Loras College Republicans v. Democrats Top 10 reasons to vote for Obama 10. “No way, no how, no McCain!”— Sen. Hillary Clinton 9. “This election is the most important election of our lifetime.” — Sen. Barack Obama. Please, don’t mess it up. 8. Democrats are the best “donkey” on campus! 7. Republicans believe the best way to feed the sparrows is to give the horse more oats. We just feed sparrows. 6. If you vote for Obama, then you wouldn’t be voting for a Republican! 5. Vote Democrat so NO ONE, even a poor college grad, has to say “I can’t afford health care.” 4. You can vote for people who know what a Duhawk is, such as Chuck Isenhart and Pam Jochum (both Loras grads running for state House and Senate, respectively). 3. “Everything you need to know about this election comes from ‘driver’s ed.’ If you want to go backward, put it in ‘R;’ if you want to go forward, put in it ‘D.’” — Iowa Sen. When the people of Nepal were celebrating their greatest festival on Thursday, Nepali students on the Loras campus celebrated in like with other students here at the college. Loras College now has 29 Nepali students and the celebration of Dashain saw a turnout of more than 60 guests. It was held at the Rohlman Interfaith Chapel. Organized by Loras Intercultural Student Association (LISA), the event also invited a Nepali family from Dubuque — Dr. Manoranjan Dhaubhadel and his wife, Sarita — to share the tradition. Junior Sanjit Pradhananga started off the event with

a brief presentation on Dashain and its significance. Most of the Nepalis and some non-Nepalis were clad in Nepali traditional dresses, which always add much color to the festivities. The Nepali couple and members of Loras intercultural office Alejandro Pino and Cindy Behnke put traditional “tika” on the foreheads of dozens of guests who were present. All the attendants lined up to receive “tika.” Traditionally, all the younger ones in a family receive “tika” from their elders — one by one, along with blessings. “The celebration was a wonderful opportunity to glimpse and share a festival that holds great meaning for our Hindu students on campus and connect in a small way with Hindus across the world,” said Mary Ellen Carroll, associate vice president for continues on pg. 2

Think pink Beckman Hall is doing its part to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Kelsey Hlavin kelsey.hlavin@loras.edu

reporter The campus is not only turning green this month with going trayless, it also is turning pink. The fact that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has not been lost by students and staff. For instance, you might notice a new trend around campus: pink hair extensions. At Amirage, a salon at the corner of Main and Ninth streets, many women are going to get their “Touch of Care Hair,” which donates a portion of the proceeds to

the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. This foundation was created in 1982 and now is the largest source of non-profit funds for a single organization. Beckman Hall is going “Passionately Pink for the Cure” on Oct. 30, when students can wear pink and donate $5 or more to the foundation. On the third floor of Beckman, you can sign up for the Komen Des Moines Race for the Cure on Oct. 25. Also in Beckman, awareness pedicures and manicures are being given in order to raise more money for the cause. Hannah Weiss, a third-floor resident assistant in Beckman Hall, has headed up a couple fundraisers for the month of October. “I think it is important to do what we can to help out, because breast cancer doesn’t just hurt those who have it — it hurts their friends, their families and their communities,” Weiss said. “And every little bit that we can raise in order to make life easier and to fund research is a big step toward a cure.” The soccer teams as well are doing their

We are proud to say that we have been selected by the Iowa Federation of College Republicans as “chapter of the year” for three of the past four years, and we strive to be an active college “club” on the campus. Over this next year, we will be working closely with our surrounding Dubuque colleges to helping to keep Iowa “RED” for Sen. John McCain.

president of Loras College Democrats Since the organization was restarted a couple of years ago, we have brought in candidates for president, U.S. Congress, Iowa Congress and many other local offices to come talk to students. These appearances have been highlighted by the biggest political event in Dubuque this past year, when Sen. Barack Obama came to the Fieldhouse. The organization also welcomed former Sen. John Edwards (with his wife, Elizabeth, with actor Kevin Bacon in tow) and other presidential candidates, such as Rep. Dennis Kucinich, to campus. As a group, it is our goal to promote activeness in the political arena and to encourage college students to participate in this great democracy. We do this by volunteering for the Dubuque County Democrats and the Obama Campaign for Change, holding both partisan and nonpartisan events on campus, and fostering an ongoing discussion on political issues. Our group meets every other Wednesday at 7 p.m. We meet at the Info Desk in the ACC and carpool to the Dubuque County Democrats office to find out what is going on and volunteer to help.

On Oct. 18, the men’s and women’s teams will be playing “Pink Games” in which they will wear pink jerseys. They will also organize other

activities in order to create awareness. With each contribution made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, millions of those diagnosed are so much closer to finding a cure.

These problems were created by Republicans. We need a change. If you want to get involved, email me at steven.anderson@loras.edu.

The color purple sits on the color wheel between red and blue, and it comes in warm, reddish, more ‘passionate’ hues and in cooler, complex plum and indigo ones. Some of the psychological effects of the color purple may have to do with its history. In the West, purple color has a long-standing reputation as the color of royalty and power. For centuries, the intended psychological effect of the color purple was to show that the wearer was a VIP. The Roman emperor Julius Caesar (100BC-44BC) was so taken with the color that he decided he alone was allowed to wear it. The tradition of reserving the color purple for members of the ruling class started in Biblical times, in countries around the Mediterranean Sea. It is partly due to the fact that purple color was so expensive that only very rich people could

13

afford it. Purple color was originally ‘harvested’ at the coast, from the glands of the murex shellfish (and yes, the animals did die in the process). Much later, in 1856, a young Brit invented the first synthetic (aniline) dye, and started producing the color purple on a grand scale. His discovery sparkled international craze in dress and interior design. Everyone and their dog - and their curtains! - wanted to be seen in ‘mauve’. The color purple had suddenly become democratic. Apart from being fashionable, purple color was also worn in England as a color of mourning until

and martyrdom, and during the Passion of Christ, all crucifixes are covered in purple cloth. Painters have often used purple color for the dress of the Virgin Mary (the ‘Queen of Heaven’), and Cardinals wear a reddish hue of purple as a sign of their office. There’s more to tell but I’ll stop here before I get completely carried away. You don’t need loads of information to enjoy the psychological effects of the color purple. Purple is a rich, deeply satisfying, complex color that can add real luxury to a room. You don’t have to be a VIP these days to surround yourself with purple color - but maybe you’ll feel like one if you do.
