GOALS: - to “uncrowd the Civil Canteen and provide an enjoyable atmosphere for those eating inside - provide faster and easier access to drinks and snacks on campus - extend the variety of food and drinks available on campus - provide an alternative catering option for smaller events taking place on campus and in the open air theatre

LOCATION Located inside the CET campus itself, the site is part of the proposed expansion of the college campus and its facilities. The site is flanked by the Architecture, Civil and Computer science department buildings. Open air theatre, a small canteen (called Civil Canteen) and a planetarium also exist in the close vicinity of the site. The existing canteen has inadequate facilities and space to serve the mass exodus of students of the nearby departments. Site area: 1700 sqm Vegetation: primarily wild shrubs and bushes Climate: Trivandrum primarily experiences tropical monsoon climate. Microclimate of the site is controlled by the presence of lush greenery surrounding the site. Terrain: slope to the north-western side of the site. [Due to this, the concrete Wbase of the kiosk The Civil Canteen is located on the opposite side of the Sports Lane, facing the site.

is supposed to level the site depending on the requirements.]

SURVEY RESULTS

ANALYSIS

Farsana and Anupa

Having a chance to meet the main group of people who will use the designed kiosk I concentrated on their informal, individual needs. The major problem was the fact that the existing canteen is too small for over 200 students and staff who visit it during lunch breaks.

SERVING Taking into consideration that so far beverages in the Civil Canteen have been served in glass (hot drinks) and metal (cold drinks) cups and used cups washed by hand, I thought of making the serving easier and faster. I’ve also added an option of having a drink in a take-away cup. Drinks will be available to get from self-service drinks dispensers after paying for the chosen drink and getting a suitable cup [glass or take-away paper cup]. After use, glass cups are to be returned to the collection window (elevation A) and will be washed in the dishwasher installed inside the kiosk.

Apart from drinks served from the dispensers, available to get in the kiosk will be:

SANDWICHES PREPARED BY STAFF

POPULAR SWEETS, CHOCOLATE, CRISPS (so far only available outside the campus)

SODA DRINKS IN BOTTLES AVAILABLE FROM THE DRINKS MACHINE
