YEARS LATER... IT’S VERY INTENSE, VERY INTENSE, BUT VERY EXCITING.”

It was an exciting night for Carlos Vives and for all those who have seen the artist’s commitment to his culture and his people over several decades, always reflecting his light and his talent from deep inside. The magic of his music has had a monumental impact throughout the world. I had the chance to interview him during the official Latin Grammy party after he wiped out the competition by winning awards in three categories: Song of the Year and Best Tropical Song for “Volví a Nacer”, and Best Tropical Fusion Album for Corazón Profundo. While chatting with Vives, I realized that the human being undoubtedly surpasses the artist, or rather it’s like they both walk side by side, on a very human path. With a warm embrace and tears in his eyes, he told me: “It has been a very exciting night. I see the dream is coming true, the dream of seeing Colombia be a leader tonight at the Latin Grammys thanks to new talents such as Fonseca, I saw Juanes, I saw nominations for Santiago Cruz, Mojito, Bomba Stereo… I have fought for the industry to see everything that Colombia offers, not just today, but also before we came along. This fills me with joy; I was very happy to see all of them were nominated, and winning today leaves me speechless: a very exciting comeback.” There’s something else that fills Vives with ALEGRIA, and he told me about it. “Knowing that my children are watching me win these awards … that’s ALEGRIA to me.” Afterwards, the Colombian artist answered a few questions about his career as well as some more personal ones. 1. What’s next, careerwise… any new projects on the way? I will continue to tour with Corazón Profundo. I’m preparing a new album to be released on April 22nd, 2014, titled “Más Corazón Profundo”, and I’ll be quite connected to the soccer world cup in Brazil. 2. As a human being and an artist, how have you grown during this new phase in your career, after several time periods when you’ve been away from the stage? We grow every day. Although we have spent some time apart from the more conventional industry, we have never been away from the stage. 3. In your opinion, how can music connect and transform humanity? It’s a universal language we all know and trust. Good songs, of course, help improve things. 4. Are you a spirtitual being? Spirituality is something that’s a part of everybody’s nature. I try to be one. 5. How will you celebrate the Christmas season and the end of 2013, do you follow any special traditions? It’s time to go back home, to be with the family and to practice all sorts of Chrismas traditions, be they religious, gastronomic, musical, etc., like I mention in my most recent song, “No te Pongas Triste”, a Christmas “vallenato” with all the spirit of the season.

“Hoy en día, nuestro público es muy extenso, pero yo no puedo olvidar que fueron los colombianos los que se llevaron nuestros discos fuera de nuestro país. Son quienes nos han apoyado siempre. Esas primeras giras en los Estados Unidos fueron muy especiales y ahora no sólo vemos a nuestra gente, sino que va ahora con hijos, nietos… 20 años después… es muy fuerte, muy fuerte pero muy emocionante.” Fue una noche de emociones para Carlos Vives y para todos aquellos que lo han visto ser un artista comprometido con su cultura y con su gente por varias décadas, siempre reflejando su talento y su luz desde lo más profundo. La magia de su música ha tenido un impacto monumental en el mundo entero. Tuve la oportunidad de entrevistarlo en la fiesta oficial del Grammy Latino después de que arrasó con los premios en tres categorias: Cancion del Año y Mejor Cancion Tropical con “Volví A Nacer”, y Mejor Álbum de Fusión Tropical por Corazón Profundo. Al conversar con Vives, sólo logré darme cuenta que el ser humano supera sin duda al artista o, mejor dicho, ambos caminan de la mano en un andar muy humano. Con un abrazo cálido y con lágrimas en los ojos, me dijo: “Ha sido una noche muy emocionante. Veo cómo se va haciendo realidad el sueño de ver cómo Colombia fue líder esta noche en el Grammy Latino con nuevos talentos como Fonseca, vi a Juanes, vi las nominaciones para Santiago Cruz, Mojito, Bomba Stereo… Yo he sido un luchador para que la industria viera todo lo que hay en Colombia, no solamente hoy, sino también antes de nosotros. Esto me llena de alegría, me dio mucha felicidad verlos nominados a todos ellos y ganar hoy me deja sin palabras: un regreso muy emocionante.” Hay algo más que a Vives le brinda ALEGRÍA, y platicó al respecto. “Saber que mis hijos hoy me están viendo ganarme estos premios … eso para mí es ALEGRÍA.” Posteriormente, el artista colombiano respondió algunas preguntas sobre su carrera y otras más personales. 1. Ahora qué sigue para tu carrera… ¿vienen algunos nuevos proyectos en camino? Seguiré de gira con Corazón Profundo Tour. Estoy preparando un nuevo álbum que saldrá el 22 de abril de 2014 que se llama “Más Corazón Profundo”, y estaré muy conectado con el mundial de futbol en Brasil. 2. Como ser humano y artista, ¿de qué manera has crecido en esta nueva etapa de tu carrera, tras lapsos en que has estado alejado de los escenarios? Crecemos todos los días. Aunque hayamos estado algún tiempo fuera de la industria de una manera más convencional, nunca nos hemos alejado de los escenarios. 3. En tu opinión, ¿cómo puede la música conectar a la humanidad y transformarla? Es un idioma universal que todos conocemos y que nos produce confianza. Las buenas canciones, por supuesto, ayudan a mejorar las cosas. 4. ¿Eres un ser espiritual? Lo espiritual es algo que forma parte de la naturaleza de todos. Procuro serlo. 5. ¿Cómo celebraras las fiestas navideñas y el fin de este 2013, tienes algunas tradiciones especiales? Es tiempo de regresar a casa, de estar en familia y de poner en práctica todas las tradiciones navideñas, religiosas, gastronómicas, musicales, etc., como lo digo en mi canción más reciente, “No te pongas triste” un vallenato navideño con todo el sentimiento de la época.

1. What can you tell us about this experience and what did it teach you?

Miss Venezuela for me was a great school. I participated when I was only 17, and that open a world of opportunities. In Venezuela, the preparation for the contest is different from what is done in other countries. First of all, it is one of the most anticipated events of the year, since every region wants to have a beauty queen and they support her from the time she is elected in the local contest (that is usually held in an open public space), until the final night of the Miss Venezuela. Then, there is a 4 months of intensive preparation before someone gets the crown. There is a full team in different disciplines that will polish the abilities of the candidates, from personal trainers to acting. Thus, people think that just being the most beautiful girl in a room of 28 candidates will make you the queen, but definitely more than just beauty is required to be noticed. All the girls are invited to events where they have the opportunity to meet members of communities in need, as well as the media. Many business people and other personalities are involved as well, so it is up to each girl to just introduce themselves or develop a deeper connection. In my case, I did my

In order to achieve that, staying up to date with what is going on in the world, reading, and talking to people who have access to detailed information in different aspects will enrich your point of view, as well as your language. Also, knowing the audience that you cater to will help you understand what they what to hear or see, and how you want to present yourself to them to establish a connection. I recommend as well to find a good mentor. Sometimes you try hard specially when fierce competition is around the corner, but we can be either too hard on ourselves or too soft, and any of those positions will help you improve. Someone from the outside, that likes your work, and have some insight in what you can do, will be a good point to start. Finally, have fun! Stress is always present in this kind of job, but after all, you are there and only if you find yourself loving what you are doing, those little aspects to improve will vanish under a confident and fun TV host. 4. Tell us about your participation in the Metropolitan Fashion Event that took place in Pasadena this fall where you were a host? Metropolitan Fashion Week is an event that has been held successfully in Seat-

tle for the last four years. I got involved since I heard from Eduardo Khawam, Producer and Director that he was interested in bringing it to Los Angeles. The show is held in dramatic, non-traditional venues and showcases top costume designers. Of course, I took him to the Pasadena City Hall, just a few blocks away from my home and he though it was the perfect venue. It was a surprise for me that Eduardo wanted me to be a host in the event but I was very honored. There is nothing better than working for something you embrace and support, plus I love fashion! Also, I was motivated to see that the show provides a platform for designers to present their collections and creative work to regional and international media.

It was very exciting to introduce these amazing pieces of art to my community in the stunning Pasadena City Hall. I had the opportunity to interview celebrities and local personalities like the Mayor of Pasadena Bill Bogaard and Glee Actrees Becca Tobin, supporting at the same time two powerful Non-profit Organizations: Pasadena Humane Society and Alex’s Lemonade Stand for Cancer Research. As english is my second language, I felt a little nervous about my accent, but actually, this event helped me discover that it is part of your identity, and some people find it sexy! 5. How has your bilingual and multicultural heritage influenced your work? I think that being bilingual and having a multicultural background has open my eyes to different points of view, and it has helped me to get closer to people and talk to them with a deeper understanding of their position. I love to encourage Latinos to teach Spanish to their kids, and not only to a simple conversational level, but being able to read and fall in love with beautiful stories that will actually reinforce their bonds with parents and abuelitos, that in so many cases suffer the pain of being separated from their grandchildren by language barriers. We live in a new era where technology has taken over people in the work place, but there is something that until now machines are not able to replicate, and is reasoning and feeling based on life experience, make music that make us cry and smile, and that would guarantee at least for a good amount of time that we will be necessary and more valuable. Also, language is a vehicle for culture interchange and enrichment, so as I have enjoyed a good cup of tea with a british friend and understood why now days this tradition still remains, and I have also laugh after a joke in spanish. For all that, I will continue to make others embrace their “Cultura”.

6. As an entrepreneur with Amara’s Chocolate & Coffee in Pasadena, how you do balance your artistic and business life?

My business is such a blessing, since it is the perfect space to bound with the community and of course, meet amazing people that I wouldn’t know in another way. However, to commit to the quality of service that me and my team strive to offer, it demands a lot of planing and effort, so I do my best to manage time efficiently. Of course, I always have different responsibilities in front of the camera, so I still take time to prepare myself and it is a rewarding and refreshing experience. When you are a performer, a part of you will always push forward to keep participating in exciting new projects. I also keep building my brand by incorporating different things that I do as an artist to my business. People love as well that my cafe has become a place where many renowned Latino musicians, performers, athletes and producers find a relaxed and warm atmosphere to talk and have fun, so everything stays in perfect tuning. 7. What brings you ALEGRIA? Alegria comes when I help someone in someway and you see them pursuing their dreams. That is one of my strongest mottos, that the Latino community have to stay together and help each other to succeed. There is always something we can do for others, even a good inspiring conversation in the right moment can help people enormously. 8. What keeps inspiring you to pursue your dreams? Inspiration for me is everywhere. I look back and see all the people that believed in me when I just had a dream and that keeps me trusting that there is more I can offer in my professional and personal life. I also find my mom as a true inspiration of strength and commitment since without her efforts I wouldn’t be where I am. My mother as the head of family all by herself with two girls, always did her best to give me and my sister education and strong values. I always like to see people who worked really hard to be where they are and their passion and professionalism drove them to success. People like Jaime Bayly, Don Francisco, Larry King, David Letterman and Leonardo Padron are also top people in the entertainment business that I like to use as a resource to improve as well.

Hay un equipo completo de expertos en distintas disciplinas, desde entrenadores personales hasta instructores de actuación, que pulen las habilidades de las candidatas. Entonces, la gente piensa que sólo ser la chica más bella en una sala con 28 candidatas te convertirá en la reina, pero definitivamente se requiere más que sólo belleza para llamar la atención. Todas las chicas son invitadas a eventos donde tienen la oportunidad de conocer a miembros de comunidades marginadas, así como a los medios. También están involucradas muchas personas de negocios y otras personalidades, así que depende de cada chica si va a limitarse a presentarse o si va a desarrollar una conexión más profunda. En mi caso, hice mi mejor esfuerzo por incorporar esas habilidades en mi vida diaria y aprovechar cada oportunidad que surgiera, pero en general aprendí que ser persistente y nunca rendirse son la clave para obtener resultados favorables. 2. Como presentadora de televisión y figura de los medios muy conocida en Venezuela que ahora está conquistando Hollywood, ¿qué les puedes decir a las chicas jóvenes que están tratando de adentrarse en una carrera similar a la tuya? Creo que hacer carrera en los medios requiere muchas habilidades además de saber hablar ante la cámara o lucir bonita. Pienso que de hecho necesitas ser muy experimentada en distintos aspectos para sobresalir. Todo comienza con una fuerte base de tus propios valores y creencias, pues sería difícil comunicar un mensaje sin tener sentimientos o conocimientos relacionados con el tema. Para lograr eso, mantenerse al corriente respecto a lo que sucede en el mundo, leer y hablar con personas que tengan acceso a información detallada sobre diferentes aspectos enriquecerá tus puntos de vista, así como tu lenguaje. Además, conocer al público al que te diriges te ayudará a

entender lo que desea escuchar o ver, y a saber cómo presentarte ante él para establecer una conexión. También recomiendo encontrar un buen mentor. A veces te esfuerzas mucho, especialmente cuando la competencia feroz está a la vuelta de la esquina, pero podemos ser o demasiado duras con nosotras mismas o demasiado suaves, y ninguna de esas posturas te ayudará a mejorar. Alguien de fuera, a quien le agrade tu trabajo y tenga algo de intuición en relación a lo que puedes hacer, será un buen punto de partida. Por último, ¡diviértete! El estrés siempre está presente en este tipo de trabajo pero, después de todo, estás ahí, y sólo si descubres que amas lo que haces, verás que esos pequeños aspectos que hay que mejorar desaparecerán y surgirá una presentadora de televisión segura de sí misma y divertida. 4. Cuéntanos acerca de tu participación en el evento de Metropolitan Fashion que se celebró en Pasadena este otoño, donde fuiste presentadora. La Metropolitan Fashion Week es un evento que se ha realizado exitosamente en Seattle durante los últimos cuatro años. Me involucré desde que Eduardo Khawam, productor y director, señaló que le interesaba traerlo a Los Ángeles. El espectáculo se lleva a cabo en foros espectaculares, no tradicionales, y presenta a los principales diseñadores de vestuario.

Creo que ser bilingüe y tener vivencias multiculturales me ha abierto los ojos ante distintos puntos de vista y me ha ayudado a acercarme a las personas y hablar con ellas con un entendimiento más profundo de su postura. Me encanta animar a los latinos a enseñarles español a sus niños, y no sólo a un nivel sencillo de conversación, sino para que puedan leer y enamorarse de las historias hermosas que de hecho reforzarán sus lazos con sus padres y abuelitos, quienes en muchos casos sufren el dolor de estar separados de sus nietos debido a barreras del lenguaje.

Desde luego, lo llevé al Ayuntamiento de Pasadena, que queda a sólo unas cuadras de mi hogar y le pareció que era el foro perfecto. Me sorprendió que Eduardo quisiera que yo fuera una presentadora en el evento pero fue un gran honor. ¡No hay nada mejor que trabajar en algo que acoges y apoyas, además de que me encanta la moda! También estaba motivada al ver que el espectáculo proporcionaba una plataforma para que los diseñadores presentaran sus colecciones y su trabajo creativo ante medios regionales e internacionales. Fue muy interesante presentar estas asombrosas piezas de arte ante mi comunidad en el deslumbrante Ayuntamiento de Pasadena. Tuve oportunidad de entrevistar celebridades y figuras locales, como a Bill Bogaard, el AIcalde de Pasadena, y a Becca Tobin, actriz de Glee. Al mismo tiempo, se brindó apoyo

Además, el lenguaje es un vehículo para el intercambio cultural y el enriquecimiento, de modo que así como disfruté de una buena taza de té con una amiga británica y comprendí por qué es que esta tradición permanece hasta la fecha, también me río tras escuchar un chiste en español. Por todo eso, seguiré tratando de hacer que otros acepten su cultura. 6. Como empresaria con Amara’s Chocolate & Coffee en Pasadena, ¿cómo equilibras tu vida artística y tu vida de negocios?

A la gente también le encanta que mi café se haya convertido en un lugar donde muchos músicos, artistas, atletas y productores latinos conocidos encuentren una atmósfera relajada y cálida para platicar y divertirse, de modo que todo se mantiene en sintonía. 7. ¿Qué te trae ALEGRÍA? La alegría llega cuando ayudo a alguien en alguna forma y lo veo persiguiendo sus sueños. Welcome to the New Year. It’s time to lose that weight, eat healthier or reach other goals you may have set for 2014 (no worries if one or two of them rolled over from last year’s resolutions.) You’re not the only one trying to take something off ... a couple pounds, some grey hairs, a few wrinkles. New Year’s resolutions are an American hobby of selfi mprovement. However, of the 40% of Americans who make them, only about 8% actually achieve them. The first mistake many make is setting unrealistic goals. Studies have shown that a new habit can take anywhere from 21 to 90 days to stick. Dr. Michael K. Obeng, FACS, board certified plastic surgeon for MiKO Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, offers his recommendations to achieve your resolutions for 2014. Tip #1: Start small Weight loss is likely on the top of many lists, as is exercising more and eating right. The worst way to start out a new resolution is by feeling pressured by it. Instead, create small, reachable goals for yourself throughout the year and every time you hit that mark, allow yourself a healthy reward. For example, if your goal is to start running, don’t say you will run five days a week right away. Start by putting on your running shoes and see how that motivates you. Then slowly introduce it into your routine. It will keep you on track and make you feel positive about the transformation. When you create a goal to lose a lot of weight in a small amount of time by, for example, overexercising or extreme calorie restriction, you set yourself up for failure. Start small and you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish. Tip #2: Determine how you will achieve your goal. Create a plan for yourself on how you will achieve your resolution. First, identify what isn’t working and set on changing that...slowly. Tip #3: Know that big changes are achievable For what can’t be fixed at the gym or the dinner table, there are other options. Women who have had children often go through a transformation that is difficult or impossible to reverse on their own. Angelica Gutierrez, a woman who grew up in what is considered a low-income community, who comes from a single parent household, and whose first language was Spanish, is now, Dr. Angelica Gutierrez. 1. Angelica, talk to me a little bit about your upbringing coming from a single parent home. I was born and raised by my mom, a single mother in Lincoln Heights, what is considered a low-income community. My mom, from whom I developed my work ethic, was very influential in terms of my career aspirations, as she, as a lot of immigrant parents do, always emphasized the importance of getting a good education, so much so, that she put my brother and me through private Catholic school. My mom’s hard work to ensure my brother and I had everything we needed, starting with a good education, was very influential in terms of my aspirations because I decided I wanted to get a PhD and the most education I possibly could, so that I could become a university professor and help educate the next generation.

2. Your research focused on minority groups; did your background play a factor in this? Yeah it did. When I was growing up, the business field seemed something very foreign to me because I grew up in a very low-income neighborhood, and in a single parent household, so I always had this vision that the only people who entered the business field were people who were white, who were men, and who had wealth, but as an undergrad at UCLA majoring in political science and sociology, I started working with and advising a lot of first generation college students, most of whom were Latinos majoring in business economics. It was always so exciting to meet these students for the first time because they always seemed very enthusiastic about majoring in business economics, some of whom wanted to become CEOs or launch their own business some day. However, a couple of weeks into the quarter, many of these students would come back to ask me for information on how to switch majors because they found it too difficult to major in business economics. 3. You began elementary school with Spanish as your first language. Did you experience any difficulties because of this, and did it ever make you feel ashamed of being a Latina? I never experienced shame, never felt embarrassed, but I did feel intimidated. When I began attending a private elementary school in the second grade, my grade teacher, school teacher, and principal held a meeting with my mom to inform her that they didn’t think I could continue going to that school because they thought, due to my poor performance, I had a learning disability and didn’t have the resources to help me. As a result of this experience, I became even more motivated to help other Latinos who have the same linguistic barriers I had, by instilling in them the belief that they have the ability to do well in school.

4. What do the awards you have received mean to you? The Creo award I received from TELACU, which I actually have in my office, meant so much more than receiving a PhD because it was very gratifying to see that I’m helping to make a difference in people’s lives, but I still feel I have a long way to go. 5. Taking a look back at everything you have accomplished, is there anything you yet want to accomplish? I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to get the PhD and now serve as a business professor, but one of my greatest goals in life is to develop a non-profit organization that’s focused solely on one thing, and that’s increasing the number of Latinos who obtain master’s and business administration degrees from top business schools. I feel it is important for me to empower them to obtain graduate degrees and to assume leadership positions in the business field. 7. Do you think your life would have been different had you not been raised by a single mom? I don’t know if my life would have been different, but I do know that because I was raised by a single mom, I value everything that I’ve obtained a lot more. Every time I think about the degrees that I’ve earned or the position that I have now, I know in my heart that it has all been possible because of the sacrifices my mom has made. 8. What gives you ALEGRIA; what is your formula for ALEGRIA? What takes it away, if anything? I’ll give you an example: I received an email recently from a student who had applied for an internship position at a big Fortune 500 Company and did not get it. This took away my Alegria because I feel this student is very talented, has a strong GPA, and a strong commitment to improving his community. So I think that what takes my Alegira away is just seeing when individuals, Latinos especially, are not given the opportunities they deserve, whether it is obtaining an internship or a position they highly aspire to, because I feel Latinos have a strong capacity to contribute to their communities to corporations. 11. What can you tell someone who is still searching for their own ALEGRIA? I would tell them to pursue their passions, pursue whatever it is that excites them in life.

Una mujer que creció en lo que se considera una comunidad para personas de bajos ingresos, proveniente de un hogar dirigido por una madre soltera y cuya primera lengua es el español ahora es la Dra. Angelica Gutierrez. 1. Angelica, háblame un poco acerca de cómo fue tu educación en casa, en un hogar donde sólo estaba tu madre. Nací y me crió mi mama, una madre soltera, en Lincoln Heights, que se considera una comunidad para personas de bajos ingresos. Mi mamá, gracias a la cual desarrollé mi ética de trabajo, fue muy influyente en términos de mis aspiraciones laborales, ya que ella, al igual que muchos inmigrantes que son padres, siempre destacó la importancia de obtener una buena educación, tanto así que nos metió a mí y a mi hermano en una escuela católica privada. Como resultado de esta experiencia, me sentí incluso más motivada a ayudar a otros latinos que tuvieran las mismas barreras lingüísticas que tuve al inculcarles la creencia de que tienen la habilidad necesaria para que les vaya bien en la escuela.

4. ¿Qué significan para ti los premios que has recibido? Los premios que he recibido han tenido un impacto tan significativo en mi vida. Ha sido un gran honor recibirlos porque me parece que es maravilloso notar que la gente ve lo que yo hago en una forma positiva pero, para mí, realmente me recuerdan que tengo una enorme misión que cumplir en la vida, que es asegurarme de que otros latinos reciban las mismas oportunidades educativas que yo tuve, que otras personas obtengan un doctorado y que tomen puestos directivos, no sólo en el ámbito de los negocios, sino en otras áreas también. El premio Creo que recibí por parte de TELACU, que de hecho tengo en mi oficina, para mí fue mucho más significativo que obtener un doctorado porque fue muy satisfactorio ver que estoy ayudando a hacer una diferencia en la vida de las personas, pero todavía siento que me queda un largo camino por recorrer. 5. Al mirar todo lo que has logrado, ¿hay algo más que todavía quieras lograr? Ha sido una gran bendición haber tenido la oportunidad de obtener el doctorado y ahora fungir como profesora de negocios, pero una de mis grandes metas en la vida es crear una organización sin fines de lucro que se enfoque únicamente en una cosa, que es incrementar la cantidad de latinos que obtengan maestrías y doctorados por parte de las principales escuelas de negocios. Cada vez que pienso en los títulos que obtenido o en el puesto que actualmente tengo, en el fondo de mi corazón sé que todo ha sido posible debido a los sacrificios que mi mamá ha hecho. 8. ¿Qué te trae ALEGRÍA; cuál es tu fórmula para la ALEGRÍA? Uno de los grandes momentos de alegría que experimentó es cuando recibo un correo electrónico o una llamada telefónica de los estudiantes latinos a los que ayudado con sus solicitudes para entrar a la universidad cuando me avisan que los han admitido en alguna escuela, y también cuando me involucro con diferentes organizaciones que están altamente comprometidas con la representación de los latinos en la enseñanza superior. 9. ¿Cómo mantienes viva tu ALEGRÍA? Al seguir interactuando con latinos jóvenes; simplemente es una sensación increíble ver lo enfocados hacia sus metas que están, el entusiasmo que tienen por mejorar sus comunidades. 10. ¿Qué te la quita, si es que hay algo? Te daré un ejemplo. Recientemente recibí un correo electrónico de parte de un estudiante que había hecho una solicitud para ser practicante en una gran empresa de la lista Fortune 500 y no obtuvo el puesto. Esto me quitó alegría porque siento que este estudiante es muy talentoso, tiene buenas calificaciones y está fuertemente comprometido con mejorar su comunidad. Así que pienso que lo que me quita alegría simplemente es ver cuando los individuos, y en especial los latinos, no reciben las oportunidades que merecen, ya sea la posibilidad de fungir como practicante u obtener un puesto al que aspiran con ilusión, porque creo que los latinos tienen una fuerte capacidad para contribuir con sus comunidades o corporaciones. 11. ¿Qué podrías decirle a alguien que todavía esté buscando su propia ALEGRÍA? Cross Cultural Business Steven Ozuna Steven Ozuna is President/CEO of New Bedford Panoramex Corporation with offices in Los Angeles, CA and Washington, DC. Mr. Ozuna was involved with California’s Governor Wilson on Hispanic business issues, NAFTA Free Trade and the Small Business Administration’s Round Table on Latin Business Affairs. He also was the recipient of the prestigious “Small Business of the Year” award from the Department of Transportation in 2002. He currently sits on the corporate board of advisors of the National Hispanic University, the Board of Directors for NBP, and is a member of AAAE, ATCA and the Aero Club of D.C. Prior to joining NBP, Mr. Ozuna studied design and architecture in Europe. Later he moved to Santa Barbara, California where he started several entrepreneur enterprises while continuing his education in Business Administration, Marketing and Sales.

All aspects of society are being affected by globalization as well, so in this way it has been essential in my private life. Juan Devis is an award-winning producer, filmmaker and artist, whose work spans multiple platforms - video, film, interactive media and gaming. Regardless of the medium, his work is often produced collaboratively allowing for a greater exchange of ideas in the production of media and art. With the merger of KCET and Link Media to form KCETLink, Mr. Devis was elevated to vice president in charge of arts and culture programming for the new organization. For more than a decade, Mr. Devis has worked with a number of non-profit organizations and media arts institutions in Los Angeles serving as producer, director, educator and board member.

I remember as a little boy around (3 years old) seeing field workers picking cotton in the State of Texas. I can still remember carrying a little red pail at 4 years old (Rex Lard Can) that I would fill up by picking boysenberries nearby Colton, CA. and my grandfather lovingly teasing me and telling me not to work too hard and to go lay under a shaded tree. Being a migrant farm worker is not an easy job but one that I learned and appreciated for the unity, respect and love it gave us among my siblings and parents. I worked in the fields through age 21. Mostly likely the fruit and vegetables that we picked many of the ALEGRIA readers may have likely eaten (tomatoes, chilies, bell peppers, cucumbers, grapes, water melons, figs, cherries, etc…).

I was 15 year old in the 10th grade and remember my teacher telling me that my school counselor wanted to see me. When I got to his office the counselor was so excited that he congratulated by shaking my hand and telling me – I was accepted to the Upward Bound Program. I did not know what this program was about. My counselor explained that it was a program to help first generation families that were very poor and didn’t have the money to pay for their children college. He told me that because I was a good student the odds were in my favor that I would get a full scholarship. And that all I needed to do was attend the University of Redlands (Redlands, CA). for two summers. On hearing this, I let my head down and immediately my counselor asked what was wrong. I informed him that I did not know if my father would allow me to spend two summers at the University of Redlands. He was surprised and asked why. I informed him that we were migrant farm workers and that as soon as school was out for the summer, that on that same day, if not the next morning, we were all packed with all our belongings, clothing, pots and pans, blankets, all the necessities, etc., needed for our family to live as we looked for work in the fields of California for all the duration of summer (June through sometimes early October) depending when we were done with the harvest of the field we were working. My counselor immediately said he would have a teacher come talk to my father to convince him to let me go to college. I again let my head down and my counselor asked what was wrong now. I informed him that my father did not speak English. With this my counselor said he would send my Spanish teacher (Mr. Velasquez). I remember that day (as if it was yesterday) when my Spanish Teacher came to talk to my father and sell him on the idea of letting me spend two summers at the University of Redlands. We had a small dinner table and my mother was sitting on the right side of my father. She literally was praying that my father would say yes. My father was in the center of the table and my teacher on his left side. My siblings and I were not far from them, listening intently what my teacher was going to say. As my teacher talked to my father, I realized for the first time that their existed a better future and what my teacher told my father…(is what we should all be telling all the students): that Education is the Road to Opportunities and that without it and if you happen to be poor….there is less opportunity for better jobs, housing, medical care, mode of transportation, food,

etc., I remember my teaching telling my father: “Señor Jasso, you need to let your son go to the University of Redlands for these two summers. If everything goes well for him and we know it will…He will mostly likely get a full scholarship to go to a university. Your son has a chance on becoming “Somebody”, maybe a teacher, engineer, lawyer, etc, and if he is a good son…he will come back and help you and your family. He will break the cycle of poverty and his children your grandchildren won’t have to work in fields. He will have a better future” All this time my father was just listening and not saying a word. My mom I could see was still praying. After what seemed to be more than thirty-five minutes my father spoke up and said “Señor Velasquez, what parent doesn’t want the best for his children? Then, he pointed towards me and said….mi hijo (my son) Roy, he has four older sisters, a younger sister and two younger brothers. He is my oldest boy and my right hand. He is my interpreter and he helps me negotiate how much we will get paid in the fields. As it is, we can barely make ends meet. We barely have enough to buy clothes, shoes, make the house payment and buy food. If not for the kindness and trust of others that give us credit to buy food, clothing, etc., we could not make it. It is this money that we all make during the summer that keeps us going for the reminder of the year. I realized that going to college was not going to happened, because there were more important things like survival (food, clothing, house payment, etc.),that my father had just stressed and going to college was not a need! I remember my father then getting out of his chair and telling my teacher that he would think about it and would get back to him. So my father walked my teacher to the door and I could see my mom still praying…My father said good bye to the teacher and closed the door behind him. Then my father looked towards me and asked me: My son, what do you want to do? I wanted to go to college, but I knew my place was to go work in the fields with my parents and brothers and sisters and contribute to the well-being of everyone. Could I be so selfish and tell my father I want to go to college, eat (3) meals a day, with possibility of second servings, be in an air conditioning room, have all the time in the world to learn – when my father, mother, sisters and brothers would be working from sun up to sun down six and even maybe sometimes seven days a week in the hot summer months? Could I be so selfish especially when he told my teacher (he is my right hand -and he needed me)! I wanted to be in both places! But it was not for me to decide. I will never forget what my father then told me: My son, I want you to go to college! My parents, brothers and sisters sacrifice enabled me to go two summers at the University of Redlands. I was blessed to get a 4 year scholarship at the University of the Pacific. Where I got a BA in Spanish and (InterAmerican Studies). Later on I was able to go to the University of Santa Clara for special training in Organizational Management, from there, I got a full scholarship for Masters in Business Administration from the University of Denver, later on went to the University of Boston for Community Relations training and then on to the University of Pepperdine for summer program in International Business. None of this would have been possible without the unselfish love of my father, mother, sisters and brothers. And I give God all the praises and glory for his everlasting love that endures forever Through Him all is possible and I am one of His examples.

Recuerdo que cuando era un niño pequeño alrededor de (3 años ) viendo trabajadores en el campo recogiendo algodón en el estado de Texas. Todavía me acuerdo llevando un cubo a los 4 años de edad (Rex Manteca Can) para recoger moras en Colton, CA . Allí mi abuelo (amorosamente) me me decía a manera de broma, que no trabajara muy duro y que podía descansar bajo un árbol con sombra. Ser un trabajador agrícola migrante no es un trabajo fácil, pero uno que he aprendido y apreciado por la unidad , el respeto y el amor que nos enseñó entre hermanos y padres . Yo trabajé en el campo hasta los 21 años. Muy probablemente las frutas y hortalizas que recogimos muchos de los lectores de ALEGRIA pueden haberse comido (tomates , chiles , pimientos , pepinos , uvas, sandías , higos , cerezas , etc … ). Yo tenía 15 años de edad, en el 10 º grado y recuerdo que mi profesor me decía que mi consejero de la escuela quería verme . Cuando llegué a su despacho el consejero estaba tan emocionado que me felicitó agitando mi mano y me dijo - que habia sido aceptado en el programa de Upward Bound . Yo no sabía lo que este programa era. Mi consejero me explicó que se trataba de un programa para ayudar a las familias de primera generación que eran muy pobres y no tenían el dinero para pagarle la Universidad a sus hijos. Él me dijo que porque yo era un buen estudiante, las probabilidades estaban a mi favor y que iba a obtener una beca complete y que todo lo que tenía que hacer era asistir a la Universidad de Redlands ( Redlands , CA) durante dos veranos . Al oír esto , bajé mi cabeza y de inmediato mi consejero me preguntó: qué te pasa ? Le informé que yo no sabia si mi padre me permitiría pasar dos veranos en la Universidad de Redlands . Él se sorprendió y me preguntó por qué. Le informé que éramos trabajadores agrícolas migrantes y que tan pronto como la escuela terminaba, ese mismo día , si no a la mañana siguiente , todos recogiamos nuestras pertenencias, ropa , ollas , mantas y todas nuestras necesidades , etc para nuestra familia vivir, para irnos a trabajar en los campos de California todo el verano (de junio a principios de octubre a veces ) dependiendo cuando terminabamos con la cosecha del campo que estábamos trabajando . Mi consejero de inmediato dijo que tendría un profesor disponible para hablar con mi padre para convencerlo de que me dejara ir a la universidad. Otra vez bajé mi cabeza y mi consejero me preguntó qué me pasaba ahora. Le informé de que mi padre no hablaba Inglés y con esto, mi consejero dijo que iba a enviar a mi profesor de español (Sr. Velásquez ) . Recuerdo ese día ( como si fuera ayer) cuando mi profesor de Español vino a hablar con mi padre y le vendió la idea de dejarme pasar dos veranos en la Universidad de Redlands . Teníamos una pequeña mesa preparada con la cena y mi madre estaba sentada en el lado derecho de mi padre. Ella , literalmente, estaba orando para que mi padre diría que sí . Mi padre estaba en el centro de la mesa y mi profesor sobre su lado izquierdo . Mis hermanos y yo no estábamos muy lejos de ellos , escuchando atentamente lo que mi maestro le iba a decir .

Cuando mi maestro habló con mi padre , me di cuenta por primera vez que existía un futuro mejor, cuando mi maestro le dijo a mis padres: “es lo que todos deberíamos estar diciendóles a todos los estudiantes que la educación es el camino a las oportunidades y que sin ella, le tocará ser pobre.” Y luego prosiguió : “Sr. Jasso , es necesario dejar que su hijo vaya a la universidad de Redlands para estos dos veranos. Si todo va bien y sé que lo estará ... podrá obtener una beca para ir a la universidad. Su hijo tiene la oportunidad de convertirse en “ alguien, “ tal vez un profesor, ingeniero o abogado y si él es un buen hijo ... él va a volver y a ayudarle a usted a su familia. Él romperá el ciclo de la pobreza y sus hijos, sus nietos no tendrán que trabajar en los campos. Él tendrá un futuro mejor”. Durante todo este tiempo mi

LE DOY A GRACIAS A DIOS, PUES A TRAVÉS DE ÉL, TODO ES POSIBLE Y YO SOY UNO DE SUS EJEMPLOS padre solo escuchaba y no decía ni una sola palabra. Mi mamá seguía orando. Después de lo que parecía ser más de treinta y cinco minutos, mi padre tomó la palabra y dijo: “Señor Velásquez , ( ¿qué padre no quiere lo mejor para sus hijos?), y luego señaló hacia mí y dijo: mi hijo Roy, tiene cuatro hermanas mayores, una hermana menor y dos hermanos menores . Él es mi hijo mayor ! El es mi mano derecha, además es mi intérprete y él me ayuda a negociar cuánto nos van a pagar en los campos. No sé si podemos sacrificarlo todo por dejar que se vaya a la universidad durante dos veranos. Tal como es, apenas podemos llegar a fin de mes. Apenas tenemos suficiente para comprar ropa, zapatos , hacer el pago de la casa y comprar comida. Si no fuera por la amabilidad y la confianza de los demás que nos dan crédito para comprar comida y ropa no podríamos hacerlo . Este es el dinero que todos hacemos durante el verano que nos mantiene va para el resto del año . Lo necesitamos y no sé si puedo dejarlo ir “ .

Así que mi padre acercó a mi maestro a la puerta y pude ver a mi mamá todavía rezando . Mi padre dijo: adiós al maestro y cerró la puerta detrás de él . Entonces mi padre me miró y me preguntó: …Mijo , que quieres hacer tú ? Yo quería ir a la universidad, pero yo sabía que mi lugar era ir a trabajar en los campos con mis padres y hermanos, y hermanas, y contribuir al bienestar de todos. ¿Podría ser tan egoísta y decirle a mi padre que quiero ir a la universidad , comer ( 3 ) veces al día , con posibilidad de una segunda porción , estar en una habitación con aire acondicionado donde tienen todo el tiempo del mundo para aprender - cuando mi padre, madre, hermanas y hermanos estarían trabajando de sol a sol seis e incluso tal vez siete días a la semana en los meses de verano -¿Podría ser tan egoísta? - Yo quería estar en ambos lugares ! Pero nunca voy a olvidar lo que me dijo mi padre luego: “Mijo , Yo quiero Que Tu Vayas al colegio.” El sacrificio de mis padres, hermanos y hermanas me permitieron ir por dos veranos a la Universidad de Redlands . Tuve la bendición de obtener una beca de 4 años en la Universidad del Pacífico donde obtuve una licenciatura en Español y Estudios Latinoamericanos. Más tarde tuve la oportunidad de ir a la Universidad de Santa Clara para obtener una formación especial en Gestión Organizacional y a partir de ahí , me dieron una beca completa para obtener mi Maestría en Administración de Empresas de la Universidad de Denver y más tarde fui a la Universidad de Boston de Relaciones con la Comunidad y la Universidad de Pepperdine para el programa de verano en Negocios Internacionales. Nada de esto hubiera sido posible sin el amor desinteresado de mi padre, madre, hermanas y hermanos . Y le doy a gracias a Dios, pues A través de Él, todo es posible y yo soy uno de sus ejemplos. Ser bilingüe ha sido una ventaja cultural muy grande. Fue por mi español que me dieron la beca a la Universidad del Pacífico , ( UOP ) . Esta universidad tenía un colegio especial dentro del campus llamado Elbert Covel. Español era el idioma que se enseñaba en todas nuestras clases a lo largo de los cuatro años de la graduación . La universidad se centró en América Latina y los alumnos eran de todos los países de habla española en el mundo, (América del Sur , América Central, México , España , Puerto Rico , etc.) Creo que , esta es también una de las razones por las que logré graduarme . Me sentí como si estuviera en casa. Todo el mundo hablaba Español e Inglés . Definitivamente tenía la ventaja entre mis compañeros en el sentido de que yo conocía y vivía en ambos mundos y estaba muy cómodo en ambos. Realmente es una bendición - DOS idiomas , DOS Culturas, DOS Mundos. Y en todos los trabajos que he tenido (mi español y la comprensión de mi cultura hispana ), han sido un factor determinante para el éxito que he tenido en todos mis trabajos.

New year’s eve tequila recipe: Ingredients: 2 Sweet Strawberries Muddled 3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice 1 oz Agave Nectar 2 oz Tequila 2 oz Dry Champagne Muddle strawberries in a shaker and add remaining ingredients (EXCEPT champagne). My first introduction to quality tequila was watching harried bartenders at the Cannes Film festival offer A-list directors and actors top shelf tequila for upwards of $300 a shot. A far cry from the Margarita Mondays and frat party shooters of my collegiate past. Fast forward to a decade plus later. “Mixologists” are the new DJ’s and I am watching up and coming celebrities at Sur in West Hollywood order “organic” tequila to accompany their organic meals and “healthy” lifestyle. Curious, I survey mixologists & bartenders about the merits of organic tequila and they claim that Casa Noble organic tequila, a brand I’ve never tried, tastes as good as the highest priced brands they serve. Curious to see if Casa Noble really has a shot at impressing like premium brands, I asked five cocktail experts to run a blind tequila taste test between Patron, Don Julio and Casa Noble. Casa Noble’s organic Crystal tequila won 7 out of ten times. Smooth, but complex was the consensus. Apparently, the New York Times agrees, recently naming the Casa Noble Crystal Best Blanco Tequila and describing it as “…explosive, with rough, rustic flavors...” Impressed, I tracked down the owners behind the brand.

Alegria: What is your favorite way to drink tequila? Hermosillo: Neat or “straight” as we say in Mexico. That is the way to really taste all the flavors and aromas that make tequila a sophisticated spirit. From the sweet, vegetal notes of the agave to the herbal, flozral and sweet barrel notes; it is an incredibly rich and aromatic spirit. Although, I must mention that creative mixologists have been impressing me with their unique tequila-based cocktails.

Casa Noble is owned in part by Pepe Hermosillo, whose family was one of the earliest tequila producers in the Jalisco region, dating back to the 1700’s, and musician and philanthropist Carlos Santana, who donates his share of proceeds to charity. One of the first and few companies to attain Organic Certification, they are also Kosher certified and one of only 14 companies in Mexico to be awarded the “Green Certificate” by the government for sustained efforts in eliminating waste in the manufacturing process and maintaining efficient energy usage.

Alegria: What qualities do you admire most in the best tequilas? Hermosillo: Quality craftsmanship while respecting the traditions of the craft and caring for our environment during the manufacturing process.

Alegria: Where is your favorite place to drink tequila? Hermosillo: Ambiance is important—whether it is a glamorous bar in a big city or a small speakeasy - but I believe it is the company you are with that really matters. Therefore, my favorite place to drink tequila is wherever the people I love are. Alegria: Three things that should always accompany drinking tequila? Hermosillo: People you enjoy. Great food. Great Music.

Alegria: Favorite bar in the world. Why? Hermosillo: We have many favorites all over the world, but we have a very special affection for the world-famous “La Capilla” in Tequila, Jalisco. The owner Don Javier embodies the devotion and spirit of Tequila, which he has been serving for over 50 years at his humble bar. He still serves his celebrated “Batangas” (his trademark cocktail made with tequila, Coca Cola, lime and salt). La Capilla is considered by experts to be one of the top 20 bars in the world! Alegria: Most cherished item in your bar? Hermosillo: The first ever hand-blown bottles of Casa Noble and special edition bottles bring great memories. Alegria: If not a maker of Tequila, what would you be? Hermosillo: That is a tough one! Carlos is first and foremost one of the world’s best musicians, so he has that beyond making tequila. As for me, I cannot imagine a world without Casa Noble.

Una explosión Británica – donde todo fue brillo y los movimientos musicales y el Rock n’ Roll se unieron el uno con el otro a través de la moda. Fue un homenaje al patrimonio británico de Victoria’s Secret. Este segmento contó con la modelo Ángel Candice Swanepoel, quien llevó el prestigioso y conocido sostén Royal Fantasy Bra con un valor de $10 millones y el cual fue diseñado por Mouawad. Aves de Paraíso – Elegantes representaciones de estas aves raras habitaron este segmento del show. Fue la elegante solución de la re-invención “chic” de las icónicas alas de los Ángeles. Fue seducción, perfección y opulencia. Naufragio – Los Ángeles naufragaron hasta una isla Utopía besada por el sol. Vimos brillantes colores pastel blanqueados por el, tesoros de la playa acentuando siluetas fantasmales y voluminosas. Red ROSA – (PINK Network) – Fue la mezcla de moda urbana en forma grafiti que toma vida a través de los colores. PINK Network usó las ingeniosas y progresivas referencias del “social media” en una forma refrescante, encantadora y fabulosa. Noche en Paris- ¡Caliente, sexy y excitante! BELIZE Of Diamonds and Diplomats… Belize Inspires By Michelle Czernin Von Chudenitz When I was a child, I was given a old book penned by the iconic Letitia Baldrige entitled “Of Diamonds and Diplomats”. A brilliant and entertaining autobiography, Mrs. Baldridge shared insights and anecdotes of her time as the Chief of Staff for Jacqueline Kennedy, Social Secretary to Claire Boothe Luce (US Ambassador to Rome - the first American woman appointed to a major ambassadorial post) and as Director of Public Relations for Tiffany & Co. In reading these memoirs, one learns quickly there are a plethora of activities and expectations when it comes to hosting a diplomat, however, there is an entirely greater set of requirements that come to bear when one is hosting a world leader. And yesterday afternoon, we we witnessed first hand, just that. In a world of over seven (7) billion people, 313 million of those being in America… my business partner and best friend Jessica Kill and I, were invited to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the heart of Beverly Hills to attend a luncheon with one of 196 (depending on who’s number you are looking at) world leaders who directly influence this planet’s daily existence: His Excellency Prime Minister Dean Barrow and First Lady Kim Simplis Barrow of Belize. Spearheaded by Raju Rasiah Inc.’s Director Jeff Goonedwardena, Hon. Consul General to Colombia and Venezuela, Fmr. Sri Lanka Consul General to Western States of United States and Vice President Kyron Davis, former Chief of Special Relations for His Excellency Jean Ping the former President of the United Nations General Assembly, Fmr. President of the African Union and President of OPEC along with a committee of esteemed international business leaders, this luncheon was created to inspire international trade between the United States of America, the State of California, the City of Los Angeles and the country of Belize while raising funds and awareness for the formidable charity created by First Lady Kim Simplis Barrow the Belize Inspiration Center. The center fills an extraordinary void in Belize, providing necessary service to children with disabilities as there are currently very limited opportunities for children to receive much-needed therapy. Looking about the room, we sat alongside a litany of luminaries from the diplomatic, entertainment and business worlds - including Ambassador of Belize in the United States Nestor Mendez, Honorary Consul General of Belize in Los Angeles Eduardo Lama, Honorable Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles Carlos Sada and our good friend the Honorable Consul General of Ecuador in Los Angeles Mr. Eddie Bedón Orbe; legendary performers Engelbert Humperdink, Pat Boone (his wife shared they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary!), Lou Gossett Jr., the voice of CBS radio news Frank Mottek; philanthropists Thomas Kwok and Patricia Spangler; the perennially elegant Director of Los Angeles International Airport Joyce Sloss and the lovely Reverend Gardener; Alegria Magazine’s stunning editor in chief and publisher Davina Efe; private jet aficionado Paul Rubio; our great friend and Hollywood’s preeminent event producer the dashing Mr. Cory Martin, and of course, the gentlemen who I was so fortunate to be ushered a seat next to, his Honorable John A.
