The Resilience Sharing the Landscape
Location: Waiau, New Zealand Lincoln University Major Design Project

Design Concept | Analysis This project was based on a design study question “Is it possible to create a resilient community that will directly depend on the local landscape for their well-being?” The project started off as a design study, analysing the design question, researching on case-studies as well as analysing the area of a study. The design flows through 3 different scales and communicates the ways of how a small town can be self-sustainable and happy.
Design Objective: To utilize Waiau’s landscape to its full potential that will allow Waiau to become a self-sustainable and resilient town

Opportunities
Gateways to Waiau
• Attraction at entrance to town to make people to want to stop over in Waiau • Develop central Waiau as it is an important knot The diagram shows entrance points to Waiau, which are crucial for development. Central area is where the cars slow down to turn, thus there is a pottential to develop central area to attract tourists to stop over at Waiau
River
• Bring the river closer to the town Waiau is located at the junction of Mason river and Waiau river, however the rivers are almost unnoticeble from within the town. There is an opportunity to open up the access to the river, or even bring the river into the town to create an attraction as well as awaken the sence of importance of water
Nature
• Bring the birds back to revive biodiversity and attract tourists • Stabilize natural environment • Enhance importance of the river Waiau is surrounded by PNA areasalong the river banks. However, they are seperated, which creates a much wider egde effect of nature disturbance for each of them. Connecting them among all four AND the Waiau itself could enhance native biodiversity as well as provide a bigger ground for recreational activities.
Integrate Waiau is very fortunately located at the junction of Mason and Waiau Rivers. It is also conviniently located on the tourist route. The town has so many potentials to florish with life and opportunity, yet these opportunities are unfortunetely neglected. The diagram on the left shows that there is an opportunity to overlay possibilities that fortunate location of Waiau Township brings to create a coherent and resilient community through accurate landscape design and planning.

Land Use
Theere are 3 major points of interest along the tourist route:
River water can now flow through Waiau town via controlled stop bank into the streams in Waiau. Water stream is created to divert water into hydroponic farm. Water is then directed into southern wetland, and excess water get discharge from the wetland into Wiau river.
Orange - Residential Yellow- tourist accomodation Pink - food gardens Purple - vineyards Green - Green area, recreational area
South entrance - lookout on Hydropoic farm from the bridge across Waiau river. This is where visitors may get curious about the farm and stop over to learn more about it. Town centre- a rich with activity area with organic and self-sustainable restaurant on site North entrance - a large vineyard and a changed profile of the road to slow the traffic dow to attract visitor’s atention
Circulation
Most of Waiau roads are turned into shared roads to slow down the trafic to increase level of interest as well as make the town more walkable. The green area now has paths to cater to both cyclists and pedestrians to walk or cycle natural areas of Waiau

Most of the activity is concentrated along tourist routes
Nature + Experience With establishment of a new wetland and cycling and walking systems to it, the wetland is only a couple of minutes walk from town centre. Visitor and residents can now take part in a unique experience, where they can have a glass of Waiau’s organic wine from a winery and walk to the wetland. Sipping wine, watching birds and listening to the nature.

1. Native vegetation Both Mason river and Waiau river are abundant with existing vegetation native cover along the river corridors. Enhancing the existing cover with more native fruiting plants will pottentially attract birds from the conservation areas north to Waiau, thus returning the native fauna 7

4. Forestry To ensure there is availability of local timber supply when Waiau starts to develop further and further, production forestry is to be established nearby. The forest will provide timber for later stages of development as well as help to support the habitat of birds in the area. While the trees are maturing, the forest is to be used as a mountain bike park that connects to the wetland cycling trail.
2. Wetland Establishment of two new wetlands in the landscape of Waiau is a key to natural sustainability in design. Proposed plants will not only purify the water before releasing it back to the river, but will also provide food and habitat for native birds to thrive in Waiau.

North of Waiau lies a number of valuable conservation areas and reserves. With introduction of native plants and shelter wetland plants, there is a potential to attract native birds and provide breeding ground for them in Waiau

Common Kitchen With introduction of new food gardens, vineyards and other activities, there will be more tourists in the area, thus economy will rise. With more job opportunities the economy will be on the rise in Waiau, thus there will be a need in medium density housing. The housing block has a common kitchen which runs on naturally produced gas from biodigester, which in turn uses food waste to produce gas. Common area will create a more environmentally and socially sustainable town.
Road crossings Road crossings are slightly elevate from the road level to slow down any oncoming traffic .
Green House The green house in the town square is an integration between green house and hydroponic plant where water from river stream is used to make vertical hydroponic planters. With this set up, Waiau Organic Restaurant will be able to provide fresh food supplies even in winter.
Flood feature Flood feature is a landscape element which uses water from the town river stream to immitate flood by allowing water to spread into gental slope pool. The water can be walked over by the stepping stones , mimicing natural stones that can be stepped on to cross the river.

WATER PLAY
Children can play with water mazes, opening the channels to allow water to pass through as well as use the water to pump into the adjascent rain garden to water the plants in it.
FLOOD FEATURE
Flood feature is a design mimicing the flooding river. The gentle bottom of the feature gets flooded with water, depending on the recent rainfall and river conditions. This is to admire the importance of river in our environmetn and interact with it
ACTIVE PLAZA
Social sustainability is a key to community resilience. Activating a space by providing movable furniture that can be customised for a certain need can encourage social interaction between plaza visitors. Timber furniture can be formed into seats, tables, table tennis tables, louge or any other form that user may come up with. For example, during sunday markets, furniture can be formed into tables to sell products from or into table and chair to have lunch with freshly purchased food from the market.

Site Analysis | Master Plan The aim of the project is to bring community of the area, which consists of people of diverse age groups and working classes together. The different social classes are then taken as an opportunity to create spaces full of vast amount of activities that can be enjoyable to all the people within and beyond the study area.

Site Analysis | Intermediate Plan The concept of ‘Serpentine’ became an inspiration for the project. The Serpentine is an unpredictable line that runs from one end to the other. The ‘unpredictable’ is translated to represent diverse community and the way it runs connects the different ends of the area together, bringing all the communities to common grounds. The project aims to allow for different types of the activities throughout the whole area.

HUMAN DENSITY OBSERVATION During the lunch time there will be a lot of people having lunch at the restaurants or cafes. EVALUATION 1. Our site is surrounded by the restaurants and cafes, so there will be big crowd around the area. Thus there will be noise pollution. 2. The people might want to come to our site after lunch to relax. An opportunity for the commercial business at site to sustain. SUGGESTION 1. sound barrier. Eg. Plants can play a part to reduce noise pollution.

OBSERVATION There is a lack of greenery around Kampong Glam( refer to GREEN NETWORK), so the page can be an opportunity for visitors to relax being surrounded by greenery. EVALUATION How are we going to attract these people. SUGGESTION 1. Install a prominent element (eg. Feature tree/ sculpture) that can be seen from far to awake curiosity in visitors to visit the site. 2. Provide more greenery to attract people to relax there 3. Provide more shade either by hardscape or softscape as it is very sunny during noon.( refer to shadow analysis) OBSERVATION The restaurants and cafes nearby can be too crowded. EVALUATION People may want to have lunch at our site. They might pollute the place with food leftovers. SUGGESTION Provide more dustbins, as it is a human nature to throw in the dustbin when there is one around.

PROBLEM At night there may be youngsters who would want to come to the site to drink. EVALUATION 1. They may damage the facilities and surroundings 2. Littering; may leave bottles around; can break and pose as a danger. 3. Noise pollution 4. Inappropriate behaviour 5. Smoking – Unpleasant to the residents 6. Bad influence to Resident’s children SUGGESTION Avoid creating enclosed spaces so that people will not hide there to drink. Provide well lighted area to avoid inappropriate behaviour.
ISSUE • The traffic is always congested since the entrance to Malay Heritage is over there. • For those drivers, they might find it difficult to reach Kampung Glam as most of the roads are one way roads. In addition, it’s difficult to drive around Kampung Glam due to roadside parking. • This bus stop situated nearby the site but it’s not sheltered. Potential of future residents using this bus stop.

Main vehicular routes to the site are Sultan Gate (two way) and Aliwal Street (one way). Nearest main road: Jalan Sultan & Beach Road. Bugis Mrt Station, within walking distance of 8 mins(650M) from the site. Walking distance from nearest bus stop: 2 mins to reach site. (About 140-190m)
Kampong Glam is a historical suburb in Singapore located to the south-east side of Singapore. In Malay, ‘kampung’ means ‘village’ and ‘glam’ is a tree that grew in the area. In 1822, Sir Stamford Raffles dedicated Kampung Glam to bugis, malays and arabs. In early 20st century, commercial shophouses spread throughout Kampong Glam, therefore attracting other ethnicities to the area. Nowadays, Kampong Glam is a place for food, drinks and entertainment. Even though the village lifestyle is not practiced there anymore, the ‘kampung’ spirit still lives there. This project was developed through going down the scale from macro site analysis to micro site analysis to ensure maximum use of opportunities available in the area.

This only applies to the internal area of Kampong glam. The edge of kampong glam (by the road side) is generally well shaded with tall irregular and umbrella formed trees.

New homes to be created to provide more affordable and higher density housing that Christchurch needs. Travis Wetland is a succsessful restoration project that provides both habitat for rare native apecies and is constructed to allow for storage in case of sea level rise. Using it as an examplar and sort of connection the wetland to Avon river will provide benefits, such as ◘ more habitat for rare bird species (such as Australasian bittern and White herron) ◘ controlled storm water / sea level rise water detention/storage (with roads used as dams) ◘ extention of Travis wetland ecosystem, addition to Christchurch’s green network

The owner of a semi-detached house asked a class of Year 1 Diploma in Landscape Architecture to create a landscape design for the confined landscape on their property. This design was among top 5 chosen by the owner of the house. The most amazing thing about autumn is the way leaves of different trees change their green colour to more vibrant colours, such as yellow, orange, red, brown and purple before they shed. The plant design concept adopts the idea of leaf colour change to symbolize autumn. Each zone is divided by different ‘leaf colour’ which is represented by plants with corresponding colour elements . The user will be able to experience the colour change as he or she walks through the plot.

“The possibilities of summer are gone and the child of winter is on the horizon” – this how the autumn is described. Autumn is the weather smoothly changes from warm to cool at the same time gladdening us with the play and contrast of colours. Greenery starts to shed leaves which are now in vibrant colours such as orange, red and yellow. They twist in the air carried by cool wind. It is a perfect time to relax on the carpet of fallen leaves and to think about something important looking at the rain drops running down the window glass. Unfortunately, this beautiful season does not come to Singapore (as it can only be experienced in temperate regions), yet everyone has a right to experience the magic of autumn. Designer wants to create a design where the autumn can be expressed in colours, textures and the feeling that will bring the joyful and relaxed mood. Autumn is the harmony of colours, surroundings and the human feelings and this is how it is going to be expressed in the design.
Patterns are expressed in tree braches, fallen leaves and tree trunks.

The purpose of this project was to re-design an existing community garden located off the Dover Road, Dover, Singapore. A group survey was undertaken in different existing community gardens in Singapore to identify the needs and preferences of community gardens users. Pebbles are clust of rock sized about 4 to 64 mm. They are created by water flowing over porous surface, washing over and creating pebbles by friction. Pebbles come in various colors and textures, and can have streaks of quartz and different colored sedimentary rock. They are of different shapes and forms as well. Time that took it for a pebble to be formed varies from a few years to several decades. They are so different, yet all of them are called pebbles. As the objective of this project is to bring different groups of people together to do gardening , people can be represented as pebbles. No matter of what shape , colour, size, age and physical abilities people are, we are all categorized as humans. Therefore, everyone should be welcomed to use community garden to enjoy the wonders of nature, such as watching plants to grow their way up together.
