A SUPPLEMENT TO TRIATHLETE MAGAZINE

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

More than 30 years after its birth, the Ironman is yet one of the greatest challenges and accomplishments of the human will...

T

he year 2009 marks the 31st anniversary of the Ironman World Championship and the 27th anniversary of my first race in Kona. So much has changed about the event and the sport of triathlon since that time, yet it is fundamentally the same sporting experience. Back in the day, a large majority of those who jumped into the Pacific on a 141-mile odyssey of self-exploration gave little attention to split times, finish times and overall placing. Rather, the race was akin to skydiving with a parachute that you did not pack. The thought of doing the Ironman was so daunting; you just prepared yourself the best you could, based upon what little you knew about a sport with no history. I remember my first race (1982) like it was yesterday. On a whim I signed up with little concept of what I was getting myself into. Hell, it was only 100 bucks. I could always change my mind. But when the day came, there was no backing out. It was do or die and I went for it. I don’t think I ever contemplated finishing the race, nor did I fathom that it was possible for me, a mere mortal, to do such an outlandish thing. I remember with absolute clarity the defining moment in my triathlon career, in my life, for that matter, when I realized I was going to finish. Darkness was setting in on the lava beds and I was about 10 miles from the finish. I was sunburned, exhausted and drawing on some force within that heretofore I did not know existed. As I ran through an aid station, a Hawaiian woman slapped me on the back with a cold sponge and said, “You got it, you are an Ironman!” It was this moment that changed me and changed the way I look at my life and its challenges forever. Today it is an all-new sport. Thousands of people from all walks of life have completed an Ironman. They ride expensive bikes, have incredible technical apparel and the latest scientific nutritional products. Coaches hone workouts to perfection, guiding the athletes to the best performance they can expect. But come race day, nothing has changed. The raw fear of the test of one’s self remains. The soul-revealing battle against fatigue and doubt in pursuit of the arbitrary but sentimentally invaluable goal of crossing a finish line is the same as it’s ever been. It is irrelevant how trendy or sophisticated the sport has become because the actual event still brings the best, and the worst, out of all who seek the challenge. More than 30 years after its birth, the Ironman is yet one of the greatest challenges and accomplishments of the human will, and no matter how you break it down, everyone who succeeds there is part of a very exclusive fellowship. In this “Road to Kona/Road to Clearwater” special issue you will find a multitude of opportunities to challenge yourself in Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events. All the information you need to choose your own Ironman and Ironman 70.3 dreams is within these pages. The rest is up to you. ▲

The Importance of Recovery Post-Ironman

6 ROAD TO KONA & CLEARWATER ➥ IM QUALIFIERS

A

long with triathlon’s growth comes the demand to qualify for championship races. And perhaps the toughest of those is the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The days of sending in your entry form along with a check and a headshot are long gone. For most of the triathletes going for a slot to the Ironman, the road can be long and rough. Then, once you get it, you have the good and the bad. You qualified—great! That’s the good. Now, after putting just about everything you had into getting there, you have to do it again; that can be the tough part. Hopefully you will be able to take it up a notch or two for the big race. How you approach this challenge in your training is extremely important. Here are a few ways to navigate through the time between qualifying and hitting it again in Kona to help you maximize your race on the Big Island.

RECOVERY IS PARAMOUNT If you earned your priceless slot at Ironman Wisconsin or at Ford Ironman Arizona, for example, you have almost an entire year to gear back up for the challenge. If you earned your slot at Subaru Ironman Canada, the timing is going to be extremely tight with a narrow sixweek window to pull it all together. But first and foremost, before you start thinking about your next long workout, focus on your recovery. Let me emphasize this: If you are not recovered, you will have a very tough time racing well in Kona. Even for those who have a good early season race, get a slot and then have plenty of time to build back up, if you push it too soon you will end up on the start line with the tank only three-fourths full. A topnotch race in Kona requires your energy reserves be filled to the brim and then some … just in case. A few guidelines will help you head into planning your re-entry into training. First, it takes about one day of recovery for every mile that you run hard before physiologically it is wise to push hard again. One experience that is rarely talked about but extremely important is that at about the two-week post-race mark; most people feel really good. However, this is usually a false perception of being truly recovered. The reason is because doing an Ironman takes your energy reserves way down, well below what you experience on a day-to-day basis. At approximately two weeks after the event you have recovered enough to feel much better than you did immediately following your race. But that is because you are comparing to how wasted you were at the finish line. Yet many people take this as a sign that it’s time to start intense training again. Wrong! It really takes about three weeks to assess the damage and to get enough reserve back in your body. This time allows you to build your training up without the risk of being flat when your next Ironman rolls around. There are two factors that are important to take into account as you plan for your next race (Ironman or another qualifier). The first is the muscle damage that needs to be repaired from running a marathon Ironman marathon (assuming you qualified at a full Ironman). The second are those less-tangible things called energy reserves that just take time to recharge, up to three weeks after finishing your qualifying race. There is a litmus test that you can do to give you the green light to go for it or the yellow light that says you may need a little more time: Run for about 40 to 45 minutes. If your muscles feel like they are at mile 20 of the marathon by the end of the run, that is a sign to cool the jets before doing longer or more intensive training. Even if your legs seem OK, but you feel like that 45-minute run was as hard as about an hour and a half should feel, then err on the side of caution and keep active, build another five to seven more days of recovery into your workouts before pushing things up again.

WEEK-BY-WEEK PLAN OF ACTION Week One Post-Ironman. During this week, regardless of when your next race is, the main goal is to move your body just enough to

One experience that is rarely talked about but extremely important is that at about the two-week, post-race mark most people feel really good. However, this is usually a false perception of being truly recovered. help flush the muscles and rid them of all the metabolic waste that accumulated in them during the race. Even if you are done for the season this is extremely important. If you do nothing for a few weeks post-race, all of that gunk in your muscles will turn to cement and the next time you go to exercise your muscles will be tight and lack elasticity. This translates into an injury waiting to happen. There are three exercises that if blended together give the perfect active recovery in week one: easy swimming, easy spinning on the bike and walking. Initially the length of the swim should be about 10 to 15 minutes, the bike roughly 30 to 45 minutes and the walking 10 to 20 minutes. None of the exercises should be done with an attempt to gain or even maintain fitness. If you just did an Ironman you have plenty of that in the bank. Easy means easy. If your heart rate goes over 65 percent of your max you are going too hard, and if it is 50 percent or less is fine. You may want to alternate swimming one day and then cycling the next. Walking can be done just about anytime. Most people do well if they take one day off every second or third day from both swimming and cycling. Near the end of week one of recovery it will be time to jog. Around six to seven days after your race, head out for about 20 minutes, again easy, and see how it feels. If your legs don’t feel fragile, the next run can come the next day and be five to 10 minutes longer. If you feel fragile, hold off another day or two. Generally, two days in a row of running during the first three weeks post-Ironman is plenty. Plan on taking the third day off. Week Two Post-Ironman. At the end of this week you will most likely feel pretty recovered, although it does not necessarily mean that your deeper energy reserves or your body are ready for “real” training. But feeling good is the first sign that your body is coming around. During this week it is important to keep the majority of your recovery workouts short. This can be between 20 and 30 minutes of easy swimming and 45 to 60 minutes easy on the bike as well as a handful of short runs, no longer than 30 minutes. Toward the end of your second week of Ironman recovery, if you have another important race coming up in fewer than eight weeks, it is time to test the systems and see how you feel. This should come in the form of a bike ride that is about two hours, a run of 40 to 45 minutes or a swim of roughly 30 to 35 minutes. If any of these send up a red flag that says you are still tired, listen to that warning and keep things in recovery mode until close to the end of week three. If you feel good and have another big race like Kona or another qualifier in fewer than eight weeks, it might be time to try slotting back into an abbreviated real week of training in week three post-race. Week Three Post-Ironman. By the time week three rolls around you will be pretty well on your way to being recovered. At that point, if you want a real break, it is a good time to take one. If you have a big race looming, this is the time to start putting in normal endurance workouts in each sport toward the end of the week to ensure you do not lose your hard-earned fitness. If you have an Ironman in three to five weeks, do a long ride of around 4.5 to 5.5 hours, a run of about 1:50 to 2:15 hours, and a pool swim of around 3,500 to 4,000 yards. Then in the following week, return to your regular training program for the final tune-up for your next event. If your next race is six to seven weeks out or more, drop those times down just a bit and go closer to 3.5 to 4 hours on the bike, 1:15 to 1:40 on the run and about 2,500 to 3,000 yards in the pool. After that, it’s back to the full swing of training! Keep in mind that getting in shape for your first big Ironman of the year takes much longer than it does for a second go around. You may spend more than 20 weeks building up, doing speed and then tapering down for your first big race. But the next one will use your previous fitness. And to avoid becoming over-trained and flat for the second (or possibly third), it is important to keep all of the phases of your training shorter. If 20 weeks got you ready for your first qualifier,

six to 12 weeks can do it for the second. This should give you the confidence that even if your second peak of the season is done on fewer total weeks of volume and speed, you will most likely show up for your second big race in better shape than ever … if you properly recovered first! See you in Kona. ▲ Mark Allen is the six-time winner of the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. CHOOSING YOUR WEAPONS

CEEPO VIPER CEEPO.COM

W

hat’s the right bike, the right wheelset, the right shoe for your upcoming Ironman or Ironman 70.3? Triathlete editor Jay Prasuhn breaks down the choices you have as a consumer that can help optimize your race experience. Remember the old adage, “Horses for courses”? The same goes for long-distance racing as it does for racecar drivers and marathon runners. Sure, it seems simple: You swim, get on a bike and don shoes for a run. But it’s a hell of a lot more complex. Should you bring your road bike or tri bike to Ironman France? What wheels should you use for Ironman Florida? What to eat, and when? You have many options for how to best optimize your day. Here are some we recommend.

BIKES

Flat/rolling bike course. When the bike course for your race has the word “flat” or even “rolling” anywhere in it, an aero, carbon tri bike is your call. The tri bikes often undergo millions of dollars in aerodynamics testing and have a steep seat angle and a low front end to get you into an aerodynamic position, as well as deep aero tubing throughout the frame.

10 ROAD TO KONA & CLEARWATER ➥ IM QUALIFIERS

Dead-flat courses such as Ford Ironman Florida are tailor-made for these scythes, but rolling courses like Ironman Australia or Ironman 70.3 California, with plenty of flat sections and a few rolling hills, are also optimized on an aero tri bike. Bikes to consider: Felt DA, Ceepo Viper, Fuji D6, Scott Plasma II, Specialized Transition, Blue Triad, Trek TTX, Kestrel Airfoil Pro, Look 595 and Orbea Ordu. Hilly bike course. When the course has more climbing and descending than flat riding (think Ironman France or Ironman 70.3 Monaco), a road bike will serve your hill-climbing sensibilities; a slacker seat angle is more apropos for engaging the hamstrings while on ascents, and a slack-head angle for confident steering while descending. While any standard road bike (outfitted with clip-on aerobars and maybe a seat post that will afford you a more forward position) will answer the call, some brands are adding aero tubing to the equation, making for a bike that will handle like a road bike ought to on the hills, but will afford you a bit of aero advantage for those moments when the road goes flat and you can settle into your clip-on aerobars. Bikes to consider: Cervelo S3, Ridley Noah, Felt AR1and Kestrel Talon

CERVELO S3 CERVELO.COM

Wellington used them all year. Relatively shallow clinchers are still deep with speed. Wheels to consider: Hed Stinger 50, FlashPoint FP60, Mavic Cosmic Carbone, Bontrager Aeolus 5.0 ACC and Edge Composites 68mm Carbon Clincher.

AEROBARS

Fixed. Long, low, flat and aero, the Profile Design Carbon X.5 is the choice of many top pros who have their bike positions locked in. An integrated stem eliminates just one more bolt point, allowing for a fairly seamless aerobar setup. Aerobars to consider: Profile Design Carbon X.5, Vision Tech TriMax Integrated and 3T Ventus.

WHEELS

Windless bike course/experienced triathlete. Here’s the general rule of thumb: The deeper the carbon section on the wheel, the faster it is. Go as deep as a disc in the rear, and you have a wheel that flows wind off it more smoothly than any spoked wheel. But the deep cross section of the Zipp 808 will be one of the fastest non-disc options available. The downside is that wheels like this are more susceptible to crosswinds. So lighter athletes, or those with timid handling skills, may find that what would be a super-fast wheel on a calm day is a detriment on a windy day. They may start to fight the wheel, often stiffening up for handling as they battle crosswind gusts. When the course has more flats than hills, and the weather forecast calls for calm or light winds, deep aero wheels are simply fast. Wheels to consider: Zipp 808, Hed 3Deep and Hed Stinger 90. Windy bike course/novice triathlete. Athletes new to Ironman, those who are timid bike handlers or those who value ease of use and the ease of a clincher will benefit from a wheel with less aero cross section. The familiarity of utility like the Hed Stinger could be a perfect race-wheel choice. The lack of surface area means it’s easier to handle in crosswinds. And if you experience a flat on this wheel the standard alloy clincher rim means that changing a standard tube is much easier (and more economical) than learning how to change tubulars that are glued to the rim. Familiarity with your equipment makes for a much less stressful race. Indeed, the numbers say that shallower aero rims aren’t as fast as the deep ones. But don’t tell Estonian powerhouse and former Ironman Lanzarote winner Ain-Alar Juhanson, who, at the Ford Ironman World Championship last year, used Hed Stinger 50s to record the fastest bike of the day. And reigning Ironman world champ Chrissie

PROFILE DESIGN CARBON X.5 PROFILE-DESIGN.COM

Adjustable. Like the CarbonX.5, the extensions on the Hed ClipLite are length-adjustable. But you also have the ability to adjust your pads vertically, or to use the stem length of your choice. When your bike fitter is still dialing in your optimal fit, the ability to move your cockpit around is a helpful feature, and a clip-on setup is your best bet. Aerobars to consider: Hed ClipLite, Zipp Vuka Clip and Oval Concepts A921 Modular Clip-on. ▲

SHOES

Front-pack runner. For the Ironman or running veteran light on their feet, the K-Swiss K-Ona is a fine choice; it offers just a touch of medial stability for the late run, when your form may start to suffer. It has breathability and drainage for those splashes of water and cola through aid stations. It has a low heel, and it’s light as a feather, helping you stay light on your feet. For race day runners who are looking at three-to-four-hour marathons and who have a mid-to forefoot landing, a light shoe with a low heel is an excellent choice. HED STINGER 50 HEDCYCLING.COM

Mid- to back-of-pack runner. Let’s be realistic; most of us are never going to run a 2:45 marathon like Chris McCormack. We’re destined to heel-strike no matter what the ideal foot position is, and will be on our feet during that marathon or half-marathon course longer than most. So we need a shoe that will support our collapsing arch and tired feet through a tough run, and after a tough bike. Or, we need a shoe with a bit more cushioning to handle a heavier stride. Enter shoes that guide the runner through their gait with ample support. Shoes that offer stability and cushioning will keep your tired dogs from failing you.

Nutrition

Bike fuel. The good ol’ fashioned PowerBar delivers 230 calories in a form that will give you energy as well as help fill your belly. You can supplement it with some gels or other treats on the bike like a Snickers bar to keep your taste buds from going into catatonic shock. The beauty of fueling with a proper sports energy bar during the bike leg is that, given the hours you’re out there turning the cranks, a bar breaks down slowly in your digestive system providing you a sustained source of energy. This will help stave off the dreaded bonk POWER BAR GEL late in the bike. So keep your calo- POWERBAR.COM ries topped off by taking in about 250 calories per hour, with most of those calories coming from a solid form. Run Fuel. When you’re a few miles from T2, that’s when you should have your last bite of a bar. Because when the run comes, you should be considering switching your source of caloric intake from solids to primarily gels. Chewing and swallowing a bar while running is hard enough. But your stomach has a harder job; the act of running requires more blood to keep you moving than biking does. So a bar requiring digestion also shunts blood to the stomach to break down the bar, and thus away from your legs and arms. This is blood your extremities need to keep you cool and keep you moving forward. Gels, on the other hand, are easy to ingest and easy for your stomach to process, shuttling nutrients into your bloodstream much quicker. So find a gel like PowerBar Gel or First Endurance EFS Liquid Shot and test it in your training. Also, look at your next race’s Web page to find out what will be handed out during the race, in case you prefer to bring your own energy gel. Again, a few gummy bears or treats in your special needs bag help prevent flavor fatigue and give you something to look forward to, but rely on the gels for the majority of your caloric intake on the run. ▲

n the days leading up to your big race you will probably check the weather forecast a few times hoping for a perfect day. You have trained hard, eaten well, tapered correctly and now only thing that can get in your way is Mother Nature. When the forecast calls for hot temperatures, you’ll pack your things for race day accordingly. Extreme heat also calls for adjustments to your nutrition and hydration plan and here are some things to consider when do so.

THE HEAT IS ON Extreme conditions such as high altitude or very cold or hot temperatures can affect your nutrition and hydration requirements, however heat and humidity are the most stressful environmental factors on the body. Racing in 90-degree weather is dangerous for all athletes as it can lead to dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. During physical activity body temperature will naturally rise. Sweat is the body’s mechanism for cooling down. When training or racing in hot and humid conditions the sweat does not evaporate as quickly from the skin, and as a result it takes longer to cool down. There is also an in14 ROAD TO KONA & CLEARWATER ➥ IM QUALIFIERS

As the body trains in warmer temperatures the sweat rate adjusts and less sodium is lost in sweat. creased blood flow to the skin and thus less blood and oxygen delivered to working muscles, which can negatively affect performance. It is vital to make the appropriate adjustments to prevent dehydration. We know that during warm weather the body’s internal temperature naturally rises. Similarly, when you eat your internal temperature rises due to the thermic effect of food. If the internal body temperature is already raised from hot weather, you may lose your appetite. It is

important in the days leading up to the race to hydrate well and take in adequate calories. Avoid skipping meals and plan for three meals per day with snacks in between as needed. Fruit and vegetables will provide your body with some of the carbohydrates you need to fuel your race and their water content will also contribute to your increased hydration needs. A fruit salad or a smoothie made with low fat milk or yogurt and ice is a great food choice to include in the days leading up to the race. If possible, it can be helpful to train in warmer temperatures during the weeks leading up to the race. As the body trains in warmer temperatures the sweat rate adjusts and less sodium is lost in sweat. Higher blood-sodium content minimizes problems associated with hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood from over hydrating). Aim for adequate hydration by drinking a minimum of two liters of water per day plus six to 12 ounces during every 15 to 20 minutes of exercise. In addition to water, sodium is one of the primary nutrients of concern in hot and humid weather, so lightly salting your food in the days leading up to the race will help your body hold on to its water. Choosing foods with a higher sodium content such as canned vegetables or salted nuts can be helpful, and sports drinks or electrolyte replacement tablets offer extra sodium as well. Simply paying attention to how thirsty you are is not a good way to estimate your fluid needs. Two hours before the race aim to drink 16 to 24 ounces of fluid. Check to see that your urine is light in color. Dark urine may be indicative of dehydration (however, darker urine may also be the result of taking a multivitamin or supplement or other health issues). During long training sessions weigh yourself before and after. For each pound lost, consume 16 to 24 ounces of fluid. A loss of 2 percent body weight or greater can have detrimental effects on performance, thus proper hydration during the race or training sessions is imperative. Aim to drink six to 12 ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise. Immediately following your training session or race, begin to rehydrate with 16 to 24 ounces of fluid per pound lost. Additionally, 16 ROAD TO KONA & CLEARWATER ➥ IM QUALIFIERS

sodium replacement will maximize rehydration. A salt packet or a salt tablet will provide sodium if you are drinking plain water. Low fat chocolate milk offers the body the carbohydrate and protein that it needs to replete glycogen stores and muscle breakdown and just 16 ounces offer 300 mg of sodium. This is important as we lose approximately 400 to 500 mg of sodium per pound through sweating.

Hot Tips: • Avoid skipping meals in the days leading up to the race as adequate nutrition plays an important role when racing in extreme temperatures. • Acclimating yourself to the climate may prove to be extremely beneficial by allowing your sweat rate to adapt to the high heat. • Hydrate well in the days leading up to the race and include extra salt to prevent hyponatremia. • On race day hydrate in the morning with a sports drink and be sure to get extra sodium. • During the race aim for six to 12 ounces of fluid per 15 to 20 minutes of exercise. • After the event, immediately begin rehydrating with both fluid and sodium as your fluid losses are likely to be higher than usual with the warmer weather conditions. Mother Nature may be a tough competitor, but with the proper nutrition and hydration plan in place, you’ll be prepared and ready to go! Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

FEATURES SWIM

Without a doubt, the most emotionally charged mass swim start in the sport, thanks to TV helicopters, enthusiastic spectators and the sun rising over Hualalai Volcano. With waters a balmy 79 F, wetsuits are not permitted in the single-lap course in Kailua Bay. Currents can be a factor, so a few pre-race practice swims in the bay are advisable.

BIKE

As riders make their way north along the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway, from Kailua-Kona to the turnaround at Hawi, they can be exposed to intense trade winds that buffet much of the exposed western and northern coast of the Big Island. The winds can vary in intensity from steady to heavy blasts that can blow a rider across the road. For this reason, disc wheels are not permitted. The winds can subside during the gradual climb to Hawi. The winds usually pick up again once athletes make their way back to sea level on the Kohala Coast, en route back to T2.

RUN

Finishing the bike is a bittersweet victory. After a draining bike leg, your reward is a very hot marathon. After making it out of T2, runners will wind through town before taking on Ali’i Drive, where spectators will pack the roads. Athletes will then re-trace their steps, climb up Palani Road to the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway to make their way to the Natural Energy Lab. Unless cloud cover or nightfall spares you, anticipate high heat and humidity.

WEATHER

If there is one thing that instantly identifies the Ford Ironman World Championship, it’s the high temperatures and humidity. Though October means crisp air and warm sweaters for much of the country, in Kona, it’s shorts and flip-flop season. Temperatures hover in the 80 F to 90 F range, while the humidity frequently matches those numbers. Sunscreen, hats and proper hydration are all a must on this brutal course.

BIKE SHOP

Boca Hawaii (808-591-9839; Bocahawaii.com), Bike Works at 74-5583 Luhia Street (808-326-2453; Hpbikeworks.com), Cycle Station at 735619 Kauhola Street (808-327-0087; Cyclestationhawaii.com). Bike service will also be available at the Ford Ironman Village during race week.

BEST RESTAURANT

You’ll find many restaurants to choose from during a stroll around Kailua-Kona and Ali’i Drive. Kona is filled with a variety of dining experiences ranging from local, family-style joints to award-winning restaurants, and some of the freshest seafood and sushi one can imagine. Try Lava Java, Huggo’s, the Kona Brewing Company and Kona Inn.

BEST LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

It’s hard to get bored on the Big Island of Hawaii. The area is full of diverse adventures such as swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, historical tours, volcano watching, golf or just plain relaxing. ROAD TO KONA & CLEARWATER ➥ IM QUALIFIERS

MY ROAD

by Andy Potts

KONA I TO

o ot

Ph

never thought I would do an Ironman. It wasn’t until triathlon made its Olympic debut at the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games that I decided to give the sport a try. After 18 years of swimming, I had a relatively late start in the sport. At age 25, I kicked off my triathlon career by competing in a sprint distance. My first race was memorable as I crossed the line behind many people, including men and women twice my age. Nonetheless, I was hooked on the sport. When I turned professional in 2003, I characterized Ironman events as an insane form of masochism. I was only interested in going fast and making the Olympic team. I progressed conservatively through the distances, focusing on draft-legal Olympic distance races for two years, and then adding Olympic distance non-drafting racing in 2005. The following year I added Ironman 70.3 California to my schedule, setting the stage for my long distance career. Since taking up the sport of triathlon, I have had a constant but mysterious pull to Ironman racing; it might be because of the roots of the sport or it might be because of the extreme nature of the distance. Whatever it is, any Ironman athlete can tell you that the lure cannot be ignored. By adding distances and new challenges each year, I have slowly matured into my idea of a complete triathlete, one who can swim, bike and run any distance. As I improved, I embraced the sport more and more. The first non-drafting race of my life, the 2005 Memphis in May Triathlon, was an eye-opener. Progressing from Olympic distance to 70.3 distance was another big step. I learned a ton during my first half-Ironman and I have taken those lessons to heart. Mentally, I tried to break the race up like two Olympic distances but physically it was completely different. I lost a lot of power on the bike after 45 miles and struggled to get into T2. Thankfully, once out on the run, I was fine. Walking away from that experience, I knew I would have to improve on the bike if I wanted to be competitive with the best in the world. One year later at the same race, I had my first 70.3 victory thanks to the four-minute improvement in my cycling. Heading out onto the run in first rather than seventh highlighted my improved understanding of training for and racing the longer distance. Not only was I able to sustain my power for the entire race, my focus never waned either. After winning the Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 in 2007, I put aside my preconceptions and gave Ironman a try. My mentality was that if I was ever going to do an Ironman, why not just start at the top—Kona! Despite being physically twice the distance of a 70.3, the Ironman proved to be much more than twice the challenge mentally. And while I went into Kona with the goal of becoming an Ironman, I walked away with so much more. Moving up in distance has been another way for me to test myself in the sport. I have made sure to enjoy each step of the way and to not move up without fully appreciating my success at each distance. My next big goal is to tackle the Ironman with maximum passion and determination. My experience in Kona epitomizes what I love about triathlon. After racing more than 100 races all over the world, I can say that the atmosphere in Kona was exhilarating and unique. To be successful you need to overcome mental hurdles as well as the obvious physical challenges. There is a distinct energy on the roads of Kona and race day was as emotional for my family as it was for me. Kona was one of the hardest races of my life and one of the most rewarding. When I crossed the finish line, I finally learned what the pull of Ironman was all about: the lifelong challenge of endurance sports. Triathlon is more than just a three-sport event. It is a sport that challenges the human mind and body, a sport to be shared with others, a sport that gives back more than it takes from each competitor. I started triathlon because it was part of the Olympic movement. I fell in love with triathlon because of what Kona represents.▲

The two-loop, 13.1-mile course on The Boise Greenbelt runs along the Boise River. The finish line is on 8th Street in the heart of Boise’s BoDo district.

WEATHER

You’re unlikely to experience anything too extreme this time of year. Expect cool morning temperatures in the mid-60s with the mercury rising to the low80s in the afternoon. Boise has relatively dry air and only receives about an inch of rain each month, so the chance of a downpour on race day is unlikely.
