e dice que Los Ángeles es un lugar en donde los sueños se hacen en realidad, aunque sean los sueños mas descabellados. Pero antes de hacer cualquier sueño realidad tenemos que saber exactamente que es lo que queremos. Debemos preguntarnos ¿Cuál es nuestro objetivo? ¿Qué nos gustaría hacer con nuestros días? Y mas importante ¿Tenemos una visión de cómo hacer estos sueños realidad? La mayoría de artistas suelen sentir “El Llamado”, que es lo que los empuja a realizar sus sueños. Se dice que los artistas están más integrados con su lado holístico. Nuestra pregunta es: cómo puede un individuo cualquiera reconocer su vocación, El Llamado” y dedicar su vida entera a desarrollarlo?
Está comprobado que la danza tiene propiedades curativas. Como se indica en “The Complete Family Guide to Alternative Medicine” "... la danza como terapia puede permitir al individuo integrar su ser físico, emocional y cognitivo." En la disertación de Susan Rueppel sobre "El poder curativo de la Danza", la autora concuerda con Anna y Daria Halprin (fundadoras del Instituto Tamalpa), afirmando que "la danza puede ayudar a las personas con enfermedades de muchas maneras: a aumentar su energía vital, mejorar la confianza en si mismas, proporcionar una sensación general de bienestar y reforzar la voluntad de vivir". t is widely known that Los Angeles is where unconventional dreams become reality. But, before arriving at that conclusion, you must first know what you want your dream in life to be. Ask yourself, what is your goal in life? What would you rather be doing this summer? Do you have a vision of how you’d like to make those dreams come true? It is also said that artists usually feel the calling to follow their dreams and that they are well integrated with this holistic vision of themselves and their goal of sharing their art with the world. But, we wonder, how can a non-artist manage to put him or herself in contact with it, “The Calling,” to pursue and apply it to their lives? It is proven that dance has healing properties. As indicated in The Complete Family Guide to Alternative Medicine , “dance movement therapy can enable individuals to integrate their physical, emotional, and cognitive selves.” In Susan Rueppel’s study on this topic, “The Healing Power of Dance,” she agrees with Anna and Daria Halprin (founders of the Tamalpa Institute) and states that, “dance can help those with illness in many ways: to heighten their life force energy, improve self-confidence, provide a general sense of well-being and strengthen the will to live.” And thus we, Jenifer, flamenco aficionada, and Kristelle, professional flamenco dancer, through many years of experience

as creators, dancers and dreamers, have come to realize that a particular cultural tradition has been changing lives at a deep level throughout the globe. This change is taking place quietly and humbly in people’s hearts, yet when let loose, it’s an unquenchable fire of passion that demands attention. There is a particular line of dance that has an effect on the psyche of those who experience it; transforming their lives, helping them tap into their true calling. This art form is named Flamenco.

Flamenco was first mentioned in literature in 1774, yet the components, “Baile” dance, "Cante" song, and "Toque" guitar came together in Andalucia through the combination of Romani gipsy traditional dances, a touch of court dances from France, Jewish song, as well as the Moorish invasion of southern Spain. This bred a genre of performance art that is multi-ethnic and intergenerational. Generally handed down by simple listening, guitarists don't often learn with sheets of music, only by ear. The Cante and Baile as well, are transmitted from teacher to student through listening, arduous lessons and practice.
El Flamenco fue mencionado por primera vez en 1774 en la literatura universal. Sin embargo sus componentes la danza "Baile", el canto "Cante", la guitarra "Toque" se reunieron en Andalucía como combinación de los bailes tradicionales de los Gitanos, incorporando influencias Sefárdicas, Árabes, Europeas, Africanas y del Nuevo Mundo. Se inició una clase de arte que incorporó a todas las edades y etnias y que siguió evolucionando a través del tiempo y transmitiéndose de generación en generación. Our vision and firsthand experience of Flamenco is of a lifetransformative cultural art form that is a catalyst for catharsis. This summer, we are committed to our calling and we are diving in head first, documenting our journey through film. In our documentary we have chosen an exponent of Jondo (mispronunciation of the word “hondo”, by the gypsies in the south of Spain, which means “deep” in Spanish) Flamenco, and we have followed Alicia Morena, as our guide to venture into this world of deep expression. As Alicia states in her book Spanish
t SECTION TITLE Ar vocación de documentar a través del cine nuestro viaje personal y profesional; para ello hemos elegido como guía a Alicia Morena, Bailaora profesional, coreógrafa y profesora de Baile Jondo, discípula de Rosa Duran quien fue una representante máxima del linaje del Flamenco Jondo en Andalucía. Jondo es una mala pronunciación del baile "hondo," por los gitanos del sur de España, que significa "profundo” en español. Alicia preserva esta modalidad de baile en sus clases en el Instituto de Monterey Península y también a través de cursos en todo el mundo. Como Alicia afirma en su libro "Spanish Flamenco Dance: Reference Guide," los bailes Jondos “…reconocen sentimientos de ira reprimida, de persecución, de traición, de libertad negada y de amor y ternura hacia un compañero en la miseria”. ¿Por qué elegimos explorar un arte que no sólo nos motiva sino también obliga a descubrir sentimientos que no son gratos ni necesariamente divertidos? Alicia Morena explica cómo se produce el sentimiento Duende "... ocurre sin aviso durante la lucha artística entre el recuerdo y el olvido, la perfección y la imperfección. Un espíritu aliado o demonio amistoso desciende sobre el bailarín para bailar con él o ella, y trasciende el tiempo y el espacio en un encuentro mágico". Nuestros días de verano nos llevaran a las profundidades de nuestro corazón iluminando aquellos lugares difíciles de visitar, agitando el inconsciente a través del baile. Flamenco Dance: Reference Guide, dances from Jondo lineage acknowledge feelings of pent up anger, persecution, betrayal, denied liberty and love and tenderness toward a companion in misery". This description doesn’t exactly paint a day at the beach, but to us, it is as enticing as a sunny summer day in California. Why do we choose to explore such an art form that not only encourages but forces us to uncover feelings that aren't gratifying or necessarily fun? The answer is simple: the encounter with the Duende. Alicia explains how the Duende sentiment occurs: “... it happens without warning during the artistic struggle between remembering and forgetting, perfection and imperfection, a spirit ally or friendly demon descends upon the dancer to dance with him or her, transcending time and space in a whimsical encounter". Our summer days will be spent plunging into the depths of our hearts and shedding a light on those places that are hard to visit, stirring the unconscious through dance. We recommend you join us.; it will do wonders. What’s our vehicle to self-awareness? We’ve said it before - Flamenco. Our destination: the depth of our soul. We wish to go to those places that we often get distracted from and that can only be visited with our ally, the Duende. This is the union of the human and divine in movement. We yearn for that feeling once it’s gone. We live for that battle with ourselves. Hard to believe, but this is a dream life for us. We can feel deep accomplishment by dancing from the heart as we surmount the challenges that arise technically and emotionally and cross that breach where mind manipulates and oversees everything. This is where the psyche is molded and transformed. We are dedicating time this summer, not without a struggle, to truly explore this art form and document its impact on individuals and their surroundings. We are in pre-production of our documentary about Flamenco in Southern California and an intense seminar with Alicia and the Jondo Flamenco style is just the beginning of our journey. Just as a hint, our documentary is about two performing artists and their story, from mentor to disciple, demonstrating how they transform each other and how Flamenco as a cultural expression native from Spain still has a positive impact at a personal level regardless of your ethnic background. We believe Flamenco aligns all our material needs with our emotional core and drives us to pursue true bliss. This is where the calling is born. Both artists of different backgrounds and ages are affected so profoundly by the experience of Jondo Flamenco that it permeates into every sphere of their lives, ultimately affecting the world around them. Our storyline deals with the teachings of Jondo Flamenco and how it influences these two characters. Tantalizing? Absolutely! Stay tuned as we dive into our dream summer where raw emotions within our souls are stirred up and surface, revealing the power of... Flamenco.

Gabriel What does photography mean to you? Mankind’s most accurate manifestation of the ability to stop time. It is a document that always thrills. A mirror that reflects reality, life. A wonderful picture of oneself saves one from three years in therapy. Seeming attractive to oneself has an incredible impact on the inside. How did this creative collaboration between you start? We were friends before we became partners, we’re cousins. Photography chose us. I remember that day perfectly: we looked at each other and said, “Let’s become photographers”. That’s how we started: we rented a small apartment and that world emerged. In your opinion, what makes a picture immortal? Pictures that become immortal are those that capture a moment in eternity. That makes them infinite, and immortal. What brings you joy? Life brings me joy. Realizing one is alive generates one of the greatest joys in life. What is your idea of a perfect summer life? When I think of summer, the first thing that comes to mind is the city of Los Angeles, it’s a lovely feeling. It’s the concept of summer, sun, heat, sand, palm trees, air. What would you say to young visual artists trying to make a name for themselves in the world of photography? Not to copy anyone else’s work, to be themselves, to go crazy. How would you define your visual style? We strongly believe in emphasizing beauty. It’s more important than fashions or trends.
Qué es la fotografía para ustedes? La manifestación del hombre más lograda de que es capaz de detener el tiempo. Es siempre un documento que emociona. Un espejo de la realidad, es vida. Una gran foto de uno mismo, te evita tres años de terapia. El verse bien a uno mismo repercute increíblemente en nuestro interior. Cómo nació esta colaboración creativa entre ustedes? Fuimos amigos antes de ser socios, somos primos. (Gabriel se casó con la prima de José). La fotografía nos eligió a nosotros. Me acuerdo perfecto ese día: nos miramos y nos dijimos “seamos fotógrafos”. Así empezamos, alquilamos un pequeño departamento y surgió ese mundo. Qué es lo que en su opinión hace que una fotografía sea inmortal? Las fotografías que quedan en la inmortalidad son aquellas que capturan un momento en la eternidad. Eso las vuelve infinitas, e inmortales. Qué les da ALEGRIA? La vida me da Alegría. Saber que uno está vivo me genera una de las alegrías más grandes de la vida. Cúal es su idea de la vida perfecta en el Verano? Cuando pienso en verano lo primero que viene a mi mente es la ciudad de Los Angeles, es una sensación muy linda. Es el concepto de verano, el sol, el calor, la arena, las palmeras, el aire. Qué le dirían a un artista visual joven que está tratando de abrirse un espacio en el mundo de la fotografía? Que cuando generen sus trabajos no copien a nadie, que sean ellos mismos, que se enloquezcan. Cómo definen su estilo visual? Nosotros creemos fielmente en preponderar la belleza. Antes que la vanguardia, o lo que está de moda.
Jose What does photography mean to you? Immortalizing a unique moment, impossible to repeat in time and space. My life. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. How did this creative collaboration between you start? It happened spontaneously, thanks to a series of events, some unforeseen and some actively sought.. We were in college together, and we went through different types of creative collaborations: an ice cream parlor, a video club, hand- painted signs, until we stumbled upon the idea of photography. In your opinion, what makes a picture immortal? The fact that it conveys something. The recipient can visualize it, but it also generates feelings, sensations. What brings you joy? As Martin Caradagian used to say, “The joy of living”. And somehow working in a field you love also brings you joy. What is your idea of a perfect summer life? That place, like Los Angeles, that takes you back to your childhood summer, when you could sit on the sidewalk and talk, eat tasty things and enjoy, without a clear notion of time in the summer. What would you say to young visual artists trying to make a name for themselves in the world of photography? You need to be bold, to dare to create. How would you define your visual style? Paradigmatic, we aim to change all the time. Always seeking beauty as a primary concept. That is the basis for our style.
Qué es la fotografía para ustedes? Inmortalizar un momento único, irrepetible en tiempo y espacio. Mi vida. No me imagino haciendo otra cosa en la vida. Cómo nació esta colaboración creativa entre ustedes? Se dio espontáneamente, por una sucesión de hechos fortuitos en parte y buscados en otro. Éramos compañeros de la universidad, pasamos por diferentes tipos de colaboración creativa, una heladería, video club, carteles pintados a mano, hasta que llegamos a la idea de la fotografía. Qué es lo que en su opinión hace que una fotografía sea inmortal? Que transmita, que el que la recibe además de visualizarla le genere sentimientos, le produzca sensaciones. Qué les da ALEGRIA? Como decía Martin Caradagian “La alegría del vivir”. Y de alguna manera trabajar de lo que te gusta también te da alegría. Cúal es su idea de la vida perfecta en el Verano? Es ese lugar como los Angeles donde te transportas al verano de tu infancia, donde podes sentarte en el cordón de la vereda a charlar, comer cosas ricas, y disfrutar sin noción de tiempo del verano. Qué le dirían a un artista visual joven que esta tratando de abrirse un espacio en el mundo de la fotografía? Que hay que ser lanzados, animarse a crear. Cómo definen su estilo visual? Paradigmático, buscamos cambiar todo el tiempo. Siempre siguiendo la belleza como concepto principal. Es nuestra base de estilo.

Fabian What does photography mean to you? Passion, and luckily it’s my job as well. How did this creative collaboration between you start? It started with me as a client, since I went there requesting a modeling portfolio. Sometime after that, I started keeping track of their schedules, then I produced and started taking pictures. Today, we’re a great team. In your opinion, what makes a picture immortal? What makes a picture immortal is what it conveys. For instance, that feeling that makes it iconic to everyone around the world. What brings you joy? One of the greatest joys in my life is traveling, walking through different parts of the world. What is your idea of a perfect summer life? Bare feet on the sand and warm ocean water. What would you say to young visual artists trying to make a name for themselves in the world of photography? To feel passion. Through it you can achieve whatever you desire in life. How would you define your visual style? I agree with Gabriel, we always emphasize the beautiful. This somehow makes us creators of classic images, because beauty never goes out of fashion.

Comenzó como cliente, ya que fui a hacerme un book como modelo, al tiempo terminé llevándoles la agenda, después produje y empecé a sacar fotos. Hoy somos un gran equipo. Qué es lo que en su opinión hace que una fotografía sea inmortal? Lo que hace que una fotografía sea inmortal es lo que te transmite. Por ejemplo esa sensación que genera que sea icónica para todo el mundo y en todo el mundo. Qué les da ALEGRIA? Una de las alegrías más grandes de mi vida es viajar, caminar por diferentes partes del mundo. Cúal es su idea de la vida perfecta en el Verano? Con los pies descalzos en la arena y el agua del mar tibia. Qué le dirían a un artista visual joven que está tratando de abrirse un espacio en el mundo de la fotografía? Que tenga pasión. A partir de eso se logra lo que se desea en la vida. Cómo definen su estilo visual? Coincido con Gabriel, resaltamos lo bello siempre. Eso nos convierte de alguna manera en generadores de algo clásico, por que la belleza nunca pasa de moda.

I met Alfredo Barrios Jr. on a Short Film that he produced called, “El Cocodrillo”. He’s currently an executive producer and writer on the show Burn Notice. When I visited him at his home, I was greeted by his two wonderfully pleasant children, and his oh so hospitable wife. “Would you like a drink? Natural water or sparkling? And room temperature or cold?” I was and am in instant admiration of what a great father and husband Alfredo manages to be to complement all the work he’s done and is going to do. -H-So what all are you working on? -A- Well besides finishing Burn Notice, I’m working on a spec feature film that I’d actually like to direct. It lives in that world that we shot “El Cocodrillo” in. It’s the story of the pot growers in the National Forests. -H- How did you get the inspiration for that -A- There was a statistic I read that 70% of all pot grown by the Mexican Cartel is actually grown in the United States. And a lot of it is grown in National Forests. Because there’s lots of land to create the irrigation system there. They’re basically pot farms. And the people that are up there are not even cartel guys; they’re like migrant workers is what they are. They send them up there with like 4 or 5 months of supplies and they just live there. And they basically raise the farm and are just trying to make money for their families and for whatever other reasons, but they also give them shotguns and they say defend this with your life, or else. And the National Forests don’t have enough resources to cover the whole expanse of the land, so they can get away with a lot. And then they harvest it and they bring it and they sell it and distribute it. There are thousands of miles of forest and they camouflage everything so they can’t be seen from the sky. They have a very sophisticated system. So it takes place in that world and it’s very noir-like too. -H- It seems like there is more and more interest in content that bridges the gap between Mexico cinema and U.S. cinema. -A- Well everyone is paying lip service to the Latino audience that everyone wants to capture, that voted our president to a second term this last election, and they are actually putting money where their mouth is for there to be an outlet for Latino or Spanish language content such as Mundo Fox, but what’s interesting is they’re setting up the infrastructure to distribute it, but I don’t think there’s a lot of experienced content makers that have the ability to fill that need and that pipeline that they’re trying to set up. So it’s fortunate that it’s lining up, timing wise, in terms of what I’m interested in which is trying to do something with the crime genre that is authentic to that world, and in a sophisticated way, and with all due respect, not in a novel way. -H- Who are the people that are actually supporting and actually putting their money where their mouth is so to speak? -A- The new fad right now are hedge fund guys that want to make these kinds of movies. I met with several and they’re dying to do this stuff; they can’t wait to read the script, and their interest is based on the movie, the short film that
Conocí a Alfredo Barrios Jr. en un cortometraje que produjo titulado El cocodrilo. En la actualidad es productor ejecutivo y escritor para el show Burn notice. Cuando lo visité en su casa, me saludaron sus dos hijos, siempre agradables, y su esposa, de lo más hospitalaria: “¿Quiere algo de beber? ¿Agua con o sin gas? ¿Fresca o a temperatura ambiente?” Sentí, y siento, una admiración instantánea por el gran padre y esposo que es Alfredo, lo cual complementa perfectamente el trabajo que ha realizado y que va a realizar. H: ¿En qué estás trabajando ahora? A: Bueno, además de terminar Burn notice, trabajo en un proyecto de cine que de hecho me gustaría dirigir. Tiene lugar en el mismo mundo en el que filmamos El cocodrilo y es la historia de cultivadores de mariguana en el bosque del National Forest. H: ¿De dónde tomaste la inspiración para este proyecto? A: Hay unos datos estadísticos que leí que dicen que el 70% de toda la mariguana que cultiva el cartel mexicano se produce en realidad en los Estados Unidos. Y una gran parte se cultiva en el National Forest ya que cuenta con mucha tierra en la que crear sistemas de riego. Básicamente se trata de fincas de mariguana. Y la gente que vive allí ni siquiera pertenece al cartel; sencillamente son trabajadores inmigrantes, es lo que son. Los mandan allí con cuatro o cinco meses de provisiones y viven allí y cuidan del cultivo. Lo que ellos están haciendo es ganar dinero para sus familias, o por cualquier otra razón, aunque también les dan armas y les dicen que tienen que defender el cultivo con sus propias vidas, o si no… Y los del National Forest no disponen de los medios para cubrir todo el extenso territorio que comprende el bosque, así que se salen con la suya. Y la cultivan, la transportan, la venden y la distribuyen. El bosque tiene miles de millas y la camuflan de forma que no se pueda ver desde el aire. Tienen un sistema muy sofisticado. La película tiene lugar en este mundo y es muy estilo noir también. H: Parece que cada vez hay más interés en contenido que crea puentes entre el cine de México y el cine de Estados Unidos. A: Bueno, todo el mundo habla de la audiencia latina a la que todos quieren atraer, la que votó por nuestro presidente para un segundo mandato en las pasadas elecciones… y de hecho están invirtiendo y cumpliendo su palabra, creando una salida para el contenido latino y en lengua española, como es el caso de Mundo Fox. Lo interesante es que están construyendo la infraestructura para distribuirlo, pero no creo que haya muchos productores de contenido con experiencia que tengan la capacidad de llenar esa necesidad y ese conducto que están intentando establecer. Así que, por fortuna, ahora es buen momento ya que lo que estoy interesado en hacer es algo del género criminal que muestre ese mundo de forma auténtica, de una forma sofisticada y, con todo el respeto del mundo, si ser novelesco. H: ¿Quiénes son los que de hecho están apoyando e invirtiendo su dinero? A: La nueva tendencia ahora viene de grandes inversores financieros que quieren hacer este tipo de películas. Me he reunido con varios y se mueren por hacer algo así; no pueden esperar a leer el guión y su interés se basa en la película, el cortometraje El cocodrilo. Y la CAA (la Agencia de Artistas Creadores) también apoya completamente la iniciativa y saben que hay muchísimo dinero que podría financiar este tipo de proyecto, pero no hay mucho contenido con el nivel de experiencia que ellos quisieran. Además, estoy adaptando un artículo que encontré en la revista Playboy que se titula El gringo loco para una serie de televisión. " I’ve lived a very charmed life." we shot, “El Cocodrillo”. And CAA is completely behind it and aware that there’s plenty of money that would fund this kind of project, but there’s just not that much content with a level of experience that they would want. In addition, I’m adapting an article that I found in Playboy magazine called, “El Gringo Loco” into a tv series. I highly recommend it, and I’d be interested in hearing what you think about it. It’s a really fascinating tale about a white boy from Portland, who was a football player at Portland State. He ended up getting hurt and falling into a drug habit with pain killers, and after several bad spells, he finds his way to Mexico where he tries to clean up and teach English, but the whole piece is very Hunter S. Thompson; it’s absurdly funny and very well written, but it’s basically about this guy who goes down there and finds the meaning of his life. He ends up being brought in by the cartels and they actually become like his family. Like a real family. It’s really interesting. You know, it’s funny because I’ve been hearing a lot of people say that the cartel world is played out, which is funny to me because I have yet to see a lot of things that are really good, and it feels to me that I haven’t really been taken by one. I think that there just haven’t been creators that have a real insight to that world. There are so many facets to that world. I always say that my dream is to emulate for Latinos what Martin Scorcese did for Italian Americans. He’s looking at all of the facets of that world, because there are a lot of rich human stories in that world. His work is very rich in terms of bringing the Italian immigrant experience to the world at large, but through this lens of this crime world. And to me it’s a bit of his own exploration with his background, and his heritage, and you can kind of see that Scorcese is looking to find and understand himself in a way. If you look at his films, they do feel like an immigrant story but not in a clichéd way. He uses those stories to tell more human universal stories. So that’s what I want to do with the Latino world. -H- One thing you in particular really get is the humor of that world. And that is one thing that Scorcese really gets too. And you can only really capture the humor by having the personal insight on it. When I was young, my extended family members were involved in that crime world, of course I didn’t know as a kid, but it was a very specific kind of humor…it’s a little sadistic, a little macho; it’s constant, but it’s never violent on it’s surface, but it’s almost always violent underneath. -A- Yes I totally agree and “El Cocodrillo” had a lot of that.

Durante mi niñez tenía miembros de mi familia extendida que estaban involucrados en este mundo criminal, aunque por supuesto que esto no lo sabía yo entonces, pero sí es un tipo muy específico de humor… un poco sádico, un poco macho, constante, nunca violento en la superficie, aunque casi siempre violento por debajo. A: Sí, estoy totalmente de acuerdo y El cocodrilo tenía mucho de esto. H: ¿De dónde conseguiste esta visión interna de este mundo? A: Es como dijiste: son mis propias experiencias con mi padre, mi abuelo y mis tíos, que tenían una familia muy grande, y también de la parte de mi madre… escuchando las historias de todos ellos. La verdad es que vengo de una familia de grandes contadores de historias. Mi padre era un gran cuentahistorias y a mi abuelo, que en paz descanse, lo recuerdo entreteniéndonos a todos alrededor de la mesa de la cocina, y digo literalmente a todos, desde a mi abuela a los pequeños de la casa, como yo, que tenía unos cuatro o cinco años y que no me podía apartar de la mesa porque tenía tantas grandes historias, contadas con humor, que no parábamos de reír en todo el tiempo. Así que tomo mucho de ellos. Pero también es lo que tienes en las entrañas. Es parte de quién eres y es también la capacidad de meterte en la cabeza y el cuerpo del personaje. Como por ejemplo, el personaje de Raúl que tú actuaste. No sé de dónde vino la idea, pero de repente, este sicario estaba agarrando una botella de Pepto Bismol y tenía diarrea y era muy interesante. Pero para mí esto es un trabajo del subconsciente, cuando permites que los personajes te lleven a donde quieran… y también está la manifestación física de ese ambiente.

-H- How did you have an insight into that world. -A- It’s like what you said; it’s my own experience with my Dad, my grandfather, and my uncles. My dad had a big family, and my mom’s side was big as well, so as a kid, I heard them all tell stories. The reality is I come from a family of story tellers; my dad was an amazing story teller, and I remember my grandfather, God rest his soul, keeping everybody really entertained at the kitchen table, and I mean literally everyone from grandmothers to little kids like me when I was 4 or 5 years old. I couldn’t get away from the table because he had such great stories and he told them with humor; I mean everyone was laughing the whole time. So I take a lot from them. But it’s also just what is in your gut man. It’s part of who you are. And being able to get into that character’s head and the character’s body as well is the real test, like the character Raul that you played. I have no idea where the idea came from, but all of a sudden this young hit man was reaching for a bottle of Pepto Bismol and had diarrhea, and I was like that’s really interesting. But to me that’s just the subconscious at work, when you allow the character to take you there, and then there is the physical manifestation of his environment. -H- You seem to write with so many layers in terms of the deeper social political meanings without it ever feeling like you’re trying to get a message across. -A- I don’t start with wanting to get a message across, but as I continue writing, a theme begins to emerge. And the theme of “El Cocodrillo” is that nobody can avoid getting their hands dirty or bloody, literally. -H-There’s a very innate competitive nature about you, that you don’t show often, but in talking to you and hearing about your kids being in sports and the sports that you were involved in, I see that there’s this athletic, almost warrior sensibility that reveals itself in your writing. -A- Yeah well it’s definitely high testosterone. I’m a big fan of Hemmingway, you know, Quintin Tarantino; it’s physical. The stories that I’m drawn to are basic stories of survival. And oftentimes that entails physical or literal survival. On a show like Burn Notice, it’s like that every week. But what also comes across is that you’re always tested on a physical level, but it’s always your mind that prevails. It’s always the smarter guy who wins, using his mind…and his heart. -H- Do you think that’s true of life in general? -A- I like to think so. I like to think the pen is mightier than the sword. -H- What brings you Alegria? -A- On the business side what is starting to give me more joy is directing. That’s what I really want to focus on…I mean in addition to writing. I mean I think one is an extension of the other. When you direct you’re actually retelling the story and actually getting it done. And I get more joy out of it than I thought I would because I think that the thing that I wanted to bring to the world, in terms of the story, is much more pure and direct because it doesn’t need to be interpreted and I kind of know the story better than anybody. Beyond that, I think I like the things that most dads like…spending time with my wife, spending time with my kids. I coach both my sons’ baseball teams and both are in Tae Kwon Do…And to your point about competitiveness, I used to do kickboxing and I actually taught it when I was in college. -H- You seem to always have such a calm and humble confidence. How do you keep such coolness and balance and avoid anxiety while you do so much? -A- Actually hot Yoga is my new passion. And you’re very perceptive of me. I think that while I’m usually fairly positive and optimistic and high energy, I do tend to internalize a lot of stress and anxiety but doing the bikram has really been able to “Zen me out.” I actually feel more productive because I don’t let any of that negativity permeate my life as much. But you know I’m a big believer that the entirety of your life informs everything. In other words, one part of your life isn’t separate from another; it all is one and it’s very holistic. And I feel like more and more I’m writing from my gut and my subconscious, and I’m letting my instincts guide me more, and it just feels more authentic that way. I think you can run the danger of outsmarting yourself, over thinking about what the audience wants to see or what executives want to see, and you need to write from a place that speaks to you solely, because if it doesn’t speak to you, it won’t speak to anyone. You realize that if you speak from an authentic place, even if people try to talk you out of it, that ultimately that’s what people respond to. And doing all this physical stuff kind of reduces everything to really basic things, and it gets rid
H: Pareces escribir con muchas capas que tienen significados sociopolíticos profundos sin realmente parecer que estás intentando inculcar ciertas ideas. A: No empiezo con la idea de comunicar un mensaje determinado, pero conforme sigo escribiendo comienza a emerger algún tema. Y el tema de El cocodrilo es que nadie está a salvo de mancharse las manos, incluso de sangre, literalmente. H: Tienes una naturaleza innata competitiva que no muestras a menudo, pero cuando hablas de ti y cuando te escucho hablar sobre tus hijos en los deportes que tú solías practicar, noto que hay una sensibilidad atlética y guerrera que también se revela en tu escritura. A: Sí, bueno, definitivamente tengo mucha testosterona. Soy un gran admirador de Hemmingway y también de Quentin Tarantino, que es muy físico. Las historias que me atraen son historias básicas de supervivencia. Y a menudo esto implica supervivencia física o literal. En un show como Burn notice, es así todas las semanas. Cuando diriges, lo que haces en realidad es recontar la historia y de hecho convertirla en realidad. Y me aporta más alegría de lo que pensé porque creo que es lo que realmente quería aportar al mundo; en cuanto a las historias, es mucho más puro y directo porque no necesita ser interpretado y al fin y al cabo conozco la historia mejor que nadie. Además de esto, me gustan las cosas que le gusta a la mayoría de los padres, como pasar tiempo con mi esposa y con mis hijos. Entreno a los equipos de béisbol de mis dos hijos y los dos también están en taekwondo… Y en cuanto a tu comentario sobre la competitividad, solía hacer kickboxing y de hecho lo enseñaba cuando estaba en la universidad. H: Parece que siempre muestras gran confianza de una forma calmada y humilde. ¿Cómo puedes mantener esta positividad y balance y a la vez evitar la ansiedad por todo lo que haces? De hecho me siento más productivo porque no dejo que la negatividad permee en mi vida tanto. Pero ya sabes que creo firmemente en que toda tu vida influye en todo, en otras palabras, una parte de tu vida no se puede separar de las demás: todo es uno y es muy holístico. Y siento que cada vez más escribo desde mis entrañas y desde el subconsciente y dejo que mis instintos me guíen más y más y se siente más auténtico de esa manera. Pienso que corres el riesgo de engañarte a ti mismo, pensando demasiado lo que la audiencia quiere ver o lo que los ejecutivos quieren ver y lo que hace falta es escribir desde un punto de vista que tenga sentido para ti únicamente, porque si no tiene sentido para ti, no va a tener sentido para nadie. of the impurities. -H-What are some of the hardest times in your life or obstacles you faced growing up? -A- You know it’s funny because in some ways I feel like I’ve lived a very charmed life. I mean I grew up in Norwalk; my dad was a welder; my mom worked in the factory. We didn’t have a lot of money, but I always felt that I lived a very rich childhood. And I had to earn a lot on my own; I mean, I was working when I was 14 years old with a part-time job because that was the only spare money I was going to get. My parents always provided the basics and all the emotional support that you need growing up, but I never felt like I needed anything. I never felt like I lacked anything, so I think the only challenges that I faced were the ones that I created for myself. In other words, I wanted to do very well in school and I didn’t go to a very academically strong school, and I wanted to get into a really good college, so the obstacle of that was to find my own way towards that goal. I ended up going to Harvard from a school basically in south east Los Angeles, and that was a result of not letting anybody say that that wasn’t possible. And I had a lot of great mentors, teachers, and other graduates from that school that ended up mentoring me, so I’m a big believer in that pay it forward thing, because I don’t think anybody ever does it alone. Surmounting those challenges, I mean, I didn’t belong to the country club; I didn’t grow up in a rich suburb; I didn’t go to the particularly good schools, but I’m a big believer that you could work your way out of anything, any hole. And I got that from my mom and my dad who were just incredible workers. My dad was the kind of guy that would say sweep the porch, and if it wasn’t swept perfectly, he would make me do it again until it was. So that’s what my writing is like, sweeping the floor until it’s perfect, or trying to…I can hear my dad’s voice. -H- Did you ever feel like you ran the danger of losing touch with your roots? -A- I don’t know if I ever lost touch, but I definitely feel like it’s more distant. I think you can create a life where you lose touch, but I try not to do that…as much as I can. I mean, I want to keep it real as they say…as much as possible because for a writer the worst thing you can do is lose touch with your own past, your own history, your world, and live in a bubble. And I guess that that is a challenge because you can live in a world that is too sheltered and protected. The irony for me right now is that for a long time, for some reason, Latino stories, or Latino stories per se, were not stories that I was particularly drawn to, and I don’t know why that was, but the irony now is that while I’ve grown more distant in terms of time from my culture in the sense that I now live in Manhattan Beach and I don’t live in Norwalk, I’m actually more interested in going back and exploring that world more. I think that as you get older you have more of a desire to understand yourself better, and I think you have more of a capacity to do it. And you understand how everything you’ve done has kind of led to this, and I’m just really fascinated with this now. And not just the cartel world but all facets…politics and culture. Alfredo and I went to a Clippers game once, and apparently the Clippers kicked butt, but the whole game I was just engulfed with intrigue about Alfedo’s story ideas. The audience seemed to randomly keep bursting into cheers, and so I would kind of very genuinely cheer along, even though I was unaware of what was actually happening in the game…and I realized and noticed that what I was really doing was rooting for Alfredo.
A: ¿Sabes? Es divertido porque en cierta forma siento que tuve una vida muy agradable. Es decir, crecí en Norwalk, mi padre era soldador, mi madre trabajaba en una fábrica, no teníamos mucho dinero pero siempre sentí que tuve una infancia muy rica. Y tuve que ganarme la vida solo, es decir, empecé a trabajar a los catorce años con un trabajo a tiempo parcial porque esa era la única manera de ganar un poco de dinero para mis cosas. Mis padres siempre se encargaron de las cosas básicas y de todo el apoyo emocional que necesitaba durante esos años pero nunca sentí que necesitara nada y nunca sentí que me faltara nada, así que pienso que los únicos obstáculos que afronté fueron los que me puse yo mismo. Superar esos retos, es decir, por ejemplo, yo no pertenecía a ningún country club, no crecí en ningún suburbio rico, no fui a escuelas particularmente buenas, pero creo firmemente que con trabajo se puede conseguir todo. Y eso lo he sacado de mi madre y de mi padre que eran unos trabajadores increíbles. Mi padre era el tipo de persona que me mandaba barrer el porche y si no lo barría perfectamente, me lo hacía volver a hacer hasta que estuviera perfecto. Y así es como escribo, barriendo el piso hasta que quede perfecto, o al menos intentándolo… Todavía puedo escuchar la voz de mi padre. H: ¿Has sentido alguna vez el peligro de perder el contacto con tus raíces? A: No sé si alguna vez he perdido el contacto, aunque definitivamente me siento más distante. Pienso que se puede crear una vida en la que se pierda el contacto pero intento no hacerlo… en la medida de lo posible. Lo que quiero decir es que quiero vivir en el presente de una forma tan real como sea posible porque para un escritor lo peor es perder el contacto con tu propio pasado, tu propia historia, tu mundo y vivir en una burbuja. Me imagino que eso es un reto porque se puede vivir en un mundo demasiado resguardado y protegido. La ironía para mí ahora mismo es que, durante mucho tiempo, por algún motivo, las historias latinas o las historias de latinos en sí no eran historias que me atrajeran de una manera particular y no sé por qué. La ironía ahora es que, aunque en la actualidad estoy más distante de mi cultura, en el sentido que ahora vivo en Manhattan Beach y no en Norwalk, ahora estoy mucho más interesado en regresar y explorar ese mundo. Creo que cuando te haces mayor, crece un deseo de comprenderte a ti mismo más y pienso que se tiene más capacidad para hacer esto. Y entiendes cómo todo lo que has hecho te ha llevado a este punto y ahora esto me fascina muchísimo. Y no sólo el mundo de los carteles sino en todas las facetas, como en la política y la cultura. Alfredo y yo fuimos a un partido de los Clippers una vez y parece ser que los Clippers jugaron muy bien, pero durante todo el partido, yo estaba completamente intrigado y absorto con las ideas e historias de Alfredo. El público de vez en cuando rompían en gritos de apoyo al equipo y yo más o menos los imitaba, aunque realmente no estaba pendiente de lo que estaba pasando en el partido... y me di cuenta de que al que realmente estaba apoyando era a Alfredo.

It was an honor to sit down with Javier at his new restaurant inside the Aria Hotel. Dressed to the Nines and with a welcoming smile, he reminisced about how it all began. I was there to listen and write it all down.
Fue un honor sentarme con Javier en su nuevo restaurante dentro del Hotel Aria. Impecablemente vestido y con una sonrisa acogedora, rememoró cómo empezó todo. Yo estaba allí para escuchar y escribirlo todo.
So let us begin:
Empecemos:
Javier’s first big dream was to buy a car. He was living in Tijuana at the time -where he was born and raised, when he got this idea of coming to California.
El primer gran sueño de Javier fue comprarse un carro. Vivía en Tijuana en esa época, donde nació y se crió, cuando tuvo la idea de venir a California.
With the dream of getting that first car and going back home, Javier worked as a dishwasher at Tortilla Flats in Orange County. It was 1969. He bought his first car and stayed in Orange County.
Con el sueño de conseguir su primer carro y volver a casa, Javier trabajó lavando platos en Tortilla Flats en Orange County. Era el año 1969.
From 1969 to the 1980’s, Javier was promoted from being a dishwasher and a cleaner to being a waiter, then a bartender, a little later to a manager and finally to general manager. And it is precisely during those years, when Javier first met his business partner, Mark Post, who also worked as a waiter at Tortilla Flats. He remembers some of their early conversations: “Mark used to tell me: Javier let’s open a restaurant. But I was not ready. I did not pay attention to him at that time.” It was not until Javier was fired from there, from where he had spent most of his life, that he remembered Mark and thought: “I am going to contact him.” And so he did. He took a 7 month break to brainstorm and collect his ideas and then bounced back stronger than he was before. Mark Post, Javier’s business partner went on to also become a developer of hotels and resorts including the beautiful and romantic Cabo Azul Resort and Spa in Los Cabos as well as a legendary champion of the Baja 1000.
Desde 1969 hasta los años 80, Javier ascendió de lavaplatos y limpiador a mesero; de ahí a barman y poco después llegó a ser gerente y por último gerente general. Y fue precisamente durante esos años cuando Javier conoció a su socio de negocios, Mark Post, cuando él también trabajaba de mesero en Tortilla Flats. “Mark me solía decir: Javier, ¡abramos un restaurante! Pero yo no estaba preparado. No le presté mucha atención entonces”, recuerda. No fue hasta que despidieron a Javier de allí, donde había pasado la mayor parte de su vida, cuando se acordó de Mark y pensó: “Me voy a poner en contacto con él”, y lo hizo. Se tomó 7 meses para pensar y recoger ideas y volver con más fuerza que nunca.
Mark Post, el socio de Javier se convirtió en unos de los hoteleros más grandes, en los cuales se incluye el hermoso y romántico resort, Cabo Azul Resort y Spa en Los Cabos. Además, Mark Post es un campeón legendario de Baja 1000.
Y sí, como dicen, el resto es historia. Yes, the rest as they say is history. Javier did want to prove himself to those who had disappointed him and he was sure that he did not want just any kind of Mexican Restaurant, but the very best in Laguna Beach. Nine years after their success in Laguna he and his partner, Mark, decided to open another location in the Irvine Spectrum. They contacted famed restaurant designer Dodd Mitchell, who created the beautiful ambiance of Javier’s in Irvine, Crystal Cove and the new Las Vegas location.
Some of his original ideas for the menu included food that at the time was completely different from what was available, e.g. crab and lobster enchiladas of the highest quality. As the waiters start showing up for their shift, they stroll by with this greeting: “Hi, Jefe,” “Hi Boss.” You can tell that they love their work. Javier smiles at them and then looks back at me. “Our employees are like family. Most of the employees in Irvine and Crystal Cove have been with us for many years. Here everyone is equal and a very important part of our success. I want people to remember that without all the workers, a business owner is nothing. We all must learn to respect everyone from the dishwasher to the people in higher positions.”
Javier is not your average successful restaurant owner. He has managed to keep it all in perspective and very close to his heart: “All my children run each of the locations. They are excellent people. I am very proud of them. I taught them to never forget where we come from.” When asked about the hardest part of his current success with his new Javier’s Las Vegas, he had an interesting comment: “Being away from my wife and my grandchildren. They are my life.” And as if his personal story was not incredible enough, his wife was a cook at Tortilla Flats when they met and became friends. When he went to ask for the hand of his wife, he can’t help but laugh when he recalls his mother-in-law’s answer: “Javier, how are you going to support her with a dishwasher’s wage?” He just said: “Señora, no se preocupe, I will be very rich someday.” I guess sometimes a mother’s intuition is wrong. As for his clients, Javier says, “We owe it to all the beautiful people in Southern California who have supported us throughout the years. They are not our clients; they are our friends.”
Javier quería demostrar su valía a aquellos que le habían defraudado y estaba seguro de que no quería montar cualquier tipo de restaurante Mexicano, sino el mejor en Laguna Beach. Nueve años de éxito después junto a su socio Mark Post decidieron abrir otra locación en Irvine Spectrum. Allí fue cuando contactaron al diseñador, Dodd Mitchell, quien creó el hermoso ambiente de Javier’s en Irvine, Crystal Cove y ahora el de Las Vegas.
Algunas de sus ideas originales para la carta incluían platos que en aquel momento eran completamente diferentes a todo lo que había disponible: enchiladas de cangrejo y langosta de la mejor calidad. Al llegar los meseros para empezar su turno, pasan saludando: ““Hi, jefe,” “Hi, boss”. Es evidente que les encanta su trabajo. Javier les sonríe y luego me mira: “¿Ves a estos muchachos? Tenemos que aprender a respetar a todos, tanto a la persona que lava los platos como a la gente con otros puestos.” Javier no es el dueño exitoso típico. Ha conseguido mantener todo en perspectiva y muy cerca de su corazón: “Mis hijos operan cada uno de los locales. Son gente excelente. Estoy muy orgulloso de ellos. Les enseñé a nunca olvidar de donde vienen.” Cuando se le pregunta qué es lo más difícil de su éxito hoy en día con su nuevo Javier´s en las Vegas, contesta: “Estar lejos de mi esposa y mis nietos. Ellos son mi vida.” Y si su historia personal no fuera lo suficientemente increíble, su esposa era cocinera en Tortilla Flats cuando se conocieron y se hicieron amigos. Fueron a Tijuana para pedir la mano de su esposa y no puede evitar reírse cuando recuerda la respuesta de su suegra: Javier, ¿cómo vas a mantenerla con el salario de un lavaplatos? Él simplemente respondió: “Señora, no se preocupe. Seré muy rico algún día”. Parece que a veces la intuición de madre puede fallar. En cuanto a sus clientes, Javier dice: “Se lo debemos todo a la maravillosa gente del sur de California que nos ha apoyado a través de los años. No son nuestros clientes, son nuestros amigos.”

George Esquivel, Shoe Designer of Mexican Descent, launches collection with Tommy Hilfiger For George Esquivel, life did not start off smoothly. At 19, and with his father in prison, he decided to escape the pain in his life through design. It all started with an interest in attending shows in Orange County, where fashion started awakening something within him, something that, without his knowing, would color his life and take him in a new direction. After working in construction and other odd jobs, Esquivel began drawing what would later become his first shoes. The rest is history. He started selling those first shoes to friends and acquaintances, and soon local celebrities discovered him and placed their orders. Ever since, Esquivel has had the opportunity to interact with design geniuses, such as reknowned designer Tommy Hilfiger, who told Esquivel he’d like to work on something with him: “I like your work. I’d like to work on something with you.” For this man with Mexican parents, life wasn’t going so well. However, he is now Living his Dream. “My ALEGRIA is life, my family, doing what I do… what God has given me is like a dream.”
Para George Esquivel la vida no comenzó nada fácil. A sus 19 años y con su padre en la cárcel, decidió escapar del dolor de su vida a través del diseño. Todo nació con una inquietud, visitando Shows en el condado de Orange County donde la moda empezó a despertar en él algo que sin saber, le daría un nuevo color a su vida. Luego de trabajar en la construcción y otros trabajos varios, Esquivel se dedicó a dibujar lo que serían sus primeros zapatos. Y el resto es historia. Comenzó a venderle a sus amigos y conocidos sus primeros zapatos y poco a poco las celebridades locales lo descubrieron e hicieron sus pedidos. Desde entonces, Esquivel ha tenido la oportunidad de rozarse con los genios del diseño y el aclamado diseñador Tommy Hilfiger, quien le dijo a Esquivel que le gustaría hacer algo con él : “ Me gusta tu trabajo. veryone has a different tastes in music, in which they find peace, inspiration or simply fun. My favorite music genre happens to be electronic music. Within this genre there are many subgenres such as progressive and house music. Recently, these genres fell into mainstream pop-culture and a rising star came along. Well allow me to introduce you to one of the most popular music producers in the industry, Tim Bergling also known as Avicii. House music has become a very popular trend nowadays; however, a few years back only a minority of people listened to this genre. While this happened, Tim was in his senior year of high school, he said “I really started getting into it my senior year of high school. At that point, I wasn’t thinking about any other career options because I was so involved in my music and making that work”. At the present times, Tim is at the top of his career where the music he produces happens to be today’s most popular tunes. So, what does a 23 year old, celebrity DJ who is living a dream, do in your spare time? “There isn’t much spare time”, said the

Dentro de este género hay muchos subgéneros, como el progresivo y la música house. Recientemente, estos géneros se integraron a la cultura pop convencional y surgió una estrella en ascenso. Permítanme presentarles a uno de los productores musicales más populares en la industria,Tim Bergling, también conocido como Avicii. La música house hoy en día se ha convertido en una tendencia muy popular, sin embargo hace unos cuantos años sólo una minoría de las personas escuchaba este género. Mientras esto ocurría, Tim iba en su último año de preparatoria. Dijo: “Realmente me empecé a adentrar en esto durante mi último año de preparatoria. I would love to learn even more languages…” This is of great influence to his work, “Things like social media have made today’s world so connected and that’s why it is important to be educated in other cultures – especially, as in my line of work, when touring from country to country. It helps me connect with my fans around the world, on a more personal level.” Being Avicii, one can only imagine how hectic his schedule might be. However, he has had many rewarding experiences in his short career... So far Avicii’s most unforgettable experience has been his collaboration with Madonna during Ultra Music Festival: “Madonna joined me on stage and it was just insane. She is such a legend – it was very surreal to be playing a set with her on stage”. This collaboration has set the bare high; however, that doesn’t stop Avicii from fantasizing about other collaborations, “My dream collaboration is Adele, her voice is absolutely amazing”. To conclude, I asked what brings ALEGRIA to Avicii? He soulfully answered, “A lot of things bring me happiness! Obviously hanging out with my family and friends, but also my fans; there is no better feeling than when you get an instant response from so many people. It’s like a sea of people becoming one, jumping as one.” Said the DJ. “Basically playing in front of a huge crowd - and dropping that track - is the best experience. “ As an electronic music fan, I can guarantee this experience not only brings ALEGRIA to him, but also to every single person in the crowd.

Me encantaría aprender hasta más idiomas…” Esto es una gran influencia en su trabajo. “Ciertas cosas como las redes sociales han hecho que el mundo de hoy esté muy conectado, y por eso es importante tener conocimientos de otras culturas– sobre todo, como sucede con mi tipo de trabajo, al ir de gira de un país a otro. Me ayuda a conectarme con mis fans del mundo entero a nivel más personal.” Considerando que es Avicii, uno apenas podría imaginarse qué tan pesado ha de ser su horario. Sin embargo, su carrera ha incluido muchas experiencias gratificantes. Hasta ahora, la experiencia más inolvidable de Avicii ha sido su colaboración con Madonna durante el Ultra Music Festival. “Madonna se subió al escenario conmigo y simplemente fue una locura. Ella es toda una leyenda – fue muy surrealista estar tocando un set con ella en el escenario”. Esta colaboración ha elevado las expectativas; sin embargo, eso no evita que Avicii tenga fantasías sobre otras colaboraciones. “Mi colaboración de ensueño sería con Adele, su voz es absolutamente asombrosa”. Es como un mar de personas que se convierten en una sola, saltando como si fuera una.” Dijo el DJ: “Básicamente, tocar ante una gran multitud - y poner ese track - es la mejor experiencia.” Como fan de la música electrónica, puedo garantizar que esta experiencia no sólo le brinda ALEGRÍA a él, sino también a cada persona de la multitud.

Waking up every morning brings me Alegria. I know some people need extravagant things to happen in order for them to be happy but not me, I celebrate the small things on a daily basis, the fact that I get to wake up, breathe, wiggle my fingers and just be ALIVE. It truly makes me happy to be given another opportunity everyday to accomplish my goals and dreams. When you wake up with a grateful attitude everyday it will change your life. I wake up with an attitude of gratitude everyday!
Despertarme cada mañana me da Alegría. Sé que algunos necesitan que les ocurran cosas extravagantes para ser felices, pero yo no. Celebro las pequeñas cosas de la vida diaria: el hecho de que me despierto, respiro, muevo los dedos y estoy VIVA. De verdad que me alegra que se me dé otra oportunidad cada día para conseguir mis metas y sueños. Si te despiertas con una actitud agradecida todos los días, cambiará tu vida. ¡Yo me despierto con una actitud de gratitud todos los días!
* How has your bilingual background influenced your work and your personal life? Wow, well all I can say is I am so happy that my parents were so strict with me when it came to me speaking Spanish in the home. They reinforced it to the max because they knew I would learn English at school. Being bilingual has been a part of me since I was little so it feels very natural and organic, nothing forced. It’s actually a beautiful thing because as Edward James Olmos told me the last time I interviewed him, “this country belongs to those who speak Spanglish!” I couldn’t agree more. Being a bilingual entertainer has allowed me to reach a larger audience and connect with the Latino community in organic ways. Because the entertainment industry is changing so rapidly towards a more bilingual market, my ability to speak both languages makes me a double threat!

¿Cómo ha influido en tu trabajo y tu vida personal el hecho de ser bilingüe? ¡Uy! Bueno, todo lo que puedo decir es que estoy muy feliz de que mis padres fueran tan estrictos conmigo en cuanto a hablar español en casa. Lo recalcaron al máximo porque sabían que aprendería español en la escuela. Ser bilingüe ha sido una parte de mí desde que era pequeña así que se siente muy natural, nada forzado. De hecho, es una cosa preciosa porque, tal como me dijo Edward James Olmos la última vez que lo entrevisté: “¡Este país pertenece a los que hablan Spanglish!” No podría estar más de acuerdo con él. Ser una locutora bilingüe me ha permitido llegar a una audiencia más grande y conectar con la comunidad latina de forma natural. Ya que la industria del entretenimiento está cambiando muy rápidamente hacia un mercado más bilingüe, mi capacidad de hablar en ambos idiomas ¡me convierte en una doble amenaza!

The best thing about being a Latina media personality is the opportunity to connect with my listeners in such a human way. I love being a personality and being Latina but it comes with a sense of responsibility to work harder and stay focused because you know there are people that get strength from you and admire you. I love being in the position that I am because it allows me to give guidance to my listeners that might need that extra push and the best part is all it takes for me to make a difference is being myself. My slogan is “Be yourself, everyone is already taken.”
Lo mejor de ser una latina conocida de los medios de comunicación es la oportunidad de conectar con mis oyentes de una forma humana. Me encanta ser una persona conocida y ser latina pero esto conlleva un sentido de responsabilidad para trabajar más duro y estar enfocada porque sabes que hay personas que dependen de ti para tomar fuerzas y que te admiran. One experience I like to share is my story of my move to Palm Springs and then to Chicago. Both were risky, scary moves that felt very uncomfortable but in my mind and heart I knew that even though I felt scared it was the right thing to do. Moving away from family is scary especially when living with them is all you’ve known. The learning lesson from both of my moves is: “do what scares you, it might feel scary but feeling scared is a reminder that you are alive” AND “don’t let fear control you, let it push you to places you’ve never dreamed of”.
Una experiencia que me gustaría compartir es la historia de cuando me mudé a Palm Springs and luego a Chicago. ina Rodriguez sparks any space she walks in. She exudes a rare quality for a young actress in Hollywood. She walks and talks with purpose, a mission bigger than herself. She’s fierce and hot in a sassy Puerto Rican kind of way and when you mix it with her French genes you just get a woman whose strength bedazzles you. I had heard about her from a close friend of mine, a fellow actor captivated by her charisma and a recent speech she gave at a NALIP gala. A few weeks later, we happenned to run into each other at a launch party in Hollywood. I recognized her and approached her ready to get the subtle yet ever present egotistical aura of Hollywood actresses. Boom! Instead I got, a breezy and amicable conversation and someone who could be my friend. But there was one quality that seemed the most revealing: Once you walk away from Gina, you leave filled with inspiration. Minutes after as I walked out of the party, I told one of my friends: Who can be better than her for our next ALEGRIA cover? She is a Latina actress who radiates light, passion and who strives to inspire others, molding the perception of overrated beauty standards and changing the way Latinos are perceived in Hollywood. My friend agreed. Gina Rodriguez: The perfect cover girl! Not too long after that, We scheduled our photoshoot in Marina del Rey. She arrived with a summery colorful long dress much like a

Her warmth is contagious and yes, the way she can be so funny and blunt… and take you by surprise with her comments. We had agreed that our photoshoot would show a glamorous and sexy Gina after checking her images on Google and seeing that she was portrayed always as the funny, tough or more urban character. “ You are going to change the way people view me. I am so excited. This is going to change my career.”

1. How has your bilingual and multicultural heritage influenced your work and your personal life? Well,I believe being multicultural has given me perspective on how similar we all truly are. Living two cultures was a blessing; communicating in two languages allows me to reach, understand and be a part of more people's lives. It's truly a gift. 2. Why do you love acting? I love to tell stories. I love to be a vessel for someone who wants to communicate a message, purpose or dream. Acting allows me to fly, to learn, to communicate my heart. Life is a journey full of growth and when I get the chance to grow and possibly help others grow I'm at my greatest peace. 3. How did your passion for the arts begin? Tell us about your salsa dancing days and NYU? I started my artist life dancing salsa in Chicago at a very young age. It was because of dance that I gained confidence in the arts. I found my voice when I decided to go to NYU and get trained in acting. And ultimately through education I feel as though I've been prepared with a tool belt in this industry that cannot be taken away from me. This is why I am also such an advocate for education; it's the one thing no one can take away from you. 4. What are some of the most memorable experiences you lived during these times? I was able to travel the country dancing salsa at a young age. I was able to see life outside of my little neighborhood in Chicago, realize that I was capable of seeing the world and that nothing but myself could stop me. My favorite memory was my last World salsa congress before I left for NYU. It was in Puerto Rico and I was turning 18. I was dancing at the height of that career in my

Cuéntanos sobre tus días de bailar salsa y sobre NYU. Empecé mi vida como artista al bailar salsa en Chicago cuando era muy joven. Fue gracias a la danza que obtuve mucha seguridad en cuanto a las artes. Hallé mi voz y decidí ir a NYU para educarme en cuanto a actuación. motherland with my family there to see me, no better birthday present. 5. As an artist, what message do you want to carry out and what is your biggest responsibility as an artist? Well, I believe you nailed it in the question, responsibility. I think artists today lack the knowledge of their responsibility that comes with the many blessings a career in the arts gives one. We forget that our every move and decision can influence a generation, forget that, even just influencing one person’s life is a huge responsibility. So what do you make out of this opportunity is the question. I believe my purpose has always been to create more opportunities for others of all ethnicities. As a Latina, breaking barriers in stereotypes has always been a driving force in my decision making for my culture’s image. And as a woman, I desire to change social norms in regards to beauty. I believe there is a healthy lifestyle we can all be working towards and when it comes to the arts, promoting drug free, healthy eating habits and strong character can be instrumental in the way our next generation treat themselves and the world. 6. Your biggest dreams... Are coming true daily. But to dream big, work consistently in both TV and film. Use my platform to create organizations for education, health and the arts. Open a free clinic for my sister (who is a doctor) so she can live her dream and be the best role model I can be to my nieces and nephews. 7. A day in the life of Gina Rodriguez...haha wouldn't you guys like to know! Let's put it this way, I do something that scares me at least once a day. Today, I will skydive. Tomorrow, who knows I may just be in another country. 8. What are your dog's names and what have they taught you? Ted is my eldest, Yorkie rescued from Bogota Colombia. Casper, a Maltese poodle, I rescued here in LA to be a companion to Ted while I'm away on shoots. They are my loves. They teach me things about myself and life all the time. But I believe the best lesson has been one in unconditional love and giving gracefully. To learn to love with nothing in exchange is ultimately I believe a beautiful and selfless life that I truly desire to live. 9. What brings you ALEGRIA? Alegria for me is family, travel, loving and living life to the fullest. I am brought to Alegria when I see my niece learn something new, laugh at something I forgot was funny or remind me how insanely precious life is. 10. A book you love..Random Family. 11. My soul mate I have yet to find but when I do, we will laugh, forgive, cry, travel and learn something new every day together.
13. What are the challenges of dating life as a sucessful actress?

Como artista, ¿qué mensaje quieres transmitir y cuál es tu máxima responsabilidad como artista? Bueno, creo que lo identificaste en la propia pregunta, la responsabilidad. Creo que los artistas de hoy no saben de la responsabilidad que viene junto con las múltiples bendiciones que te da una carrera en las artes. Nos olvidamos de que cada acción y decisión nuestra puede influir sobre una generación, olvídalo, incluso influir en la vida de una sola persona ya es una enorme responsabilidad. Así que la pregunta es qué hacer ante esta oportunidad. Creo que mi propósito siempre ha sido crear más oportunidades para los demás, los de todos los orígenes étnicos. Como latina, romper con las barreras de los estereotipos siempre ha sido un impulsor cuando tomo decisiones relacionadas con la imagen de mi cultura. Y como mujer, deseo cambiar las normas sociales en cuanto a la belleza. Creo que hay un estilo de vida saludable al que todos podemos aspirar y, en cuanto a las artes, promover hábitos libres de drogas y basados en una alimentación sana y en una fuerza de carácter puede tener un impacto en la manera en que nuestra siguiente generación se trate a sí misma y trate al mundo. 6. Tus más grandes sueños... Se hacen realidad a diario. Pero para soñar en grande, trabajo de manera constante tanto en televisión como en cine. Quiero usar mi plataforma para crear organizaciones a favor de la educación, la salud y las artes. Abrir una clínica para mi hermana (quien es doctora) para que pueda vivir su sueño, y ser el mejor modelo a seguir posible para mis sobrinas y sobrinos. 7. Un día en la vida de Gina Rodríguez... Jaja, ¿a poco no les gustaría saber? Digámoslo de esta manera, cada día hago al menos una cosa que me asuste. Hoy me tiraré en paracaídas. Mañana, quién sabe, a lo mejor estaré en otro país. 8. ¿Cuáles son los nombres de tus perros y que te han enseñado ? Ted es el mayor, es un Yorkie rescatado de Bogotá, Colombia. A Casper, un maltés con poodle, los rescaté aquí en Los Ángeles para que acompañara a Ted mientras yo salgo a grabar. Son mis amores. Todo el tiempo me enseñan cosas acerca de mí misma y de la vida. Pero creo que la mejor lección ha sido una sobre amor incondicional y saber dar. Aprender a amar sin recibir nada a cambio finalmente es lo que creo que produce una vida hermosa y sin egoísmo que realmente deseo vivir. 9. ¿Qué te trae ALEGRÍA? Para mí la Alegría es la familia, es viajar, es amar y vivir la vida al máximo. Me trae Alegría ver cuando mi sobrina aprende algo nuevo, cuando se ríe de algo que se me olvidaba que era gracioso o cuando me recuerda lo increíblemente valiosa que es la vida. 10. Well I'm attracted to strong men, artistic men and let's be real those manly men. Being a strong woman, they are either in love with it or absolutely intimidated. So eventually I’ll find my puzzle piece. And then, there's the fear of someone's intention with you as an actress which is a scary road to even think about, so I don't or won't. Haha 14. If you could change one thing in the world... that would be... wow I feel like I'm up for Miss Universe. Equality. Ignorance amongst differences. Religion, to end "holy wars", ironic. Poverty. Child labor/trafficking/slavery. 15. Something you can't stand...when blessings are taken for granted. 16. What advice can you give any artist who feels hopeless about their career or feel like giving up? For one, hopelessness comes from not being productive. So, if you feel hopeless it's because you don't have a goal you are working towards. It's not about the success it's about the journey; If you are working hard, success will come and then what? You will want more. So enjoy the journey, enjoy the bad because it's lessons that prepare you for the good, pick yourself up when you fail because then you will be taller for when you succeed. Enjoy the process because that my friends is life. And the best time of your life is the life you are living right now.
12. El hombre que cambiará tu vida. Fue mi padre y ya lo hizo. Todavía me falta encontrar a mi alma gemela pero, cuando lo haga, reiremos, perdonaremos, lloraremos, viajaremos y aprenderemos algo nuevo cada día que estemos juntos. 13. ¿Cuáles son los retos de la vida romántica al ser una actriz exitosa? Bueno, me atraen los hombres fuertes, los hombres artísticos y, sinceramente, los hombres varoniles. Cuando eres una mujer fuerte, o les fascina o se sienten completamente intimidados. Así que eventualmente encontraré mi pieza del rompecabezas. Y aparte está el miedo de la intención que alguien tenga hacia ti por ser actriz, lo cual da miedo incluso de sólo pensarlo, así que no lo hago ni lo haré. Jaja. 14. Si pudieras cambiar una cosa en el mundo... eso sería... Guau, me siento como si estuviera en el concurso de Miss Universo. La igualdad. La ignorancia en cuanto a las diferencias. La religión, acabar con las "guerras santas", qué irónico. La pobreza. El trabajo realizado por niños/su tráfico/su esclavitud. 15. Algo que no puedas soportar... Cuando no se agradecen las bendiciones. 16. ¿Qué consejo le puedes dar a algún artista que se sienta desanimado con su carrera y esté pensando en darse por vencido? Para empezar, la desesperanza proviene de no ser productivo. Así que si te sientes sin esperanza es porque no tienes una meta que estés buscando alcanzar. Lo importante no es el éxito sino el recorrido. Si estás trabajando fuerte, el éxito llegará y ¿entonces qué? Querrás más. Así que disfruten el recorrido, disfruten lo malo porque sus lecciones los preparan para lo bueno, levántense cuando fallen porque serán más altos cuando tengan éxito. Excitement arises as I approach Natalie Cole’s home. It is not an everyday occurrence to interview a living legend. After several decades in the music industry with its ups and downs, she is tireless and has had extensive highlights in her career. I wait for her to come down and I am welcomed by her warmth. She is kind and friendly and we sit down to chat more casually than is customary in a celebrity interview. She radiates compassion, a feeling that as she later mentioned arose as a result of her health struggles in the past years. She will tell you proudly and with a smile that the organ she needed was donated to her by a Latino family. You can think that metaphorically she now feels the Latin rhythms inside her. Hence her musical renaissance with a new album in Spanish where she collaborates with artists like Juan Luis Guerra and where “Acércate Más,” sung as a digital duet with her father, Nat King Cole, will melt your heart. Cole sings in Spanish with a soulful passion that is felt in every tune. She recalls as a child when her father took her to a market in Mexico where she experienced a magical world at the plaza or mercado: “It was all so beautiful to me. My father loved Mexico and Latin America and people loved him there.” But why a new record in Spanish? Natalie Cole is quick to answer: “There is something in the culture that is so passionate and alive. After so many years in this business, while creating this album, I found that it was a new cycle for me. Latin culture is so vivacious and happy.” She also confessed that learning to master her Spanish for her recording sessions was not always easy: “There were days when I thought I would not be able to do it, but I kept at it and then suddenly it started to make sense.” Would she do it again? “Actually,” she replies with a smile, “I would love to sing more and more in Spanish and all the different genres such as bachata and mariachi music.” She seems to have a new-found love: Spanish Music!

Step # 3: Transform your daily NO habit to a YES habit. Think and say YES instead (even say it aloud!) to build your YES! muscle. Especially say YES to the hurdles and challenges seeing them as opportunities. The more you say it, think it and believe it, the closer you get to manifesting your dream. Step #4: Expand that YES habit to affirmations-- Simple, positive, sentences that keep tapping you on the shoulder and whispering in your ear to keep your dream charged like a battery in a phone. Like, "I love my new job" or "I love my new life in …." or "I am in a happy, loving, sizzling relationship." Or simply, "I'm in love." Step #5: Now that you're living in a YES attitude, and you've activated your YES Frequency, it's time to take action. Action is critical. When you're walking through life in a YES state, it acts like a powerful magnet to manifest your dreams. You start to attract the right people and opportunities to help you get what you want. When those people and opportunities appear, you must take steps to integrate them into your dream plan. Remember, just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes more than just YOU to make your dream(s) come true. It's a team effort! But you have to lead the team! And you do that by taking action. The biggest reason dreams don't come true is that we get overwhelmed and we give up too soon. The key is to break down the journey into small steps. See yourself taking one step at a time, each acting as a YES motivator, inspiring and energizing you to take the next step and the next all the way to your dream destination. Your dream may even change and morph into something different (even better!) than you first imagined. Stay open. Say YES. Paso 2: Elimina (o reduce considerablemente) las respuestas con NO. Acostúmbrate a no decir que NO. Cuando siempre piensas o dices NO, encontrarás más NO en tu vida, reduciéndola a un estado de insatisfacción, infelicidad y, por qué no decirlo, aburrimiento (por supuesto que hay ocasiones en las que tienes que ser listo, protegerte y decir que no). Paso 3: Transforma tus hábitos diarios y pasa de decir NO a decir SÍ. Piensa y di SÍ (incluso en voz alta) para ejercitar tu músculo del ¡SÍ! Sobretodo di SÍ a las adversidades y retos y conviértelos en oportunidades. Cuanto más lo digas, pienses y creas, más cerca estarás de realizar tu sueño. Paso 4: Expande el hábito de decir que SÍ usando afirmaciones: oraciones sencillas y positivas que te dan palmaditas en el hombro y te susurran al oído que mantengas tu sueño bien cargado, como la batería del teléfono. Por ejemplo, puedes decir: “me encanta mi nuevo trabajo”, “me encanta mi nueva vida en…” o “estoy en una relación feliz, amorosa y vibrante”. O simplemente: “Estoy enamorado”. Paso 5: Ahora que estás viviendo con la actitud del SÍ y has activado la frecuencia del SÍ, es hora de entrar en acción. La acción es crucial. Cuando vas por la vida en un estado de SÍ, se activa un poderoso imán que realiza tus sueños. Empiezas a atraer a la gente adecuada y a las oportunidades que te ayudarán a conseguir lo que quieres. Cuando esas personas y oportunidades aparecen, debes tomar los pasos necesarios para integrarlos en tu plan soñado. Recuerda, al igual que se necesita un pueblo entero para educar a un niño, TÚ sólo no vas a poder convertir tus sueños en realidad. ¡Es un esfuerzo de equipo, que tienes que liderar tú! Y se lidera pasando a la acción. El motivo principal por el que los sueños no se convierten en realidad es porque nos sentimos abrumados y nos damos por vencidos demasiado pronto. La clave es dividir el camino en pequeños pasos. Imagínate a ti mismo dando un paso tras otro, cada uno motivando el uso del SÍ, inspirándote y energizándote para dar el siguiente paso, y el siguiente, hasta llegar a tu destino soñado. About Living my Dream… Since a young age, I expressed myself through the arts. First, it was singing, acting, but especially writing. I created plays based on Milan Kundera’s book “ The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” and Khahil Gibran writings. I created my own band and speeches about ancient philosophy. There was a beauty in all of it because it was so natural and fearless. I just went for it, no matter how outrageous it was. I wrote my first poetry book at 17, when I immersed myself during the afternoons to read most of the great masters of classical literature. The Essentials of Success… Success is a tricky word because it must embrace so many facets of life. La búsqueda de la perfección para ti… Para mí, tiene que ver con la creación y el autodescubrimiento para convertirme en lo mejor que puedo ser, al tiempo de inspirar a otros a perseguir sus más grandes sueños. Una obra de arte es la búsqueda perfecta de la perfección, dado que siempre es una travesía de autodescubrimiento y transformación. Me encanta la creatividad. Me ha salvado y me mantiene viva. Como Publisher de ALEGRÍA, me fascinan las personas que conozco día tras día, los muchos artistas y visionarios que tienen a Los Ángeles para manifestar sus sueños. Acerca de Vivir mi Sueño… Desde una edad muy temprana, me expresé por medio de las artes. Primero, con el canto, la actuación y, con mayor fuerza, la escritura. Desarrollé obras de teatro basadas en el libro de Milan Kundera “La insoportable levedad del ser” y en escritos de Khahil Gibran. Pude crear mi propia banda y discursos respecto a la filosofía antigua. Había belleza en todo ello porque era tan natural y tan libre de temor. Simplemente me animaba, sin importar lo descabellado que fuera. Nunca me importó lo que la gente pensara de mí. Escribí mi primer libro de poesía a los 17 años, cuando me sumergí durante las tardes en la lectura de la mayoría de los grandes maestros de la literatura clásica. El arte fue mi manera de hacer frente a la dificultad y a los retos en mi vida. Fue mi antídoto. Una vez que llegué a California y conseguí un título en las artes, el teatro y luego el periodismo, todo empezó a complementar mi visión artística global. Vivir mi sueño es mi AHORA. Donde quiera que esté se convierte en el más grande regalo, porque con la vida tenemos esperanza. Lo básico para el éxito… El éxito es una palabra difícil porque debe englobar – en mi opinión- un híbrido especial e inusual –uno que no sólo brinde reconocimiento en el propio campo de trabajo, sino además el apoyo y el amor de los demás y, lo más importante, una vida llena del equilibrio entre familia, salud y relaciones de calidad que todos deseamos obtener. Mi éxito ideal sería una sensación espiritual de bienestar al sentir que cumplir una meta por una causa más grande que mí misma y alguien especial con quien siempre compartirla. La clave para la búsqueda de los sueños… Creo que cada uno de nosotros tiene una travesía individual, pero hay elementos esenciales que son clave: autodescubrimiento y autoconocimiento, obtener una educación, ser un estudiante de la vida, vencer el temor, contar con perseverancia inquebrantable, conectarse con las personas a nivel genuino y tener un entusiasmo contagioso por la vida. ¡Creo que estos ingredientes se llevarán de manera natural a vivir tu sueño!

I know he has a big following in the Latin indie music scene, and out of artistic curiosity, I drive to see him perform on one of those personal artist’s dates I give to myself from time to time. Leonel Miguez walks on stage, grabs the mic and Boom…. The magic begins. His voice is raw and seductive and his presence on stage gives him a star quality that I know will make him become one of the new best voices in the Rock in Español scene. It is just a matter of time. Believe me. His Album Vicios de mi Alma is a masterpiece; song by song the artist explores the unending tonalities of love, heartbreak, nostalgia and personal redemption through poetic and seductive lyrics and melodies that will have you singing to the lyrics before you know it. I had my favorites by the end of the evening: “Corazones Rotos” and “La Bruja.” 40 minutes later, I had become a devoted fan of his music. I got to interview him at his house in Huntington Beach to share with our readers a little more about this new artist.
1. How do you describe your music genre? My music is placed in the Rock/Pop en Español category and by connecting with certain people I have found a comfort level there. I feel my song writing is story telling with simple musical chords.

Sé que tiene muchos seguidores en la escena musical indie latina así que, por curiosidad artística, manejo para verlo actuar en una de esas citas personales con artistas que me regalo de vez en cuando. Leonel Miguez sube al escenario, agarra el micro y… ¡bum!, comienza la magia. Con su voz áspera y seductora y su presencia en el escenario que le confiere calidad de estrella, sé que llegará a convertirse en una de las mejores voces de la escena rock en español. Es cuestión de tiempo, créanme. Su álbum, Vicios del alma, es una obra maestra: canción tras canción, el artista explora las infinitas tonalidades del amor, el desamor, la nostalgia y la salvación personal a través de letras y melodías poéticas y seductoras que te harán corear las canciones casi sin darte cuenta. Al final de la velada ya tenía mis favoritas: Corazones rotos y La bruja. Después de cuarenta minutos y una cerveza, ya me había convertido en fiel devota de su música. Fui a entrevistarlo a su casa en Huntington Beach para compartir con nuestros lectores un poco más acerca de él. 1. ¿Cómo describes tu género musical? Mi música se encaja en la categoría rock/pop en español y me encuentro cómodo conectando con este tipo de público. Siento que mis letras son historias con acordes musicales simples.
2. ¿Cuándo descubriste que la música sería tu vida? 2. When did you discover music would be your life? My parents say I discovered it at a young age, at around 5. I was always very musically inclined, playing air guitar with my tennis racquet and singing, but I recall singing in my grandmother’s house to my aunts and cousins at the age of 12. My first song was CARITO… never really got the hang of it, but I thought I did back then! haahaha.
3. Tell us about your upbringing? Where do you come from? How long have you been in the USA? I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am the oldest of three. My family is very close and when my parents decided to migrate to the USA in 1990, we left all together and our destination was Queens, NY where we lived for 13 years. Those times were really hard and music
Mis padres dicen que la descubrí muy joven, a la edad de cinco años. Siempre tuve predilección por la música, y cantaba y usaba mi raqueta de tenis como si fuera una guitarra. También recuerdo que les cantaba a mis tías y primos en la casa de mi abuela cuando tenía doce años… mi primera canción se titulaba Carito… no era muy bueno pero en aquel entonces pensaba que sí, ¡jajajaja!
3. Cuéntanos algo sobre tu niñez y adolescencia. ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en los Estados Unidos? Nací en Buenos Aires, Argentina, y soy el mayor de tres hermanos. Tenemos vínculos muy fuertes en mi familia y cuando mis padres decidieron emigrar a los Estados Unidos en 1990, nos marchamos todos juntos a nuestro nuevo destino en Queens, NY, donde vivimos durante 73
for me became my escape and my best way to vent my feelings. I went to Bayside High School where Music and Art are Majors. However, in this school, ironically I got kicked out of band for my inability to read music. Haha… There I started my first band and have never stopped playing to this day. 4. What brings you ALEGRIA? Life has truly been a school for me. I find Alegria in practically anything, but if I had to narrow it down to a few things, creating is my biggest joy, either in the studio with the band, or in my room with my guitar, paper and pencil. Painting, taking pictures, writing poems or stories, all types of creating fuel my soul.
5. How has being a bilingual and multicultural artist impacted your career? It is a huge advantage to be bilingual, but at the same time, it causes an inner battle as to which direction to go without confusing my fans. People have a tendency to analyze everything. For instance, if I do a song in English, they feel I am trying to do a cross over, or if I sing in Spanish sometimes my roots are not “tropical” or “Latin” enough; therefore, it works great as a fresh sound but I must work harder to make them really listen, not just tap their feet or shake their ass. In the end, the truth is that I have spent more time living in the US than anywhere else. I speak, read, talk and feel in two languages, so as a result I express myself with what comes natural at the moment. Anglos are more open minded and bigger consumers of new music proposals, but Latinos, as judgmental as they are, become lifetime fans. 6. Who would you like to collaborate with in the music world? Let me roll out the list! Ha ha! My idols are constantly changing as I get older. Draco, Calamaro, Andres Cepeda, Warren Hynes, Clapton, Petty are all on the list, and for females I would love to do a song with la Guzman, who has bigger balls than the majority of male singers from the “Rock in Español” bands! Ha ha! 7. Tell us about your upcoming projects and tours? Being an Independent Artist is a double edged sword: you have the ability to do what you like and go in any direction you please, but also sometimes it is hard to keep your focus. I m working on an acoustic album in Spanish, I want it to be as crude as I write, just guitar and vocals. I have an English project called “Traveling Fools” and if things go as planned, I will release the first album at the end of 2013 with that band. My next concerts will be July 13 in Sacramento (Fiesta en la Calle). I am preparing two shows for August with EL LEON (my old band). They will be in New York and California. And in September, I leave for Colombia for a 3 week tour to present the video of “La Bruja” from my album “Vicios de mi Alma”.
13 años. Aquella época fue muy difícil y la música se convirtió para mí en una vía de escape y la mejor manera para desahogarme. Asistí a la escuela secundaria de Bayside, donde se podía estudiar música y arte pero irónicamente me expulsaron de la banda porque no sabía leer las partituras. ¡Jajaja! Así que empecé mi primera banda y desde entonces no he parado de tocar. 4. ¿Qué te trae ALEGRÍA? La vida me ha enseñado mucho y encuentro Alegría en prácticamente todo, pero si tengo que ser específico, crear es lo que me da más felicidad, ya sea en el estudio con la banda o en mi habitación con la guitarra, papel y pluma. Pintar, hacer fotos, escribir poemas o historias… crear me alimenta el alma.
5. ¿Cómo ha influido en tu carrera ser un artista bilingüe y multicultural? Ser bilingüe te abre muchas puertas pero a la vez es una batalla interna porque tienes que decidir qué dirección tomar sin confundir a los fans. La gente tiende a analizar todo: por ejemplo, si hago una canción en inglés, piensan que quiero pasarme al otro lado, o si canto en español, a veces mis raíces no son lo suficientemente “tropicales” o “latinas”. Funciona muy bien al ser un sonido fresco, pero a la vez tengo que trabajar mucho más duro para que escuchen de verdad y que no se limiten a seguir el ritmo con el pie o las caderas. Al fin y al cabo, la verdad es que paso más tiempo viviendo en los Estados Unidos que en ningún otro sitio. Hablo, leo y siento en los dos idiomas y, por lo tanto, me expreso con la lengua que me sale de forma más natural en cada momento. Los anglos son más abiertos de mente y consumen más música nueva, pero los latinos, por otro lado, aunque sean más críticos, se convierten en fanáticos de por vida.
6. ¿Con quién le gustaría colaborar en el mundo de la música? Déjame que saque la lista, ¡jajaja! Mis ídolos cambian constantemente según pasan los años. Por ejemplo, por nombrar sólo a algunos, Draco, Calamaro, Andrés Cepeda, Warren Hynes, Clapton, Petty… Y en cuanto a voces femeninas me encantaría hacer una canción con la Guzmán, ya que tiene más huevos que la mayoría de cantantes masculinos de bandas de rock en español. ¡Jajaja! 7. ¿Nos puedes contar tus próximos proyectos y actuaciones? Ser un artista independiente es un arma de doble filo: tienes la posibilidad de hacer e ir en la dirección que quieras, pero a veces es difícil mantenerse enfocado. Ahora estoy trabajando en un álbum acústico en español, que quiero que sea tan crudo como mis letras, sólo guitarra y voces. Tengo un proyecto en inglés titulado “Traveling Fools” y si todo sale como planeado, estrenaré el primer álbum a finales del 2013 con esa banda. Mi próximo concierto será el 13 de julio en Sacramento (Fiesta en la Calle) y estoy preparando dos espectáculos en agosto con El León (mi antigua banda) en Nueva York y California. Y en septiembre me marcho a Colombia para hacer una gira de tres semanas y presentar el video de La bruja de mi álbum Vicios de mi alma.

’m running about 20 minutes late as I make my way up the inconspicuous stairs. The stairs ultimately lead me to an even more inconspicuous room with a beautiful woman dressed in a perfectly short cocktail dress. She stands behind a desk next to a large armoire. She welcomes me, opens the doors to the armoire and moves the hanging clothes aside. I quickly step through and make my way into La Descarga Rum Bar. I arrive at the cigar lounge downstairs and immediately hear what sounds like my UCLA professor (and artistic director of the L.A. Theater Center) Jose Luis Valenzuela yell out in his thick Chicano accent, “C’mon you guys, you can’t be late all the time.” I turn and find Hugo Medina sitting at a table in the corner of the room. I walk over to him, we exchange a warm hug and sit across from each other. Hugo keeps mimicking and speaking like Jose Luis. “Well, I ordered you a Zaya and coke but it’s now watered down because, you know, you got here late.” The imitation is flawless, the demeanor, the accent and voice are frighteningly similar and the more I laugh, the more he keeps going. Realizing he’s in the zone and without warning, he transitions into an even more hilarious imitation of Jose Luis’ daughter and then proceeds to play out a conversation between them, switching seamlessly from one to the other.

My friendship with Hugo spans 14 years since theater school at UCLA. Preparing for this interview, I realized how much I take everything I know about my best friend for granted. His generosity, his deep opinions about life (especially after a few

Una bonita mujer, vestida a la perfección con un traje corto de cóctel, se encuentra detrás de un mostrador, al lado de un gran armario. Tras darme la bienvenida, abre las puertas del armario y mueve la ropa que está colgando a un lado. Rápidamente atravieso el armario y entro a La Descarga Rum Bar. Llego al salón de puros de la planta baja y de inmediato oigo al que suena como mi profesor de la UCLA y director artístico del L.A. Theater Center, José Luis Valenzuela, que grita con su fuerte acento chicano: “¡Vamos, no pueden llegar siempre tarde!” Me doy la vuelta y veo a Hugo Medina sentado en una mesa en la esquina del local. Me dirijo hacia él, nos abrazamos de forma cálida y nos sentamos uno al frente del otro. Hugo sigue imitando y hablando como José Luis: “Bueno, te pedí un ron Zaya con refresco de cola pero ya se ha aguado porque, bueno, has llegado tarde”. La imitación es perfecta y la forma de moverse, el acento y la voz son de lo más similar y cuanto más me río, más imita. Me doy cuenta de que se encuentra en su salsa y, sin avisar, cambia a otra imitación aún más graciosa de la hija de José Luis y empieza a actuar una conversación entre los dos, saltando sin ningún problema entre uno y otro.

drinks), his immense drive to passionately pursue what he loves, his integrity, his brutal honesty, his extreme fear of being stuck in the “comfort zone” that ultimately leads to what he calls “an uninteresting life.” Hugo has fought against this comfort zone for much of his life. He consistently challenges himself in all areas of his life; in his craft, spiritually and in relationships. Early on in his career came a point where he was struggling to keep his acting career alive, but it wasn’t moving in the direction he wanted. Nothing was falling into place. At one point he became so overwhelmed he literally collapsed in sheer depression. This moment solidified the true brutality of this business like no other time before. It also taught him one of the biggest lessons in his life; to relentlessly continue to pursue his passion and dreams even when the path seems futile. It didn’t take long for Hugo to wipe his tears, put some drops in his bloodshot eyes and push harder to do the work he had set out to do. After his graduation from the UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television, he was selected to be part of the Latino Theater Company’s Laboratory where he was one of the creators and stars in the play Melancholia, which premiered at the Los Angeles Theater Center. He then formed part of the touring company that took the play to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was nominated for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. His desire to perfect his craft and increase his versatility led him to University of California San Diego where he received his MFA in acting in 2011. En un momento determinado, se sintió tan abrumado que entró en una profunda depresión. Este momento solidificó, como nunca antes, la brutal realidad de este negocio. También le enseñó una de las lecciones más importantes en su vida; la de perseguir incesantemente su pasión y sus sueños aun cuando el camino parece infructuoso. No tardó mucho Hugo en secarse las lágrimas, ponerse gotas en sus enrojecidos ojos y esforzarse aún más para hacer el trabajo que quería. Después de graduarse de la Escuela de Teatro de la UCLA, lo seleccionaron para formar parte del Latino Theater Company Laboratory, donde fue uno de los creadores y estrellas en la obra Melancholia, que se estrenó en Los Angeles Theater Center. SECTION TITLE he did what many of his fellow recent grads did: moved to New York City to pursue theater. There he worked on the play Balm in Gilead with producer/writer Beau Willimon (House of Cards, The Ides of March) featuring Michael Shannon (Man of Steel). During his stay in New York, he kept flying back to Los Angeles to film projects offered to him by filmmakers with whom he had established a reputation. He ended up working much more in Los Angeles while he was living in New York. In addition to a growing network, he also had his close friends and family in L.A.; the move back home was organic and an easy choice. Hugo has been steadily working since his return. He has been in numerous prime time TV shows, independent films and theater. Recently, he has filmed the feature film Vincent & Luzy, Lupe Ontiveros’ last film before her passing last year, which will be released in 2014. He has booked a recurring role in the long anticipated FX show The Bridge opposite Academy Award nominee Demián Bichir. He can also be seen in the new season of True Blood on HBO this summer, Sons Of Anarchy and he has recently wrapped April Rain, a feature film directed by Luciano Saber. In addition to solely being an actor, he has begun contemplating taking on the role of producer and collaborator on projects where he can create and play roles that are complex and uncomfortably funny “Like a hit man who happens to have diarrhea,” he quips. He is making reference to the film El Cocodrilo where he was cast to play a hit man opposite Jacob Vargas. After catching up with Hugo, I finally pull out some questions from my pocket which I thought would be interesting to ask, even though I know the answers to most of them. By now, we are on our third rum and coke. Or was it the second? We lost count. It doesn't matter when you're in the moment. Something I learned from Hugo. “OK,” I say and read my first question, “What makes you angry?” Hugo quickly responds, “You do.” We both laugh and I realize that the typical Q&A interview is not going to work for us, so I toss the questions aside. At that moment, a server comes by and asks us in a very interesting dialect if we need anything. I ask him a few questions about the cigars on display and he answers in great detail and then moves on. As soon as the server is far enough from the table, Hugo mimics exactly what he said with astonishing detail. Matching his cadence and mannerisms perfectly. I nod my head in disbelief. I don’t know how he does this, but he has just added another character to his repertoire.

Su deseo de perfeccionar su arte y aumentar su versatilidad lo llevaron a estudiar en la Universidad de California en San Diego, donde recibió su Maestría en Actuación en 2011. Después hizo lo que hicieron muchos de sus compañeros de graduación: mudarse a Nueva York para hacer teatro. Allí trabajó en la obra Balm in Gilead con el productor y escritor Beau Willimon (House of Cards, The Ides of March) protagonizada por Michael Shannon (Man of Steel). Durante su estancia en Nueva York, volaba frecuentemente a Los Ángeles para participar en proyectos de películas que les ofrecían los directores con los que ya había establecido una reputación. Al final acabó trabajando mucho más en Los Ángeles mientras que vivía en Nueva York. Con una red de contactos que continuaba incrementándose, sus amigos más cercanos y su familia en Los Ángeles, su regreso a casa fue una decisión natural y fácil de tomar. Después de ponernos al día de nuestras cosas, por fin saco algunas preguntas de mi bolsillo que pensé serían interesantes de preguntar, aunque ya sabía las respuestas a la mayoría de ellas. Ya íbamos por nuestra tercera ronda de ron con refresco de cola. ¿O era la segunda? Perdimos la cuenta, aunque esto no importa cuando estás disfrutando el momento; cosa que aprendí de Hugo. Leo mi primera pregunta: “¿Qué te hace enojar?” Hugo responde rápidamente: “Tú”. Nos reímos los dos y me doy cuenta de que la típica entrevista de preguntas y respuestas no va a servirnos para nada, así que tiro las preguntas. En ese momento llega el mesero y nos pregunta en un dialecto muy interesante si necesitamos algo. Le hago algunas preguntas sobre los puros que tienen expuestos y me responde con gran lujo de detalles. En cuanto termina y se ha alejado lo suficiente de la mesa, Hugo empieza a imitar fielmente todo lo que ha dicho con todo detalle, con la misma cadencia y gestos. Muevo la cabeza con incredulidad. No sé cómo lo hace pero acaba de añadir otro personaje a su repertorio.

ravelling in Italy is like getting in a time machine: in every major city you’ll be catapulted, in no time at all, from one place maybe built some years ago to another one built millennia before. For example, you may find yourself in Rome, sitting at the Opium Café, tasting your favorite drink completely immersed in the ultra-modern style of the room and then decide to go to the Coliseum: this way you would track, on foot, about 2000 years in less than five minutes. To experience the same emotions Marty McFly (the protagonist of the movie "Back to the Future", starring Michael J. Fox in 1985) would have had to set the two dates (74 AD and 2013 AD) in the device positioned within its mythical DeLorean DMC-12 and then hope to find the right fuel to move it; instead you took just a short walk. You will often experience this in the Beautiful Old Country and without any risk of being trapped in a time that does not belong to you.

Italy is really the best place to welcome dreamers, romantics and lovers of life's pleasures, because it knows how to take care of them. Every museum will show the indelible traces of the Italian genius through the works of great artists and inventors who, in past centuries, have been able to shine and, in many cases, become the example to follow for most of the Western world. Every city will tell you the secrets of beautiful love stories of brave knights and beloved damsels. And finally, every restaurateur, every craftsman and every operator of wellness will introduce you to the discovery of new flavors, artifacts or pampering for your body and your soul that you hardly will forget, once back in your country. Each of them will make you allow this country to enter into your heart, just as they did with

To visit the main towns in the Northern Italy, an interesting idea would be to book a hotel in the center of Bologna and then travel to the other cities by train, buying a roundtrip ticket for daily mini trips. You will have a great deal of choice as you can get from Bologna to Milan, Florence, Rimini and Verona in an hour, to Venice in less than an hour and a half, and Modena and Ferrara in twenty minutes. Then you could move and instead stay in Rome, which will take several days to visit and from where you can get to the beautiful Naples by train. You can really find accommodation for all budgets and with so many offers and discounts throughout the year and in all the cities you’ll want to visit. But let's consider in detail, what you might see, hear, taste and enjoy in every city in the North of Italy on a hypothetical trip: Starting in Milan, I should not forget to mention the streets of the city center, especially for fashion lovers. Milan is really “The Fashion” in Italy and in the world, and you will notice not only through the windows of clothing stores located in the so-called "Quadrilateral" (Montenapoleone St., Manzoni St., Della Spiga St. and Corso Venezia), but also observing the look of the men and women at the aperitivo, one of the most important rituals of the local nightlife. There is an unmistakable style, not only in the hands of our famous fashion designers but also in taste and personal ability of the Italians who know how to choose the most appropriate clothing to wear. Many times, in New York and Los Angeles, I have heard that it is easy to recognize Italians at first sight, especially by the way they dress. Very often I find myself harshly criticizing my country and envying,

Para visitar las ciudades principales del norte de Italia, una idea interesante sería la de reservar hotel en el centro de Bolonia y realizar miniviajes en tren a otras ciudades, comprando boletos de ida y vuelta en el día. Tendrás muchísimo donde elegir ya que, desde Bolonia, se puede llegar a Milán, Florencia, Rímini y Verona en una hora, a Venecia en menos de hora y media, y a Módena y Ferrara en veinte minutos. Después puedes mover tu base a Roma, que tardarás varios días en ver y desde la que puedes llegar, en tren, a la preciosa Nápoles. Se puede encontrar alojamiento para todos los bolsillos y existen muchas ofertas y descuentos a lo largo del año en todas las ciudades que quieras visitar. Pero veamos en detalle lo que podrías ver, oír, paladear y disfrutar en cada una de las ciudades principales del norte de Italia en el siguiente viaje hipotético: Empezando en Milán, no nos podemos olvidar de las calles del centro de la ciudad, sobre todo para los amantes de la moda. among other things, the strong organizational skills of American society, however, I must admit that the field of fashion, although futile and superficial, is something I'm proud of. Milan is the city for those who dream of a “New York City”, well represented by the words of the song “Milano” written by Alex Britti: "with fashion always celebrating itself, with people who work too much and always a strange atmosphere of conquest; with taxis always angry and tourists a bit in a hurry … ” The romantics should not miss Venice and Verona. Easily reachable by train, they will give you landscapes and emotions you’ll hardly forget. Venice then, was the birthplace of Giacomo Casanova – the classic emblem of the Italian male archetype that I would describe as a "romantic and versatile rogue" – well represented in the 2005 film starring the unfortunate Oscar winner Heath Ledger (Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, 2009). The couples will love the gondola ride, the typical Venetian boat, which will take them to see places difficult to reach by land and where they can exchange unforgettable kisses. And, once they arrive in Piazza San Marco, they will remain enraptured not only by a breathtaking view but also by the beauty of the cathedral. Verona then will impress not only the "hit by Cupid" –you cannot miss a visit to the apartment and balcony of Juliet (the famous lover of Shakespeare's tragedy) – but also lovers of classical music. Seeing an opera at the Arena of Verona is one of those experiences that I suggest not only to tourists but also to all Italians. Being an outdoor event, it is available only during the summer, but believe me, it will be another experience which will fill you completely and you will always remember. You will be fascinated by the colors of the costumes, by the imposing sets and the Arena, by the bright lights of the show that will take turns to that of the stars, up to the music played by a live orchestra and the melodious voices of talented singers..

Y una vez que lleguen a la Plaza de San Marcos, quedarán embelesados por las impresionantes vistas y la belleza de la catedral. s a chubby adolescent with spaced teeth she was used to people laughing in her face every time she mentioned her desire to enter the world of acting and television. As an adult, against the wishes of her father, equipped with the appropriate body measurements and the girl next door-look, she went on to compete as Miss Caguas at the Miss Universe Puerto Rico contest. She was determined to be crowned as the most important representative of beauty in her country; one of the countries with most Miss Universe crowns. She came well prepared, believing in her motto “If she can, why can´t I?” and with a huge dream: a recurring dream, where, dressed in red, she was crowned under falling confetti to celebrate the triumph for which she had been preparing for a long time both outside and on the island. EL: What led you to participate in beauty contests? MM: I don’t feel that I am the most beautiful, far from being perfect, but it is a platform to show who I am. Many of the girls are very beautiful but also well-rounded; not all of us are what people think, a pretty face with nothing inside the head. It was a stepping stone for reaching my goals. I have goals that are quite realistic even though I have always been very much of a dreamer. (She is smiling while daydreaming.) I know that I am not perfect; I know my defects and I know how to use them to my advantage. EL: What recommendations would you give to girls who want to participate in contests like this?

e adolecente era gordita y con los dientes separados, acostumbrada a que se rieran en su cara cada vez que mencionaba su deseo por incursionar en el mundo de la actuación y la televisión. De adulta y en contra de la voluntad de su padre, con medidas que pasaban los “requisitos” impuestos por la sociedad y su look de “the girl next door” llegó representando a Caguas a Miss Universe Puerto Rico, dispuesta a coronarse como la máxima representante de la belleza de su país, uno de los países con más coronas universales. Bajo el brazo llevaba su preparación, su lema “si ella puede, ¿porque yo no?” y un gran sueño, un repetido sueño donde, vestida de rojo, le ponían una corona mientras caía mucho confeti para celebrar el triunfo por el cual se había preparado tanto tiempo fuera y dentro de la isla. EL: ¿Qué te llevó a incursionar en los concursos de belleza? MM: No me siento la más bella, ni mucho menos perfecta, pero es una plataforma para mostrar quién yo soy. Muchas de las chicas son muy bellas pero también muy completas, no todas somos lo que se piensa, una cara bonita sin nada en la cabeza. Era un escalón para alcanzar mis metas. Tengo metas bien realistas aunque siempre he sido muy soñadora. (Sonríe y sueña despierta.) Sé que no soy perfecta, sé cuáles son mis defectos y los sé usar a mi favor. EL: ¿Qué recomendaciones les darías a las chicas que quieren participar en concursos como estos? MM: Tienes que estar preparada para lo que dirán de ti. Porque van a hablar. Caminar en un traje de baño para que te califiquen no es tarea 90

MM: You have to be prepared for everything they say about you. Because they will talk. It is not an easy task to walk in a bathing suit while being judged. But it is interesting, how you will learn to know what kind of woman and human being you are in these competitions, to know what you are capable of. Besides, you make beautiful friendships with women who, just like you, have many goals. It was important for me to be as well prepared as possible; in this profession one is never completely prepared. EL: Do you believe it was your preparation or luck that led you to receive the first exclusive contract to become an on-air personality with Galavisión? MM: Anything can be achieved with effort. An opportunity came up at a moment when I was prepared to receive it and I grabbed it. I am very grateful for it, since it helped me in making many dreams a reality. Being the host of my own program gave me the chance to meet many artists whom I admired. EL: You did exclusive interviews with different artists, especially during the time of the awards ceremonies for Latin music. Is there anyone who made you turn from an interviewer into a fan? MM: To meet Olga Tañón was the coolest. I was her fan when I was young: I would sing and dance to her songs. It was something very special to develop a friendship with many of them who then have been of great help at times. I did not expect it, I don´t feel special, I feel blessed. EL: Before having your own program, you were part of “El Gordo y La Flaca,” “Despierta América” and other programs at Univisión, where you had a contract (of which we will talk in a moment). One thing led

Además, haces muy lindas amistades con mujeres, que al igual que tú, tienen muchas metas. Para mí era importante estar lo más preparada posible y en esta carrera nunca se está completamente preparada. EL: ¿Crees que fue la preparación o la suerte la que te llevó a ser el primer talento exclusivo de Galavisión? MM: Todo se puede lograr con esfuerzo. Fue una oportunidad que se presentó cuando estaba preparada para recibirla y la tomé, por la que estoy muy agradecida pues logré hacer muchos sueños realidad. Ser la presentadora de mi propio programa me permitió conocer a muchos artistas que admiraba. EL: Hiciste varias exclusivas con diferentes artistas, especialmente durante las temporadas de premiaciones a la música latina. ¿Hay alguien que te obligó a dejar de ser entrevistadora para ser fan? MM: Conocer a Olga Tañón fue lo máximo, era su fan desde chiquita: cantaba y bailaba sus canciones. Fue algo muy especial hacer relaciones de amistad con muchos de ellos quienes han sido en su momento de mucho apoyo. No me lo esperaba, no me siento especial, me siento bendecida. EL: Antes de tener tu propio programa fuiste parte de “El gordo y la flaca”, de “Despierta América” y otros programas en Univisión, donde ganaste un contrato (del que hablaremos en un momento) y uno te llevó al otro, y el otro al próximo, y así por casi cuatro años. ¿Qué te hizo venir a la meca del cine teniendo un futuro asegurado en la televisión de habla hispana? MM: Como a los 15 o 16 años me dije, voy a vivir en Los Ángeles y voy a trabajar en el mundo del entretenimiento en inglés. Me encanta bailar, cantar, pero mi fuerte es la actuación, rama en la que me sigo preparando por eso estoy aquí. Fue una decisión difícil y me di terapia para tomar una decisión y saber cuál era mi próximo paso. Pido muchas señales, tengo mucha comunicación con Dios. Y Él me las dio. Be aware of the signs, they are everywhere. EL: Hablando de señales, ese sueño recurrente en el que lucías ese vestido rojo, te colocaban una corona, y caía confeti, que te acompañó durante MPUR, ¿qué resultados te trajo en el certamen? MM: No gané, quedé entre las finalistas. Fue mejor así, no era mi momento. EL: Cabe recordar que tu vestido durante MPUR era blanco y en la premiación no se acostumbra a tirar confeti. ¿Qué te pasa ocho meses después? MM: En Miami, durante la final de Nuestra Belleza Latina 2008, un diseñador venezolano escogió un vestido para mí. Era rojo y al darme cuenta del color empecé a llorar hasta que alguien de producción me dijo: “Tranquilízate, se te va correr el maquillaje. Ah… y voy a tirar confeti”. (Suspira) Era la conglomeración de todo lo que venía haciendo, ese era mi momento. Esas cosas son las que me hacen sentir segura, y sé que algún día lo que quiero va a pasar. No quiero una vida de “What ifs...?” Tengo un cuadro enorme de la coronación sobre mi cama que le pedí a la producción de NBL, no por vanidad sino porque me recuerda que todo es posible.

MM: When I was something like 15 or 16, I told myself, I am going to live in Los Angeles and I will be working in the world of entertainment in English. I love dancing and singing, but acting is my forte and I continue training in that field that´s why I am here. It was a difficult decision and it took some soul searching to make the decision and to know what would be my next step. I ask for a lot of signs, I have a lot of communication with God. And He gave them to me. Be aware of the signs, they are everywhere. EL: Talking about the signs, the recurring dream where you are dressed in this red dress and they put the crown on your head while the confetti is falling followed you to the Miss Universe Puerto Rico contest. What results did you have in this competition? MM: I did not win; I was one of the finalists. It was better that way, it wasn’t my moment. EL: It should be noted, that your dress in the MPUR was white and in the awards ceremony it is not customary to throw confetti. What happened to you eight months later? MM: In Miami, during the finals of the Nuestra Belleza Latina 2008 contest, a Venezuelan designer chose the dress for me. It was red and when I saw it I started crying until someone in the production team told me: “Calm down, your makeup will run. Ah… and I will throw confetti.” (She sighs.) It was when everything I had been doing came together; it was my moment. It is things like this that make me feel secure and I know that one day, what I want will happen. I don’t want a life of “What ifs…?” 91
EL: Llevas dos comerciales nacionales este año, tienes varios proyectos cocinándose, parece que las señales te están diciendo que estás haciendo lo correcto. Se ve que estás disfrutando el verano que te ofrece la ciudad de Ángeles, ¿verdad? MM: (Sonríe, una sonrisa y una dentadura preciosa, valga mencionar) Soy de una isla muy alegre así que me encanta el verano y el sol. Soy muy activa y me encanta ir hacer hiking al parque Griffith o al Runyon Canyon, tienen unas vistas preciosas. El clima es perfecto para jugar vóleibol o correr en la playa. Hay playas de donde escoger, hay tanto que hacer aquí en esta ciudad. En exclusiva, nos compartió que próximamente saldrá el video musical de su primer sencillo titulado “Ya de ti no quiero nada” al estilo pop rock, que estará disponible en iTunes. Aprovechando, le preguntamos, ¿qué otras metas tiene en mente la también reina de la belleza? EL: You have two national commercials out this year, you have various projects cooking apparently, the signs are telling you that you are doing things right. I come from a very happy island so I love the summer and the sun. I am very active and I love going hiking in Griffith Park and the Runyon Canyon, which have beautiful views. Using this opportunity, we asked her, what other goals the beauty queen had in mind. MM: I want to represent Latinos with dignity and to help change the mistaken vision that there is about us in the English language entertainment industry in the United States. In spite of the fact that we all speak the same language and have more or less the same mix, we are very different in many senses: the music, the traditions, the culture, and the customs. One of my goals is to be able to represent the best of Latina women in every possible way. I would love to participate in a series like “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and, of course, “Dancing with the Stars,” which is another one of my dreams. After all, I love dancing. (She laughs.) EL: Besides dancing, what brings you most alegría? MM: To be with my family and share with them: with my brother, with my godson who is growing and getting more beautiful all the time, with my dad, with my mom. (She tears up.) They bring me alegría, happiness; they are everything. EL: Is this the most difficult part of being here in Hollywood writing your own story? MM: Yes. (She wipes away her tears.) This is a career that requires many sacrifices; sometimes you miss special, important moments, because you are not there. Not being able to share my experiences with my family and friends is something very hard. I know they support me, that they are always watching over me, there is always a text message or something, they are there, and they bring me the reality. I also know that God does not give you more than you can handle. EL: Do you think the sacrifice is worth it? Would you recommend this career? MM: One must look at the positive, and if there is something we don’t like, we must find a way to make changes. And yes, I hope to be able to inspire someone to fulfill their dreams despite of the obstacles and trials. Because anything is possible.
