Welcome to Our Town
here is something for everyone in Borrego Springs. Stop over at one of our campgrounds. Explore some of the attractions in the 100 square miles of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Bring your horses, stay at horse camp, and experience a moonlight ride. We have no signals and no traffic noise. If you prefer not to rough it, we have beautiful hotels and resorts, where you can treat yourself to a relaxing massage, or mani-pedi, relax by the pool, or spend the day playing golf on one of our excellent courses. As the sun sets over the western peak called Rain in the Face, the blue skies take on a glowing hue of pinks, oranges, and reds. As night takes over, a glow appears in the east over Fonts Point, leading you to believe the sun is coming right back. The full moon is rising, or the sky may darken to black as stars begin to emerge and the Milky Way reveals itself in awe-inspiring beauty, accompanied by coyotes calling in the distance or the screech of an owl. It is all here. For the nature-buffs, the possibilities are almost endless. Miles of hiking trails give you a covert look into desert wildlife, riding trails for hours of exploration and even desert tours with
overnight options are available. Some fantastic nighttime sky tours highlight the magnificent display of stars. While you wander about, please stop by the Chamber of Commerce and say hello. We have information to share, maps and pamphlets for your exploring adventures, while you Embrace Borrego.

ur stunning new 14,100 squarefoot county library, which sits on 2.6 pristine acres and is the largest of the San Diego County Library system, is a source of great pride for all Borregans. An architectural beauty and centerpiece in town, it’s situated atop concrete pilings where it’s safe from the flash floods of our Valley. The bright, expansive, beautifully designed interior includes areas of floor-to-ceiling glass walls with meadow and mountain views in every direction. Some locals recommend going to the children’s section for
the best westerly view of Borrego. Others recommend spending time enjoying the large, furnished wrap-around outdoor patio space, which is open to the public 24/7. As important as the library’s physical beauty are the numerous services and activities provided to residents and visitors alike. Popular activities include Saturday matinee movies and documentary movie night, a monthly meditation concert with Tibetan bowls and gongs, weekly Baile Folkorico lessons for children ages 5-10, and a children’s story

Welcome hour. The most utilized services include: use of the Desert Information Section (with locally authored books and videos); the state-of-the-art computer lab; a technology center with 3-D printer; a movie rental section; a teen area and homework center with private study rooms; a 10-week citizenship class offered twice a year, ongoing ESL classes and the frequent use of the 2,215 square-foot community meeting space and 330 squarefoot conference room. Additional services include a high-tech self-service laptop kiosk for day use (one of only two among county libraries), a VetConnect space (saving veterans a trip into San Diego for appointments and paperwork submission), and a partnership with the Health & Human Services Agency to provide for additional community needs on a weekly basis. Locals have also
started a weekly Scrabble Club, a Chess Club, a Book Club, a Robotics Group and more. Not to be forgotten are the adjoining 16.4 acres, which include a community park and a new sheriff’s station. The park features a shaded playground, a “Walk of the Cosmos” (with embedded plaques representing the planets in our solar system), additional trails, areas for picnics, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, an outdoor fitness station, a 100-seat amphitheater, and an off-leash dog park. On warm days, you’ll appreciate parking under the photovoltaic shade structures, which provide a portion of the energy used by the library. This one-of-a-kind library and community park are Borrego Springs treasures and worth a stop if you haven’t yet visited.

Galleta Meadows The Sculptures of Ricardo Breceda And the Vision of Dennis Avery
T
he sight is startling. Something prehistoric. Something mythical. Something otherworldly. Something timeless. Here, in the middle of our desert, is a magical menagerie of free-standing sculptures that will astound you. The gifts of visionary town benefactor Dennis Avery and the craft of sculptor Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures began arriving in April 2008, taking up residence on Avery’s private parcel of land known as Galleta Meadows Estate. The sculptures are easily visible from Borrego Springs Road, north and south. Numbering in the dozens, Breceda’s metal creatures appear almost natural in the desert landscape. Camels, sloths, llamas, wild horses, sabertooth tigers, mammoths, giant birds, wild pigs, sheep, tortoises and,
yes, dragons, seem to coexist in spite of time and rivalries. Breceda’s creations also include sculptural representations of homo sapiens, including Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, who is said to have trekked through this desert on his way to San Francisco. Galleta Meadows is truly a unique and wonderful “find” in our desert community – a must-see for every visitor and resident alike. What to Do
World War Ii MiLItary Helped Open The BorRe
T
he beginning of World War II found the Borrego Valley sparsely populated. The Great Depression had wiped out all but the well-financed homesteaders, but the Navy, Army, and Marine Corps would soon come to this Valley to train men for combat. The Navy was the first to come and was the most active. The Navy had used Benson Dry Lake in Ocotillo Wells as a landing field before the war. When World War II broke out, the Navy bought the dry lake from Mr. Benson for an aerial bombing and strafing target with an emergency landing field. The Navy constructed more bombing targets at Borrego (now Military) Wash, Halfhill Dry Lake and Clark Dry Lake. Armored observer stations were built at Borrego (Military) Wash and Clark Dry Lake. The observer stations at Clark Dry Lake are still standing. The pilots that used the targets came from the Naval Air Station at San Diego, but the targets were maintained by the Navy base at the Salton Sea. In 1942 the Army secured a permit to use 400 square miles of the Borrego desert for force-on-force tank maneuvers. Accordingly, the land became known as the Borrego Maneuver Area. The Army paved the Yaqui Pass
18
Road for this mission. Apparently the Army never used the land for tank maneuvers. It did use it for anti-aircraft weapons training and firing and other unknown purposes. Local folklore has Borrego as part of the Desert Training Center, complete with headquarters for General George S. Patton. This most certainly never happened. The Marine Corps trained truck drivers to drive in the desert at night in Borrego. They had to learn to drive in tight convoys in blackout conditions. Ensign Ranch was used as a bivouac area. Every Friday, trucks would bring new trainees. If a driver passed the course,

y History Rego Valley he got to go back on one of the same trucks. If he didn’t, he got to live in the desert for another week. Few failed. As the war was ending, the military returned the land to its rightful owners with two exceptions. Benson Dry Lake was deeded to San Diego County and it is still used as an unimproved county airport. The Navy retained a bombing range just outside of the Anza-Borrego State Park border, now known as the Carrizo Impact Area. It was used through the Korean conflict. It has since been closed due to the danger of unexploded ordnance (bombs). While the military activity in the Valley surely harmed the delicate ecosystem, the paving of the Yaqui Pass Road made the Borrego Valley accessible to post-war settlers and visitors alike, accelerating the development of the Borrego Springs area and the popularity of Anza-Borrego State Park. There is little left to document the rich military history of the Borrego Valley.

hen you hike or camp with your pet, take a few minutes ahead of time to make sure you’re both prepared. In other words, know before you go. Make sure pets are permitted on the trail or campsite you’re planning to visit. Hiking on designated trails is the best way to stay safe.
Gear Up.
You’ll need a sturdy 6-foot leash, reflective collar and current ID tag on your pet. Bring a collapsible water bowl and plenty of water for both of you, and always bring bags to pick up after your dog. No one wants to see poop on trails!

have for dogs who don’t get out much. Their paws are not used to rough terrain, and may become blistered, cut or burned. Bring a long cable to tether your dog near your campsite, but away from campfires or cooking areas. Make sure your dog can’t get tangled and has access to fresh water and shade. Never leave a pet tethered alone at a campsite.
AppReciate wildLIfe.
If you see a wild animal, even a rattlesnake, let it do its thing without harassment. The chances are it will ignore you. Give a wide berth to let wildlife pass, and continue on your way. Yet another reason to keep dogs leashed at all times-for their safety and yours! Be mindful of your pet’s health, endurance and physical shape. Dogs need to be in shape, just like people. Senior pets may not have the stamina to
BORREGO SPRINGS CHAMBER DIRECTORY & GUIDE 2020
What to Do go the distance. Be realistic about your dog’s ability and desire to hike. Even young dogs who aren’t conditioned for long climbs and outdoor exercise are subject to injury and overheating.
TaKe fRequent bReaks while hiking with pets.
Offer plenty of water, both to drink and to cool down, and check paw pads for stickers, higher risk of heat injury, blisters or bruising.
Watch The Weather.
No matter the season, it’s important to check the weather and trail conditions before you head out — temperatures in San Diego County often range from 70 to over 100 degrees from March through December. The desert offers little to no shade, so if you’re hiking on a warm day it could be dangerous for you and deadly for your pet. Sadly, there have been many heatstroke deaths of dogs while hiking or playing outdoors. Even in perceived “cooler” temperatures, dogs and their people can get overheated. Keeping safety in mind, try to plan outdoor activities during cooler hours or at locations with shade or water nearby.
Dogs can’t regulate their body temperature. They do not sweat to release heat. If it’s hot and you’re hiking with your dog, she might be at risk of brain injury or death from a combination of heat exposure and physical exertion, even if drinking water along the way.
Remember, never leave your dog in a car!
Be extra sensitive with breeds like pugs, boxers and bully breeds, long-haired dogs, senior pets and out-of-shape pets. They are at higher risk of heat injury due to their physiology, breathing capacity, age, or previous illness. Watch for signs of heat stress in your pet: rapid panting, disorientation, stumbling, red paws, drooling, vomiting, or lethargy. If your dog has become overheated, immediately ask or call for help. Move him into the shade and apply cool — not cold — water all over his body to lower body temperature. Apply cool packs or cold towels to your pet’s head, neck and chest. Let him drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. We have no veterinarian. Call 911 immediately!

What to Do
Desert Safety Carry Water And Drink It.
Saving your water for the hike back has led to death in Anza-Borrego. Drink plenty of water before you leave home, while you hike, and on the return route. If you feel thirsty, it is already too late. Drink lots of water and drink often.
MaKe suRe your Vehicle is desert Ready.
Equip your vehicle for the desert. You should always carry extra water, a shade tarp, a shovel, a tire pump, and extra food.
Leave SnaKes Alone.
Many venomous snakes live in the desert. If you threaten them, they may strike. It is illegal to harass, catch, or kill any snake within Anza-Borrego. If bitten, remain calm and seek immediate medical attention.
Do not spLIt up the group.
Stay together. Never leave anyone behind to rest.
22
PRepaRe YouRSelf.
In addition to carrying water, you should have protective clothing, sunscreen, a hat, a good map, food and a first aid kit that includes a comb and tweezers.
Have A Plan.
Leave all your trip information with a friend. Tell him/her your destination, the route you intend to follow, your expected return time, a description of your vehicle with license plate number, and the time by which he/she should notify park authorities in case you do not return.
When Emergencies Happen:
Stop. Stay calm. Seek shelter. If you are with your vehicle, remain there; do not leave it. Signal with mirrors, white cloth, whistle (three short blasts on a whistle, pause, then three more, repeat frequently), and put your hood up. It is much easier to find a vehicle in the desert than a person!!!
DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON TRAILS OR TOURS.

or anyone who loves birding or thinks they might, Borrego Springs and the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park offer exceptional bird-viewing opportunities. Borrego’s range of elevations,

from close to sea level to 6,200 feet in the mountain peaks, create a great diversity of habitat that supports a wide range of birds. In fact, it is estimated that more than 300 species of birds can be found in Borrego and Borrego’s surrounds. Most of these birds, like the Swainson’s Hawk or the Wilson’s Warbler are migratory, while others like the Gambel’s Quail and the Greater Roadrunner are year-round residents.

The Art Scene In BorRego
he Art Scene in Borrego is not just alive and well, it’s flourishing. Three long established non-profits support art, art events and art education in Borrego raising funds for the community’s children and scholarships for Borrego’s graduating seniors. The Borrego Springs Art Guild was formed in 1972 and while its activities have changed, its purpose to support community art has not. From November to April and on the second Thursday of each month, the Guild holds a luncheon (currently at Rams Hill) that includes an artist’s presentation or demonstration of their special art form. It also provides members with opportunities to sell their art at multiple events including their 45th Annual Art Festival on January 18, 2020. Contact the Guild at bscaartguild@ gmail.com for information. BASIC was formed in 1989 by community members seeking to provide Borrego graduates with educational scholarships. To fund the scholarships, they developed an event - Circle of Art – a juried fine art show which celebrates its 31st year on March 14-15, 2020.
Nearly 70 artists present their fine items at Christmas Circle including painting, pottery/ ceramics, sculpture, photography, weaving/ textiles, jewelry, metal, mixed media and more. Annually, BASIC produces an art poster to commemorate the event, premiered at the Art Guild’s November luncheon. For more information – www.circle-of-art.org Borrego Art Institute (BAI) is an umbrella of art related activities, seeking to inspire and enrich the community by offering a venue for the public to experience, create, and enjoy all forms of art. Their campus features the Gallery with its rotating art shows and gift shop, a pottery studio and workshop, an ArtFarm garden, a KidsArt program and an on-site restaurant, Kesling’s Kitchen. BAI’s facility is home to various adult and children’s art education classes and multiple events. For more information – www.borregoartinstitute.org

Annual BorRego Springs Film Festival
W
elcome to Borrego Springs for the Annual Film Festival. We have held successful events since 2014, when we began with a modest 22 films shown to the appreciative film fans. Independent filmmakers are coming to our Festival to display their work, to network with other filmmakers and to be introduced and feted in the community. Our Festival is simple to put together. We have one venue, the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center. Consequently, we guarantee an appreciative audience for the films that are chosen to screen during the Festival run. That run is Jan. 16-20. Our festival dates have been near Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday each year since we began. We have an opening night Gala event, a Saturday Party and an Awards session on the final Monday, Martin Luther King’s Birthday,
32
to celebrate the winning filmmaker and their work with our Festival Pass holders. The Festival includes five genres: Narrative Features, Narrative Shorts, Animation, Documentary and Latin films. Individual block showings are available to all to view films of their choice. Films will be listed on the Festival website, borregospringsfilmfestival.org. A People’s Choice Award will be given at the Awards session. Filmmakers interested in the 2021 Festival can visit the Festival website for more information. We are part of a non-profit organization: BORREGO FESTIVALS FOUNDATION, which is part of the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce. Last year 40 filmmakers joined us to both promote their films, network with other filmmakers and enjoy Borrego Springs. Plan

Arts & Artisans ahead. Ticket sales for both block showings and Festival passes will go on sale the Festival website on Dec. 15. Block showing tickets MAY be available if unsold tickets remain at the box office of the Performing Arts Center 10-15 minutes before showings. Come and join us for some fine films and connections with filmmakers at the 6th Annual Borrego Springs Film Festival.

tudents have been a priority for the Borrego Springs Community Concert Association since its founding in 1975. When it began, the Community Concert Association held concerts in the old multipurpose room at the high school. Students could attend at no charge. Beginning in 1999, the Association began the tradition of adding a student outreach concert each season, which is held during the school day and attended by all the students. In 2005, the concerts were moved to the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center. Since 2015, there have been three student programs each season: one for each of the schools (elementary school,
34
middle school and high school). The Association pays for the transportation costs to bus the students to the Performing Arts Center. In 2017, in partnership with The Springs at Borrego RV Park, the Community Concert Association began offering an additional free concert to the community, with a performance for one of the school groups the following day. In the past three years, the Association has also provided an additional Americana-themed concert to one of the schools. The Association is actively engaged with the schools of Borrego to provide and enhance the cultural enrichment of students.

T
he Second Annual Candlewood Arts Festival is a public art festival that takes place consecutive weekends, beginning Feb. 29 and March 1 and closing on March 28 and 29, 2020. The Under the Sun Foundation supports a creative space, both physical and figurative, to encourage people to engage with the arts, our natural environment, and most importantly with one another. This Foundation is the steward of the landmark metal Sky Art sculptures of Galleta Meadows. Inspired by the legacy of Dennis Avery and his love for and commitment to Borrego Springs, the Candlewood Arts Festival includes new, temporary public art in Galleta Meadows as well as projects and events focusing on making art with the diversity that makes us Borrego Springs. Details on projects and artists will be shared via the Foundation’s website, underthesunfoundation.org. We are excited to have people of all ages who visit and live in Borrego Springs engage in new art experiences – making, seeing, thinking and talking about art – in the context of the spectacular natural landscape of the Anza Borrego Desert.

Peninsular Bighorn Sheep
Noble Beasts of BorRego
B
orrego Springs takes its name from the peninsular bighorn sheep that populate Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the north. Borrego is Spanish for “sheep,” but these aren’t the wooly creatures found in children’s fairytales or grazing on farmers’ fields. These noble beasts are at the top of the list for visitors to Anza-Borrego. Listed as a federally endangered species in 1998, peninsular bighorn sheep prefer dry and rocky low-elevation areas. During summer months they are most likely to be seen near sources of water. The rest of the year they can be spotted throughout Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
78
The bighorn sheep are but one of the fascinating animals who call Anza-Borrego Desert State Park their home. Bobcats, mule deer, coyotes, desert kit foxes, mountain lions, black-tailed jackrabbits, desert cottontails, antelope squirrels, and kangaroo rats all can be found in the park along with more than 300 species of birds and 70 species of snakes, lizards, and other amphibians. For more information on exploring Anza-Borrego and Borrego Springs, visit the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association’s Desert Nature Center, 652 Palm Canyon Drive, Borrego Springs, or check out its website at www.abdnha.org. *Source: Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association

The Splendor Of BorRego’s Dark Skies
T
here is nothing quite so hauntingly beautiful as a desert night sky, and few can compare to the absolute magnificence of Borrego’s Dark Sky. Unlike most places on Earth, Borrego Springs enjoys one of the most light pollution-free skies on earth. In 2009, because of the work of the Borrego Springs Dark Sky Coalition, Borrego Springs was awarded a Dark Sky Certification. This recognition is presented by the International Dark Sky Association and makes Borrego the Association’s second place on Earth to
be designated an International Dark Sky Community. Don’t just read about it here. Step outside after dark and just look up. Submerge yourself in the unfathomable darkness. Then marvel at the Milky Way galaxy, the spiral galaxy that is home to our solar system. Its approximately trillion stars stretch across the ebony canopy above, at once dark beyond belief and illuminated beyond possibility. These are the gifts of the Borrego night sky. Cherish them.
